What do you plan to accomplish by the end of the year?    There is not as much time left as you might think.  Most of us are still in "Summer mode" and a good chunk of December is consumed by the holidays.

This is something we did on the entrepreneurs community last year and some got decent results.   This year, we added a little "padding" - it starts on Tuesday which should give you a bit of time to think about it, and ends on December 17 - a week before Christmas.   I just put my goals in the comments there - feel free to do the same.

100 Day Challenge: September 8th to December 17
Summer's almost over entrepreneurs-  time to get our asses in gear.    This year, we are repeating our "100 Day Challenge" where we state publicly what we intend to accomplish in the next 100 days - whether in our business or personal lives, and then do our best to make it happen.

When we did this last year, we waited until there were exactly 100 days left in the year, and then announced it just a few days before.   There were a few problems with this: first, it didn't give people enough time to think about their 100 day plan, and second, nothing really gets done in the last few weeks of the year anyway, so we were really giving ourselves less than 100 days.

This year,  we are putting a little padding into the system.   The challenge won't begin until next Tuesday, September 8th (the day after Labor Day in the U.S. - generally recognized as the end of Summer) and will conclude December 17 - one week before Christmas Eve.    So for all practical purposes, this is the same as asking "What do you intend to accomplish in the remainder of 2015?

Lots of things can happen in 100 days.  Napoleon, escaped from his prison on Elba, assembled an army, marched to Paris and recaptured the French government in less than 100 days.   During President Roosevelt's first 100 days in office he reformed the American banking systems and took the first steps to end the great depression.   Einstein came up with his special theory of relativity in less than 100 days while working in the Swiss Patent Office and having to hide his work from his boss so he wouldn't get caught.

If all these great things can happen in 100 days, then surely our little companies and ventures can make significant progress in 100 days.

The rules are simple - there are no rules.  This can be a goal you wish to accomplish, a habit you would like to break or make, an activity you would like to do on a consistent basis - whatever.  Just tell us what you intend to accomplish in 100 days the comments here, and commit that you really are going to try.

I have been told that best results for challenges like this is to just have one major objective, have it be as specific as possible and do it every day if possible.   I think I am going to have two or three though, which I will post shortly - so someone else can start.   If you are not quite ready yet you have almost a week to think about it, but let us know as soon as you can.

Google wants us to use Linkedin for Small Business.  This is an official Google Page and this is the group that runs the "Google Small Business Community".   I must admit, this one has me scratching my head.  Several  people have asked me what Google is doing with this community, and I always have to tell them I have no idea.

When Google first launched this community, it had few members and wasn't getting much traction, and I was contacted by their previous community manager asking about my "Entrepreneurs, Self-Employed & Small Business" community which at the time was much larger then theirs.

They subsequently routed traffic to themselves so have quickly grown to over 500,000 members but their purpose has never been clear to me.  I thought it was to help small business make more effective use of Google technology, but apparently I waswrong.... more »

How do you share business contacts?.    I will be announcing a new business shortly, that will require different professionals to share business contact and business prospect information.   These people will be similar to much of the user population on this site.   They are solopreneurs who each have their own business or brand.   Most of the systems I have looked at for this don't account for this common situation - they assume that the people sharing the information are in the same organization, or at least, operating under the same brand.

I know there is all sorts of stuff on the CRM (Customer Relationship Management) market, but there is a network effect here that works against us.   What if you choose a particular CRM but the person you want to share the contact information with doesn't use the same system?

It strikes me that this must be a common - almostuniver...

It strikes me that this must be a common - almost universal problem, so I have to assume that people are working out solutions.  May I ask how people in this community are addressing this?   I'm starting to think that almost everyone needs a "custom" system to some extent so would like to know what people are using, and if they have come up with any procedures or technologies for sharing this information.  What do you use for CMS (contact management system).  Are you using CRM yet?  What is working, and what isn't.

Since I am somewhat dissatisfied  with my own systems in this area, I am mostly fishing for information.  ___

Do you have a highly visual mind?   I do not, and I hope this isn't another disorder I may have, but apparently there is a name for it now: "aphantasia".

I was always fascinated by NLP  (neurolingustic programming) a school of thought that that postulated that people have a "primary communication channel" - which was either visual, auditory or feeling/action (kinological).    People of different "types" were said to have different characteristics and if this is true, I was likely in that last type - feeling/action oriented.

For example, people with visual minds are quick thinkers - I can attest to that as I had a girlfriend with a highly visual mind that was lighting fast - to the point where she said it caused problems for her sometime.   I had a work associate once who had an amazing ear - he would remember everything anyone said, and the... more »

The idea that there are different "types" like this is controversial, but it was somewhat comforting to think that a deficiency in one area might mean more power in another.   Still, I think I am jealous of those with visual minds.   I can bring up some imagery but "thinking in pictures" is a little beyond me. ___

Nice late afternoon swim at a beach not far from my apartment.   Took this pic of the main lifeguard tower in Pacific Beach while sitting on my bicycle so it is a little out of whack.  Even though it is the height of tourist season, the beach isn't all that crowded.  .

The Ashley Madison Hoax.  Since I am single, and would never register for a site like this, I can speak freely about this.  As immoral as people might consider this site to be, what is even worse in my opinion is that is was a complete fraud - there were virtually no women on the site.   Now, this is a little like complaining about someone who sells some fake heroin - maybe the stuff they are selling is harmless, while the real stuff can kill you.

Still, a fraud is a fraud, and should it surprise us that a site with highly questionably morality like this, would also be dishonest?  I have some experience with this having used open source dating software to build other applications - like business partner matching services for which it is almost ideally suited.  Since almost all dating sites have more men then women, there are a number of ways to address this - often women are givenfree ... more »

Still, a fraud is a fraud, and should it surprise us that a site with highly questionably morality like this, would also be dishonest?  I have some experience with this having used open source dating software to build other applications - like business partner matching services for which it is almost ideally suited.  Since almost all dating sites have more men then women, there are a number of ways to address this - often women are given free accounts, for example.  Another far more questionable way, however, is "fake accounts".

The user forums for software like this is often filled with offers for "10,000 user profiles" - they come complete with vague descriptions and profile pictures presumably scraped from real social media profiles.   Someone starting a new dating site or other social network, could immediately populate their site with fake users, and on first glance some people might be fooled into thinking the site has a population of active users.   The problem of course, is what happens when a new user attempts to contact one of the fake users - does the operator then fake a response?  What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.

Ashley Madison needs to be investigated - not for morality, but for criminal fraud, and if their employees were creating these fake accounts, they have some explaining to do.   ___

This article strikes an optimistic note - I would particularly see these "platforms to reduce risk" they discuss.   Risk is a part of all business, but unlike corporate workers who can get rewarded with up to two years of unemployment insurance, the self-employed can be devastated by a down turn in business.   ___
