Anti-Aging (Anti-Inflammatory) Diet

·       Our diet provides an abundance of micro-nutrients (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants) yet fosters a moderate calorie intake without being hungry.  It is more about how to eat then how much to eat. Aim for 30% protein / 30% fat / 40% carb (which is the ZONE diet). Eat “organic” as much as possible and avoid GMO’s (Genetically Modified foods). Note that almost all processed foods contain GMO corn products and are not labeled. Hydrate with filtered water: 2 glasses beyond ½ your body weight in ounces of water. Adjust up for higher activity. Your “plate” should be 2/3 veggies and complex carbs, 1/3 lean protein.

AOL > MySpace > Facebook > Google+

Is the Google+ doing enough to overtake Facebook?

The social media evolution and revolution has been interesting to watch. My online life bean on a BBS piped, okay trickled, through an 8K modem into a dedicated box with and an LED screen. CompuServe and AOL were revolutionary. They were the first social networks.

AOL bought CompuServe. AOL tried to be "The Internet Portal." Trying to do too much in one app was - too much. Trying to be great at many things as Google is was not wrong. Trying to do it with one all or nothing bloated app was. AOL coulda shoulda owned social.

My kids fled to MySpace. Their parents were on AOL, so of course they went somewhere else. In the days before the internet, we found dark corners in the schoolyard and park. MySpace offered homepage customization to createyo... more »

Good morning, all!

First of all my apologies for having notified you. Let me explain:

I have been noticing for a while now that I don't see as many posts as I should see, given that I have 415 people in my circles. I checked this this morning. I saw the same ol' posts that I had plussed hours ago after maybe 5 new posts. Given that G+ is the home of people from all over the world where in every hour at least someone is awake and posting on G+, there should be a high influx of new posts every minute or so.

I went to the profiles of some of you and noticed there that, depending on how prolific a poster you are, I only saw every 3rd to 5th post of you, and as the circles are sorted by relevancy (not mine obviously), the profiles I have checked out so far are only the ones of the people on the top of my biggest circle. I will continue to visit your profiles, each... more »

75th Anniversary of Pops 1st Recording

For as long as I can remember, I've been in love with Louis' playing. I think his appearance in Red Nichols & the Five Pennies is my earliest recollection of Satchmo. Of course, they jammed to "When the Saints Go Marching In."

During the sixties, I listened to a jazz station while painting  in the middle of the night (oils and acrylic). Back then, jazz, dixieland, ragtime, were uncool. I didn't care. Their music goes deep below skin and bones into the soul and that's why it survives and why young people love Pops.

So here it is and look for some more of his tracks tonight.

Thank You to All of the Mothers in Our Life

To you women who make the sun shine on rainy days, who make scrapes go away, who put secret ingredients in our food not found on spice racks, who encourage us to be better than we are, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Women carry us into the world and their real labor begins after we're born. They nurture with hopeful love that we'll do them proud. When we fall down, they pick us up. They inspire us to be great and whatever we do, good or bad; they love us no matter what.

We have lots of unrecognized mothers. Women who raise other people's children, children they've adopted or taken on in a new marriage, children who walk into their life in need of a mother. Teachers who love their students so much they cry at the end of each school year when their kids move on. The old woman in the neighborhoodwh... more »

Welcome to the G+ Campus

Frequently we ask ourselves what G+ really is. Some say it is a kinda giant brain and we all appear to be glial cells in it. Others talk about the singularity. Most of us think it's a social network because that's the most familiar concept we have and we are comfortable with that. Yet it's unlike any social network we have known before. Trends emerge almost spontaneously, subjects arising independently in an emergent culture way where synchronicity plays a vital part.

But really it's none of that. +Marisa Goudy  nailed it when she said it reminded her of campus. At College synchronicity is everywhere because everything there has been engineered to challenge your mind, broaden your horizons and make you learn.

I am proofing a book on Hangouts I have written and I posted a snippet this morning, from that(h... more »

Your "Likes" on Facebook and +1s Tell All About You!

You're going to be very surprised by this post by +Shelly Kramer about a disconcerting report.

Rather than rewrite Shelly's perfect post, I'll wet your whistle. From your Facebook "likes" some the traits they determined include age, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion, political views and intelligence. Some less obvious traits such as “satisfaction with life,” substance abuse and “whether your parents stayed together” were also measured.

So what about Google's +1s? Even though they are not in the study, Google aggregates substantially more information about you from Gmail, blog and G+ posts, comments on every social network, shopping, searches, Google Docs, Calendar, their endless tentacles of apps.

And how ill they use this? Here's anexcerpt for ... more »

Is Klout Regaining Clout?

Klout is pushing the value of influencers, or who they can prove through their metrics to be influential in a variety of ways. And businesses are buying in.

American Airlines cut a deal to give anyone with a 55+ Klout score access to their lounges whether they are flying American or not. American sees value in having influencers checking in from one of their lounges.

“Klout for business provides a simple dashboard to discover and connect with topical influencers. Klout reported that it has now attracted more than 200,000 business accounts for its service."

Share your expertise by answering a question on Klout and you show up in Bing's search for a related search.

Maybe Klout ain't a slouch. Read the rest of Mark's post.

A Sad Goodbye to a Great Leader & Special Effects Genius, Ray Harryhausen

Ray's impact in the movie industry is immeasurable.  My parents weaned me on scifi. Watching aliens destroy Washington DC in "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers as a child won me over for life. I own most of his movies. The list is long. "Jason and the Argonauts" is still one of my favorites. The statue of Talos coming to life on isle of Bronze, the fight with skeletons, were cutting edge in their day.

