Eric Raeber1,164,452I got a post from @112417919317910781482 who is in the Bay Area this coming Friday evening and was wondering what we other photographers were up to. Sounds to me like a good excuse for a photowalk, no? On that, @108104041823912324329  proposed Alviso, which is a small city at the bottom tip of the bay with a bit of a history, as well as some old buildings to prove it. Here is the map: http://goo.gl/maps/xduKL We will start from the entrance of the Marina Park at 6.30pm. Park on the street, outside the parking lot, as the gate closes at sunset. @108104041823912324329 will tell us how she found out... Alviso also has a train crossing. If the passenger train is on time, we should get trains passing by around: - 6.08pm (northbound) - 6.23pm (southbound) - 7.33pm (northbound) - 8.30pm (southbound) This is a very small town. So even if you come late, you cannot miss us! If you come early, shoot the train! Bring on your flashlight and tripod. We’ll be in for some long exposures and light painting. We’ll have dinner at a restaurant of our choice after the photowalk. It is all within walking distance. Hope to see you there for some fun walk, fun talk, and fun shootsNight photowalk in Alviso, San Jose2013-01-18 18:30:0013

The Shore of Night

As we live in a large metropolitan area, with lots of light pollution, I never really thought I could get a photo like this of the Milky Way from anywhere nearby.  But with some planning, and excellent conditions, Linda and I were able to photograph the night sky over the Pigeon Point lighthouse last Friday night!  Special thanks to +Darryl Van Gaal, +Sairam Sundaresan and +Robin Griggs Wood, whose mentoring and support set us on this path.  +Swee Oh and +Gazzaroonii T., maybe next time we can talk you into staying :-).

Landing Lights

After decades of work and trillions of zlants, the Nyryx had accomplished the near-impossible: They had finally developed the perfect defensive cloaking system for all their spacegoing craft.  Requiring the development of several new branches of physics, this advance would let Them pop in and out of our own little corner of the galaxy with impunity.  Commander Glorx sat tall and proud as he gave the order for the first actual test landing on our defenseless planet.  And then the landing lights came on.  Whatever passed for His palm hit whatever passed for His face with a meaty smack.

It was such a delight to have +Samantha OBrien in my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography!  In addition to her wonderful storytelling in these images, Samantha was extremely supportive of her fellow participants -- I suspect she never missed a post.  Please enjoy her work play from the mentorship!

It Was All a Blur

And I loved every moment of it!

My first +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers with +Alex Lapidus and I know it will not be my last!  My creative side is loving all the techniques I have learned and, in some cases, brought back out of my toy box for some play!

Combine that with a fantastic group of photographers and we were able to feed off each other, creating some amazing pieces of art!

The two take-aways from this mentorship were that rules were made to be broken and keep feeding your muse (thank you +Robin Griggs Wood ).

Attached is my graduation album and I can't thank Alex and all the moderators enough for all their encouragement.  You are all awesome and I look forward to working with you again real soon!___It was such a delight to have +Samantha OBrien in my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography!  In addition to her wonderful storytelling in these images, Samantha was extremely supportive of her fellow participants -- I suspect she never missed a post.  Please enjoy her work play from the mentorship!

As I look at +Valerie Liney's album from my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography, I can almost hear her flowers whispering in my ear :-).  While we coaxed some wilder adventures out of her now and then, Valerie has a subtle and delicate sensibility.  Please enjoy her work play from the program!

G+Mentorship Program for Photographers Public Plus Post +Alex Lapidus +Robin Griggs Wood
Blurs and Unsharp Photography Guided Play 2015

Several weeks ago I was accepted into the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers  mentorship with +Alex Lapidus
I have to say that, I had been aware of this particular mentorship from the creative public graduation posts done in 2014.  I told myself, that if there was an opportunity to participate, if it was offered again I would go for it.  How enticing it would be to tell stories with our photographs but use every tool in the creative toolbox to do it.  Being able to use blurs and take somewhat unsharp photos would be liberating.
I am sure you have experienced this kind of photograph on the Google + stream and I bet you have asked “how has that photographer created it”.

The mentorship was divided into sections as Unfocus, Panning, Rotation and Zooming, Longer Exposures and Multiple Exposures, Car trails, Star trails and motion in water or clouds.  The haunted house was fun. Composing with your feet took us into the realm of time lapse and then there was reflection blur. We learned techniques that were learned from former mentees and shared with us.  There was so many different and surprisingly creative ways to use apps on our mobile devices.  They could be quite addictive. Software and unique lenses further pulled out the creativeness.  I had no idea this would be so much fun.
I hope that I have made you curious as to whether this is for you or not.  If you have to opportunity to try this mentorship or any of the others offered in the G+Mentorship Program for Photographers sign up.

For now, have a look at some of the photos that I learned to create in this program. Thank you to all who gave their time and expertise to this program and to all the photographers that I have met in this experience.  I had a blast. ___As I look at +Valerie Liney's album from my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography, I can almost hear her flowers whispering in my ear :-).  While we coaxed some wilder adventures out of her now and then, Valerie has a subtle and delicate sensibility.  Please enjoy her work play from the program!

