Google Local San Francisco781,523*RSVP Here* — http://goo.gl/6Uh6A Got a flair for design? Learn to build your own private terrarium world at our DIY Terrarium Workshop & Cocktail Party.  Don’t worry if you’ve never designed your own terrarium. The fantastic designers behind *MakersKit* (http://makerskit.com/) will be on hand to offer personal instruction and advice. You’ll also have everything you need to make your own glass terrarium to take home with you: charcoal, pea pebbles, soil, moss and an abundance of succulents and indoor plants from which to choose. Personalize your eco-creation with a found object, rock or figurine — we’ll have a few to pick from or bring a favorite from home. After we’ve created our tiny living worlds, we’ll sip on layered ‘terrarium cocktails’ hand-crafted by local bartenders and nibble on gourmet treats. We’ll also engage in a little show-and-tell; the designer of the most creative, original and novel terrarium will be rewarded with something extra special to help further their creative spirit. *Be sure to RSVP for you and up to 1 guest. We’ll send you a confirmation invite as soon as we’ve read your fantastic new reviews*. — http://goo.gl/6Uh6A Remember that Power User events are ONLY for our most active Google+ Local users (those who have written a large number of quality reviews and continue to write new, quality reviews each month), and their guests, so start reviewing places you’ve visited.Power Users + Friends: DIY Terrarium Workshop & Cocktail Party2013-07-11 18:30:0062

If we want the internet to be taken seriously, trolling needs to end.

Trolling - the act of over-reacting to the point of absurdity, causing shit storms for the sake of it, harassing people to get reactions, etc - is increasingly becoming a product of a bygone internet era. With anonymity comes confidence, and with confidence comes abuse. The internet used to, primarily, be a place for fun and news, but has grown into the most important platform for global democracy. If someone has internet access, they have a voice - and people want their voices to be seriously considered. The internet has grown up, deciding the fate of legislation, spreading open and free information, and becoming the largest, most important community building platform the human race has ever had. As the net grows up, it's time for its users to as well.

In general, I'm against anonymity on the... more »

Man. This is a great Android ad.

This is amazing differentiation from Apple and I'm glad Android nailed it so well with this spot. Android's biggest strength (outside of all that Google stuff that works so seamlessly) is the diversity of its products. From Apple's stark, monochromatic, device worship-inducing ads about the "best X ever for everyone", Android has taken a really smart step to left with an energetic ad that quickly and effectively messages "There's no one Android for everyone, but you have choices. You can express yourself with the phone you choose. There's a phone for YOU." It's a great, fun ad!

Movie adaptions of video games can work. Without agency.

I've never disagreed with Satchbag more. His conclusion is that video games adapated into movies lose player agency, choice, and atmosphere. All of this is, of course, possible, but making a blanket statement like this about art puts very little faith in creators. Movies aren't about having a choice. They're about participating in an immersive story as determined by the director, writers, producers, and countless other roles. Satchbag brings up some choices in Bioshock as being core to the game, but I never felt that my choices in any Bioshock game had massive repercussions that dramatically altered the game's narrative. Sure, I got a different ending in the original (that felt remarkably detached from the previous 15hrs), but I was in the world Kevin Levine's wanted me to be without choice for most of it. Hell. Not having choice at all is the big twist. Levine wanted to tell me a specific story about Rapture and my role in it. It's not so different than what a film director would do.

For a story driven game like The Last of Us, a movie would work brilliantly. For World of Warcraft, there's more than enough lore to create an interesting vignette. Assassin's Creed could even narrow in its scope to create a compelling story. Mario? Grand Theft Auto? Maybe not so much. I would have appreciated this video a lot more if it focused on the kind of game that could work most easily or has the greatest potential to fail. It came across that Satchbag is so desperately in love with the experience he had with Bioshock, that he rejects any other interpretation of it without considering its potential as another piece of art. We've heard this argument before about how books are better than movies - but we know it isn't necessarily true. Put in the hands of a great creator, movies based on books can become faithful representations of the spirit of their source material (I'm looking at you Paprika and Lord of the Rings). With something like Bioshock which has so much atmosphere and, frankly, a very straightforward, singular story that deviates very little throughout most of the game, I could see a movie working very nicely.

Movies don't require agency. They require believability. Is the character reacting a reasonable way to their situation? Does the atmosphere give me the same tension the game did? Is the story compelling? Did I learn something about this world? If those things succeed, agency isn't required for a masterpiece. Agency is not required for great art. People don't need agency to feel the feelings that give a game its spirit. Claiming that video games are some kind of super medium is misunderstanding the different strengths of each medium. The adaptations that work best are the ones that best take advantage of those strengths. Books for immersion and world building. Movies for feelings. Video games for agency. What matters most between them is the spirit which can be retained if treated respectfully. There's a reason Alien Isolation worked better than Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Long story short, Satchbag's conclusion misunderstands the intrinsic values of certain mediums while simultaneously ignoring successes and disasters in movie / game adaptations to protect a property he loves. That's fine. It's okay to be protective over material you love. But instead of placing video games on a pedestal, this video would have been much more agreeable if it focused on HOW Bioshock could become a movie, using examples of past adaptions that became masterpieces. It's no secret it can work if it's in the right hands.___

Comcast is making me crazy - So I'm going to do something about it

After learning that my internet speeds were slow and #Comcast  refusing to credit me for the time my modem's firmware was out of day, I've decided to do something a little wacko: record my internet speeds every single day.

Backstory
I called Comcast's billing department yesterday asking to know how long my modem's firmware has been out of date. The reason why is because I recently realized that my internet speeds are 1/3rd of what I'm paying for. My plan? To get credited for every day that my modem's firmware was out of date since its reasonable to assume that my speeds had been slow since the firmware went out of date. Comcast updated my firmware a few days ago giving me the speeds I required, only to have the speed dip again back to where it was, reaching an incredible... more »

To get credited for every day that my modem's firmware was out of date since its reasonable to assume that my speeds had been slow since the firmware went out of date. Comcast updated my firmware a few days ago giving me the speeds I required, only to have the speed dip again back to where it was, reaching an incredible 2mps down yesterday.

The call
Immediately when I called I was told, "Bro. You can't just call and say your internet's been slow for a month. You thought it was just dandy. I mean, come on bro." Yes. They called me bro and tried to start a fight like I was talking to someone in a bar. Let's not forget that you pay for peace of mind when you get a fast plan. I don't expect to push it to its limits every damn second. I eventually talked him down and he told me he could only credit me for the days I could prove my internet was slow. I asked him to tell me the day my modem went out of date and to credit me every day since then. He didn't like that and told me again I'd have to prove the slow speeds. I asked if this meant that I would have to use Speedtest.net every day and call every day. He said no. I said that that's what he was telling me to do. He said no.

