Kids are great! Everyone should spend more quality time with their kids. This is my little sister...
And, please...try to be more understanding with your children...because even though they can be remarkably smart, there's a lot of things they're not good at...like understanding the social order of families, why we do certain things, etc. I care deeply about this matter. Many parents expect too little on the one hand but what they do expect, they seem to think it should come "preinstalled." NO! It's YOUR job to "install" the personality and behavior you want.

Check out Positive Reinforcement.
Thanks. Do society a favor. I don't mean to have a harsh tone about this but I care very much about this and I have seen and read a lot of examples of parents acting and thinking irrationally about developmental psychology.

Do you think the NSA fiasco of spying on domestic United States citizens is gut tensing-ly distressing? Get a load of this. This isn't the first time our secretive, manipulative, incompetent, and self-interested government has willfully and knowingly ignored Constitutional declarations.

Here, we have a video showing Panetta claiming that military actions of war require NO Congressional Authorization, in direct defiance to our US Constitution.

Continuous cameras, 2D computer materials, better gene therapy, photovoltaic ferroelectric memory, DNA self assembling colloids, digit regeneration.

1. Tweaking Camera Power Circuitry to Boost Battery Life.
By making some basic adjustments to the power management circuitry of cameras, power consumption can be reduced by 95% while performing continuous imaging http://www.technologyreview.com/news/515951/camera-tweaks-should-boost-smartphone-battery-life/. Given how we currently use the camera in our devices this might sound trivial. But for emerging devices like Google Glass the experience is one of intermittent camera usage or short battery-limited continuous capture. With this ability to reduce power draw and allow continuous capture such devices quickly become a far more intimate external sensory appendage. Just need to... more »

A Dystopian Digital Experience, Why it Exists, and How to Fix it

I want apps to more or less go away and be replaced by dashboards and apps that control multiple company's functionality. I don't see the sense in having to open up an app just to scan a QR code, look at the weather, play music, etc. Furthermore, the data and the protocols for controlling devices should tie into a layer of abstraction on top of the Web.

So far...the "Internet of Things" is a "dystopia" of proprietary hardware and incompatible, siloed, experiences.

Digital odometers on bikes and the sensors on treadmills should wirelessly communicate with fitness trackers. Music and other media should be easily streamed to car audio systems or home theater systems. Eventually, more homes will be built with automation-ready technology for controlling the lights, fans, climate... more »

Fitness Trackers? Which one is right for me?

Anyone use a Jawbone UP? How about any of the other fitness tracking devices such as the FitBit, BodyMedia, Basis, Nike Fuel Band, etc...?

I'm weighing the options. I find the amount of sensors in the BodyMedia line of devices quite compelling but the price plus monthly service fees, plus the form factor are all pretty discouraging to me. The Basis has much of the same sensor capability as the BodyMedia devices but is a bit on the expensive side. I do appreciate the fact that it has a screen on what amounts to basically a smartwatch. I think it's cool to be able to view the various stats right on your wrist without even needing to pull out a smartphone.

So I'm a bit undecided between the Jawbone UP and the Basis. I really think BodyMedia has a good device too but their monthly pricing scheme seems outrageous... more »

What is consciousness? What is conscious?

11:15 to 14:41 contains some really cool thought processes that I've basically had myself and relates them in a really simple, reasonable manner.

I especially find the brief description of a wave (necessarily spreading over a period of time and only "formally whole" within a unit of time) to be highly thought provoking. It is of course wholly factual that a wave (which happens to be pretty important in our Universe, including electrons and other atoms) is an oscillating, changing pattern and its affects on its surroundings is necessarily incomplete when observed before its cycle has been completed fully.

This would seem to add a very new layer of possibilities to our understanding of causality and the flow of "information" within the Universe. To what time, place, thing, or process can we really isolate the... more »

Prototype 10,000x faster than NAND flash memory

With its roots in solar panel technology materials scientist at the University of California have stored data as polarization states in bismuth ferrite, this can be read with a laser pule. The pulse generates a voltage which is different based on the polarization, and there we have 0s and 1s. Reads and writes happen in under 10 nanoseconds at only 3 volts.

To go from concept to shops a lot of engineering work is need for the optics involved, and the memory elements need to come down in size to a point where storage density is competitive. But there doesn't appear any physical reason why these challenges couldn't be met.

Scaling graphene fabrication, improving DNA synthesis, understanding memristors, magnetic monopoles, micro-vacuums, molecular imaging.

1. Fabricating Larger Graphene Sheets and Better Graphene Light Sensors.
The conventional industrial process of chemical vapour deposition has been used to manufacture high-strength graphene sheets as large as TV screens http://engineering.columbia.edu/even-defects-graphene-strongest-material-world-1. The sheets are not a uniform crystal, but rather are stitched together from small crystalline grains, and yet the final product is still 90% as strong as a uniform graphene crystal. This is a huge step towards scaling up graphene super-materials for industrial and commercial uses. We also had the development of a graphene light sensor that is 1,000 times as sensitive as previous sensors... more »

Corn farmers cranking up chemical pesticides as Monsanto's GMO fails.

Monsanto promised a genetically modified corn variant that makes its own pesticide inside the corn so farmers wouldn't have to spray to kill rootworms.

Any first-year biology student can tell you this is stupid because it simply favors the selection of worms unfazed by the GMO corn. Now these artificially selected superworms are taking over cornfields, and farmers are having to pay extra for pesticide-producing corn AND chemically sprayed pesticides.

The industrial agriculture industry is thrilled -- everybody is getting paid. Farmers are going broke paying extra for both GMOs that don't require pesticides AND pesticides -- or passing costs along to the consumers.

The public is now dealing with both untested GMO food and additional agricultural toxins in the air, soil and... more »

What the hell happened to Federated Social Networks?

Today marks the third anniversary of this epic interview I did with +Robert Scoble. I took the time to reflect on what happened since then, why these initiatives failed, and where to go from here.

(3) Resource Based Economy (proponents: Jacque Fresco, etc)

(5) Traditionalist: encourage better education systems, institute common sense policy fixes, race with machines (proponents: Mcafee, Brynjolfsson, even their mortal enemy Cowen seems to fall in this category of proposing small tweaks to the status quo)

I've been telling everyone how great I think Workflowy is for awhile now. Well now, I'm asking for a little help. If anybody is planning on using this amazing web app or would like to check it out, please use my referral code so I can get more free space! I am able to create 250 additional points per month in my interactive Outline for every new user who signs up using the code I share.

I really see a lot of utility in this app but don't currently really have tons of cash to pay for the pro version so my life would be much better if I could save a lot more of my research notes in this very well organized and simple app. (it makes organization a breeze)

Thanks, network!!