Tripods: Gitzo (1542/T?) vs. Feisol (3441?)

I know there are a million posts out there about tripods, and I promise I've read many of them; wondering if someone has specifically compared these -- I touched the Gitzo today (I think the regular 1542, not the 1542T), but I think the Feisol isn't available at retail.  I could use something small and light to travel with, but also something substantial and sturdy for rougher conditions.  I could buy two sets of legs with one good ball head, but it would sure be nice if one of these could work for both cases.  Any opinions?  I was also recommended the Acratech GP ball head with the Gitzo, or Feisol has a range, I'd probably look at the CB-40D.

And so the Blur claims another victim :-).  It's always a challenge to shake loose from the things you normally do; +Ellie Kennard accepted that challenge so completely and joyfully during my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography that her stream of photos will never be the same again.  Ellie has given so much of her time and energy to the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers that I'm especially thrilled she had such a great experience.  Please enjoy her wonderful album, and visit her profile for much more!

I Can See Clearly Now the Blur Has Gone
Sharp Focus on Blur : Graduation Plus Post and Album Share

And so it comes to an end   NO  to a START of a whole new way of thinking and taking photographs. And I can see clearly how blur and unsharp techniques can do so much to focus attention on what I want my viewer to see and experience. I have learned that sometimes the blur itself is enough to express the emotion I feel (see the dancing tractor image, or the abstract wet lights in the night images in the album). Sometimes the blur leads our eye to the subject as in the delicate details in the petals of the frozen flowers or softly lit paeony. Sometimes it helps to set mood as the dark and mysterious one in the photograph of the rusting car wreck in the middle of a dense forest or the light and frivolous one in the candy coloured flowers.

So the power lies in knowing not so much how but when and why to use this wonderful new skill. I have written many things over the past few weeks to express my feelings about what we have been learning in this mentorship. We have gone through a period of such intense creativity and inspiration, more than I have ever experienced before, that, frankly, I have been loathe to write this post. I didn't want the experience to end.

And of course it won't. It is a beginning of a new creative period in my life. I have personally discovered my ability to use my eyes, my tools and my skills to share my vision in a new way, unique, I hope, to me. Thanks to what I have learned from the main mentor +Alex Lapidus and his helpers as well as my fellow mentees, I have grown as a photographer in a way I never dreamed possible. I can't properly express my gratitude to everyone, I just hope they feel it through what they (and you) see in the joy expressed in these images in my album.
(Click on the first image to browse through the album seeing each of the 12 images full size)

And Alex? I called him a bully (and other names ;-) ) but every name was really a term of affection. He has a wonderful ability to sense the potential in each of his students and make sure that no one stops short of achieving that to the full. I hope that eventually he makes up his sleep debt. I know he got no more than an hour or two most nights over the past 9 weeks.

Thank you to the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers and +Robin Griggs Wood who was the originator of this wonderful program for photographers on G+. Robin has been behind the scenes (or front and centre) in many of the mentorships I have taken or helped to give on here and without her I would not be writing this post, nor taking these photographs at this point.

Are you not able to comment on Google+ because you don't belong? Would you prefer to comment on my blog? It's right here with all my G+ posts on it: http://www.elliekennard.ca .___And so the Blur claims another victim :-).

Today it's my great pleasure to offer you the work play of +Ken Fowkes -- who I finally met in person yesterday!  As a participant in my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography, he was articulate in both words and images about some of the overarching questions that he expresses in this terrific post.  Please enjoy (my titles) the Sorcerer's Tree, Cat Planet, the Bent Bee, the Claw, part of the Sunflower Family, and much more!

Sometimes the story is in the details. And sometimes it’s all about impression.

Sometimes a lack of focus obscures the message, and sometimes the details just get in the way.

What am I talking about? These are just some of the things I pondering during the eight weeks I spent in +Alex Lapidus' Blurs and Unsharp Photography: Guided Play mentorship, which introduced us participants to a smorgasbord of techniques for manipulating the amount and quality of … what to call it? … detail … focus … literalism? ... in our photographs.

We blurred and blended space and time, and pixels. We bent light through and around anything we could think of. We shared knowledge, traded encouragement, and inspired each other to go out and play each week with the techniques we were learning. We became a community of enthusiasts adventuring together through new photographic domains. I had a blast!

I experienced amusing failures, happy accidents, and enough successes to come out feeling absolutely thrilled that I applied and was accepted into the mentorship. This was my third mentorship through the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers and I have been amazed at the level of commitment each and every mentor has shown to the success of the participants. Their passion for sharing their knowledge is a precious gift for which I am truly grateful.

If you are passionate about photography, and want to learn from mentors whose passion drives them to share what they know generously, I invite you to follow the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers page and pay attention to the mentorships being offered there. If you are curious what it is like for the participants, you can read some of their graduation posts and check out their graduation albums.