So here's what I'm going to do
I'm going to do a Speed Test every. single. day. and take a selfie in front of it in my apartment to prove that it is, indeed, in my apartment. Is it crazy? Vindictive? Annoying? Fuck yes it is, but holy shit am I dedicated to showing them that I'm paying for more than I'm getting. Comcast, like a punk ass teenager, apparently need constant checking-in with.

I can't wait to publish my results :)___

I hate Comcast.

Long story short, my internet speeds have been 1/3rd of the advertised for some undetermined length of time.

I noticed when I thought Destiny was lagging. It shouldn't have been as my apartment's internet plan is 105 down, 20 up (we use about 600 gigs every month as a house). Running a speed test yesterday, I found out it was 45 down, 20 up. So I contacted support and they said that they would do a health check on my modem. That's when I learned my modem's firmware was out of date yadda yadda yadda. So they rebooted it and touted, "Mission accomplished! I'm seeing great improvement!" My speeds had increased by 10mps, brining it to 54 down. I told them this and they said that it should take 24hrs.

Oooookay.

So then I searched my inbox for Speed Tests that I've done and it was all over the map. From 50 down to... more »

So then I searched my inbox for Speed Tests that I've done and it was all over the map. From 50 down to 120 down, it was obvious that my internet (which is really expensive) was not living up to its promise. So I asked for a credit. I sent them links to my other speed tests and their answer was: Buy the Triple Play plan for only $30 more a month! Are. You. Fucking. Kidding. Me.

What bothers me most about this that I had to check myself and contact them. They don't care if my speeds are super slow compared to what I'm paying for. They also don't treat me like a customer, instead viewing me as a sales opportunity even in support interactions. So I guess I get to run speed tests at regular intervals to check up on my service going forward? Ugh. Come. On.

Caveat: Yes, I know that every site won't have 105mps speed, but a speed test absolutely should be the advertised speed.___

Woman who refused to bake wedding cakes for gay couples cries.

Fighting a $150,000 fine in Oregon for discrimination after refusing to bake a lesbian couple a wedding cake, this woman broke into tears describing her process at the Values Voters Summit (a Republican summit as exemplified by the clapping in the video). What's funny to me is that it appears her "values" aren't about her intricate process of making people happy with highly personalized cakes, but rather with discriminating against certain people who aren't like her. Oregon, obviously, agrees. Sorry Republicans. You don't "own" values.

Now, this makes me happy - and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Is someone sad? Yes, absolutely. Are sad people good? No, not always. Don't try to be politically correct by saying, "You shouldn't relish in anyone's unhappiness."... more »

Now, this makes me happy - and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Is someone sad? Yes, absolutely. Are sad people good? No, not always. Don't try to be politically correct by saying, "You shouldn't relish in anyone's unhappiness." Untrue. What you're witnessing when you're watching this is someone experiencing a consequence. This person is realizing that her actions are not socially acceptable and not in the greater interest of their declared values. While I'm not saying we shouldn't be empathetic at the risk of making these people double down, we need to realize that moments like this advance equality across the nation. It's not an easy realization for everyone to make.

In a post on Facebook she quotes evangelical pastor Rick Warren in response to her bakery shutting down: "...to love someone means that you must agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don't have to compromise convictions to be compassionate." Well. Yes. Yes actually you do. What a dangerous, dangerous belief if helping people is your honest motive.

So, sorry for your loss baker Melissa Klein. I hope you learned something and that you don't become a super villain out of spite.

God damn it. I'm addicted to Destiny.

Destiny is deeply flawed first person MMO that ultimately succeeds because of its refined mechanics. While Bungie is clearly committed to supplying players with continuous new content, Destiny holds too much back for its own good. It feels incomplete, but hey - at least character progression and loot drops are exciting. Despite the game completely failing on many of its fronts, Destiny's a game that keeps bringing me back time and time again to play with my friends and continue crafting a badass Warlock.

Story
Destiny's story is shallow, incoherent, and obviously an afterthought. It's a shame given the amount of potential in its top-level lore. There's a Traveler that brings light with it.

The Darkness is coming to kill the Traveler in the form of several alien races. You play as a Guardian who tries to stop the Darkness from hurting the Traveler. There was a great war. Paired with the game's epic and detailed set dressing, there's more than enough to create a compelling story. Unfortunately, the story doesn't go deeper than the opening cut scene and it's the biggest disappoint about Destiny.

A simple story isn't always a bad thing, but Destiny's is hackneyed, shallow, and delivered poorly. The characters start to sound like parodies of sci-fi tropes early in story, dramatically referencing vague events that are never explained. There's only so much, "Light is good. Dark is bad." that the player can be hit over the head with. It's hard to care about what you're doing when most of the story gets drowned out by gunfire and you know little to nothing about the enemies you're fighting other than their weak points. Unfortunately, the most interesting parts of the story (read: almost all of the actual lore) are only available on Bungie's website.

Destiny left me hurting - badly - for an interactive experience more like Mass Effect. In Destiny, there are no characters to talk to, nothing to read in-game about what you're seeing, and nothing or no one to care about. Moderately interesting characters do show up about halfway through the story, but their mystery is left a mystery with absolutely zero arc. You don't know their motivations or back stories - and you never find out. Who is this mysterious figure? Why is this woman telling me to get something? Why don't I ever see them again? Who are the Awoken or Exo? The player is left without any answers, shy of a short paragraph that they can read online.

Games' stories should be allowed to grow over time, but Destiny's doesn't go anywhere in the 10ish hours it takes to complete the campaign. It's an unacceptable outcome for a game with so much more to give. Destiny's story is, surely, already determined, but Bungie left so much of it out that it ultimately hurts the player's sense of purpose. It would be especially annoying if the story players want is included (exclusively) in DLC. Bungie should not be excused for their mishandling of Destiny's story delivery. I want to know more, but Bungie gave me nothing.

Gameplay
This is where Bungie nails it and it's hard to stress this so much because it's a feeling. My review may sound negative, but THIS is why it's so fun. The combat in Destiny is obviously its own, despite its similarities to Halo's. There are familiar enemies from Bungie's past games, but it's also extremely rewarding to nail head shots, take down massive enemies, and strategize about how to take out a room of enemies. If it wasn't so fun, or if the shooting didn't feel so snappy, the game would have been a tiresome trek since the game's missions repeat over and over again. Repetition is the name of the game. Ride on your Sparrow to an objective. Deploy your Ghost. Defeat waves of enemies. Take on a mini-boss. Take on the main boss. That's it. There are absolutely zero set piece moments, and I was left struggling to remember an especially exciting story mission.

