When I was exploring the Moravian Windows with my friend & photographer Jana Vanourkova we found this canola filed with a group of trees surrounded by the canola. It was such beautiful landscape. I like the line in the field leading your eye to the trees and the beautiful clouds in the sky.

Last week I toured around the "Moravian Windows", a hilly agricultural area in the eastern edge of the Czech Republic. I just love shooting agricultural fields in a hilly region. I must thank my Czech friend Jana Vanourkova who kindly researched where the best areas are. We had a great day shooting together and were also joined by a friend from Slovakia. I like the lines of this image which keep your eye moving around and the fresh green color of the wheat fields.

I visited Telc, a well preserved medieval town in southern Moravia yesterday.  It was founded in the 13th century and prospered on the trade route between Moravia, Bohemia and Austria.  I like the lake in front of the old town and the beautiful clouds in this photo.  It was a beautiful sight.

Many fruit trees are blossoming now in the Czech Republic. This is an apple tree blooming in the Bohemian countryside. I like the simplicity of this image. The lines of the dirt road lead your eye to the beautiful tree and clouds and the blooming tree announces the season.

I am traveling in the Czech Republic now.  It is spring here and the fresh greens are very beautiful.  This is a small road we found in the Bohemian hill country.  The yellow flowers along the road are dandelions.  I like the beautiful clouds in this image and the S curve of the road leading your eye down to the village in the distance is also very nice.  It is always fun to shoot agricultural scenes in the spring.

Several years ago I visited Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, in May.  This image was taken in Biei which is a hilly agricultural area in central Hokkaido.  I love the leading lines and the graphic quality of this image.  I was shooting at this spot for a long time and this farm worker ignored me as she went about her work.  Springtime is such a great time to make images in agricultural areas.

Kaikoura is a small peninsula on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. Well known for its abundant sea life, many people go on whale watching tours there. It is also a great place to shoot seascapes. On my recent trip I was able to shoot sunrise over the ocean on one side of the peninsula and sunset over the ocean on the other side. This was the nicest sunset I was able to capture. It was such a wonderful evening!

Mt. Rainier is quite close to Seattle, but there are not many days when the mountain is visible from the city. Even when it is clear in the city, there are often clouds hanging over the mountain obstructing the view. So recently when we had a good view of the mountain I decided to shoot the twilight skyline with a view of Mt. Rainier. I was not the only one with this idea and when I arrived at Kerry Park it was so crowded it was hard to find a place to put my tripod. From the many images I shot that night, I like this one with the city lights against a deep blue sky and the mountain clearly visible in the distance.

When I am traveling I always like to get up early to shoot the dawn light. This is Paihia Pier which is where the boat tours to the Bay of Islands start. I was able to climb up to an observation deck to get this view looking down on the pier. Shooting from a higher elevation can often provide an interesting view. I like the pier illuminations reflected in the harbor and the beautiful dawn sky in this image. This was our first trip to the Bay of Islands and I highly recommend visiting if you plan to go to New Zealand.

I like how the traffic trails draw your eye to the downtown skyscrapers and the starbursts around the street lights are also nice.

Kauri Trees are the largest tree tree in New Zealand and can live to be over 1000 years old.  The largest specimens can have a trunk circumference over 20 meters rivaling the girth of Sequoias.  The older trees have trunks with interesting patterns as can be seen in this image.  I like the abstract design of this image.  The moss is also nice adding depth to the tree bark.

This is Waipapa Lighthouse at the far south end of New Zealand's South Island. The low tide had exposed these seaweed covered rocks. It was very slippery walking over these rocks, but I finally found a viewpoint I liked without falling down. I like the interesting patterns in the seaweed in the foreground of this image and the small lighthouse in the background as an added point of interest. I think it is good to have an interesting foreground combined with a point of interest in the background to keep your eye moving around the image.

Spain has some wonderful modern architecture. This is the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia designed by Santiago Calatrava. The egg-shaped building is called L'Hemisferic which houses an IMAX theater, planetarium and laserium. This building is also known as the "Eye of Knowledge" and with the reflection it really does resemble an eye. I love the soft tones in this image which was taken just after sunrise. Recently we had some beautiful clear skies which is unusual for Seattle this time of year. So I took this opportunity to go down and shoot the Seattle waterfront. I found a great view on top of one of the piers where I was able to make this image. I shot this at the edge of the light, about 45 minutes after sunset. I just love the illuminated buildings against a cobalt blue sky. The leading lines are also nice and the new Great Wheel really draws your attention.