A big thank you to the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers and it's talented directors +Alex Lapidus, +Robin Griggs Wood, and +Ron Clifford.___Today it's my great pleasure to offer you the work play of +Ken Fowkes -- who I finally met in person yesterday!

+Heather Szarka caught my attention in a previous mentorship, and was a delight to have in my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography.  From the ghostly to the warmly real, her album reflects a terrific range of techniques and ideas -- please check out her work play from the program!

Final PLUS Post: Blur and Unsharp Photography
I entered this mentorship with no knowledge of the world of blur but arrived with an open and eager mind.  In just 8 whirlwind weeks we dove headlong into this amazing world and quickly built our arsenal of techniques, tools and toys to accomplish things many of us didn't know were possible!  I have had the pleasure of watching the work of my fellow mentees grow to new heights on this journey and anticipate watching us all continue to explore and grow!  We now posses the skills to walk amongst the worlds of sharp and blur while exploring the overlap where the two worlds become one.
A big thank you to the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers and +Robin Griggs Wood for fostering this amazing learning platform of sharing knowledge and making it available to any level of photographer who is eager to learn.  An extra special thank you to +Alex Lapidus for taking on the challenge of herding us cats for 8 weeks, sharing your knowledge and insights into this incredible blurry realm, and giving us freedom as well as guidance :-)  Thanks too to all the moderators and helpers for sharing their knowledge and encouraging us along the way!
Our time spent here has been invaluable and I now walk with a confident beaming smile knowing I now have  the whole playground at my disposal and grateful that my life and work has become interwoven with those of my fellow mentees and our leaders!
THANK YOU :-)___+Heather Szarka caught my attention in a previous mentorship, and was a delight to have in my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography.  From the ghostly to the warmly real, her album reflects a terrific range of techniques and ideas -- please check out her work play from the program!

+Jennifer Walton makes flowers dance, as you can see in her recent post at https://plus.google.com/109950797191989560535/posts/MLgW77jo8zU !  She also does much more in this wonderful album from my recent mentorship on Blurs and Unsharp Photography, expressing some intriguing ideas in beautiful and striking ways.  Please enjoy her work play from the program!

I have just finished an 8 week mentorship with the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers run by +Robin Griggs Wood into the world of blurs in the Blurs & Unsharp Photography: Guided Play 2015 lead by the amazing +Alex Lapidus.

Before this mentorship I admired from afar blurry photography, having no knowledge of how to achieve it.  That has changed, in the mentorship I learned how to deliberately move the camera around, up, down and sideways.  Then there was the ghosts, light trails, post processing to get blur and my favourite, shooting in the Pep Ventosa style.  I reached into the 'toy box' shooting through plastic, vasoline on glass, wineglasses, fisheyes, lens babies and free lensing allowing me artistic freedom I never imaged possible.  Blurry photography enables me to put what I am feeling and seeing into my photographs.

So, if any of the mentorships offered here on G+ catch your fancy sign up. This community atmosphere with other mentees and lead by a fearless mentor is a safe, encouraging and supportive platform to play and learn in.

Thank you +Alex Lapidus and your wonderful crew of helpers for making my 8 weeks a monumental turning point for my photography.___+Jennifer Walton makes flowers dance, as you can see in her recent post at https://plus.google.com/109950797191989560535/posts/MLgW77jo8zU !  She also does much more in this wonderful album from my recent mentorship on Blurs and Unsharp Photography, expressing some intriguing ideas in beautiful and striking ways.  Please enjoy her work play from the program!

It seems like just yesterday (wait, was it?) that +Morgana Creely led the first round of this program, but she and her participants had so much fun that it's happening again!  Please take a look, and be sure to sign up on her original post.

Round Two of the “Single Frame: Introduction to Cinematic Storytelling” mentorship is ready for sign-ups!

#SINGLEFRAME2

This is a special program introducing some of the compositional elements of visual storytelling through the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers.

I will be taking on a handful of people for a six week on-line mentorship program which will include lessons, assignments, and informal discussions. Everyone who participates can have fun and learn at the same time!

Hi I’m Morgana, a Photographer and author, and I’ve always been passionate about creating images that tell stories, and helping other photographers find their own storytelling voice. You can find out more about what I do over on my website at www.imagecinematic.com

*PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a technical workshop and this is NOT a course for beginners.
*

You will be expected to own and know how to use a DSLR, basic lighting principles and have access to artificial lighting (Studio, speedlight, even practical lighting such as desk lamps would be fine. You will also need access to and a basic working knowledge of post processing software such as Photoshop or Lightroom.

Images used for example during this course will not necessarily be family friendly or safe for work. Whilst I ask that images of nudity or violence are not posted to this course, examples and course content may include dark or adult themes.

Selections will made: August 1st - 3rd, 2015 AEST for the mentorship beginning August 10th, 2015

These are the selection criteria:

• You must own and know how to use a DSLR, basic lighting principles and have access to and a basic working knowledge of PS or LR.