Luckily, players are given special Strike missions that keep things interesting. After level 20, Destiny becomes and entirely new experience. The challenges are a high-octane blast and clearly the best part of the game. With new missions promised for quite some time, console gamers are given the MMO experience that PC players have had for years - and that's a good thing. With the promise - but not always delivery - of legendary loot, these missions are Destiny's end game that will keep players for months. With special shopkeepers that only come on the weekends, there are tons of reasons to keep coming back. There's clearly a lot borrowed from Diablo and World of Warcraft, but it ultimately creates a very compelling experience.

While the Strike missions are varied and often enrapturing, the same can't be said for Destiny's weapons or classes. There are only minor differences between the Hunter, Warlock, and Titan, all of whom bear the same, generic weapons. Classes may have different jumps (the Warlock's glide is especially useless), but they all have a set of grenades, ultimates, and stat-boosts. Sure, the Hunter is faster and the Titan has more armor, but there's very little mastery required for each class. Character progression is ultimately tied to loot since the "skill tree" only has a very variants to choose from. It's all very familiar and leaves you wanting more sci-fi in your sci-fi, but the game is easy to pick up and play. Hopefully Bungie will introduce more exciting ways to take out your enemies in future updates. The raid is a GREAT first step and the Queen's missions spice things up even more.

The Crucible is a bare bones PvP game type that is fun, but poorly balanced with matchmaking that makes it incredibly hard to enjoy. Level 5 players are playing against level 25's, and with abilities from the main game carrying over, the Crucible is not a welcoming place. On top of that, there are very few game modes, no variants, and, like Destiny' story, feels intentionally incomplete. I didn't spend much time in the Crucible and don't see a reason to as someone who doesn't often play competitive PvP.

Oh, and if you play a Warlock, you don't have a double jump. The game HATES you for this until you upgrade your abilities.

Social
Destiny is the most isolationist MMO I've ever played - which is a shame because it's best played with friends. The Tower, where Guardians go to mingle and buy better gear, feels devoid of life. Though all maps are multiplayer, you won't find too many other players out in the world with you. There are only four ways to emote, and no way to say, "Hey! Come with me on a strike!" There's no proximity voice chat - but I'm really not sure gamers deserve that given the number of awful things they're very comfortable spewing into their microphone. Bungie, very obviously, wants you to play with your actual friends. This creates a better user-experience - unless none of your friends are online. Once you do start playing with friends though, it's incredibly fun and strategic to work together in fire teams, despite the decision to limit them to three instead of four players.

Presentation
Destiny is beautiful, but generic. The textures look great on the PS4, but items are reused so often that I had a hard time differentiating areas. Indoor areas look like every other indoor area. Every planet has a dilapidated city. Every area is laid out as arenas with narrow passage ways connecting them. Despite the repetition, the areas are beautiful, if not lacking in character. Sci-fi has been done so much better so many other times, but there's no denying that Destiny looks good. The sky boxes don't always work (especially with a ship superimposed on top of it), but when they do they really wow. Dynamic day and night cycles always look amazing and the lighting always looks dramatic and natural. Unfortunately, not everything always does. Especially noticeable was that character's faces don't animate unless they're a robot, with your character's helmet on in all cut scenes. This makes it hard to identify with your avatar. Character design is often good, though two certain characters you meet look like emo rock stars. All in all though, the presentation sometimes wows, but obvious considerations were made for last gen consoles, making this game look like it could have existed years ago.

Overall
Destiny is very lucky to be very fun and be focused on ongoing content because so many other parts of it fall so flat. Despite the completely lackluster story, the co-op, constant new content, and loot keeps me coming back time and time again. The game is simply very fun when these parts align. 8/10

OH! And if you want to play with me, send me a friend request! I'm CartaGEE on PS4.

What the Apple Watch should have been.

If Apple released this instead of a iPod Nano with a wrist band, it could have made the Moto360 look like an ugly, industrial behemoth. But it didn't. THIS is what the #AppleWatch  should have been.

Thinking on it more, Apple really missed with the Apple Watch.

Apple Watch looks stuck in the past while other manufacturers give us a glimmer of what wearables can be in the future. These are first generation devices, and they're not expected to be perfect, but Apple released something that looks remarkably like the most boring of wearables already available from Samsung and LG. They did NOT create a new product category. On top of that, with no mention of battery life, screen resolution, or internals, I'm not sure what's setting this watch apart other than its astronomical price tag of $350 and its iPhone compatibility. Unless, of course, you want to sext by sharing your heart rate.

The Motorola Moto360 may not play well with Android Wear's square menus right now, but when I look at first generation devices, I look for a window into what a product CAN be. The Moto360 does that in spades, whereas the Apple Watch reminds me, a little too much, of the Nano wristwatch. Siri hasn't been delivering lately on its promises as Google Now excels, and those features are, essentially, the backbone of a wearable for at-a-glance notifications. Apple didn't talk a lot about the specs inside the watch, but it doesn't look like the step forward Apple is historically known for (although, those straps were very nice). That excitement was quenched by Motorola. Who wants to fiddle with an analog nub when there's a touchscreen right there?

As for more integration, Google has been going full steam ahead on Android Wear and they'll have the first mover advantage of knowing what their consumers want by having products out in the market for almost a year before the Apple Watch comes out. Again, as with most first-gen devices, I'm not too worried about that sort of stuff. I know it's coming - and fast!

Sidebar: that smiley face Apple displayed.... oh god. Is it 2002? Haha. So bad!

Anyways, that's where I'm coming with all of this and why I see the Moto360 as a much more promising piece of hardware and vision of what a smart watch can be. I mean, just look below. Which one do you think looks most 'Apple'? Which one makes you go, "THAT'S what a wearable should look like!"?___

Can you tell which one is Apple and which one is Android? The times have changed kiddos. Apple is, officially, no longer the greatest tech designer. I'll opt out of the Apple WATCH - Nano Wrist Edition.

Getting LBF back on track.

I’m not above admitting when I bite off more than I can chew, and that’s exactly what I did with +The LittleBigFund.

It’s been a few months since we featured new nonprofits and our communication has gone dark. This is entirely and completely my fault, but I'm excited about using what I learned to start fresh. Without going too deep into why LittleBigFund went dark, my professional career unexpectedly went to a new level, I retreated after burning out, and I lost a little bit of my passion in the project after I gave away a little too much responsibility in managing LBF’s day-to-day. I find solace, however, in knowing that doing anything is better than doing nothing.

