Lauren Weinstein383,653*Hangout On Air: Discussing Congress Without Obscenities* - As of 1 PM PDT, the U.S. Senate leadership has supposedly reached a very short term deal to end the federal government shutdown and temporarily raise the debt ceiling. The fate of this package in the House is still decidedly unclear. Regardless of what Congress does right now, we're going to be in the same mess again likely in a matter of weeks or months. Let's _Discuss Congress Without Obscenities_ this evening. What's _really_ going on?  Is the GOP still even really a _political party_ any more? If not, _what are they?_  And _can we even discuss this without the constant use of invectives?_  Let's at least try. This HOA is currently scheduled for 7:30 PM PDT this evening. It is subject to change or cancellation as events warrant.  Thanks!Hangout On Air: Discussing Congress Without Obscenities2013-10-17 04:30:0012

So the GOP by and large is screaming that they want to fight the marriage equality decision by the Supreme Court (constitutional amendment, service requirement lawsuits, constitutional convention, etc.) In this we see how the GOP is doomed. For if they truly wanted to fight back against the demographic changes that will otherwise be derailing them, they'd be appealing to their younger members who widely support marriage equality, not their older ones who will represent a decreasing support base over time.

Kitty!

"One of the world’s rarest big cat species has received some much-needed good news this month. According to newly published surveys, the population of endangered Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) has experienced a population boom to a modern-day high of 523. That’s a 27 percent increase over the population of 411 cats during the previous survey five years ago.
Asiatic lions—also known as Gir lions because they live only in and around the Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat, India—were hunted to near-extinction in the 19th century. All of today’s Asiatic lions are descended from just 13 cats, which were protected at the last minute in 1907 by an Indian prince. The cats are the only lion subspecies that lives outside of Africa.
Gir lions continue to face multiple threats despite more than a century of protection. Millions of people live in and around the national park, and the lions often end up in conflict with humans and livestock. They also have been known to fall into wells or get electrocuted on bare-wire, high-power fences. Young lions are also wandering farther out of the park to find their own territories. This dispersal puts the cats outside of the sanctuary’s protection, and they increasingly find themselves being hit by passing cars, trucks or trains. During the past year some have even been observed 100 kilometers outside the park in densely populated human neighborhoods".___Kitty!

The author of the influential book The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires co-wrote a paper asserting that Google is engaging in anticompetitive behavior by prominently serving up its own content, like restaurant reviews and doctors office phone numbers, in search results. Wu is an unlikely person to join the antitrust chorus against Google. He’s often been an ally of the company over the years. Before an unsuccessful run for lieutenant governor of New York state last year, Wu worked as an unpaid Google fellow in 2008 and served as a senior advisor to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission in 2011 and 2012, helping draft Internet traffic regulation that Google favors. Wu coined the term “network neutrality,” and a 2008 Businessweek story credited him with partly inspiring Google's open mobile strategy in Android ... Google declined to comment publicly on the paper. But two people familiar with the company’s thinking criticized the paper for assuming that more clicks equates to better search results. For example, users searching for “the best pediatrician in Brooklyn” may be more satisfied by Google’s list of doctors with accompanying phone numbers than with links to other websites that they then have to click on and wait for as each one loads. These people also note that Yelp listings are often prominently displayed on the first page of search results and that Yelp’s business does not appear to have suffered by Google privileging its own material. Yelp’s stock is up nearly threefold since it went public in 2012. Consumers could also turn to competing search engines like Bing, go directly to sites like Yelp or open an app on their smartphone. //___

I have had one -- exactly one -- nudist experience in my life. It was not part of my plan. Many years ago, a female friend dragged me along to an overnight camping sort of public "folk dancing" festival up near Fresno, at a rural venue called Sweet's Mill, which, Google informs me, is still very active. What she neglected to inform me was that it was traditional for part of the time to be a clothing-optional event, which pretty much amounted to essentially 100% nudity among attendees. Surprise! This created the classic social quandary. Did I really want to be the center of attention staying clothed (note, we came in her car, I had no easy exit) or just go with the flow? It was a fairly obvious choice really -- so I stripped and spent the afternoon walking around noting the vast and fascinating scope of the human animal's many shapes and sizes. It was really quite educational. And I also learned how easily a certain extruding and usually covered body part will sunburn. A worthwhile experience to be sure, but not one I've ever had the slightest urge to repeat.___

I often disagree with Chief Justice Roberts, but I most certainly respect him. This is in sharp distinction to Sen. Ted Cruz, who is blasting Roberts personally, calling for Supreme Court justices to withstand public votes, calling for a Constitutional convention to rewrite the Constitution, and just generally demonstrating what a horrible little vomit-inducing cockroach of a man he is -- and I use the term man loosely. How do monsters like that ever get elected to the Senate? Oh yeah ... Texas!