• You must be taking and posting your own photographs regularly here on G+ –– an absolute minimum of three days between Public posts; more increases your chances of being selected. (The class itself will be private to the group selected except for the option of a public display album of your best work at the end.)

• You must be interactive here at G+, as you will be expected to participate in this program giving feedback and comments to others.

• You have no previous studies in this subject, since this program is designed for those who have not had the opportunity or advantage to add this skill set to their knowledge base.

• You have the time available to participate in this workshop.

• You must have a sense of humour, a willingness to give and take constructive criticism, and not be offended by dark or adult themes.

To be considered for selection, please comment to the main post only, here:  [https://plus.google.com/+MorganaCreely/posts/fpTf8kvnd8n]
(your application will not be seen at any reshares) and answer the following questions in your comment:

1) Photography skill level

2) Photo editing software used most

3) Favourite film and stills photography genres

4) What you want to get out of this mentoring course

5) Previous non-technical art, photography or cinematography studies

6) Amount of time you have available for participation

EXAMPLE ANSWERS

2) Photoshop with a bit of Lightroom
3) Big Budget Action movies, Westerns
4) To learn how to work out my ideas in front of the camera
5) Two one say workshops and YouTube :)

We managed to peel +Stephen Thackeray away from his crisp birds and flowers for a bit during my recent mentorship on Blurs and Unsharp Photography, and were amply rewarded!  His adventures in both shooting and processing took him into some fun new territory.  Check out his great selection of images from the program!

I have just spent an incredibly interesting and rewarding eight weeks completing the "Blurs And Un-Sharp Photography: Guided Play" mentorship run by +Alex Lapidus . The mentorship forms part of the pay it forward initiative run by +Robin Griggs Wood in the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers .

I applied for a place in the mentorship primarily because my photography efforts so far have not strayed much beyond the search for razor sharp images. When I was accepted I was overjoyed, and a little nervous, as this would be something completely new to me.

The last eight weeks have changed my outlook on photography in a big way. Now when I view potential subjects, sharpness is not always my first consideration. Blurred images can have a mind blowing impact! I learned new techniques to manipulate my camera to produce blur. We learned how to produce "High Energy" and "Calming" images straight from camera or via photo manipulation software. Alex Lapidus was tireless in his support and encouragement, as were the rest of the crew. Fellow mentees were awesome in their skill and support - friendships made that will last!

Anyone considering applying for a place in the various mentorships should not hesitate - the is no more rewarding experience here on G+

From the very beginning of my recent Blurs and Unsharp Photography mentorship, +Mari Luukkonen was immediately able to direct a new set of tools towards a clear artistic vision.  From her subtle and romantic landscapes to her Sketchbook and other urban visions to her intriguing abstracts, this excellent album (and other recent posts) show how effectively she has put the Blur to work.  Please enjoy this sampling from the program!

Graduation Post - The End of the Beginning

Like after any good joyride, I feel a little empty and my mind is blank - or should I say blurred!

I was one of the lucky and happy ones who got to take part in mentorship called Blurs and Unsharp Photography: Guided Play 2015 lead by awesome +Alex Lapidus . And I really mean awesome, since the time and dedication he showed to all of us in the group, be it the lesson posts or feedback for our work, was truly amazing.

Alex had chosen this quote from Israelmore Ayivor to inspire us: “To dream" means to focus and zoom the photos of destiny called visions for clearer view, manipulation and exploitation.” And that is exactly what these past 8 weeks turned out to be for me. Alex said himself he hoped he offered us, not just some photographic techniques, but a bit of artistic freedom. I can assure you that he did! I have now so many new tools in my toolbox to use, that from now on it really is only my imagination that is the limit :) Again quoting Alex: ”There are so many ways to create, once we understand what we’re trying to accomplish”.

Now I know how to get that blurred background, or just a blurred subject. Or how to make an abstract with so many type of intentional camera movement, or create some surreal scenes with multiple exposures. Or what toys I can use to get some amazing effects and how to make them all combine to create the mood I’m after. What I am especially happy about this mentorship is, that these techniques gave me back my inspiration to shoot landscapes, as I felt I was able to create the ’mindscapes’ I see in my mind when looking a scene.

So once again, thank you so much +Alex Lapidus   for being so great, and thank you crew members, especially you +Heiko Mahr  for your wonderful and inspiring articles and you +Rosie Nixon  for introducing the Pep Ventosa style :)
And of course this mentorship would not have been possible without the wonderful +Robin Griggs Wood  and +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers. This was my second mentorship and I truly recommend these for everyone who are keen to learn.