I broke my promises to my community and myself.
This one kills me the most and the reason I, admittedly, avoided getting LBF back on track sooner. As a professional Community Manager, letting my community down is the literal worst thing I can do. LittleBigFund promised to actively communicate, be transparent, and help nonprofits every month. We learned our lesson here.

‘Draw the rest of the fucking owl.’
There's an image out there with two steps to drawing an owl. Step one is two circle. Step two is "draw the rest of the fucking owl." Starting The LittleBigFund and getting it off the ground was like drawing the circles. I knew how to do it and it worked. After that I got a little lost and it got incredibly daunting. ‘Drawing the rest of the fucking owl’ takes a lot of consistent effort. I frequently sat down to ‘draw’ and didn’t see an end in sight. So I got up instead of scribbling something down. It got worse with time as ownership and tasks piled up.

So what now? How do we make sure this doesn’t happen again?

Failure is an unacceptable outcome. Just do it.
Dropping the ball on something I care very deeply about is a tough lesson to learn. At the recent age of 24, I have a lot of passions, projects, and adventuring to do - but I’m also responsible for all of my actions. As a terribly consistent procrastinator, I’ve thought about a few ways I can avoid getting under water again. They include content scheduling, a regular date and time to work, a scheduling calendar, and taking back more day-to-day decisions so I don’t have to wait for board approval. Additionally, I’m more than happy to bring someone along with me to help and am keeping options open.

Some initiatives, like a Google+ Community, were a distraction. It’s time to focus on The LittleBigFund’s storytelling and fundraising core above all else.

Nothing wasted.
All donation received over the past few months will be evenly distributed across the next  three cycles. All operating expenses except for hosting will go to deserving nonprofits. Your donations are safe, sound, and ready to help out.

Longer cycles
Three nonprofits a month were too much. Instead, we will be moving to three nonprofits every two months, for a total of six cycles a year. Subscriptions will still be monthly, and this will give us more time to raise more for fantastic causes.

Rebuilding trust.
Finally, I’d like to sincerely apologize to The LittleBigFund’s supporters, believers, donors, board, team, and lurkers. This nonprofit project has so much promise left in it and you’ve all helped get it this far. It’s time for it grow up and for me to give you all a reason to believe in it again. Momentum was lost, but it can be earned back by doing exactly what The LittleBigFund should have been doing. I’m more ready than ever (and humbled) to do it again.

The LittleBigFund will feature three new nonprofits this month.

Thanks for your continued support.___

There have always been people with amazing opinions. Unfortunately, those people couldn't always get their opinions out to a wide audience. With the internet though, they can. The internet has always been a place of discovery for people to find like-minded individuals. When all of the 'others' come together you find out you aren't as isolated as you once thought you were. Starting with forums, people slowly figured out that they weren't so alone with their opinions, problems, joys, and preferences. As access to the internet expanded, there's seemingly an opinion to everything that someone will relate to. Everyone has a voice.

It doesn't take long to see how important our individual voices are. I'm sure you can think of many instances where a certain threshold of comments online lead to real, permanent change. All of a sudden, our voices decide what the press talks about, and not the other way around. That's incredibly powerful and it comes with some new responsibility. We're liable for what we say, our facts have to be correct, and when we speak we have to be ready to be a part of a conversation. We understand that we will be challenged or backed up with every claim we make. By being exposed to so many opinions so rapidly, we come to understand that every issue is less black and white than we originally thought.

With even CEO's participating in AMA's, I'm so thrilled that we've entered into an era where not only does everyone have the ability to voice their opinions, but that they're expected to. Participation in society makes it better and the collective problem solving we do every day is magical. Think about it the next time you post a status.

Resident Evil did the same, and then the once-promising Dead Space abandoned its roots as well. I pretty much gave up on AAA survival horror games, relinquishing anything scary to indie developers.

Imagine. How. STOKED I was during Gamescom when a new Silent Hill game was announced. Initially skeptical, any worries I had were gone the moment I head that the game was being headed up by Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear) and Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, etc). Silent Hill would return to its narrative roots! It was hope that the thought put into Silent Hill 2's enemies would return. On top of that, Kojima doesn't give audiences what they want. He doesn't care about tradition and he's exactly what the series needs to adapt to modern game mechanics. To help support this, 'PT' was released last night as a 'Playable Teaser' for Silent Hills (the new game) and is one of the best pieces of video game marketing I have EVER seen.

Here are some of my reactions:
- PT uses the Fox Engine and the graphic fidelity is insane. The image below is NOT a photograph.
- The "demo" lasts about 1 to 2 hours and that's more than enough.
- It's positively terrifying. PT is scarier and gives a better sense of place than most recent horror games. There's an awesome amount of detail within the house.
- Fucked up 'creatures' make a return in a really uncomfortable way.
- Hideo Kojima isn't afraid to do grisly things to characters. This was obvious in Ground Zeroes and now in PT. If fetuses are what they tackle in the TEASER, I can't wait to see more fucked up shit.
- Starting a Silent Hill teaser in first person is ballsy and fucks with expectations. Silent Hill is a third person game through and through, and I think that the full game will indeed be third person (as indicated from the final cutscene). They wouldn't pay an actor as famous as Norman Reedus to not show him, especially with all that fancy mo-cap.
- Ghosts? I wasn't too thrilled about ghosts. Silent Hill isn't a ghost game, but I'll roll with it for now.
- PT frustrates the player. A lot of it is random, demands patiences, and leaves the player feels lost, angry, annoyed, and anxious - EXACTLY what a game like this should do.
- I'm not sure how this will stack up against The Evil Within which is coming out later this year, but my money is on Silent Hills.
- Atmosphere was present absolutely everywhere. Your surroundings would change as you kept going through the looping door and you never knew what to expect. PT surprised me many, many times.
- The narrative style of Silent Hill is making an obvious return. Listening to the radio, reading the walls, looking at photographs, etc. "Look behind you. I said, look behind you." AH!
- Jump scares were fine. I've read some people complain about them, but meh.
- Why Silent Hills with an 'S'? The looping doors and narration seem to indicate alternate realities (something familiar to Silent Hill), but given The Order's symbol being the loading icon, I think Silent Hill has expanded past the 'real' Silent Hill. The game will surely be about a man's descent into madness, and messing with perception, reality, and dimensions are just as fitting as they once were.

