Lauren Weinstein381,398*Hangout On Air: Discussing Congress Without Obscenities* - As of 1 PM PDT, the U.S. Senate leadership has supposedly reached a very short term deal to end the federal government shutdown and temporarily raise the debt ceiling. The fate of this package in the House is still decidedly unclear. Regardless of what Congress does right now, we're going to be in the same mess again likely in a matter of weeks or months. Let's _Discuss Congress Without Obscenities_ this evening. What's _really_ going on?  Is the GOP still even really a _political party_ any more? If not, _what are they?_  And _can we even discuss this without the constant use of invectives?_  Let's at least try. This HOA is currently scheduled for 7:30 PM PDT this evening. It is subject to change or cancellation as events warrant.  Thanks!Hangout On Air: Discussing Congress Without Obscenities2013-10-17 04:30:0012

Let me be clear. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who despised Scalia's opinions any more than I have. But he was an intelligent, civil human being (unlike various GOP presidential candidates), with a wife, nine children, and many grandchildren. I will not tolerate jokes, sarcasm, hateful comments or other similar expositions on my threads regarding him now. All contrary attempts will be deleted. If you're not a decent enough human being to abide by this -- please go away. So it is written, so it shall be done.

Regarding Scalia. I despised everything he stood for ... but ... he was incredibly intelligent, and he had a wonderful sense of humor. Even when you disagreed with him with every fiber of your being, he was often a delight to listen to. That's quite rare.

The Supreme Court is virtually always a rather secondary issue to most voters during presidential elections. That's much less likely to be the case this time around -- that vacancy will be in the news every day now until such a time as it's filled.

If you really think there are no differences between Democrats and Republicans, keep in mind that Obama will be nominating a replacement on the Supreme Court for the late Antonin Scalia who died last night in his sleep. And recall that the oldest justices remaining on the court are the ones to the left of center.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa. According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. WOW! A seriously crooked uploader using a YouTube Content ID/Copyright fingerprinting evasion technique I haven't seen before! - As you may know, I have a hobby of detecting and exposing YouTube crooks uploading and monetizing videos to which they have no rights. Typically they use rather crude methods that obviously degrade the visible video -- reduced size video insets, aspect ratio changes, disruptive contrast/brightness variations, and so on. But this one is special. The video quality didn't look great but it was watchable. Something seemed wrong with it though. I couldn't put my finger on it at first, but the clue was when I looked at the seek position thumbnails -- they didn't seem to match the video at all, they all appeared to be some sort of rainbow effect. HUH? Then I realized what was happening. It appears that every other frame is a static "rainbow" image with an... more »

HUH? Then I realized what was happening. It appears that every other frame is a static "rainbow" image with an empty white video inset square. But instead of actually placing the payload video within the inset as is the common evasion technique, the crook is using the full-size video frame and using the alternate frames to try fool the YT fingerprinting system -- successfully for the 2.5 months since it was uploaded. Sometimes you can see a flash of these when you start playing the video as well -- and you can see them other times too if you grab the seek pointer just right. Definitely a new one for my collection!___

Without a doubt, while the writing was great, the nearly 100 Fractured Fairy Tales segments from Rocky and His Friends were made by the superb narration of the classic character actor Edward Everett Horton. It's also worth noting that by the time these began production, he was already around 73 years old (he was born in 1886). Bill Scott told me that Horton was such a pro that he rarely needed more than one take to lay down a full track. Amazing. This clip is from 1960.

Pack of Lions

You have one cat, it's like having a mobile houseplant. Two cats, they stake out opposite ends of the house and you see them once or twice a day at mealtimes. But when you get to three, it seems to change the game -- suddenly, it's like you're living with a pack of lions. They compete, they cooperate, they copycat each other, alliances are formed and dissolve as they egg each other on to newfound heights of countertop teefing and destruction. And every so often, they gather to look at you, unsmiling, across ten million years of evolutionary determinism: 'Give us the snacks, or be the snacks.'

Buttons

A special service of CircleCount.com is the following button.

The button shows the number of followers you have directly on a small button. You can add this button to your website, like the +1-Button of Google or the Like-Button of Facebook.

You can add this button directly in your website. For more information about the CircleCount Buttons and the description how to add them to another page click here.