And last but definitely not least - thank you all my fellow mentees! It was my pleasure to work with you and admire and be inspired by your work for these 8 weeks. I have you all in my circles now, so I cab continue to be inspired :))

Here is my graduation album with few of my favourite shots shot for the weekly assignments and representing different techniques. I must warn you, that you will definitely see some more of these in future too! :D___From the very beginning of my recent Blurs and Unsharp Photography mentorship, +Mari Luukkonen was immediately able to direct a new set of tools towards a clear artistic vision.  From her subtle and romantic landscapes to her Sketchbook and other urban visions to her intriguing abstracts, this excellent album (and other recent posts) show how effectively she has put the Blur to work.  Please enjoy this sampling from the program!

I'm so glad to have taken part in this great mentorship.  Many thanks  to our leader, +Alex Lapidus, his super crew of moderators, the amazing mentees  ... and, of course, also to +Robin Griggs Wood  and the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers.

The eight weeks went by all too fast.  There was much to learn, and we had great fun experimenting and exploring this whole new world in the photography galaxy ... all the while weightless/free of the 'gravity' of sharpness.  :)

Alex's style of mentoring is super ...  meticulous behind the scenes; relaxed and sitting on the corner of his desk with his sleeves rolled up in the classroom ...  attentive to all his students.

The best part of picking up my camera these days is feeling how tremendously the possibility of creating  an image I'll truly like has increased.  I still revere the tried and true ... but new skills and a new outlook, all made possible by the mentorship,  have made a huge and splendid difference.

If you have a chance to be a part of this mentorship the next time it's offered ... or any of the other mentorships supported by the amazing +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers   ... don't hesitate.  :)___Time flies when you're having fun!  And you can see it fly, perhaps more than once, in this marvelous album by +k phelps, from my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography.  I love how she describes the joy of the Blur as a kind of weightlessness; please enjoy her excellent work play!

Plus Post Week 8
Blurs and Unsharp Photography Guided Play 2015: The End of the Beginning

Wow, so where to even begin.  I went into this, my first mentorship program, expecting to learn a few techniques and maybe get an idea of how I might want to use blurry images in my art.  I should have known better, really.  Years of theater school and I only expected to learn a few techniques?!  As an actor I am intimately familiar with the concept of an artists 'tool box' and I know quite well that the acquisition of said tools includes the artistic growth required to use them.  Well, tools I acquired and grow I most certainly did.  I realized tonight, as I went back through my images from this most amazing mentorship program, that I have a lot more creative potential than I have ever given myself credit for.  I am discovering that I am in no danger of getting locked into one style as a photographer and that I can find a way to make any new tool or trick or technique my very own and that is fantastic.  So thank you.  Thank you +Alex Lapidus for leading us on this wild and awesome ride, thank you +Robin Griggs Wood for, among many other things, helping me understand that my Muse is limitless, thank you to the wonderful team of mentors for all the help and advice and wonderful feedback, and of course a huge thank you to the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers for making all this possible.  This album represents the huge artistic diversity I have already achieved and is the jumping off point for wonderful things to follow.  Enjoy!___+Traci Asaurus surprised us more than once during my recent mentorship on Blurs and Unsharp Photography :-).  Her album shows her great range and creativity; as she describes, she was quickly able to integrate new ideas and tools into her repertoire, and to create striking and intriguing images with the Blur.  Please enjoy her excellent work play from the program!

When we began my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography, +FotoAgnieszka Ambro was one of the participants who immediately made me feel happy and excited to be doing it again!  From the first week, she was going far beyond just the assignments she was posting in our community, also filling her own public profile with her beautiful and fascinating experiments with the Blur.  She has made a plaything of her city, offering it fresh each week in flavors from the gentle and subtle to the dramatic and striking.  Please enjoy her album of favorites!

My graduation album
I recently took part in mentorship Blur and Unsharp Photography - Guided Play 2015,  offered by +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers led by  great +Alex Lapidus and a fantastic group of mentors. I must say it was a fantastic experience, it was the first time for me!
All the lessons were very interesting, they were prepared in every detail, with a lot of additional materials. Exercises to do every week were very funny and addictive, we all did them with great passion! I learned so many things about blurred and unsharp photography, I used many new techniques and this has been very rewarding and satisfying for me. I must say that I discovered a new wonderful world! For 8 weeks I immersed myself in a fantastic world, where count feelings, shapes, colors, shadows, light, movement and energy. This experience has enriched me so much, it made me realize that  sharp photography doesn't mean better,  but that there is a parallel world, full of many different details and perhaps even more interesting, because it transmits emotions, feelings, different moods from sharp photography.
Now I graduated, I'm proud of it. My photographic repertoire has expanded, I learned new tricks of the trade, I feel richer than before, I have acquired more confidence in my strength and ability.
Thanks again to our mentor Alex, who was a superb teacher, a man of great humanity, of incredible ability to encourage, guide and push everyone over own limits.
Big thanks to the moderators of support, your feedback was always very encouraging. You did a good job!
Thanks also to my fellow students, for 8 weeks we were like a big family! Your work was very challenging and inspiring for me, it was very nice to be there in midst of you!___When we began my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography, +FotoAgnieszka Ambro was one of the participants who immediately made me feel happy and excited to be doing it again!

