Stanford online coursework to be available on new open-source platform
Stanford online coursework will be available starting this summer on a new open-source platform, OpenEdX, the university announced today.
Among the first programs to run on the OpenEdX platform will be Stanford's popular "Three Books" summer reading program for incoming Stanford freshmen, along with two public courses now open for registration one using contemporary health topics to teach statistics and another helping K-12 teachers and parents change the way students approach math. Courses from Stanford's Department of Electrical Engineering are among those that will run on the platform beginning this fall.
In April, Stanford and edX, the nonprofit online learning enterprise founded by Harvard and MIT, announced they would collaborate on future development of the edX online... more »

Between the ordinal and the interval: Educational score scales and the "scale-dependence" of analytic results
Date
Thursday, June 6, 2013 - 3:30pm to 5:00pm
Location
101 CERAS Learning Hall
At some point early in our quantitative training, we learn the difference between ordinal scales and interval scales. There is a clear distinction. Ordinal scales, such as rankings, contain only information about order (1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place). Interval scales, such as time and temperature, have equal intervals between successive scale points (1 degree Celsius, 2 degrees Celsius, 3 degrees Celsius). We learn that these differences matter, because the vast majority of statistical analyses, from simple ... more »

7 Things You Should Know About Connected Learning
Higher education is entering a new, evolutionary phase defined by connections between everything and everyone. Connected learning is rooted in the active participation of students, instructors, advisors, and collaborators, offering the ability to connect courses, people, and resources to develop unique personalized learning pathways. This vision of education is of particular interest to those concerned with learner success and the growing role that collaboration plays in all facets of higher education. Connected learning will reshape both business and learning models in higher education, requiring not just the acquisition of knowledge but also an understanding of how to use connections to find answers, seek out mentors and experts, investigate procedures, experiment with possibilities, and develop competencies.

What happens in distributed flips? Investigating students’ interactions with MOOC videos and forums
In our research on distributed flips (executed w/ the assistance of the always excellent Helen Chen), we centered much of our attention on a course offered by Patti Ordonez-Rozo, assistant professor at the University of Puerto Rico, who had her students enroll in Jennifer Widom’s Introduction to Databases MOOC on Stanford’s Class2Go platform. Following the structure of Jennifer’s course, Patti’s students watched videos and completed assignments (online quizzes, programming workbenches) before coming to class. By using Jennifer’s sequenced materials, Patti was able to focus on planning meaningful in-class activities, projects, and assessments.

Making Connections with Scapple | ProfHacker
Amy Cavender
http://literatureandlatte.com/scapple.php
Scapple is a completely free-form editor that lets you get ideas down quickly, move them around (or not), and make connections between them (or not). In short, you can place any item anywhere on the page that you like, and connect it to any other item—or just leave it to stand by itself.
It’s a great tool for mindmapping, though it’s not limited to that.

Project Kaleidoscope
http://www.project-kaleidoscope.org
Kaleidoscope uses open educational resources (OER) to improve student success. The partner institutions work together to:
1. Eliminate textbook cost as a barrier. Faculty members across institutions collaboratively create open course frameworks that use the best existing OER, and reduce required textbook costs to $0.
2. Drive assessment-driven enhancement of open course frameworks. Project resources analyze assessment, activity and success data to guide faculty members in continually improving the effectiveness of the open resources.
3. Create a collaborative community to share learning and investment. The project emphasizes institutional engagement, allowing institutional leaders and faculty members to benefit from sharing and collaboration within and across institutions.

Sarah Harrison, a user experience design veteran at the custom fit online lingerie store True&Co, has developed a methodology for continuously optimizing designs that mixes subjective decision-making with empirical testing.
Harrison breaks what she’s learned about the design process into a four-step loop:
1. Always observe users using the product.
2. Know your metrics. Obsess over them.
3. Befriend your support team.
4. Run A/B tests.
...And then repeat, improving the product continuously as the company grows and the tastes of the customers change.
