Kyle Beck0So, I know a lot of my friends who have joined +Google+ wonder "What's the point? I have a Facebook." Well that comparison was flawed from the beginning, although many people made it while trying to describe G+. There are similarities, but one of my favorite features in G+ has been the ability to share Circles with others. In fact I'm not sure I would see the point if I hadn't been shared this very circle by +Robert Scoble (IIRC) early on in my G+ membership. It has proven an invaluable source of up-to-the-minute Tech News over the past year and really showed me how G+ is very different from FB.See, when you visit FB the information you receive is solely from your family and real-life acquaintances. This can be great for keeping up with people you don't see regularly, etc., but it is very hard to reach out to new people who share your interests through FB. Not so on G+. You can create and share groups of friends and pages (Circles) to organize your social interests. In effect, this creates dynamic communities where you can choose who you interact with.Anyways, I hope you will consider adding this Circle, packed full of Tech Enthusiasts. If you don't really use G+ or wonder what the point is, that goes double for you!2012-06-30 00:28:364881003CC G+

Robert Scoble1,146,151Here are 500 of my favorite Tech Journalists, bloggers, and pundits. I'm sharing this since I am seeing lots of new people coming over and I'm sure they are looking for some great people to circle here. Unfortunately I can't share everyone that I have in this circle (I have 575 in this circle on my screen, but Google+ only lets me share 500 with you). Lots of interesting tech bloggers and journalists here. Hope you enjoy. This is the circle that starts my morning every day.Speaking of Tech News, I'm off to +VMware. These are people who are thought leaders, reporters, journalists, bloggers in the tech industry. Robert Scoble152,040This is the best circle for Apple tech news tomorrowThis will be the best circle to watch for info on Apple tomorrow (it's of 250 of the best tech journalists/bloggers/thought leaders on Google+). I will be in front of my three big screens pulling in the best data from around the Web. I'll be watching Twitter, Facebook, Google+ all at the same time. Plus, I'll be live on +Shira Lazar's show starting at 10 a.m. tomorrow with live reports.Anyway, if you want to see how the tech press covers this, follow this circle (make sure you put these in a new circle of your own so you can delete them if they get too noisy for you).I'm watching thousands more, too, and will share anything good. You will be flooded tomorrow with Apple news. If you can't handle this, just unfollow for the morning and everything will calm down pretty quickly after noon.Robert Scoble shared a circle with you.2011-10-03 21:26:3925067127124CC G+

Robert Scoble141,470This is another of my circles. This one is of programmers/developers and highly technical folks. I usually call this my "geek" circle. Unfortunately this one usually has 900+ in it, but using this new "share circles" feature I can only share 250. How it picks the 250 no one knows, but anyway this will be a fun starting place. I guess sometime soon I'll split up my circles into batches of 250 and share the whole thing.Hope you enjoy these.Robert Scoble shared a circle with you.2011-09-27 09:59:4925011289124CC G+
Robert Scoble141,470Yikes. I can only share 250 people at one time. So, here's 250 people in my Tech Journalists' circle. This circle has 535 in it, so you aren't even getting half a circle here. All of these are active.Robert Scoble shared a circle with you.2011-09-27 04:31:19250394343CC G+

The State Of Google+

I was on a good run of posting here frequently a while back, and my use just fell off. Sorry, guys :( I'll aim to do better.

I really think this network has value. The value for me has always been that the people I interact with here aren't the people I interact with on Facebook/Twitter/etc. That, I think, is real value. What's the point of following the same people and getting the same content on every network?

People hate Congress, but they mostly love their representatives

The joke all week has been how low Congress' polls are, but the thing people forget is that we don't elect Congress, we elect individual representatives. And the fact is, Americans, by and large, love their individual representatives, even if they hate all the others.

Congress' poll numbers are a joke, but neither they nor the shutdown are likely to have any impact on the 2014 midterm elections.

WSJ: 'A person who commutes an hour each way has to make 40% more money to be as satisfied with life as a person who lives near the office'

One of the main reasons I live in the city is that no matter how much you make, you can't buy time. An extra hour or two at home each day is far more valuable than whatever perks I'd get (more square footage, a yard, etc.) living out in the suburbs.

