You can probably tell by glancing at your inbox: People don't think hard enough about the emails they send.

Here's some data to make the next email you send more effective:

If you haven't seen this yet, it's easily the read of the day. The most interesting part is probably the general conclusion this guy came to after not being online for a full year:

"The internet isn't an individual pursuit, it's something we do with each other. The internet is where people are."

Google+ just got some extra juice.

From +Craig Kanalley: "Users' activity within apps while signed into Google+ will now inform Google search of what's hot, the most popular audio files on SoundCloud, for instance, or the best reviewed movies on Fandango at any given time."

Something cool I found last week: I've always been intrigued by colors, but it was only in the last few years that I started thinking about what they mean and how people respond to them in a marketing/branding context. It's a lot of pressure, picking the colors for your brand. A misstep could mean giving off an impression you didn't at all intend.

Look at the chart at the link and imagine some of those iconic logos with different colors. It changes everything.

Google+ For Job Searches

This is a great post about how to use Google+ in your job search. It also includes a link to a Chrome extension called Do Share, which is probably the best Google+ scheduling tool (of the few available) I've found (in fact, I'm using it right now...).

Time Spent On Social Networks

If you're looking for some quick stats on social media usage, here's a good link to bookmark. It includes a breakdown of what social networks people use (Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, LinkedIn and G+), how much time they spend on them and how much time they spend engaging in other activities (socializing in person, watching TV, etc.). Very interesting!

This is one of the most essential blog posts I've read in a long time. Great insights, such as (emphasis mine):

"One writer, Gene Demby, points out how most of us ... adopt a corporate tone when speaking to our superiors or coworkers. Then a friend or family member calls and we morph into an entirely different — perhaps even seemingly completely opposite — persona. The key, though, is that both voices are still inherently us."

Now apply that to social media. That is why you need someone personable and likable running your social accounts, and it's why you can't fake it.

How do horribly misguided social media posts happen? People forget that social media is a conversation and that posts should be treated as spoken-out-loud sentences in any normal discussion with other human beings.

Curious if any photographers here on G+ have tried out imgembed.

It seems like a great tool for photogs who have their work scraped by idiots who don't get how CC licenses work. As a blogger, though, I'm more than comfortable finding images on Flickr and linking back (or whatever the photographer prefers as credit).

Here's a great example of relevance as it relates to follow counts.

I couldn't care less about the second two suggestions here. 35,432 people and 3,299 people -- all those numbers tell me is that there are a ton of comments and posts that'll be impossible to wade into.

The first suggestion gives me a reason (beyond the fact that I like science) to join the group: People I know, who I've probably interacted with before, like this page. It's more meaningful that three people I know are already part of that community than that a few tens of thousands of randoms make up these other communities.

Good rules for all social media.

"My rules for Twittering are few: I tweet in basic English. I avoid abbreviations and ChatSpell. I go for complete sentences. I try to make my links worth a click. I am not above snark, no matter what I may have written in the past. I tweet my interests, including science and politics, as well as the movies. I try to keep links to stuff on my own site down to around 5 or 10%. I try to think twice before posting."  - Roger Ebert
