There's some kind of a bug in Android 5 on Nexus 5. I was trying to backup everything last night and that was a painful experience. Basically, storage kept failing. Rebooting the device and reconnecting to my laptop would fix the problem momentarily. That was last night, and the backup was successful.

This morning, my Nexus 5 was acting sluggish. Then HERE Maps would not launch. Then the device said there is no SD card (WTF?). So I reboot and that wiped all app data.

All podcasts... gone.
All photos... gone.
All audiobooks... gone.
Offline maps for HERE Maps and TomTom... gone.

But every app is still installed.

No big loss; I had created a backup of everything last night. Anyways. I'm going to wipe the device and start fresh.

With Android 5, some apps I used regularly got Sherlocked...
- Skiplock... now built right into Android (trusted devices)
- Lux... the new auto-brightness algorithm works well
- ACDisplay... new lock screen shows all my notifications

Apps that survived...
- Cal... I can't use the stock calendar app; it needs a lot of work
- Authy... better than Google Authenticator and I don't know what Google can do about it
- HERE Maps and TomTom... offline navigation (not just offline maps)
- Textra SMS... I can haz dark/black theme for SMS app?

Apps on the rope...
- Pedometer... good chance that Google Fit will replace this
- Shush... this may be on the way out with priority notifications

After 4 Days of enjoying my Samsung Gear Live, which got at the Google I/O, it is no longer possible to use it. The mechanism to hold the power supply in place broke after only 4 loading cycles. Even if i did see this coming, I expected it would last some month instead of days. I'm pretty disappointed with this build quality.

/** UPDATE: I followed +Eric ERK's advice and called Google again and specifically requested an RMA. They agreed and will be getting in contact by email to arrange a replacement. **/

I started my torture by trying to arrange a repair through samsung's website but that ended abruptly because it wants a "model code" which it won't help you find.
Then I tried samsung's phone support which spent 20 minutes listing menu options at me before telling me no-one was home and kicking me out.
I didn't give up and instead called the number Google provided in the email where they promised "limited support, repairs or replacements within the US (including shipping) for one year" for the Android Wear devices they gave us.
The operator there was very helpful, knew the device and understood the problem; but because it was a hardware issue he connected me to samsung's hardware support line (it turns out they were home after all).
The samsung operator couldn't understand the problem beyond "watch and charger do not connect" and couldn't understand that I did not have a proof of purchase for the watch (I didn't purchase it! And seeing as it goes on sale tomorrow neither has anyone else!).
Eventually she managed to create a ticket in their system for someone to call me back sometime in the next 48 hours to tell me where to send the watch or something.
She also informed me that I would have to pay a repair cost for the damage done by their design flaw and that the further information that I was going to receive could not be emailed or texted instead.

So yeah... die in a fire Samsung!___

Next up: clearing storage.

Right now, my phone storage is ~68% full.

Earlier today, moved all photos and screenshots off to an external hard drive. Then disabled offline caching of Picasa albums and deleted a few games that I seldom play.

Next up: decide which offline GPS app to retain: Copilot, Garmin or TomTom. Each of those occupy ~2GB of storage. So I'm expecting ~4GB of savings there.

Then I need to unsubscribe from podcasts I do not listen to. Expecting another 1GB of savings there.

Making some progress with my phone's battery life. Made some modifications today to how and when apps work.

Now the battery drain is less than 1% per hour in standby mode. Phone is in deep sleep 93%+ of the time.

Now I need to see how that number is affected if I leave WiFi on all the time with keep-alive only when display is on.

I'm reading through the comments at the end of this article. Am I the only one who thinks that the current crop of smartwatches are good only for solving first world problems?

- Checking who is calling and take the phone out only if it is important
- Don't want to take phone out of pocket to check notifications
- Don't want to interrupt my run to check if a notification is urgent or not
- Adjusting media playback volume using the smartwatch because it is so damn hard to pull out the phone
- Checking the time on a smartwatch is faster than taking out the phone
- Phone displays are too bright for checking the time in the middle of the night

I have mixed feelings about this. Nike promised an Android app 2 summers ago when they were selling the OG FuelBand, so I bought one on day one of its release in Canada. The Android app never materialized, and my FuelBand broke while moving. Also, it isn't supported by this app.

Am I going to get another FuelBand? Unlikely. But this does give me a reason to lift my ban on buying Nike stuff that had been in place for the better part of the past 2 years.