YouTube Comments Will Now Be Powered By Google+

This is some huge news. The change will mean that comments are sorted by relevance (which is determined by how you behave on Google+):

"what makes a comment relevant? Three things: up-votes, the commenter’s community engagement and the commenter rep.

"In other words, the channel owner’s comments will be prioritized, and so will well known YouTube participants. As for the random guy or gal who always says “First” when watching a vid? Yah, they will quickly find themselves sinking to the bottom of the list. The same will be true for other spam, hate speech and simply comments that seem to have absolutely nothing to do with the video."

How Brands Can Be Ready For The 'Next Big Social Network'

It doesn't matter what the next "big" social network is. What people – and particularly brands – should be focused on are users’ expectations.

Social networks will rise and fall, and some may stick it out over the long haul. What isn’t going to change is the base level of responsiveness and interactivity that users expect.

Gary Vaynerchuk's Analysis of the British Airways Twitter Complaint

This is really smart (original emphasis retained):

"Ok, so you have six followers: Sally, Jimmy, Bobby, Yacko, Wacko, and Dot. You tweet out that you hate British Airways. One of those six “completely irrelevant” followers retweets you — not exactly sure how six human beings can be irrelevant, but that’s a different story for a different day. So anyway, Sally retweets this, and she has 39 followers, which is probably still “irrelevant” by our friend’s point of view. Now let’s say one of those 39 people happens to be her friend from college… who happens to be a showrunner on The Today Show. What if that happens? What if that showrunner brings the story to the producers and all of a sudden you’re leading off the next episode of The Today Show?"

Oliver West Balcerak

Sorry I've been so quiet lately, everyone. This guy was born Saturday, and I've had my head down, figuring out this parenting thing, ever since. Normal posts will return soon :)

Any Good G+ Blogs?

Hi, all. I'm looking for a good Google+ blog, kind of like AllFacebook/AllTwitter for those two networks. Do you guys have any suggestions for Google+-specific blogs?

'Facebook, Twitter And Pinterest All Dwarf Google+ For Social Sharing'

I keep seeing infographics like this one, which AllTwitter shared last week. My reaction: Sure, but what value are you getting out of those shares? The feedback I get on Google+, especially in this group, is often way more valuable (and from far more varied sources) than when I share with a larger, broader audience.

Updating G+ Page Owners/Managers Is A Pain In The Ass

If you manage a Google+ page for a brand, I highly recommend creating a separate Google account to act as the "Owner" of that page. That way, it never changes, and you can add/remove Managers whenever you need to.

The way Google+ has it set up, Owners are the only ones who can add/remove Managers, and a Manager can only be made an Owner after he/she has managed the page for at least two weeks. So, if your page Owner disappears, you're basically screwed. Make it a shared Google account, and update the password any time someone on your team leaves.

The Dumbest Way To Start Your Day (That I Just Did)

It's entirely possible to do this one thing that feels so right at the time, but actually screws you over twofold and completely destroys your morning. Spoiler alert: It's a button.

Why I Always Shoot, Then Instagram

This is why I always use the iPhone's HD camera to shoot photos and then upload to #Instagram (IG defaults to the non-HD camera). You can zoom and find all sorts of cool stuff.

What Does 200 Calories Look Like?

This is a really fascinating website with a really simple premise: It shows photos of various foods and what 200 calories of those foods looks like. Predictably, you have to eat half a garden of celery to get to 200, whereas a small pile of Doritos will get you there in no time.

You Found A Relevant Hashtag; What Now?

My latest post for the Curator blog focuses on what to do once you've found a relevant hashtag for your brand to interact with. Here's the thing: It's not enough to just start tagging it in all your posts (in fact, that's a horrible idea).

Google Chrome Profiles are rocking my workspace

Have you guys used Profiles for Google Chrome? They're essentially separate browsers in the same browser. I manage multiple social presences throughout the day, and being able to seamlessly shift between logins -- while still in Chrome, which I can hardly do without -- is a lifesaver.

Ezra Klein: "I’m going back to bookmarks — and other people’s curation.... My hope is to combine enough different forms of curation that I break out of my habits and regularly see content I wouldn’t have known to look for."

I don't think I'm gonna dump RSS -- I love +feedly -- but I am planning to do a digital version of turning my junk drawer upside down and giving it a good shake before putting the things I need back in.
