This is happening at "old media" companies across the country: creation of autonomous digital marketing units that sell SEO, SEM, business websites and network-delivered behavioral ad targeting, independently of the "old media" sales force and often in competition with it. I think there are something like 250 digital products in the portfolio. Life in newsrooms has become a lot more complicated in the last decade with reporters shooting video and filing from the field with smartphones and continuous updating and social media and databases and so on, but that's nothing compared with the complexity of life on the sales side. This is happening at companies that are serious about adapting to the new digital realities.

New revenue sources are creating a brighter, more complex outlook for the newspaper industry. I know our revenue folks are highly focused on local digital marketing services, which previously weren't even being counted.

It's a long way from Savannah to Hollywood, not to mention Bollywood. But a company based in India is building a $90 million studio to take advantage of the creative community that has grown around the Savannah College of Art and Design and expand its footprint in the United States. A look at their film catalog suggests they're not exactly a producer of Bollywood musicals.

Hundreds of thousands of people partying all weekend ... and only 33 arrests for disorderly conduct. And 17 for public urination, but if you saw the line that I saw at the porta-potties you might forgive that one. Only one DUI. Hard to imagine. Perfect weather, too.

Plussers!  I wanted to share with you a new webseries I launched today on demystifying wine tasting.  The premise is I take a bottle of wine that's been wrapped in a brown bag out to the man on the street and we do a wine tasting and then talk about it.  What I make them do is describe the wine in terms of their occupation.  For example a teacher may describe the taste is A+ or an F!  The first episode is with a woman who owns and runs a handmade shoe store.  See what she has to say: Brown Bag Wine Tasting: Bare Sole

I think mapping is one of the great breakthrough technologies the Internet has enabled, so I grabbed ForeverMap2 this morning for my Kindle Fire. I was surprised that it quickly geolocated me (based on my cable modem's IP address).

The UI is simple, clean, uncluttered -- unlike Mapquest, which also is available for the Kindle Fire. Maps are a bit slow to download and initially render, but very fast after that -- they appear to be SVG or something similar, not blocks of bitmaps.

Routing from the condo to work was extremely fast but offered only one route (as does Mapquest).  Google and iOS maps offer three. The route it offered is close to what I drive, a bit counterintuitive, as it goes through Savannah's historic district, but actually the fastest. Mapquest wants me to drive through Thunderbolt, which gets very congested.

Linus turns his back on the Intel '386. That's how I got started -- a frankenbox with a 33-megahertz heart, running SLS Linux. I downloaded weeklies from Finland and recompiled my own kernel. But all that code just went up in smoke. The frankenbox went up in smoke over a decade ago.

I agree wholeheartedly about the value of reporting. But a pundit is supposed to be a well-informed analyst -- hardly a "useless" role, and one that Silver himself plays. Sadly, what we mostly get (expecially from cable TV) is bullshitters and political scam peddlers posing as knowledgeable experts. It's not the role that's useless, it's the performers.
