Kalamalka Lake Evening Panorama

This is a panorama of Kalamalka lake in the evening from the lookout near Vernon, BC. Panoramas can be tough to display on social media so this is really more like a thumbnail.  A much larger version can be found on my blog post:

Mount Rainier Reflection for Mountain Monday

This is an older photo I made back in 2010 - one that has been quite popular despite what I consider an annoying technical issue.  While I wish I was able to find an interesting foreground for this shot (the one I had in mind was not accessible that day), there is a technical issue I could have corrected if I'd been paying attention at the time.  Do you see what it is?

Barrow's Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica) - Wildlife Wednesday

A male and female Barrow's Goldeneye swim past the shoreline at Lightning Lake in Manning Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada. A photo from my recent trip to the Okanagan, I had to wait a while for this pair to swim back along the shore as they'd initially swam away as I approached the shore. Evidently I wasn't considered too dangerous, as they swam back in front of me after a few minutes.  A bit of patience often pays off!

Bowen Park Waterfall - Waterfall Wednesday

A waterfall on the Millstone River at Bowen Park in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.  Bowen Park is one of those places that surprised me.  Much like Whatcom Falls Park in Bellingham, Washington - Bowen Park is right in the middle of housing developments, highways, roads and buildings.  I often drive right past parks in urban areas such as this, but was glad I found this one during my trip to Vancouver Island last week.  The Millstone River flows through the park, and there are many waterfalls of various sizes to photograph.  I did not get much in the way of overcast skies, but due to the amount of trees in the area, a late evening shoot worked out just fine.

Mount Shuksan and the Belt of Venus - Mountain Monday

Back in September I went up to the Heather Meadows area of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington State to take a look at the conditions at Artist Point and Kulshan Ridge.  There was still a bit of snow up there in patches (even that late in the Summer), and some of the Lupines are flowering.  I made this photograph of Mount Shuksan from along Kulshan Ridge after the direct sun had disappeared, but this great purple light had appeared in the sky.  I have since learned this is called the Belt of Venus.  I've seen this a few times up there, and I like the mix of colours in this image.  Also a bit easier to photograph with less dynamic range in the scene than in the case of direct sunlight.

The Coast Range - Mountain Monday

As you may have read I am photographing Vancouver Island currently, and consequently have not been around much for #Mountainmonday this week.  Also, I've been trying to get used to an "ergonomic" keyboard at the place I am staying... and wow... it isn't easy.  So there haven't been too many comments this week on MM photos, but I will definitely be going through them and getting out my usual recap, though it may not be as timely as usual.  :)

This is some great evening light on the grasses by the Pitt River in British Columbia.  The Coast Range in the background are never quite at the right angle to the sun for great light on them, but they are always photogenic.

I am current house sitting on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.  It is really nice to pass a scene, take a look at it, and know I have time to go back to it during optimum conditions because I have a whole week here.  Plus,  Vancouver Island is a target rich environment in terms of photographic opportunities. :)

Magnolia Tree in Bloom - Tree Tuesday

I made this photo in Spring 2012 of a Magnolia (Magnolia stellata, I believe) tree in full bloom at Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  Every year is different, and I tried to get some different shots of these in bloom this year, but my timing was off and they were a bit later than I'd anticipated.  I don't think photography would be as interesting if it was always easy right?

Chilliwack Lake and Mount Redoubt - Mountain Monday

This is Chilliwack Lake in Chilliwack Provincial Park in, you guessed it, Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.  The lake is close to the US border, so the jagged peaks (Mount Redoubt and Nodoubt Peak) you see in the background are actually in North Cascades National Park in Washington State, USA.  Always tough to figure out how to label such a photo that straddles international boundaries. :)  This is a reworked version of an older photograph, and I think it is an improvement.

A small sailboat at "Shorts Point" on the shore of Okanagan Lake between Vernon and Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.  I had stopped at Fintry Provincial Park for the waterfall, but also photographed this scene on the shore of Okanagan Lake.  There was some talk I should check out the "lighthouse" but living near the Pacific Ocean has spoiled me (apparently) as to what lighthouse means.  This was really a big post with a light on top of it.  Am glad I went to check it out though - you never know what you'll find along the way.

Black Bear (Ursus americanus) - Wildlife Wednesday

I have not really photographed Black Bears (Ursus americanus) before - last year was the first time I'd seen one. Since then I've seen maybe a dozen, and this is certainly the largest. A friend of mine insists this is a Grizzly, but I just don't see the necessary characteristics to make that determination (I'm new at these species though). I do not know if this is a "large" black bear, but it certainly was not skinny like some of the ones I came across last year.  This one was wolfing down dandelion flowers along the side of the Crowsnest Highway in Manning Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada.  I was well across a 4 lane highway with my 70-200 + 1.4x Extender (I was 53 feet away for this shot).  This felt sufficiently distant enough to get a decent photo and to not disturb the bear.