Ray inspired all of the great modern special effects people, Cameron, Lucas, Spielberg, all of them. He worked with little to create a lot, often with paltry budgets. He made models by hand and filmed stop motion; painstakingly shooting one frame at a time trying to achieve realism.

Ray was an artist who loved what he did and inspired his viewers and those who followed in hisfoot... more »

LinkedIn's Sales Solutions honored me with an invitation to join with some of the sales thought leaders I admire most in their current slideshare, "The Future of Sales."

+J.C. Kendall called me a true geek and suggested I get new glasses to match my geek persona. My prognostication was extracted from an edgy post I drafted a few months ago. Here is a synopsis:

The future sales professional works from a command center that manages the entire customer life cycle. Inbound leads matched and delivered to sales reps who manage the nurturing process with personalized marketing. Business intelligence timely delivered as alerts and prompts for improved prospecting and sales acceleration. The dashboard provides a real-time overview of the entire post-sale experience from delivery andim... more »

Paraprosdokians from my 84 YO Mother

Mom loves her junk email and sharing it. Some of it is worth sharing like this one:

Paraprosdokians are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected; frequently humorous. Winston Churchill loved them (and I do too).

1. Where there's a will, I want to be in it.

2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you, but it's still on my list.

3. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright
    until you hear them speak.

4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

6. War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

8. Toste... more »

A note to leaders: What's good for the goose is good for the mayor.

It turns out this story is fake, thanks to my friend
+Charles H. Green, "The Trusted Adviser." That said, it still makes a fine and fun example to practice what you preach and what goes around comes around.

What I find to be the biggest breakdown in organizations is the double standard, "Do as I say, not as I do." If you want your people to behave a particular way, whether it is eating healthfully or treating you your clients with courtesy and respect, than behave to your people exactly how you want them to behave. Because, people do as you do, not as you say.

And don't believe everything you read! As Abraham Lincoln said, "Not everything you read on the Internet is true."

Want Change?

Selling change is difficult, even when selling to salespeople. It is said, salespeople are the easiest people to sell. I think that is only true when you do the job right with honesty and integrity. Bringing about change in your organization takes planning. Bringing about change to the sales force can be exceptionally painful for +Tamara Schenk's post is relevant to all change managers.

Break a Window to Get Your Customer’s Attention

My good friend and veteran sales guy +Robert Terson, author of "Selling Fearlessly: A Master Salesman's Secrets For the One-Call-Close Salesperson", asked me to write a guest post for his site. Bob's been after me for over a year. I finally caved in with a story from early sales days when I  briefly sold in a short sales cycle.

Getting and maintaining your customer's attention, cutting though the noise and keeping it out of your meetings is more difficult by the day. My method worked in this instance, but I do not recommend in case of emergency, break glass!

Why Does Bo Jackson Use 5-Hour Energy?

'Cause Bo needs the income from the commercials!

That's exactly what I thought as soon as the commercial began between innings while watching the Yankee game.

Third party endorsements are one of the best ways to gain new clients. Another person endorsing you is great marketing and public relations. That's why companies pay celebrities to pitch!  Maybe you can't afford well known people like Bo to stump your product, but you can make use of this  practice affordably.

You're wondering, "How do I get third party endorsements of value that I can afford?" There are numerous methods that depend on the space you do business in, b2b, b2bc, b2g (business to government), local, national and international.

Are you a member of a business association, the Chamber of Commerce or alocal b... more »

Grand Prix de la Baguette de la Ville de Paris (Best Baguette of Paris 2013)

"A baker carries an armful of baguettes, French bread, as he arrives to compete for the 'Grand Prix de la Baguette de la Ville de Paris' (Best Baguette of Paris 2013) annual prize at the Chambre Professionnelle des Artisans Boulangers Patissiers in Paris April 25, 2013. The baguette is a French cultural symbol par excellence and the competition saw 203 Parisian bakers who compete for recognition as finest purveyor of one of France's most iconic staples. The baguettes are registered, given anonymous white wrappings and an identification number. They are then carefully weighed and measured to ensure they do not violate the contest's strict rules. 52 entries were withdrawn for failing to measure between 55-70cm long or not matching the acceptable weight of between 250-300g. Every year, the winner... more »

From Top Model to Role model, an Incredible Story

10 years ago, I placed my 30+ year career as a sales leader in second place to make children, our future men and women, our priority. Quitting cigarettes was easier than not pursuing my dream to sales consult and write full time. (That is changing now that our project does not need as much of my attention). My wife Sally and I committed ourselves to work with children.

Sally danced for Joffrey Ballet for five years. At fifteen, she performed at  the Kennedy Center for the grand opening. Yet she never spoke about her career with me and she had no aspirations for our daughters to dance. With dance on both sides of our family, I guess it is in their DNA, because they are both professional contemporary ballet dancers. We opened a dance school in early 2004 as a place for young men and women to develop a healthy self-image.

Apple no longer the Apple of the Investors' Eye

Did Steve Jobs choose and groom the wrong replacement or was replacing himself impossible to do?

A replacement for Steve Jobs is somewhat impossible. He is the only one. Nevertheless, he could have picked a few people to wear innovation, presentation and leadership shoes.

What do you think?

"How much does that cost?" is different from "What is your price?"

Cost relates to a variety of factors that reach beyond price, impact on your customers P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, production, logistics and most importantly, your customers' customers.

Price is the amount on an invoice or contract. Price reflects the cash payment to purchase your solution with a value substantial greater than the dollar amount to acquire it.

+Dave Brock gives you fundamentals to leverage value when asked, "How much does it cost?"