+Roxanne Bouche' Overton is a photographer whose work I've admired for a long time here on G+, and I was thrilled when she signed up for my recent Blurs and Unsharp Photography program.  Her comments -- and stunning work -- are a great reminder that any of us can always benefit from new ideas, and from a little extra work and dedication to our art.  Although she can do many things, I think of Roxanne as especially attuned to urban form and light; in exploring the Blur, she has further integrated time and motion into her beautiful world.  Enjoy!

Week 8:  Plus Post Blurs and Unsharp Photography: Guided Play 2015
The End of the Beginning

This is the last post - the graduation post for the mentorship led by +Alex Lapidus and is part of the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers founded by +Robin Griggs Wood .

The quality of the experience almost defies description.  It's been an alchemy of talented, experienced and generous teachers and fellow students.  It produced a potent environment in which to take risks and grow.  It encouraged expansion and pushed me out of my comfort zone and into that ether where the past meets the present and shapes the future.

I learned how to become more intimate with my camera as I let it move with me to capture the essences of my subjects.  I learned to look at things in new ways.  I learned to create images that were filled with emotion as well as visual content.

And now the formal part of the class is over.  But not the inspiration,  or the friendships, or the lessons learned.

I move into the future with more tools and building blocks than ever before.  I am filled with ideas and will spend a lifetime playing with them.

These mentorships are offered at no charge.  What you get out of them is invaluable.  Take a look and see if one of the subjects catches your eye and apply - get involved.  You'll never look back.

Thank you, Alex, for choosing me for this journey; for providing such a rich environment in which to grow.  Thank you +Heiko Mahr for pushing me to apply - it exceeded all expectations.  Thank you to the rest of the wonderfully talented and supportive mentors.  And, last but not least, my fellow travelers who also provided enthusiastic and generous support and such inspiration!

Attached is an album of photos that would never have been taken except for this class. ___+Roxanne Bouche' Overton is a photographer whose work I've admired for a long time here on G+, and I was thrilled when she signed up for my recent Blurs and Unsharp Photography program. Enjoy!

From the beginning of my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography, +Sandra Nesbit has been eloquent and insightful about finding her artistic voice (and even discovering the super power of bending light along the way!).  All her wonderful experiments and discoveries are in the service of finding and telling the stories that move her.  Please enjoy her wonderful post and album!

Wk8:  PlusPost – The End of the Beginning

Eight weeks have passed, and with the publication of this post the Blurs and Unsharp Photography Mentorship offered by Alex Lapidus will officially be over.  I’m saddened by that.  And yet, because of the remarkable quality of both content and community, I know this moment to be, not an ending, but a beginning.  Or, as Alex put it, “The End of the Beginning.”  This mentorship, and the title of week eight, beg a few questions:

If, through this (or any) training, we have been given agency to share the voice of our inner artist, what responsibility comes with that agency?

If we have been blessed with a passion for photography (or anything else), what responsibility comes with that passion?

What, in fact, are we beginning?  And, what do beginnings, agency, passion, and responsibility have to do with each other?

I believe it is simply this:  By virtue of the tools, time, talent and genuine compassion we have received in this program, we are challenged to use photography to speak our voice into the world.  This isn’t a challenge to become Ansel Adams; but to speak in whatever way we can, how ever often we can, to whomever happens to be there.  I believe that if we do so, we will receive the additional gift of being able to watch ourselves, and those we bring with us on the journey, come alive.

I have a favorite quote that I probably repeat too often, but here goes:  “Don’t ask what the world needs.  Ask instead, what makes you come alive.  Then go do it.  For what the world needs is people who have come alive.”  Howard Thurman

The attached album is one wee small voice.  But it’s mine.  The images all came out of this mentorship experience.  I hope you enjoy it.  And I hope you’ll consider a G+ Photographic Mentorship program one day.

+Alex Lapidus  whose skill is surpassed only by his patience and enthusiasm.
+Robin Griggs Wood  who is the founder of the G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers that does so much for so many.___From the beginning of my recent program on Blurs and Unsharp Photography, +Sandra Nesbit has been eloquent and insightful about finding her artistic voice (and even discovering the super power of bending light along the way!).  All her wonderful experiments and discoveries are in the service of finding and telling the stories that move her.  Please enjoy her wonderful post and album!

+Byron Sheldrick's terrific energy and creativity really shine through in this post and album about the recent Blurs and Unsharp Photography mentorship.  Always on the lookout for ideas, and ready to add new experiments to his repertoire, Byron was also intensely engaged with his fellow participants -- it seemed like he never missed a post, was always quick to help where he could, and was equally quick to notice and understand the projects everyone else was trying.  He was a real treat for me to have in the group.  Please enjoy these wonderful images, and keep an eye out for where Byron goes next!