So. Am I stoked? Yes. Is this the greatest thing that could have happened? Probably.___

Last night I made the incredibly rash decision to buy last minute tickets to Beyonce and Jay-Z's On the Run tour. I regret nothing. Say what you will about Beyonce (and the only thing that's reasonable to say is that she is perfect and awe-inspiring and amazing), but she is undoubtedly an incredibly singer. She hit every single note, danced her ass off, and had incredibly stage presence. She knew EXACTLY what to do to get the crowd riled up.

The stage was the main stage from Coachella and the audio quality was super crisp. Unfortunately, there was serious reverb off the back of AT&T park especially when Jay-Z was performing. I imagine that they tilted the speakers down due to noise complaints after the first night.

Technically, the show was incredible. The video was crystal clear. The lights were massive. There were trap doors and stripper poles and props and ahhhhh! Video bits played between songs and told the story of Beyonce and Jay-Z on the run as gangsters. Cheesy? Sure. But it was a blast. The screens would move around constantly as well, always giving people something to look at.

The set list rocked, but I was a little sad XO and End of Time weren't performed. Countdown had it's usual moment as a transition piece and Ring the Alarm was a huge highlight.

They had chemistry during the show, but at one point Jay held Beyonce from behind and it did NOT look appreciated. They were more lovey dovey at the end, but there some moments of tension - and I don't think I'm projecting.

Jay-Z was (mostly) good for bathroom breaks.___

Fortress of Solitude.

My boyfriend and I have a saying: "I'm going to Fortress of Solitude tonight." What it means is, "I'd like to be alone tonight." It's an understood necessity that we need time to recollect our thoughts, recharge, and focus on our passions for a little while. I have a set reserve of emotional energy that I can spend. I spend it differently every day but it eventually runs out. As my roots grow deeper and deeper into my work, relationship, and city, I spend more and more of it. I'm highly involved at my company. Being in San Francisco longer means more friends to meet up with. As someone who's been single over three years until recently, I'm relearning a lot about myself in my new relationship. It's... a lot to spend my emotional energy on but I love every second of it.

A few months ago, I burned myself out. Work was insane, my nonprofit became too much to handle, and my personal life was nonstop mayhem (in the greatest way possible). It didn't help that I would use the hours of midnight and 2am to relax and unwind. This can only last so long. Soon, I was too tired to catch up with what I needed to do. For the first time in my life, I let emails stack up, notifications go unread, and was ignoring text messages from even my best friends. I'm not sure whether to blame technology and how easy it made finding me or myself taking on more than I can chew, but the bottom line was that I needed to cut back.

The fear of missing out is real, especially these days, but the more I communicated that I was going to be alone, the happier I was doing things that were normally enjoyable. Alone time has become a necessity in my elder year of 24, and it makes life mean more. Not every moment needs to be lived 'in the moment' and I find myself coming out of my Fortress of Solitude with a revitalized understanding of what's important to me. Don't be afraid of being alone for a bit - even if you're as extroverted as I am.

My weekend.

My boyfriend Shane and I (along with my good friend James and his boyfriend) retreated into the wilderness this weekend to camp, hike, cliff jump, eat, and pretend to be mountain goats. We looked on +Google Earth for some small lakes to the northwest of Tahoe and decided that Downey lake would be the greatest to go to. We were right.

It was glorious and I loved every second of it. Actually, I'm ready to go back. Right. Now.

Man. The amount of time we spend defending our 'right' to prove we're the biggest asshole on the internet is astonishing. "No. I won't think about whether or not being a troll hurts my or the internet's ability to be a persuasive, legitimate, and respectable force in the world because being a troll is funny. I like funny."

Sigh... People need to understand that, in order for their voice to be taken seriously, that they need to not harass the people they want to listen to them. Thinking being a dick for the sake of being a dick is unnecessary shouldn't be a controversial thought.

There are better ways to make a point.

Sigh... People need to understand that, in order for their voice to be taken seriously, that they need to not harass the people they want to listen to them. Thinking being a dick for the sake of being a dick is unnecessary shouldn't be a controversial thought.

There are better ways to make a point.___

The internet has grown up, deciding the fate of legislation, spreading open and free information, and becoming the largest, most important community building platform the human race has ever had. As the net grows up, it's time for its users to as well.

In general, I'm against anonymity on the internet. People's stories and history help them make relevant, meaningful points and contributions. We shouldn't be afraid of them. Alas, many are and anonymity can be dangerously enabling. People will do things they would never do when their avatars are held responsible instead of themselves. Sometimes their actions are minor like posting pornography, other times it's bullying serious enough to drive people to suicide. It's always uncalled for. People want to live out fantasies or find purpose by creating conflict, and that's much easier with an avatar. An avatar is a vehicle for abusive behavior. There are, of course, legitimate reasons for remaining anonymous, especially when there are serious personal consequences (ie. political reasons, soul searching, etc), but anonymity is, unfortunately, most closely related to people doing things they wouldn't normally do.

The problem with trolling is that it undercuts the internet's legitimacy as platform can safely participate in to enact change in their communities. Trolls are Judas's to their fellow internet users, damaging honest and helpful perspectives from other anonymous users. Causing mayhem may be malicious fun, but it's an unhelpful cycle. People troll, they lose legitimacy, they aren't taken seriously when making a real point, they get mad and troll more, they try to make a serious point again - rinse and repeat. I see this cycle far too often as a Community Manger and it's emotional whip lash. Anonymous communities are especially hot and cold, biting the hand that feeds them and then begging to have their concerns addressed. They become increasingly frustrated the more they're ignored after trolling or over reacting, failing to see that their attitude is what makes them hard to trust.

I'm not saying that we can't mess with each other or have a little fun, but I think we need to take a critical look at the culture of trolling and its actual usefulness. Done by men and women of all ages, it's a childish endeavor that makes internet users hard to respect and earn the reputation of a bad consumer. It's time to stop being aroused by shit-causing and start using the internet to its fullest potential. The internet is too mature to be stifled by the emotional high of false importance and inflation of 'self'.

So go forth internet! Be anonymous when you need to, but challenge yourself to be thoughtful, empathetic, personal, and reasonable. The net is a great step forward for all these things, and it's time to stop abusing it.___

Pride: How I used to hate it and I came to love it.

Another Pride weekend has come and gone, and I can understand how the whole Pride thing could put a few people off. It's... a lot to handle. Before moving to San Francisco, my closest affiliations to any sort of LGBT Pride came from my role on my college campus as Vice President of the Inter-Fraternity Council. It wasn't until this whole Google+ thing blew up that I was, frankly, pressured into being a thought leader in the LGBT space and embodying Pride. Similar to my experiences being a gay male in charge of a horde of alpha males on my college campus, I felt a bit like a black sheep. So I started asking myself why. What was it about Pride that I didn't connect with?