The Palouse farm fields in eastern Washington can be a magical place to photograph in the spring. I think it is my favorite time to photograph this iconic landscape. I like the long shadows in this image which accentuate the hilly landscape and of course the new growth is such a beautiful shade of green. It is also nice to have some brown fields mixed in which makes a quilt-like abstract pattern.

In Japan Spring brings the cherry blossoms. This is an old image of Koishikawa Koraku-en garden in Tokyo. It is hard to time the cherry trees because they are only in flower for about 1 week and the time varies every year. This shot was taken when I was living in Tokyo so it was easier to be in the right place at the right time. I like the fresh green leaves and the cherry blossoms reflected in the pond in this image.

This is an old image made when I was still shooting film. It is a shot of sunrise in the Japanese Alps. With the exception of Mt. Fuji the beauty of Japanese mountains is understated and not as dramatic as the American West. I like the silhouettes in this image. The two dead trees make clear that this is a harsh environment at a high altitude and the layers of ridges add depth to the image. I also like the very round sun in the image. Film is better for capturing the sun. If this was shot with a digital camera there would be flare around the sun and it would not be perfectly round.

On my recent trip to San Diego I met up with +Erik Kerstenbeck  and we went to Sunset Cliffs to shoot the sunset. We went down the stairs to the edge of the ocean and the plan was to take some shots of the sun setting over the rocks. But it turned out to be too cloudy and there was no view of the sun at all. However, I thought the rocks that had been eroded away by the ocean just fascinating and this is one of the images shot there. I like the textures and lines in this image. The smooth round rocks at the bottom of the image make a nice contrast against the rough cliff wall.

This is shaga or Japanese wood iris. While most wild irises grow in swampy areas, this plant grows in the forest and blooms in early spring. I found this flower many years ago at the Imperial Palace Garden in Tokyo. I like the almost black background of this image which highlights the flower. The flower was illuminated by a sunbeam and the background was in shadow.

Barcelona is well known for its modernista architecture and the master of this style is Antonio Gaudi. Gaudi designed Park Guell as an upscale housing development at the beginning of the 20th century, but it was never commercially successful. That was lucky for the general public which can now enjoy this wonderful public park looking out over the city of Barcelona. It has become a very poplular destination and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I just love this Gaudi's whimsical style and the mosaic tilework on the terrace is amazing. Recently I licensed this image to Expedia Australia. I hope it entices their customers to visit Barcelona.

It goes without saying that water is rare in the desert so when I saw Barker Dam in Joshua Tree NP I knew it was a very special place . I made this image in the early mourning before the light gets harsh. Luckily it was very calm that day producing a perfect reflection. I love the juxtaposition of this desert landscape with the luxuriant green plants in the water and the deep blue of the sky reflected with the gold desert rocks. It is such a surreal landscape!

Mizubasho is a close relative of skunk cabbage and looks similar except the flower is white instead of yellow. Ryukinka is very similar to our marsh marigold. Both of them are some of the first flowers to bloom in the Japanese mountains. They grow in marshy areas and start blooming before the leaves of the trees come out. Often you can find them blooming while there is still some snow on the ground. I like the profusion of flowers in this image which just shouts springtime in the mountains.

New Zealand has one of the longest coastlines of any country in the world.  I think you could spend months exploring and still not see it all.  This is Hahei Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula which is east of Auckland on the North Island.  I like the beautiful dawn sky reflected in the surf of this image.

The Kiwis love to go hiking or "tramping" as they say and New Zealand has some of the best hiking trails anywhere in the world. This is a view of the Te Warahi Beach Track which leads down to the beach from Cape Reinga. The views were stunning on this short hike and when we got there we had the beach all to ourselves. There were crowds of people at the lighthouse, but the beach was deserted. It has to be one of the most beautiful, unspoiled beaches I have ever seen so it is a mystery to me why so few people hike down to see it. I like the way the trail leads your eye to the distant beach in this image.

This is Slope Point, the southern most point of New Zealand's South Island. There is something alluring about travelling to the edge. Perhaps it is the realization that you cannot go any further (on dry land at least). On my recent trip to NZ I travelled to the northern most tip of the North Island as well and both were well worth the journey. I like the way the land is sticking out into the ocean in this image. It really does feel like you are at the edge of the world.

Nagano is one of only a few Japanese prefectures which has no coastline. But it more than makes up for its lack of a view of the sea with majestic views of the Japanese Alps. This image was taken in early spring when the mizubasho are blooming. Mizubasho are the same plant as our skunk cabbage but the flowers are white instead of yellow. Personally I like mizubasho better than skunk cabbage and the name which alludes to their preference to grow in wet areas is better as well. I like the changing of the seasons in this image. The trees have yet to sprout leaves, but the first spring flowers are blooming and the reflection of the mountain is also very nice.