For the past 8 weeks I've been so incredibly fortunate to have been participating in the "Blurs and Unsharp photography: Guided Play 2015" mentorship led by the incomparable +Alex Lapidus.  One of the fabulous +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers founded by +Robin Griggs Wood, it has been an exciting, exhausting, and rewarding experience.

This was the second G+ mentorship program I've participated in, and all I can say is that if you ever want a richly supportive and creative environment, that will push you and allow you to develop your artistic and technical abilities, don't hesitate the next time you see a call for participants.

For this mentorship I was challenged right from the start.  Having worked so hard to "perfect" my ability to take sharp and focused shots, I was suddenly asked to deliberately move the camera with the shutter open.  Up and down, sideways, move your feet, rotate the camera.  It turned my world upside down, and the results were ... well staggering.  I soon was looking for opportunities to take blurry shots. Where I once saw clear sharp lines, I now saw blurred possibilities.

We moved on from those first efforts at deliberate camera movement.  Waterfalls, ghosts, light trails, post-processing for blur (something I had done very little of), shooting in the Pep Ventosa style.  By the end, we were digging into the "toy box".  Shooting through bubble wrap, zip-lock bags, using fisheyes, beer bottles, and freelensing.  Through it all, we were shooting 100s of photos a week. I've never devoted so much intense time to my photography, and I loved every minute of it.

All through we were supported by each other and the fabulous team of mentors and crew assembled by +Alex Lapidus.  I won't even attempt to name them all, but collectively the environment was one that allowed artistic creation and exploration to blossom and flourish. Every week I felt inspired and enriched by the wonderful work of my fellow mentees, and feel that I now have a group of photography friends that spans the globe.

Personally, I feel that my whole approach to photography has changed.  Rather than simply seeing the picture in front of me, I now see the picture that might be.  And in doing so, I think I actually have found new (and sometimes better) ways of conveying the emotional impact of what I see.  It has also given me the confidence to continue exploring the world of blur.  Before I started this mentorship, I admired the blurry photographs I saw others post, but did not have any confidence that these were images I could create.  Who could imagine that by making things a bit blurry, so much clarity and direction could be achieved.

Thanks so much to everyone    ___+Byron Sheldrick's terrific energy and creativity really shine through in this post and album about the recent Blurs and Unsharp Photography mentorship.

Graduation Album - Diving deep into the blurred world

I just graduated the mentorship program Blurs & Unsharp Photography: Guided Play 2015 offered by +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers and lead by the wonderful +Alex Lapidus  together with a great team of mentors.
During the 8 weeks in the program we've got fantastic yet challenging assignments playing with new techniques and toys to create unsharp and blurred images and it was fun experimenting with all this.
It felt like diving deep into the blurred world, just loved it and it sure will remain in my photographic bag.
The great thing what I take away from this program is that I can convey a story with my blurred pictures, turning something ordinary in a magical shot and this really enriches my photography.

Thanks so much dear +Alex Lapidus and all the mentors for all your great support and guidance, thanks to all fellow-mentees for your inspiration and encouragement, we just had a great time!___+Christine Bichler has been a participant in Unsharp Saturday for quite awhile now, and I was thrilled to have her join my recent  *Blurs and Unsharp Photography* program!  From the darkest night to the brightest day, this selection of her photos really shows off her range, skill and taste.  Please enjoy her images, and check out her profile for much more!

Hang onto your hats for this fabulous post from +Eve Aebi, charging headlong with glorious abandon through the world of blur!  Both the post and her marvelous photos express the joy of the mentorship process and the artistic freedom we've been seeking throughout the Blurs and Unsharp Photography 2015 program.  Congratulations, Eve!

Joy Ride - Graduation Plus Post

What a ride this mentorship Blur and Unsharp Photography - Guided Play 2015 with our mentor +Alex Lapidus was!

It all began with a slightly blurred vision and we somewhat lost focus, then the ride got fast and the eyes tried to pan the scene in every direction. The ride got even wilder as we rotated and zoomed through space..Then, for a little while, we came into calmer waters where time seemed to stretch a little and people turned into ghosts. After that little break which gave us a moment to catch our breath, the speed picked up again and we tried to keep pace with moving points of view, the speed steadily increasing until we nearly reached the speed of light and our eyes could only grab multiple stills which overlapped to create a trippy perception.

This put us in the right mood to play with toys other than our cameras.and recreate the astonishing impressions we got from the first part of our ride. Two stretches were still to be conquered, one which nearly tore us into two pieces, one very energetic and the other calm and smooth. Then, finally, we reached the island of Play where the toy box was opened for us. Scarves, plastic bags, cling film, the top of a carafe, aperture shapes and many more toys were at our disposal, so much in fact that I felt lost for a while. I found my way back and so did the others. And, finally, it all made sense!

Phew! Take a breath,, let this experience settle!

I learned a lot in this mentorship, not only about the various techniques, but also about myself. Sometimes you just have to take the plunge and immerse yourself in a subject, wrestle with it and hopefully make peace with it, in one way or another.

