Html5 netflix in Chrome on Linux.

(via +Josh Sabboth)

y'all ready for this?
TRUELY NATIVE NETFLIX VIEWING IS NOW AVAILABLE

(granted, there are a couple hoops to jump through).

Step 1: Get Chrome. I'm using the v38 beta, but I assume it works on v37 (I use Firefox mainly, but chrome is the only browser aside from IE that has what is needed)

Step 2: Get the  User-Agent Switcher for chrome
( https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user-agent-switcher-for-c/djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg )

Step 3: add a custom Chrome agent for v37 Windows x86_64
( Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/37.0.2049.0 Safari/537.36 )

Step 4: Switch your user-agent to the new custom one, and go to netflix

Step 5: enjoy!

Why this works: Chrome (and IE) devs have been working closely with Netflix to get the needed DRM code required for HTML5 streaming, and recently Netflix unveiled that both IE and Chrome on Windows supports HTML5 streaming now.

I figured that the Linux version of Chrome is close enough to the Windows version to ALSO contain this code, so I decided to try it out. And I was right!
Proof that it works on my system: http://i.imgur.com/YVcrvCN.png___Html5 netflix in Chrome on Linux.

OnePlus One Invite

Borrowing from +Amon RA a bit in terms of encryption.

Since I have a couple excess invites, I don't want to hog them for myself. Since I think I'll make Francis proud, here's an encrypted invite.

I encrypted the invite URL with a cypher named after a Roman general... The key is somewhere between 1 and 35.

First impression of the OnePlus One : Gorgeous screen, no yellow band, crystal clear image imo. Really love the feeling of back cover, I almost regret buying the flip cover ;)

Update :

After using the OnePlus One for half a day I think I'll probably sell it.

It's too big for my personal taste.
CM isn't as stable as I would like it to be (got a few force closes today during normal usage).
OK Google doesn't work half of the time (microphone issues?), I have to yell really loud to get a laggy reaction.
There are lots of tiny cosmetic UI failure details that bother me.

I guess I feel more comfortable using stock on my Nexus 5 (which I'm actually using to type this update).

I'll try to give it a few more days though.

It's probably one of the last ones ever built, and it came with the original box and papers.

My retro-console collection needs more room now ☺

Hex wallpaper created from concept to play store download in a matter of hours. Impressive 🙌

So, after reading +Søren Siim Nielsen 's post[1] about HexPaper[2] I got to thinking it'd be a nice little project to test out Android Studio (I'd only used Eclipse previously). The process was relatively painless until I got to actually building and signing the app.

I'd installed Android Studio ages ago but hadn't used it, so it was terribly out of date and complained about SDK versions. I updated everything and got the project started. Because I have no graphics skills at all, I allowed AS to generate my icon (can you tell? :-)  ).

The project layout took me a little while to get my head around. In my first build, my java source files ended up not being under the "com.frisbeeworld.hexpaper" folder, so the project built OK, but none of the classes were in the com.frisbeeworld.hexpaper package, so when Android tried to launch some of the activities, it failed with a ClassNotFoundException which took me some time to track down!

Actually writing the Live Wallpaper and Daydream was really quite easy. The graphics just involve calculating the background colour and filling the canvas with it, then dumping the text on top. Background delayed handlers tell it to redraw once a second to update the colours and text.

It's been long enough since I wrote an Android app that I tried to use a PreferenceActivity, which is now deprecated for a fragment-ised version. Oops.

Deploying to run on my Android device worked out of the box in AS, though debugging was a bit trickier because Live Wallpapers aren't Launcher-launched apps.

It took me a long while to work out how to build a signed release version of the APK. I started playing around with Gradle build files, until I found the Build Variants window - I could just choose the release variant, then use the Build>Generate Signed APK... option to create the final APK.

Did I mention I did this while drinking some Oban?

Still waiting to throw my money...

Very depressing to see all these people in my G+ timeline unbox their +OnePlus  One... :(

The +OnePlus One packaging is probably the prettiest I've ever seen. The red and white really work nicely together.

And check out the USB cable and the SIM removal tool - they just look so good.___Still waiting to throw my money...

Someone sent me a video from WWDC, about UX, and I wasn't allowed to watch it because of my OS/browser, which is a perfect reason to take everything Apple says with a huge grain of salt.

Valid points from a BE perspective.

Europe: The Uber-Is-Not-What-It-Seems Case

The last weeks I've been annoyed with both sides quibbling in the press in Belgium about whether or not +Uber (taxi service on the cheap for some; peer ride sharing for others) is a good thing.

Let me start by saying that "Uber" is a terrible word. If a startup wanted to make way in one of the most startup-conservative and change-inert countries that is Belgium, it could not have done any worse than pick an umlauted force term that reminds many of a dark racist Nazi era of occupation in the history of Belgium (and granted, it also comes from Nietzsche). I don't think the US would have dealt lightly with a European startup called "Niggr" after all?

Normally I, being on the entrepreneurial tech side of things, would support more power to the people and away from bureaucracy and big corp's any time, as in the case of peer music sharing or bitcoin. In the case of these rideshares (incl. Lyft and the European competitors) however, I just can't seem to shake an eerie feeling.