I thought about it from sorts of different angles: Was it shame? No, definitely not. Why would my dad not like this? It's shocking, but I... more »

What was it about Pride that I didn't connect with?

I thought about it from sorts of different angles: Was it shame? No, definitely not. Why would my dad not like this? It's shocking, but I don't mind that. Do I think this endeavor is worthwhile? Yes, absolutely. After some time, I realized that it was the pressure. Having preserved my identity over the years from the easy out of 'Hey girl's or the free-pass assimilation of super quirky art queer or devolving into a hyper critical sassy-pants who wins votes through mean-spirited laughs in favor of my own style of gayness, I hated being told what to do or how to act. It's something people of any cultural group go through as they develop, and I definitely did. Pride felt like it was one level, one volume, one intensity. It felt shallow to me because of that and, even though I'd enjoy dancing from time to time, there was no reprieve from its loudness.

That can be a lot for people to handle, especially if they're just coming to grips with their own identity like I was.

To me, The New Pride is all about support. That parade, those dancers, those naked old guys, the girls holding hands, the leather - all of that expression isn't saying, "Be like us!" Rather, it's saying, "We are this way. We are showing you that you can be any way that you want to be." Walking through the crowds this year, I didn't feel pressured. Instead, I looked around, quietly, and appreciated everyone for who they were. Through all the noise and through all the bass and through all the color, that's the real message of Pride.

This nearly unanimously hated proposal threatens to forever misrepresent the founding principles of the internet.  I IMPLORE you to take this time to leave your comment at the link below.

My comment is as follows:

"FCC,

I'm truly troubled by your persistence to end Net Neutrality, and instead create a system where the bidder with the most resources receives preferential treatment from internet service providers. Should the proposal 'Protecting and Promoting the Open Internet' be implemented, I foresee a future where smaller brands are unfairly damaged simply because they didn't have the cash to pay their ISP for ideal speeds. The average consumer won't understand why some sites are faster than others and will, instead, prefer certain sources over others not because of their content, but because of their willingness to dish out to Comcast. It's a situation that's bad for the consumer, bad for internet service providers, and bad for brands.

The internet was founded on the principle of free and open information for everyone. It gave everyone a voice, and every voice should reach me the same way. The FCC continues to plead with us saying that it is not creating a 'Fast Lane' and that every site will reach me at my promised speeds from my ISP, but faster is faster. The tubes that bring me the internet are no different than the power lines that provide power to my house or the water pipes underneath my feet. The internet has become a requirement for modern living and the FCC should make every effort possible to preserve and improve its ease of access. Your proposal does the exact opposite and, despite some creative language that may make 14-28 look appealing, the FCC has received more comments on this than anything else in its history. Everyone's caught on.

I implore you to seriously consider every comment you've received on your initiative and find a different solution. Should the FCC continue moving forward on 14-28, it will only hurt its perception as a woefully out of touch government agency that is not acting in the best interest of the American people. Please. Don't make me completely lose faith in the FCC's ability to protect my right to access information, promote forward-thinking innovations, and be a world leader in technology. There's still time to make this right by doing the most American thing possible - listening to the people you serve.

Emphatically,
Carter Gibson"

Yesterday, my 16-year-old pup Ernie died. When I went home for Christmas last year I said goodbye to him. He was super old and it was time to go, but my mom had to make the call to put him down. I can't imagine how hard that must be, but she did it in the best way possible.

Ernie, who had been having seizures for a few months, was clearly at the end of the line. My mom had a hospice pet lady come over so he didn't have to go to vet and they fed him chicken and treats all morning. Then Ernie was given half of the sedative so he wouldn't be disoriented. He got sleepy, walked over to my mom, laid down, put his head in her lap and got an ear rub. Then he went to sleep. When the woman brought in a sheet to take Ernie away, my mom protested, saying he should go out in something from home. So he was wrapped in a towel and carried out in his bed. I'm absolutely devastated to lose the dog I grew up with, but I'm so happy he could go out the way he did. He was a truly fantastic, loving pup. Here's a picture of him in a dog Snuggie on top on my mom who was also wearing a Snuggie.___

It's Pride, and after a fantastic night at the Robyn and Royksopp concert, I'm ready to talk about why this whole Pride thing exists at all. Not everyone celebrates Pride the same way. Hell, some people are completely put off by the festivities, but that's okay. There's more than one way to celebrate and, no matter what, it's important to remember that it's all about support.

It's not my job to do PR, but rather to increase transparency and help our players understand the decisions we make - not all of which we'll backtrack on. We have to balance qualitative data with quantitative data and sometimes find new, creative solutions when quantitative data wins out over feelings.

My goal is to foster a constructive environment that helps me better understand how to tweak features that are important to the team's vision, but also informed by players' input. That can be especially hard with legacy players in Free to Play titles that are quickly iterated on, but it's also a huge opportunity to capture that passion by creating special groups. As for the anonymity-driven hate speech? It's easy to not to listen to feedback from people who insult us no matter how much that player may care. I'll always try once to engage, but if they don't want to listen then they don't deserve to impact the title.

It's a truly great job that certainly requires a tough skin, consistent availability that needs to be delicately balanced, and unorthodox methods, but man. It's always exciting and usually rewarding.___

My admiration for other men felt so natural that I never even considered that I was being progressive. I knew to keep my #pride  quiet though. I knew that, were I to out myself, I wouldn't belong to the communities I was already a part of. I knew that it wasn't the right time and that I had to wait for everyone else to recognize the diversity that's always been there, just hidden. By the time I came out at 15, I realized that waiting wasn't going to do any good. I had to be a part of the change I needed to fully live my life. I had to help create the community I wanted to be a part of.

After many a story, meeting, greeting, speech, and campaign, I've watched so many others just like me help others see the beauty in relationships of all kinds. I've seen arguments against love that used to be the status quo dismissed on the basis of absurdity. I've seen massive amounts of courage from my community, but also from those outside my community who have opened their mind to encourage a more accepting, loving world. It's not easy to force yourself to see new perspectives or challenge your world view, but it's the more important part of long-lasting change.

The New Community accepts each other no matter who (or what) we love. It acknowledges that there's no one right way to appreciate life. We're all truly lucky to be alive while these incredible communities are being formed and it's up to us to make sure they continue to grow.

For about a year I've been taking screenshots of Snapchats that strangers send me. Seriously. It's more than you'd think and they're all very interesting.

