HDR Before and After: The Parliament [ bit.ly/10OgmOK ]

This is the Before-and-After for the HDR image The Parliament I posted on Wednesday.

At the top, you see the three original source images straight out of the camera. This image is based on a 6-shot exposure series with shutter speeds between 0.6s and 15s. At the lower left, you see the result of merging those shots into a 32-bit HDR and subsequent tone-mapping using the Details Enhancer option of Photomatix Pro 4.2. And finally, at the lower right, you see the final image after a number of post-processing steps executed in Photoshop CS6.

Vertical has just become awesome!!!    Original image at [ bit.ly/fp-ltbl ]

Before the latest update to Google+, vertical images sucked on the web almost everywhere, except Pinterest.

But now, vertical has become awesome. Why? Because in the new stream, it means more screen space for your photos. So, you may have to re-think your reluctance against uploading photos in portrait orientation.

About the Image
This is a special version on one of my HDR Vertoramas. I never uploaded it anywhere because the format is just so web-unfriendly. To make it more presentable, I cropped it before I published it originally. But finally the time for really tall images has come! ;)

Forget about Adobe! Just use Google+!

Who needs Photoshop or Lightroom anymore??? Google's Auto Enhance feature will make your photos awesome with a single click... or so they say.

I have to admit that my head just exploded with all the new features introduced over the past few hours. Auto Enhance is just one of them.

Have you tried it? How does it work for you?

The Parliament (HDR) [ bit.ly/16eyYdJ ]

This is a 6-exposure HDR image of the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest, Hungary. Before I went on that trip, I did my usual Internet scouting on the entire city of Budapest, and sure enough, I came across a ton of images of this Parliament building. So, I was prepared! But when I arrived there and set up my tripod just across the river (Danube), something strange happened. [ Read more at bit.ly/16eyYdJ ]

Dramatic skies over Wiblingen Abbey. (Ulm, Germany)
(5-shot HDR: 3 original shots + 2 add-ons)

The entrance to the abbey is not a particularly dramatic scene (not from this angle view, anyway), and the original image was not working to my taste. As I haven't made a dramatic processing in a while, I tried that approach, and it started coming together. And that sky was just begging for such processing :)

My take on a scene that was originally shot by +Klaus Herrmann. Source images copyright by Klaus Herrmann - farbspiel-photo.com - all rights reserved. Go to farbspiel-photo.com/ppw for details.

There will be no Creative Suite 7.
After nearly 10 years, Adobe abandons its Creative Suite entirely to focus on Creative Cloud

Adobe first launched Creative Suite 1 back in 2003, and now, ten years and six versions later, the company is taking a left turn: Adobe is abandoning its Creative Suite entirely to focus efforts on Creative Cloud.

Adobe is pointing all of its energy towards Creative Cloud, eliminating the familiar retail box in the process. Like last year, the company is releasing an updated suite of applications this June, newly branded as “CC” apps. This includes: Photoshop CC, InDesign CC, Illustrator CC, Dreamweaver CC and Premiere Pro CC.

For creatives that rely on the company’s upgrade paths, some will be pleased to find that anyone with a CS 3 or later serial number will get their first Creative Cloud year for $29.99 per month. Foreveryo... more »

Tutorial: Manual HDR Bracketing Explained [ bit.ly/11YyKCB ]

Have you ever been in a situation where you wanted to make a HDR image but the Auto Exposure Bracketing of your camera just did not cut it? It did not cover the entire dynamic range of the scene and you ended up with blown-out highlights and blocked-up shadows anyway? This is when you need manual HDR bracketing. But what’s the right technique for bracketing manually?

In this tutorial, I am going to show you a simple technique for freeing yourself from the limitations of your camera’s AEB function by using Manual Exposure Bracketing (MEB). We will go through the camera setup and a simple procedure for shooting the images without having to do any math. With a bit of practice, you can even use this technique when you’re shooting hand-held HDR.

Check it out at [ bit.ly/11YyKCB ]

Before-and-After: Light my Way (HDR Vertorama) [ bit.ly/ZPlHA9 ]

Here is the before and after of the HDR Vertorama I uploaded yesterday. This is good way of showing what post-processing brought to a particular image.

In this case, the final image was merged to HDR, tone-mapped and then stitched to create a Vertorama (vertical panorama). It was created from 12 individual photos. On the left, you see these 12 source photos and on the right you see the stitched image before and after the post-processing work.

Light my Way (HDR Vertorama) [ bit.ly/ZPlHA9 ]

This is a 12-shot HDR Vertorama taken at St. Micheal’s Cathedral in Toronto, Canada. This was actually the first series of source photos I took at this place when I was still very much in a scouting kinda mode. I found the church almost empty at that time and I felt that I would take a quick series of shots just to have them under my belt. I was pretty sure that I was going to come back to this place to make a few more serious attempts at taking the shots since I was fascinated with the rich colors of the ceiling. It did not quite work out the way I wanted.

Read the whole story and tons of information on how this image was created at [ bit.ly/ZPlHA9 ].

The other face of copyright law: Using it to sue the crap out of creatives!

The video below is a very insightful talk held by Andy Baio essentially posing the following question:

Is copyright used against its original purpose as a new business model for creatives to make money off of suing other creatives?

As a creative who may be on either side of this, you should really spend some time thinking about this question.

Background

Copyright law, the fair-use rule and the legal system in general work in a way that forces creatives to pay serious amounts of money to settle a case out of court even though they may have a strong case to defend themselves. Doing so in front of a court may easily cost years of time and 6-figure sums in the end. So settling to pay a 5-figure sum despite being sued for unjustifiable reasons seems to bethe mor... more »

Photographing living animals... can be fun!

Here is a Behind the Scenes video of what you have to go through until you have that final shot.

Joel Sartore is a National Geographic photographer whose personal mission is to photograph 5,000 animal species in studio light before he retires.

Good luck, Joel! ;)

On a serious note: Joel's mission is really to contribute something to the preservation of these species by raising the public awareness. According to the UN Environment Programme, 150-200 animal species become extinct every day.

150-200! Let that sink in for a minute!

Who's really winning? When contest organizers take all your rights

This is one more example of a photo contest that takes all the rights to your photos forever when you submit one. I have always been very suspicious of such questionable contests. After all, this is a really cheap way for the organizers to gain full rights to do whatever they want with your photos.

Yes, that includes using them in a commercial context and selling them even if you're not winning!

Would you participate in such a contest? What's your take?

So you want to be a National Geographic Photographer?

Watch Joel Sartore's story. Apparently, it's like being a mix of James Bond and an Astronaut (according to Joel).

But the downside is that among the 30,000+ photos Joel shoots every year, there are 3-4 keepers. How about that for a ratio, eh?

Reaching for the Sky, Death Valley National Park, CA

Question: Which composition rules do you see used in this photo?

What happens when the light is not just perfect at the location you are photographing? - Move yourself to the location where the light IS perfect. The night before I took this shot we had photographed Vermilion Cliff but the good weather was stalled over Death Valley. So, we drove through the night to catch this fantastic sunrise in Death Valley...and flew back later that day.

How was this image created?
This image is all about textures and and color. I used rule of the thirds (twice), complementary colors, side lighting in the sky and the ground to enhance textures. The sky on the right side was bit over exposed and required some... more »
