water buffalo.
After crossing hmong people, rice farmer, a little pig and milky puddles in the rice terraces, a water buffalo crossed my way on the track. It makes kindof a difference if you see it grazing far away on a field somewhere or just passing an arm length away from you. It's huge!!!
Water buffalos are part of the life in many parts of Asia....but there are hardly any wild water buffalos found. In Vietnam and Laos all of them are domesticated and a big help in cultivating rice. One of the Hmong women that escorted me, told me about a man that has a water buffalo as a blind leader instead of a dog. The very thought of him taking a water buffalo with him when he goes shopping at the next market made me smile.
Unfortunately i couldn't find any english information in the net about that fella. But i came across a german article of a german charity that published an ... more »

flower hmong.
The Hmong people belong to one of the largest ethnic minorities in Vietnam and are mainly living in the mountainious north of the country. The history of the hmong is based on unwritten oral tradition so it's not 100% clear where they have their origin.
The hmong people are distinguished on the clothing and their traditions.
The Black Hmongs are best known for their handicraft and their traditional indigo blue dress. You can see their typical dress in the picture of this previous post of mine:

Flower Hmongs, on the other hand, wear colorful clothes, and it is not difficult to find them during market days. Like in this picture here.

rice farmer.
"Luck is like having a rice dumpling fly into your mouth"
This is a saying i heard during my trip throughsomewhere....can't remember where. It came into my mind while doing the pp of this portrait.
I was aware of knowing how much work it is to cultivate rice. Most of it is very hard physical work. In the flatter south they started using machines to reap...in the highlands they are lucky if they have a water buffalo to plow the soaked ground before they place every single seedling manually.
I was so fascinated by this hard working man that was standing knee deep in the mud....and at the same time i felt like a guilty, spoilt rich tourist. I often have these split emotions. I can't get rid of it. I showed him my camera....asked with hand and feet if it was ok to make a picture of him. Firstly he wasn't thrilled by that idea....but... more »

pig's crossing.
“I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.”
― Winston Churchill
I haven't got much to tell about that picture i'm afraid. I was still doing my little trekking tour through the vienamese highlands in Lao Chai. After getting my goods from the chatty women i enjoyed some silence...and followed my track while it was getting warmer and warmer. I am not the most fittest gal in the world though, so the walk exhausted me a little. But it was a very distracting workout. Beautiful landscape, always something new to discover after the next curve. Like this little pig crossing.
Dunno why but that brightened up my day there even more. I'm simple like that :-)