My question to you is: Should I start a Tumblr featuring them? I'm leaning yes.

An example is below. I have NO idea who that person is.

We can't sweep those opinions under the rug and pretend that a majority in favor of marriage equality is enough.

Standing up for marriage equality to everyone - consistently and for the foreseeable future - is the key to creating a safe nation for all. But man. I wish we were past that already.

How I adopted #TheNew  Identity

At what point will our online personas define who we are in "real" life? Not too long ago, our online profiles were a supplement to our actual selves. Now those same profiles have begun to dictate our real life personalities. Though not always aware of them, the pressures and expectations of digital representations threaten to overwhelm our ability to be dynamic in real life. The statements we make online are so conscious and concrete that they can create an inflated residual self image, not representative of who we are or how complex we are.

Have you ever tried to be someone you're not? When I started this whole internet thing, I was so frustrated by separate networks for different parts of me. Facebook was for friends, LinkedIn was where I was a profession, Tumblr was where you had to be entertaining, etc. It never... more »

Have you ever tried to be someone you're not? When I started this whole internet thing, I was so frustrated by separate networks for different parts of me. Facebook was for friends, LinkedIn was where I was a profession, Tumblr was where you had to be entertaining, etc. It never felt right to me. Ever. In fact, I could draw very direct correlations to the people I was out as gay to and the people I wasn't. I acted differently around both sets of people and it was exhausting. I got fed up with that pretty quickly. Very quickly. Google+ was my breath of fresh air. My own personal blog where I would reveal my insecurities, accomplishments, and experiences. Nothing would be too personal to share. It was as much a test as it was a liberation.

I don't think I'm the only one who's suffered from Multiple Internet Personality Exhaustion. We've all felt the pressure of knowing we're talking to a thousand when we're talking to one person. I like to live my life knowing that what I say to one person is what I would say to anyone. It's challenging for sure, but I promise you'll feel better if you do it too.

Around 5pm, work clothes are exchanged for black shirts, black shorts, and bright flashes of neon socks, undershirts, and headbands. Slowly, the number of neon-clad team members multiply on every floor. While walking through the halls, The KIXBALLERS are cheered on as they pack up to leave. Gathering in the lobby and confusing the other building tenants with their game faces (read: smiles and enthusiasm), the team makes the trek into SoMa where their challengers await. Intimidation is the name of the game of the game as The KIXBALLERS enter the field together, as a team. After a brief warm up (which includes their signature handstands), it’s time to slay.

Many companies have regular team outings or sport teams, but KIXBALL at KIXEYE is a byproduct of a culture that encourages fun. KIXEYE understands the value of blowing off steam and celebrating accomplishments. The KIXBALLERS aren’t just a clique of office friends who decided to do something after work together. They’re a ragtag team from nearly every department who want to represent KIXEYE in their free time. Their impossible-to-ignore neon in the halls every Tuesday is one small part of what makes their coworkers excited to be in the office. KIXEYE makes videogames. KIXEYE creates fun. It’s okay to have some too.

I'm so very lucky to work where I do. You can read the full blog post here: http://bit.ly/KIXBALL___

How come indie game makers seem to be the only ones in the industry who actually care about their communities? Supergiant replied to me within a minute of me tweeting praise about them. How come indie game makers seem to be the only ones in the industry who actually care about their communities? Supergiant replied to me within a minute of me tweeting praise about them. Alone Time

When's the last time you were truly by yourself and on your own? When's the last time you took an adventure without Instagramming? Roommates know who you go out with. The internet knows where you're eating. Friends know what you're thinking or feeling. We're obsessed with immediately sharing nearly everything we do that hardly anything anymore is actually done alone. Even if you're not the one sharing, someone will inevitably tag you. Even if you're off doing your own thing, someone could easily say, "Man, that person is here doing this," without ever having to ask you. As dedicated I am to being an open book, I've wondered how present I really am.

Even if you're off doing your own thing, someone could easily say, "Man, that person is here doing this," without ever having to ask you. As dedicated I am to being an open book, I've wondered how present I really am.

At Coachella last month, I was furious with the number of people taking shitty cell phone footage of my favorite bands. "For....what?" I asked myself. Then I remembered how many times I had stopped to Instagram. Or how many tweets I sent. Or how many photos I had taken (none of which turned out of course). I saw a part of myself in my fellow concert-goers that made me realize how little of what I do is actually for me. I put my cell phone down for the entire third day of the festival.

We may not ever again be able to control what's posted about us, who tags us, or who knows where we are / what we do, but we are in control of the intent of our actions. I'm starting to see a greater value in alone time. Whether it's being able to more accurately share select details with hindsight or live presently, I think we, collectively, need a slight course correction on our experience / share balance. My pledge to myself is that I start having more alone time. I'm not going to look at my phone (as much). I don't need to check in (as much). It doesn't matter. What matters most is what I'm experiencing, not what I'm sharing. Besides, the better I experience things, the better I can share them. Reflection rules, but immediacy can be more of a distractor than anything else.

Be Obsessed with Opportunities, Not Likes

I find it a little insane how easily it is to find something to do if you look. There are thousands (millions?) of websites, apps, and services dedicated to helping you do....well, whatever you want to. From vacations to dates to shopping to professional meet ups to part-time gigs to jobs, all you really need is an internet connection.

For example, one day I found myself a little underwater financially. Should I eat cheap? Should I not go out? Was there anything I didn't care about that I could sell? Then I remembered that I didn't need to do any of that. I had a car. I had a phone. Within a few days I was driving Lyft. A week later my issue was gone, I could drive whenever I wanted, and there was a safety net in case I ever needed some extra quick cash should I ever find myself in a bind again. Talk about peace of mind.more »

A week later my issue was gone, I could drive whenever I wanted, and there was a safety net in case I ever needed some extra quick cash should I ever find myself in a bind again. Talk about peace of mind.

Make no mistake, that particular circumstance comes from a place of privilege. Not everyone has a car (or a phone), but my experience was eye opening. I had always viewed the internet as a vast library with all the information in the world available for free. Following my Lyft adventure, I began thinking about things a little differently. Every online interaction we have is an opportunity to not just learn something new, but to meet up, make a new connection, or venture out somewhere we hadn't heard of. Opportunities are just as, if not more, plentiful than the information we Google.

It's fantastically overwhelming.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to think of the internet as a web of interconnected chances to do something awesome as well as a massive database. Maybe it's because I was so obsessed with sharing instead of doing. Maybe it's because I thought every opportunity had to be a Groupon or a LinkedIn recommendation. Realizing how much of the great things in my life came from jumping on an online opportunity - boyfriends, dinners, parties, etc - makes me all the more eager to keep using my browser as a giant concierge instead of as an encyclopedia.

