Here's one I took about a month ago in Sydney, Australia. It's shot from underneath the Sydney Harbor Bridge, which was built in 1932. For a time, it was the world's widest long span bridge. And until 1967 it was Sydney's tallest structure. :-)

I've arrived back in America -- Hawaii specifically -- and witnessed a spectacular rainbow yesterday evening just before sunset. I wanted to post it up now even though I haven't shared some of my favorite China shots yet. This shot almost didn't happen because raindrops kept getting on my lens. Finally I was able to wipe it clean and snap off a shot before the rainbow disappeared.. Life is good :-)

Notes from Iceland: I've been here about two weeks. What an amazing place. Ice caves (captured in a photo I took here a few days ago), Northern Lights over snow-capped mountains,, shockingly blue glacier chunks on black sand beaches, waterfalls everywhere you turn, quaint houses, hip cities (Reykjavik / Akureyri), and endless fields of snow -- so much snow I feel like I'm looking at Hoth from the Empire Strikes Back. I love this place.

When I arrived in the airport, all the rental car offices were closed. I finally found a way to call the place I'd made a reservation with and they came and picked me up... They drove me out to this warehouse filled with strange mechanical devices, lumber and a small desk. The rental car employee apologized saying they were just getting up and running. I thought I'd entered some crazy outpost at the end of the world with no facilities... In fact,... more »

They drove me out to this warehouse filled with strange mechanical devices, lumber and a small desk. The rental car employee apologized saying they were just getting up and running. I thought I'd entered some crazy outpost at the end of the world with no facilities... In fact, I soon learned that Iceland's main towns are as cosmopolitan and convenient as anyplace I've been.

The weather has been insane. The day I arrived, 20 meters per second winds (we also experienced 30 mps, technically they call this a Hurricane) are knocking me around as I try to get in my car. Snow and rain is blowing everywhere. On the first night the road to the hotel I'd booked in Vik had been closed, so I drove to Reykjavik instead.. at first I'm terrified of driving in the snow and worried about snow tires and the chains they're also demanding you put on your car in America. Within a few days, I'm doing 80KM an hour during near blizzard conditions. You get used to it!

It's so different than anything I've experienced growing up in California, I'm in awe of this place. I'm truly smitten, and decided to stay through Christmas and New Years Eve. I never had any appreciation for snow or cold weather places, but with my (relatively) new love for photography, I find the opportunities here overwhelming. I've been happily shooting away each day (all 4 hours of them- the sun rises at 11 and sets at 3 during this time of year!) and on many nights when the skies are clear.

Strange Iceland Facts:

* I've had the best hamburger I've had in years at an N1 gas station.
* Skalmold, "folk-metal" based on ancient Icelandic sagas is on sale everywhere like it's Miley Cyrus
* You can get your car unstuck from the snow with a children's toy shovel and a car mat
* You don't really need to take tours to see things, except the ice caves
* Lots of guys are named "Thor" (even my ice cave guide pictured here was named Thor)
* You will see some of the biggest monster truck wheels you've ever seen in your life
* It's hard to find anything open in the rural towns after 6:00pm
* Hotel desks in rural areas are unstaffed at night (Eek! Car sleeping is no fun)
* The ring road is awesome, you can get to almost all the big sites by following this one road
* There is no entry fee for all the natural wonders, parks, etc.
* People seem helpful and not trying to rip you off

I have not learned a word of Icelandic, or I'd say Farewell, thank you in Icelandic. Everyone speaks English... So Farewell for now,  thank you :) ___

I'm thinking of heading to Europe at the end of October and staying through January. Can anyone recommend the best places to photograph during these months (i.e. spectacular fall color displays (or am I too late)). Have I missed the best time for Croatia's fall colors, for example? Or how about the most likely places to capture some nice snowfall? I'm flexible and will go just about anywhere from Iceland to Russia. +Max Huijgen I figured your network might have some suggestions :)

I'm headed back to Beijing in a few weeks. I can't believe its been a year since I was last there. On our last trip we stopped by this crazy restaurant and took some photos. It was gigantic and empty, and I began wondering how the restaurant sustains itself... I'd actually been to the restaurant before and it was fairly empty too. I'm guessing if you rent one of the many rooms for your private party, they charge enough to keep the lights on from that single meal. Anyway, having it devoid of people really helps to set the mood. This place is just crazy inside. The interior was designed by non-other than Phillippe Starck.

Manhattan Beach Pier, in California. I've been out here several times trying to get a good sky and photograph of the place. The sunsets are usually good in this location, but I'd never quite seen the "wow" moment I was looking for until a few days ago. Thank you mother nature :-)

The funny thing is I was not out there planning to shoot. I just happened to be in the neighborhood picking up my "new" (its from 1984) "classic" (I'm not sure everyone would agree) Vanagon. To me its a very beachy car, and I happened to have the Beach Boys on the stereo driving right past the pier. Luckily I had my tripod and camera with me... All in all, it was a very summer-sy moment. :-)

Trying to stir things up a bit. Despite the number of films and TV shows that have been shot here, I couldn't find a composition that was interesting on its own in this beautiful spot (Alabama Hills / Lone Pine, CA). The sky was looking like it was gonna be good for sunset, so we decided to stir things up a bit. You Star Trek geeks might appreciate this location. Can any trekkies say what's been filmed here? A storybook moment out in Canyonlands, Utah. I gave this photo more of a painting-quality, it felt like such a timeless moment that day. This was my first visit to the park. It's an incredible place and I've returned once since then. I know I'll go again and again... so much to see here. Utah has some amazing scenery!

