Could the best Entrepreneur Tips fit on an Index Card?  I never heard about this till a few days ago when I saw this report about it on public television, but it apparently made quite a splash on social media - and regular media..  A guy made the claim that the best personal investment advice could fit on an index card, with just six or seven main points.  That index card, and a report on how it went viral is attached to this post.

What was interesting is that most of the advice was just common sense - things like  "save 10 to 20 percent of your income" or "pay off your credit card balance each month".   Now what you need to know is that people interested in personal finance are a lot like us.   There are thousand of books covering the topic, countless blogs and discussion groups, and many, many investment experts earn a living by giving "advice" onthis to... more »

What was interesting is that most of the advice was just common sense - things like  "save 10 to 20 percent of your income" or "pay off your credit card balance each month".   Now what you need to know is that people interested in personal finance are a lot like us.   There are thousand of books covering the topic, countless blogs and discussion groups, and many, many investment experts earn a living by giving "advice" on this topic.   To say that all this advice could fit on a single index card, struck at the heart and soul of an entire industry.

What about us?  I read entrepreneur advice more of less constantly.  Could all I have read really be summed up with some basic points that could fit on an index card?   Honestly, I don't know, but it is worth a shot is it not?  What are the most important "tips" you have heard or read that you think were most important in developing your career or business as an entrepreneur?

Feel free to give more than one.  Maybe we will even agree on a few of them as being most important, or could vote on which ones are best and come up with our own "index card advice".

I have a few in mind, but someone else start.___

Some one just wrote me a private message with a minor personal request.  I read it quickly and didn't pay much attention to the name.  Since it was in my notices, it has now been "marked as read" and since the person didn't @reply me I don't seem to have any way to find it.   I get several hundred notification every day - is this now gone forever?

Cool, saw this when I first went out this morning and it's just steps from my apartment. Just walking back and I noticed it's parked in a different place. I think that means this is its usual parking spot now. Since I don't have a car at the moment this could come in handy.

Google Project Fi. So I have been suffering for some time with a crappy cell phone and payment plans, and have been sniffing around for something different.  I have had my eye on Google's Project Fi for some time, but yesterday they greatly reduced the "barriers to entry" so I jumped and signed up.

Google "innovates" less than most people think - they tend to copy other business models or simply acquire, and then improve technologies.   With the pricing on Project Fi, however, they do seemed to have innovated and hit something of a "sweet spot" that was not readily available in the market.  The service itself costs $20 a months for unlimited calls and texts, and then a  flat fee of $10 per gigabyte of data transfer.   They ask you to "estimate" your data usage and they charge you in advance, but you can buy more at any time.  In thisway, i... more »

In this way, it is similar to one of those "pay as you go plans" but cheaper - you won't find $10/GB prices anywhere else that I know of.   Best of all, any unused data will "carry over" until you have used it.  People simply don't like buying something that will "expire" - Google has wisely figured this into their pricing, and seems to have come up with a fairly "straight deal" as a result.

The technology works by switching between two existing carriers Sprint and T-Mobile, but will also switch to WiFi if it is available, and you won't be charged anything for they data that goes over WiFi.  They say the device "decides" which carrier or WiFi network to use based on what will give you the best quality, but I have read a few complaints about problems with voice over IP.    Most reviews I have read though are from people fairly happy with the service.

The downside of the service - and a barrier to entry for many of us, was that you couldn't use your existing phone for the service - they required you to buy a Google Nexus phone, and the cheapest deal on a Nexus 5X that you could find out there was about $350.   While I am sure it is a great phone - or at least a good one, when money is tight that can make you gulp a little bit.   Another downside, is that if you elect to use your existing Google Phone number, you apparently loose it forever - it becomes linked to the phone.  They may have partially addressed this but when you register there is a while screen explaining how you will lose Google Voice.   They are also apparently forcing people to use Google Hangouts for SMS which I am not too happy about but will keep an open mind.

So yesterday I sent Google $200 bucks - more than I really wanted to pay at the moment, but they did hit a "price point" with me - and probably lots of other folks.  Hopefully I will get this by the end of the week, and will let you know what I think after I have actually tried it.___

Trump's Troll Army.   What are we dealing with here? - is the the social media version of McCarthy?   The thing is - trolling works -  negative energy affects us much more than positive energy, that is just the way we are wired.  There is an element of the conservative movement who are natural trolls anyway - they see their role to be disruption any liberal or progressive discussion they find - often with personal attacks.   Has Trump simply taken over leadership of this group, and validated their techniques?

All this is very early in its development - I started this organizing in late December and now have about a dozen people signed on - all highly qualified.  Here's an overview of the organizations and services being planned:

San Diego Independent Business Professionals.   In speaking with local independent professionals, I sensed a frustration that I share with the kinds of business networking opportunities available to us - they are either oriented to entrepreneurs and startups, and are somewhat over-hyped, or are "Chamber of Commerce" type organizations oriented to well established businesses.

I think there could be a way to combine real-life meetups and networking events with virtual meetings and online forums in a way that will make if far more efficient than traditional business associations.  For the latter I have established a Google Groups (this is the evolution of the old listserv technology - not to be confused with Google+ Communities).   While it is just getting started, we have already had some interesting discussions there and will soon be organizing meetings and mutual support programs.

Small Business Services Cooperative.   This will be a coalition of independent businesses bound together by a agreement covering revenue and profit sharing that includes incentives for marketing and client engagement.  Members who join the cooperative will be expected to sign a legally binding MOU (memo of understanding) and will need to have a developed service or practice area.   There will be shared information systems - including a CRM (customer relationship management) system and cooperative marketing programs - including advertising, and some management functions - including quality assurance.

The cooperative will offer a variety of business and technical services - often with a team approach, that are professionally managed  but affordable for smaller businesses.   This is something I have thought about for a while, and the original plan was for it to be essentially a virtual service.   It still might be, but right now I want to see if I can get it going on a local level first.   The revenue sharing plan we intend to use for this cooperative is attached to this post.

Small Business & Entrepreneur Advisory.   This is aspirational - it doesn't exist yet, but the idea is that once the cooperative is underway, we would be able to bring an entire multi-disciplinary team to advise startups, small business and other independent professionals in their best path for growth and opportunity.   It is envisioned that these services will be provided at a discounted rate for new small businesses.

Again, this is all very early in development, but it seems have at least a little traction and is moving forward.   If you are in the region and provide almost any kind of small business service I would like to hear from you.  Please send me your email address and phone number by private message - you should be able to find mine on my profile here if you would rather write or call.

I'm looking forward to meeting more of my neighbors and making some business happen for all of us.___

What scam is this?   I have been advertising and making business posts on Craigslist, and I actually do at least occasionally get some decent prospects there.  Goodness though - do I attract lots of scammers.

This one is fairly common.  They want someone with a printer to print checks and mail things for them.  I assume they are doing this, because whatever criminal activity they are engaged in, these "fronts' will be the evidence trail - they are doing the most risky part of the crime.

But what is the crime?   What will these checks be used for?  I am tempted to troll back to find out, but I really don't have time for adventures like that right now.