The controversial Glacier Skywalk

Located in the Canadian Rockies, the Glacier Skywalk is a glass-floored lookout point over 900ft above the ground. Whether you think it's an eye sore or technical marvel, it's here to stay. I haven't made up my mind, but man if it isn't impressive.

You guys know that super talented photographer +Mathew Hanley? Yeah, he's going to Thailand to take incredibly bomb photos and you should absolutely help him out because he rules. :D

I'm going to Thailand

Some of you may already know but I'm planning a trip to Thailand. However funds are going to be a little tight. I'd really appreciate it if you could share my +Indiegogo  campaign.

You can "pre-order" prints from the trip. Other "perks" are available at various prices. It's a flexible campaign so even if the goal isn't reach the money still comes to me and you still get what you purchased. A massive thanks to anybody who shares or buys anything from the campaign. Your expectations are exhausting.

A few weeks ago I did an AMA here. It was my latest effort at trying to reengage with Google+, a platform that I still believe to be incredibly valuable, powerful, and special. Dealing with my own life in more ways than one - from career decisions to relationships to everything in between - I hadn't been as active on the platform that catapulted me from the East Coast to the Best Coast as I felt I should have been. During that AMA, I realized exactly what it was that was keeping me away from Google+ in the first place. It was the expectations that strangers put on me that I've never agreed to.

I've blogged about those expectations before, but what's different now is that there isn't as much as a need for me to keep fighting on. I have a job. I speak at conferences. I'm tied into a close community of amazing people. My... more »

My life is stable and going really well. I don't need to fight with people on the internet to make sure that I secure my financial and social security. Maybe that's why when I shared my biggest fear (being complacent) and someone replied with, "No. That's not your biggest fear. It's probably this instead," I didn't feel any need to come back to Google+ anytime soon.

That may sound terribly blunt, but I think it's true. I don't necessarily think it's right, but I do think that my followers got the better of me. Priorities shifted. The LittleBigFund (which I'm still trying to perfect) took up a good portion of the energy I have to blog and working with gamers for a living is....sometimes intense. At the end of the day, I stopped seeing personal value in being the Google+ Personality that everyone expected me to be. It had always been an uphill battle against people who tried to define me without my consent (or input), but, over the past several months, I simply had to put my energy elsewhere.

In my defense, I think I handled the transition from online nobody to 1million+ followers pretty smoothly. Sure, there were occasional tears as I figured out how awful trolls could be, but I never felt used by Google or anything like that - and I still don't. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity the likes of +Natalie Villalobos, +Jenna Montali, and +Vic Gundotra gave me. It was up to me to participate. It was up to me to leave. I forged my own path with the amazingness of +Daria Musk, +Amanda Blain, +Ryan Crowe, +Alida Brandenburg, and +Ryan Van Sickle (and so many more). But once I moved out to San Francisco, got a dream job in my dream industry, and began to make new friends, I felt that my path had brought me to my destination.

And then I didn't know how to use Google+ anymore.

I was removed from the Suggested User List. The hype around my baby, The LittleBigFund, had died down. I reached the end of a beautiful trail and I didn't know where to go.

In retrospect, I'm glad that someone told me, straight up, that my biggest fear wasn't my biggest fear. After thinking on that comment for a few weeks, I felt like I could see a new path. It was just as shrouded in fog as the path I first journeyed on in Google+'s infancy, but it was a path. That path started with the realization that I need to find a way to dig myself out of a massive pile of expectations and bullshit. And trust me....people project a good amount of bullshit on you.

I'm not sure if I'm going to come prancing out of my cave of solitude immediately. But I do know is that I miss interacting with those of you I've spent time forming true relationships with and I miss how engaged I was in the LGBT community's quest for equality. Google+ was the greatest thing that's ever happened to me (and I really don't think I'm embellishing), and it kills me that I let it get the better of me when I was emotionally drained.

So how do I use it going forward? Hopefully in the personal, honest, transparent, therapeutic way I miss using it. One thing's for certain though - I'm going to do it on my own terms.___

Escape Velocity at Coachella

Coachella is just as much as a blast as I expected. This astronaut moves around the grounds exploring the land. At night, his sun shield comes up and his past travels are played in his helmet for everyone else to witness.

It looks like people are finally understanding the value of G+
In response to this +Mashable article: http://on.mash.to/1hs7SDJ

What Google understands better than any social network is targeted marketing, data, and search. That might sounds scary or foreign (or evil) to the average user, but really it comes down to community. Google+ was always about communities coming together thanks to the help of Google search. Google helped by using what it knew about you to help match you to people it thought you would find interesting. Now, when Google+ first launched, it tried to make it all about friends and coworkers, but has since changed its tune to be more about topics than contrived social circles. Google helped by using what it knew about you to help match you to people it thought you would find interesting. Now, when Google+ first launched, it tried to make it all about friends and coworkers, but has since changed its tune to be more about topics than contrived social circles. It's not surprising to me that brands take advantage of thought leaders in topics to post to because Google+ makes who those people are very visible. Look at Communities. Look at Hashtags. Look at Shared Circles.

It's important to remember that Google+ is so much more than "The Stream." People who like the stream will use it. People who don't won't, but they'll still benefit from it. Google Now, personalized search results, and even Youtube comments (yes, that comment section is better, more relevant, and approachable than it used to be). The bottom line is that Google+ does a fantastic job of connecting people to the content they think is interesting even if they're not in the stream. It's a less annoying experience wherein a person is more likely to peer at a company's post because the expectation's been set that it's at least somewhat relevant. On top of all that, look at the tools G+ gives brands! Hangouts. Giant images. Auto-Hashtags. Circles curated by real users, not an algorithm. Communities.

People need to get over the fact that Google didn't conquer Facebook in two years. I know I know. It's Google, and we expect a lot from Google, but the fact of the matter is that Google just keeps making G+ more and more appealing to brands.___

Everyone's lying today, so I'll be honest. Ask me anything!

It's no secret that I haven't been very active on Google+ lately or blogging how I normally do. There's no one reason for that other than the fact that I ran out of emotional energy and needed to recharge. I've truly missed you all and hope that I'm back in the swing of things now.

To help make up for not being around much on this #AprilFools  day, I'm going to let you ask me anything you'd like to. The only things I won't reveal are 1) financial information that you could abuse and 2) information that someone else has trusted me not to share. Other than that, anything goes.

So. Go for it.
