Is the new layout with the endless more in posts but especially in comment-rich interactions, driving you nuts?

The end of G+ text by #WordSmiths as we know it: pinterest won
Every text longer than a few lines is now shortened by a ´more´ button, making text the least visible element on G+.
It requires an extra click to even read it while photos can now be shown in full res. Pinterest won and #WhiteSpace is relegated to show more visuals and less text.

If they start to eat you, join forces: Samsung Nexus defragments Android
A clever move for both companies; releasing a Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus edition with stock unlocked Android. A solution which works well for all parties involved.
Samsung can go on putting its heavily customized almost non-Android interface on its successful Galaxy series, while Google gets a technically perfect phone with a brand which really sells on board of the ´pure´ Android experience.
Who will gain more from this move: Samsung or Google?

Which post do you recommend reading which is NOT about Google I/O
As much as I´m interested in the Google conference, my streams seem to be cluttered with photos of people checking in, standing in queues or announcing that we will soon see the keynote.
With the streams not fully working at the moment it would be great if we could collect some must-read posts of today which will otherwise be buried in I/O posts.

Google to Introduce Music Offering

Google will integrate this music option within its Android operating system. Android is widely used in both smartphones and tablets. Google wants to reconfirm Android as a wise choice for both users and device-manufactures and plow the market soil for more initiatives.

Lead architect for G+ +Yonatan Zunger just confirmed that two bugs caused the stream to stagnate for many users.
The stream for All Circles as well as specific circles didn´t show new posts and many users complained about a lack of interaction on their posts.
The suspicion was that Google had introduced a new relevance algorithm overruling the users circle settings. A speculation which was fed by a change in the actual circle slider settings. Instead of a slider control over the amount of posts you would see per circle is now done with the choices normal, more, fewer and a check mark ´subscribe´

Excellent idea: With this new combined storage space, you won’t have to worry about how much you’re storing and where. For example, maybe you’re a heavy Gmail user but light on photos, or perhaps you were bumping up against your Drive storage limit but were only using 2 GB in Gmail. Now it doesn’t matter, because you can use your storage the way you want.

Hi, I haven´t programmed in a long time (20 years or so) and want to pick it up for some simple tasks: what would be the best language for my purposes
What I would like to be able to do is write a quick and dirty Chrome and/or Firefox extension for private use, a web crawler to mine some data I´m interested in, a proof of concept casual game on Android and a Windows based application to tie together some hardware like webcams etc to produce an application which can run in a a sort of industrial box for amusement purposes (maybe based on an Arduino board or a basic PC).

Google will serve you personalized results favoring your G+ buddies and an easy click straight to G+ to ´join the discussion´.
Microsoft´s Bing does one better and offers you an immediate comment stream on the subject you were searching for. Limited to Facebook, but that is to be expected after both companies joined forces.

Time Warp: G+ users do in 6 minutes what takes 6 hours on FB
According to a Nielsen study people spent only 6 minutes 47 seconds per month on G+ versus more than six hours on Facebook. If true, that would make G+ users highly effective social media users ;)
The complete figures are not yet available, but the reality will be different. A Google spokesman said to Mashable who reported the story that the figures are "far off" from what the company's internal data show.

YouTube will no longer be free for premium content channels
According to the Financial Times YouTube will get a paywall for quality content channels. Subscriptions will be offered for $2/E1,5 per month to enable channel operators to produce different content, such as TV shows and films, a person familiar with the plan said.
Google was not prepared to confirm this move to the Financial Times, but they do admit that they are “looking into creating a subscription platform
With YouTube actively stimulating new quality channels and even advancing substantial amounts of money to channel startups ($200 million) it´s clear that it won´t be long or they will compete with the likes of NetFlix and Hulu.

Groupon revenue higher than expected despite failure in Europe
Thanks to mobile driving local sales Groupon is doing better than expected, but only in the US.
"We are encouraged by our results, as our local revenues accelerated and our margins improved over the prior quarter," said Eric Lefkofsky, Chairman and co-CEO of Groupon. "We had record mobile performance as 45% of our North American transactions came from mobile in March, and more than 7 million people downloaded our apps in the quarter.”
However international revenue was down a whopping 18% signifying there is some problem scaling globally. No breakdown on the international figures, but it´s no secret Groupon totally fails in Europe in spit of taking over CityDeal, their largest clone and very active in Germany.

Is posting links to your blog the same as spamming?
G+ allows us to post reasonable length posts, but more and more people are going back to the old ´read my blog, here is the link´ style of posting.
In the early beta-phase of G+ this was quite common, but when people noticed you get more traction by posting the full text here, the amount of spammy links went down.
At that time in summer 2011 I argued that linking to your own blog was not really different from linking to other products or services. The content might be very interesting, but what´s the difference with a nice bargain for a new phone or a link to a headhunting service? The intention is always to get reader impressions and usually to monetize them as well.
Nowadays lots of people seem to have gone back to blogging and link dumping on G+ with just a few lines of introduction.

Android FairPhone: good working conditions and materials, lasting value
A Dutch initiative to produce a ´fair´ phone without child labor and a minimal environmental footprint. One of the goals is to make a phone which lasts longer thanks to upgradeable parts which will stimulate a second life in the hands of a new owner.
The first model will run on Android 4.2.2 and go in production if 5000 people actually order it for 325E ($430). Almost 13.000 people registered their interest for a socially conscious phone so it seems an achievable goal.
Fairphone works with LaborVoices, an organisation that helps workers find work with ethical suppliers, and helps companies find and deal with those ethical suppliers to build their gadgets.

We Are Our Brains
A friend shared the image on the left (a brain made from many hands) with me, which reminded me of a post I did back in the early days of #ScienceSunday about the image on the right (a brain made from many whole bodies).
Since many of the folks on G+ now might not have seen that original post, I thought I'd share it again. I'm not sure the origin of the hand-brain (sources welcome), but the body-brain stems from TEDxAmsterdam back in November, 2011.
The Ad agency, WE ARE PI, created an amazing campaign for TEDxAmsterdam. Their concept: "People follow TED to fill their brains with ideas. So, to celebrate TEDxAmsterdam going nationwide with a human nature theme, we are making brains from people."

The suspense and dynamics of the Carl Orff´s Carmina can be a bit much for a nine year old. If your music teacher insist you have to listen to it, what else can daddy do than try out an old rock classic from his youth.
And guess what, it worked! The music teacher will frown upon it, but the whole concept of building up suspension, using dynamics, adding layers of instruments and using strong vocals has been delivered thanks to Child in Time.

A strange species which is best known for the extremely loud noise they make. The North-American variant is exceptional as it has a 17 year cycle of mating. And like all cicadas they sing to get a partner, a single insect can produce up to 120db so if they all pop up the noise is deafening.
The males "sing" a species-specific mating song; like other cicadas, they produce loud sounds using their tymbals. First shot fired with (almost all) plastic gun made with 3D printer
Only the firing pin is metal and yet it survived its first shot on a firing range without exploding in the hand of owner and activist Cody Wilson.
To comply with US weapon laws a piece of metal is inserted in the grip as without it it would not be visible on older style gun detectors. As Cody and his activist group ´Defense Distributed´ want to make the CAD files available online, other makers will skip this obligatory step.
The printer used, a Dimension SST, can be obtained for $8000 and could produce a batch of these (for now) single-shot weapons. However it will be cheaper to make one yourself from hardware store supplies.
The real danger is not in the availability; manuals for producing home made guns have been in circulation for tens of years and buying one is not that difficult even ... more »