Devonport is directly across the harbor from Auckland and has a fantastic view of the downtown Auckland skyline. I love to shoot illuminated buildings about 30-40 minutes after sunset to catch the lights of the city against a beautiful twilight sky. Auckland is not such a large city, but the Sky City Tower makes its skyline unique. I like this skyline against the purple hue of the sky in this image.

The cherry trees are blooming in Seattle now. Last weekend we had clear blue skies which is unusual for this time of year. I took this opportunity to go down to the UW campus early Sunday morning and this is one of the images I shot. I like the cherry trees blooming against the beautiful dawn sky with the lights still on and no people in this image. Shortly after this there were so many photographers it became impossible to shoot any more images like this.

When I was planning my New Zealand trip, I knew I wanted to visit Moreaki. I had seen some fabulous images of the Moreaki Boulders and I wanted to see what I could do there. So I spent my last 2 nights on the South Island in Moreaki. I like to spend at least 2 nights in one location because you can never be sure of good conditions on any specific day. As it turned out, the first evening and morning in Moreaki it was overcast so conditions were not good for landscape images. The next evening, however, the weather cleared and I had great conditions from my second evening there. This image was taken the morning of the last day of my trip so I was very happy that I decided to spend 2 nights there. I love the way this dramatic light hit the clouds in this image and the boulders give the foreground an other worldly look. I couldn't have asked for a better end to my trip!

These are Yellow-eyed Penguins or Hoiho greeting each other. The Hoiho raise their chicks together in a nest concealed by bushes. They forage for fish to feed the chicks and can be very playful when they come back to shore and greet their mate. Yellow-eyed penguins are highly endangered and only nest in southern areas of New Zealand. The Hoiho are a NZ icon and their picture is on the NZ $5 bill. Curio Bay is a great place where you can get fairly close to the penguins as they return to their nests in the evening. I like the way these two penguins are greeting each other in this image.

For landscape images it is always important to have an interesting foreground. While I was in the far south of New Zealand's South Island, I went to Waipapa Point before sunrise because I knew I would have an unobstructed view of the sunrise. But I also needed to find a focal point for the foreground. When I saw a large clump of kelp on the rocks, I knew it would make a dramatic foreground. Then all I had to do was to wait for some interesting light. Luckily there were some clouds on the horizon which turned a brilliant shade of red at sunrise. In addition to the coils of kelp in the foreground, I also like the bands of color in this composition.

New Zealand was isolated from other land masses for millions of years so many plants evolved there that are found no where else. Hebe comes in many varieties from small ground plants to small bushes. While they are sometimes sold as garden plants in other countries Hebe only grows in the wild in New Zealand. I love the way their leaves cluster around the branches and the abstract design of the leaves this image.

Springtime in the desert can be beautiful when the conditions are right. I made this image at Josjhua Tree NP several years ago when the desert pincushions and desert dandelions were in full bloom. The tall plants are soaptree yucca. It was a sight to behold.

Whenever I travel, most mornings I try to get up early and shoot at dawn. It is so peaceful being out and about early in the morining and often I am blessed with some beautiful light. This is an image I made at Waipapa Point at the far southern end of New Zealand's South Island. I used a long exposure which smoothed out the waves in the ocean and captured the first light of dawn. I like the minimalist feel of this image.

This is the road to Slope Point, the southern most place on New Zealand's South Island. Slope Point in in the Catlins a very rural region which lies roughly between Inverness and Dunedin. It is a beautiful area off the beaten track. I like the way this road leads your eye directly to the ocean in this image.

On my recent trip to New Zealand I visited the sea lion colony at Surat Bay in the far south of the South Island. There was a family of sea lions on the beach and occassionally a young male sea lion would try to approach. When this happened the bull sea lion would roar to frighten him away. This is an image of the bull sea lion roaring at a young male trying to approach his family. In this image it is easy to see why they are called sea lions. This bull's mane really does resemble a lion. After I took this image, one of the young males approached me on the beach. I thought if I stayed still it would be OK, but in the end he charged me and I had to scramble up to a grassy area. Sea lions can be very aggressive.

Florence is one of my favorite cities and nothing says Florence like Ponte Vecchio. Whenever I visit Europe I love to get up early and wonder around the city or town I happen to be in. On this morning I decided to make some images of this icon and I knew it would look wonderful just after sunrise when the warm early morning light hit the bridge. I was lucky to also get some interesting reflections in the water.
