Lee Edgerton0I've never shared a circle before. Thought I'd share my Social Media circle. It's made up of my own finds and recommendations from others. I'm always looking to trim it down depending on the content shared and whether I find it relevant for what I'm doing.Do you have any recommendations?2013-01-15 23:56:36501216CC G+

The Joy of Working in Plain Text

If you don't have a workflow for note taking you should consider it.

Personally, I have started taking all notes in Markdown (http://goo.gl/UDNBo) which provides a basic level of markup that is simple which makes taking notes quick. But I also have to share those notes often and most people I know would prefer not to get Markdown.

Pandoc

This is where a great CLI tool called Pandoc (http://goo.gl/X4Unc) comes in. Pandoc allows me to convert easily between text file formats. The two common formats I convert my Markdown files to is plain text and HTML.

OSX/Unix Simplicity

One of the workflows I use is for sharing notes. I take my meeting notes in Markdown, convert them to plain text with markdown, and place them in my system clipboard so I can paste them into an email.

To copy data to your clipboard on OSX from the CLI just pipe the output to the pbcopy command. (command that outputs text to stdout | pbcopy)

Enhancements

To enhance this so it's even easier, when I get some time I will automate my conversions with some shell scripts and then script up a small app to take the converted plain text document and email it right from the command line.

Here are some simple text workflow utils to get you started (http://goo.gl/8dkXx).___

Scroll block element vertically on mobile touch screen

I the need to scroll a block element on a mobile touch screen. Turns out it isn't as hard as I thought. You have to stop the page from scrolling and then position the block based on the Y offset of the finger doing the touching.

I documented it all in an example here http://goo.gl/MN97T

I have tested this on iOS and Android 2.3

Screen - an indispensable application for terminal work on cloud servers.

As I meandered my way through an article titled "Swap Your Laptop for an iPad + Linode" [http://goo.gl/vF9Mw], which in and of itself is a great article, I ran across a gem of an application called screen [http://goo.gl/88krd]. Screen is an incredibly powerful tool for working in a terminal window, especially when working in a remote or cloud based server. It comes preinstalled with OS X so you can easily play with it and learn how to use it.

The biggest key to screen is the ability to attach and detach a session to a terminal. So if you log off or your connection drops the application you had running will continue to run. You simply log back in and reattach it to the new terminal.

I highly recommend this tutorial for learning the basics of screen [http://goo.gl/jUFVl]

Is the age of not paying for things on the Internet coming to a close, finally?

As the services and content that we use and enjoy gets consumed (and killed) by larger companies, gets overrun with so many ads that the content becomes invisible or simply goes out of business, isn't it time to pay for what you consume?

"People’s capacity for bullshit is rapidly diminishing"
"NPR’s COPE (Create Once Publish Everywhere) system has become the poster child for next-generation content management systems because it separates content from presentation and as a result is able to reach a host of web, native, and display environments. While authors can still write markup, content gets stored by the CMS in a language-agnostic format. By avoiding storing “dirty” content (content that contains markup and presentation styles) and keeping everything modular, the content becomes more portable and can get served up in the format best suited for the particular context. Best of all, NPR doesn’t have to completely overhaul their system to account for whatever platforms are bound to emerge."

The Future of the Internet of Thing

This is a description of the future I am not only waiting for, but trying to find ways to implement.

"If for instance a home owner accesses his home social network and discovers he’s left the lights on while away on business, he can shut them off remotely. The lights can then tell the thermostat to power down and then check to make sure all doors and windows are locked. Outside information sources could be hooked into the network as well. For instance inclement weather reports could set off a chain reaction of device adjustments. New navigation data recommending alternate routes to avoid storm-related traffic would automatically loaded into vehicle navigation systems. Personal and office calendars could automatically be updated to allow more time to drive the appointments. The house itself could turn itself into storm mode, shutting offs... more »

Apple is holding back the mobile industry

"Apple is all about their closed ecosystem and wanting each of their users to download and receive content from the iTunes store. With that context I can’t see Apple allowing their iPhones to simply interact and touch NFC touch points at the POS or wherever they may be without having to go through the Apple “ecosystem.” In addition, just look how Apple will not let an iPhone receive content via Bluetooth from another non-iPhone (but I can do this with any other handset out there today). As we all know Bluetooth is an open standard (just like NFC) but Apple will refuse to let content be shared via this technology with other handset types. Why all of our metaphors about computers are wrong

And why you should read Vernor Vinge's book Rainbows End. With the sales of Rasberry PI, a powerful self-contained computer about the size of a credit card, everything about computing has changed. As though you didn't see this coming with the mobile tsunami going on.

NOTE: You would see a preview with this link, but the mobile Google+ app and mobile Google+ website is not feature complete.

Pre-Internet of Things Era

I think what BiKN is doing here is a commendable first step into a true Internet of Things society. Unfortunately, I don't believe this type of implementation will be all that successful, but it is a necessary precursor for future development.

This still implementation still requires the end user of the product to do too much setup and maintenance. It needs to be simplified for it to catch on.

Simple RFID stickers and a smaller more powerful RFID receiver that would give me these same capabilities along with a objects discovery service that resides right on my phone so that when I walk into a room I get a list of the items I can interact with would be ideal. It needs to feel seamless or it will become a barrier to adoption.

Google - Why no RSS?

I am a big fan of Google+, just ask anyone around me how tired they are of me talking about it.

What I find simply inexcusable at this point, is that there is no RSS feed for posts. It can't be that it is a difficult technical mountain to climb. The data is ordered and output on my profile posts page. A developer with Google legendary skills could probably output the code to accomplish this in about 30 minutes, with a short break for coffee in the middle.

Is this some for of trying to keep me boxed into Google+? I am already here. If I want to be boxed in I would use Facebook.

Is it an ad's issue, feel free to put ads in my RSS feed.

I simply cannot fathom a legitimate excuse for this, this far along in the Google+ development.

Please, someone point out how wrong I am.

Truth, lies and ethnography by +Sam Ladner

If you are a marketer and believe that when you define a survey you are really trying to understand your customer, this presentation will help dispel this fallacy and guide you to look at things differently.

Stop Stealing Dreams

Seth Godin just released his manifesto on "What are schools for?" This looks like a ver interesting read, though I haven't gotten to read it yet.

I do like how he acknowledges from the very beginning that our present education system was design to produce compliant, obedient, factory workers for manufacturing. Today that is still its focus, unfortunately, at least in the U.S., this economy no longer exists.

This deals just with education, but I think we need to start seeing more thought leaders talk about how things have changed. The U.S. economic and foreign policy still centers around a manufacturing economy that doesn't exist any longer. If you even tangentially have noticed the current crop of politically leaders vying for the presidency, you see more of this tired old thought and ideas.

We need a new crop of leaders and thought leaders, that stop talking about the past and start leading into the future.___