Mentorships like this one wouldn't be possible without people like Alex, his helpers and the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers who offer their time, knowledge and help to us to become better, or more fine tuned, photographers. Also, the positivity and encouragement of fellow mentees is not to top. So, thank you all very much!

You shouldn't miss to partake in at least one such experience, so keep an eye out and watch the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers where new mentorships are announced. Take the chance - it'll change you, and your photography will never be the same again :)___Hang onto your hats for this fabulous post from +Eve Aebi, charging headlong with glorious abandon through the world of blur!  Both the post and her marvelous photos express the joy of the mentorship process and the artistic freedom we've been seeking throughout the Blurs and Unsharp Photography 2015 program.  Congratulations, Eve!

My Blurs and Unsharp Photography 2015 mentorship is reaching its culmination -- I certainly won't say winding down -- and I'm very excited to start showing you some of my participants' work play!  +Magda Sz has picked images ranging from the mystery of the feet to the joy of the fountain (she uses color too, when there's a good reason :-)  ) to capture at least a hint of her creativity throughout the program.  Be sure to check out her other photography, and her beautiful e-book of photo collages and combinations!

Graduation Album - 8 weeks with Blurs and Unsharp Photography

Over the last 8 weeks I took a part in the mentorship organized by +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers  - Blurs & Unsharp Photography: Guided Play 2015 and curated by great +Alex Lapidus  together with the team of amazing mentors.

We studied different ways of creating blurry and unsharp photos, we learnt how to implement it in our photography and what is the most important, we had a lot of fun with experimenting and helping each other.

I'm graduating now, more self-assured and confident, that I'm able to do it, that I know how and I see, that I can use so many different ways of expression in my photographs.

Thank you +Alex Lapidus  and all of the team of mentors! Thank you dear fellow-mentees!

What a fabulous program this is going to be from +Tamara Pruessner!  Be sure to check it out, and sign up on her original post!

Summer Mentorship

Right now, I am announcing my own photography mentorship program - "Building An Image with +Tamara Pruessner".   This is the second time I have ran this mentorship and while the first had bumps due to a family loss, I am super excited about trying this again.

Sharing this post is highly encouraged, but please disable comments so people will go to the original post.

This will be a 6-week program, working on design elements of a photograph that will make you "FEEL", which to me, is the single most important job a photograph can do.  Make emotion.

If you would like to participate in a highly interactive, community-based learning project, then please read on and APPLY!

+Tamara Pruessner will be taking on a handful of people for a special mentorship program called "Building An Image".  This mentorship is designed to help you learn, search for, and apply design elements of a photograph to bring forth the emotions that make images memorable.  It will focus on rules and when to break them as well as elements such as color and when not to use it, patterns, lines, shapes, etc.

This course is NOT how to use your camera, but IS how to see and build and image with the camera and skills you already have.  I will be happy to give some guidance on technical aspects as it relates to the weekly lessons, but I will not be focusing on f-stops and apertures.

Up to 5 photographers will be selected for a 6-week on-line apprenticeship program which will include lessons, assignments,  Google hangouts are possible, and informal discussions are encouraged. Mainly, the goal is for everyone to have fun, collaborate, and learn from each other.

Selections will be announced on Friday, July 10th for the mentorship which will begin within days of the announcement of selected mentorees.

Selection criteria will include:

• You should be interactive here at G+, as you will be expected to participate in this program giving feedback and comments to others.
• You have little previous art studies, as this program is designed for those who have not had the opportunity to add this skill set to their knowledge base.
• You should be taking and posting photographs regularly.  (The class itself will be private to the group  except for the option of a public display album of your best work at the end.) You may publicly post your own achievements and I encourage it!!

To be considered for selection, please comment to this main post only: (not to any reshares)

and answer the following questions in your comment:
1) Photography skill level
2) Photo editing software used most
3) Favorite subjects to photograph
4) Aspirations within photography
5) Current job or profession (or favorite hobby outside of photography)
6) Previous art studies

EXAMPLE ANSWERS
1) Intermediate hobby photographer
2) Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop CS3
3) Trees, landscapes, waterfalls
4) To sell prints of my work
5) Full-time grocery store clerk, and I collect bottle caps.
6) I have no previous art studies

The mentorship program  is a lot of fun and has great interaction, it also requires a commitment to complete the weekly assignments.  If you feel you won't have time to dedicate to going out and taking lots of pictures, then please consider allowing others the chance to participate.

+Kyle Wilson - your earburn as requested.___What a fabulous program this is going to be from +Tamara Pruessner!  Be sure to check it out, and sign up on her original post!

I spotted this fully laden pod carrier at our local art and wine festival; looks like alien activities are stepping up to wholesale levels in this region.

Mysteries

This is one of my favorite photos, shot on film in 2002 (and scanned shortly thereafter -- sorry about the low image quality).  I've shared it here before, but I think not since 2011, so I wanted to offer it as a welcome to new followers and to the folks following my Antarctica collection; I do have additional images from that trip that I'll post for you.