The reason why Uber is not a good idea in Belgium, is that all the rules we have concerning taxis are there, not as bureaucracy, but as protection.

Protection of rights: Exploitation of drivers is one. There is a real threat that taxi drivers would be squeezed out by big taxi companies and would work at below-minimum-wage salaries.

Protection of quality: The rules are the same for every company. In that the taxi market, at least by design, is already sufficiently open. You'd want a driver you can understand, one that handles payments correctly and does not trick you or the meter. No one is served by multiple drivers begging for your commission, and we do not approve of tips in Belgium. Having an explosion in the number of taxis in the small streets of Brussels or at the airport would make traffic worse and be the opposite of ecology.

Protection of duties: Taxes need to be paid. Drivers need to be insured and be full employees, in the sense of paying for social security, pensions etc.

Protection of security: Perhaps the most important of all. You do not want a race that leads to accidents. Cars need to be maintained and pass QA.

What Uber tries to do is to ignore all these aspects. Even if you do so in the slightest, of course you can run a more efficient operation and break into a market. That is why Belgian and European authorities have stepped in to block false competition. If competition is to happen, it needs to happen on the same basic set of rules that a modern government should provide. Unless those rules are archaic with respect to recent technological (r)evolutions, which is clearly not the case here: The effect of individuals offering their car for services could have been created twenty years ago via a phone switchboard instead of an app. In fact, I think we have seen the transportation disruption already: the old-fashioned hitching a ride.

Uber's supporters claim to support startups and a better world, but I cannot ignore that in fact Uber is not so little any more. It's fast becoming the RyanAir of taxis. Proponents also seems to prefer a deeper capitalist world, one where the rich-poor-gap is increased, over a better one.

That's why Uber (and YouTube nota bene) is sponsoring the Gumball 3000. A race that has been outlawed in Europe and notably Belgium, for having a complete lack of respect for any law or speed limit; and for that reason recently had to move to the US after a successful ban in Europe. After all, in Belgium, no person, no matter how rich or no matter which car, is more entitled to break road safety laws than someone else. Gumballers' behavior in the past in Belgium was simply atrocious. I don't care if Joel Zimmerman (deadmau5) is driving a car or how good their PR is; he's on the wrong side.

Why then is it so difficult for the Belgian (or Brussels) government to defend their negative stance on Uber, which they, in particular, +Brigitte Grouwels, so bravely (but always a bit cluelessly) did? Well, Oxfam calculated that if the country with the smallest rich-poor-gap would win the Soccer World Cup this year, it would be Belgium. Heh, England would barely make it to the second round. Having such privileges and achievements - one might even say 'civilization' - crestes an economic penalty when competing with a world that is less and less open, less and less fair, and somewhat self-destructive.

I say this all without having tried Uber personally, which I admit is a blind gap. Uber is also not one specific thing. Their service in Amsterdam is for instance totally different and aimed at the high-end, and Uber seems to have a few more opaque types of services.

That said, no one I know uses a taxi in Belgium. Taxis are very expensive, just as our own cars are (but that price we have already budgeted). The reasons are the same: for quality, as an ecologic measure, as well as a tax revenue (which in its turn serves redistribution of wealth, which in the end is what it is all about). And that's why a disruptive effort cannot change anything in this case.

I also want to add that California originally banned Uber as well, only to revert that decision later on, and today is again back to souring the milk, which unfortunately in the US usually comes down to a mediocre financial decentive, rather than a philosophical one. By the way, Uber is in part backed by Goldman Sachs capital, a biggie (too big to fail) that is not always perceived as clean itself, with involvement in the mortgage crisis and the recent sovereign debt crisis.

Some reading material:

+Neelie Kroes did not support the Belgian ban, but I believe she is wrong this time: http://www.standaard.be/cnt/dmf20140416_042

More bloggers disagreed: http://www.mondaynote.com/2014/04/27/uber-airbnb-vs-cartels-and-regulators/
Of course, it's unlikely that a Belgian taxi company or cartel (they do exist and need to be fought) is going to create a good Android app. Unions and rights movements are also critical of standard taxi companies.

Today, in many countries in Europe, taxi drivers rightfully fought back: http://www.standaard.be/cnt/dmf20140611_01136776
Not in Belgium, because we love peace and quiet, and because professionals feel backed by their democratic spokespersons, as they should. The British have for once joined us and felt particularly upset, because Uber 'conquered' London's black cabs today.

Atrocious Gumball 3000: http://www.theverge.com/2014/6/10/5793350/big-money-fast-cars-and-a-nyan-cat-this-is-the-gumball-3000

TLDR; Uber is not good entrepreneurship.

While I don't have a fb account I'm actually considering the deletion of my G+ and even Twitter account...

The "privacy" concerns are not the only reason, I think I also got a bit bored with the whole concept of being online all the time and pretend that I'm more social that way...

I mainly use G+ and Twitter to be informed about the latest technology trends and I noticed that I can just do fine without them. I'm not really interested in people's opinions about what not (especially biased tech opinions), and I don't use it to interact with real life friends so much, so why should I still bother investing time in it?