Eureka Falls in the Skagit Valley of British Columbia - Waterfall Wednesday

I photographed quite a few waterfalls on my recent trip to the Okanagan, but the first one I want to share is actually much closer to home.  On my way back last week I stopped at Eureka Falls near Hope, BC.  Often this falls has low water levels (or too high) but I think the conditions were just about right last week.  I finally was able to make some wide angle shots of this falls without much in the way of foliage in the way.  Silverhope creek is in the foreground, and was at such a violent rate of flow I was not going to get at all close to it!

Today is #mountainmonday!  A lot of great posts already today, and I look forward to seeing the posts this evening.  Sometimes things come together in that a lot of people wind up posting the same mountain or area.  This happens frequently with Yosemite National Park, and often with Mount Shuksan in Washington State.  This week I've seen a lot of photos of Mount Baker, which is also in Washington State.  So... I thought I'd reshare an image I think I last shared in mid 2011 - a panorama of Mount Baker.  This was made from Artist Point in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest quite a few years ago and was a case where I did a lot of things wrong.  I didn't use a tripod, I didn't quite give enough image overlap, and I blew the exposure on a few frames.  I learned a lot from the subsequent post processing wrestling match!  Still, this is a panorama I find pleasing, and wasone of the ... more »

The rocky, sandstone shores of Larrabee State Park just south of Bellingham, Washington are not like the ones I've spent more time on around Vancouver.  It is much nicer to walk on the sandstone - its like built in grip for your shoes!  The water has also eroded the rock surfaces into all sorts of interesting shapes and patterns which makes choosing a composition a bit difficult - there are so many great possibilities!

Spring Tulips in Queen Elizabeth Park

Last week I visited the gardens at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Park for the flowering Cherry trees and the spring Tulips.  I haven't edited all the Cherry tree photos from QE park and Stanley Park, but thought I would share this tulip photo today.  More to come!

Pinnacle Peak in Mount Rainier National Park - Mountain Monday

This is Pinnacle Peak of the Tatoosh Range in Mount Rainier National Park.  I love Rainier but am also quite fond of the Tatoosh Range.  My last trip to Rainier I barely was able to ever see it through the clouds, so I am looking forward to photographing the Tatoosh again sometime later this year.

A new profile photo!  Unlike previous versions my camera elected to make the photograph rather than be the main subject...

Thanks to +Sandra Parlow for helping with some post processing techniques and in her words "to make your face presentable enough to be shown in public".  Okay, she didn't say that (out loud).  :-P

Oh and Google if you are going to harass me EVERY TIME I POST a landscape or nature photo by looking for a face to tag... you couldn't actually find one in this photo?  Annoying.

Mount Blandshard aka the "Golden Ears" for Mountain Monday

For the past few weeks I've shared photos of Mount Cheam which is one of the frequently viewed photos of the Fraser Valley in BC.  This is another peak that is often seen - the "Golden Ears" of the Coast Range.  This photo was made from one of the many blueberry fields in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada.

Eureka Falls for Waterfall Wednesday

This is Eureka Falls just outside Silver Lake Provincial Park in Hope, British Columbia, Canada.  My favourite time to visit that provincial park is in fall, and unfortunately this falls is often dry then. Thinking I might head back up there this spring for a few new photographs!

A Dark Eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) for Wildlife Wednesday

A Dark Eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) eying me suspiciously from a rosebush perch in the snow.  I guess I was standing too close to the feeder and this didn't quite fit with the dinner plans.  :)

Mount Cheam - Mountain Monday

This is a panorama of Mount Cheam, a familiar sight to anyone living or often traveling through the Fraser Valley of British Columbia.  I made this photo by the banks of the Fraser River in Agassiz just after sunset. The time right after sunset is often referred to as “Blue hour” and you can see why. I often like to photograph city buildings in Vancouver at this time as you can still see the outlines of the buildings against the sky (unlike when the sky is darker). I find this is also a great time to photograph mountains – so it is worth hanging around after any potential sunset light or alpenglow has faded. Always wait until the light is completely gone!

Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park Panorama

The weather here in Southwestern British Columbia has turned towards Spring in recent days with temperatures forecast to reach nearly 20°C/68°F this weekend.  It now looks pretty certain I won't see any snow around here, so I'm turning my thoughts and ideas towards Spring imagery.  One of the places I like to visit in Spring is Kalamalka Lake and the area surrounding Vernon, BC in the Thompson Okanagan region.  I got a taste for Balsamroot flowers (seen in the foreground of this photo) last year and plan to chase some more this Spring.

This is Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park just outside of Vernon. This photo was taken last Spring and is one of the destinations I plan on returning to this year.  This photo was a bit more exciting to make than I'd planned on - which you can read about in my blog post:http://p... more »