Back in Las Vegas and finally got up for an early morning sunrise view of Red Rock Canyon out here.  It's a beautiful place, and, I know, not what most people think of when they think Vegas, but you can drive out here in just 20 minutes... A good break from the Casinos. I recommend you visit next time you're in Vegas.

I'm in Cambodia now. Last night I may have witnessed (and photographed) something never before seen in the storied history of the 900 year old temple of Angkor Wat!  I'm being dramatic, yes :-)

It began with my desire to take a sunrise photo. Its my first time in Cambodia, and I'd yet to visit the famous temple at dawn. I got up at 4:30am to be in place for the  sunrise. I was up so early, there were still stars in the sky. My trusty Tuk Tuk man Heng greeted me and we began the 30 minute drive out to the temple through the old town of Siem Reap.

As we drew closer, we both noticed strange lights shooting up from the general direction of the temple and into the starry night sky. Heng has lived here since he was 11 years old and told me he'd never seen these lights. I speculated that they must be practice/preparation for some kind of show they're planning at the temple.

When we arrived outside the temple itself, the number of people there took me by surprise. Loads of tourists were walking across the bridge that crosses the moat, their flashlights and headlamps looking like tiny fireflies off in the distance.  Instead of following everyone in. I stopped at the exterior moat and began to take long exposure photos for several minutes.  Here's one of them.

To the naked eye, the lights looked white and not terribly interesting, so I was quite surprised to see what showed up in my camera after leaving the shutter open for awhile. (Over on the left you can barely make out the tourists walking across the bridge.)

I've yet to see any other photos like this of the ancient temple, but as of last night, there must be a bunch in existence. I wonder if anyone got photos like this up close to the temple itself? (In my photo, the temple is that tiny structure in the middle that looks like a Disney castle...)

Anyway, hope you get a chance to visit someday. I'm loving the people and place. Cambodia has been an unexpected delight.___

I've spent a nice few weeks in Thailand, going all over the country... from the beaches in the south to the country's highest mountain in the north. Once you leave Bangkok, it's a very relaxed, laid back place. I've not been able to get many photos I'm happy with, but here's one. This shot is from Ko Phi Phi Leh, a small, uninhabited island with a few pristine beaches. It might look familiar to you from the movie "The Beach" which was filmed very close to here.

A major typhoon is touching down in the Philippines right now. I just left the country a few days ago and took this photo on the flight out. The Philippines has faced so much natural disaster... While there I visited the earthquake damage in Bohol. Over 300,000 people were displaced from their homes just a few weeks ago after the 7.1 quake. In Manila I stayed with a family who's home had been flooded multiple times over the years. In the worst flood, they lost their most treasured possessions. The Typhoon today (Haiyan/Yolanda) is the strongest storm on Earth this year and one of the largest tropical cyclones ever recorded in terms of wind speed (235mph). Catastrophic damage is expected. Fortunately, they think it's blowing by so fast that the flooding won't be as bad as the wind damage. For info on donations, safety and volunteer work, check the Red Cross:... more »

I've been in the Philippines for about a week now. I didn't expect Internet to be so hard to come by, but I ended up driving up North of Manila -- Baguio, Banaue, Bontoc, Sagada.  The rice terraces were the standout for me. I never made it to the place where they're supposed to be the most beautiful. This shot was just from the road on the way to Banaue from Bontoc. We got lucky with the timing and the distinctly purple hue of the sunset.... So nice :)

In just 2 hours I'll be on a plane to South East Asia.... So looking forward to this trip. I'm hoping to drift a bit... I want to visit many countries, but have no particular agenda. I love being in rural areas and slowing down of the pace of life. If things go as planned, I'll get Internet access and will share photos and thoughts about the trip. Here's a shot I took last October in an out-of-the-way part of China. It was one of my favorites of the trip and I still like it a year later... (Which is rare with me and photos!)   So excited :-)

I spent a few days on Kauai, the "Garden Isle" in Hawaii. A really beautiful place and one that I'll return to again and again to try and capture it's beauty... This is from a rainy/cloudy afternoon, when the sun peaked through for just a minute. Of course, even when it rains in Hawaii it's still warm and people enjoy the outdoors. It never really gets cold here. :-)

Burning Man 2012 - That's the man off in the distance. I sat here for awhile with my camera and was taking long exposures as there was barely any discernible light left from the sun... Luckily, while I was waiting, some cyclists with the perfect color lights rode into my shot and into the distance and I got a long exposure with light trails. :-)

From last year's Burning Man. I don't know these people; they didn't pose for me... That's one thing that's so wonderful about Burning Man, all these wonderful moments happen left and right... You don't have to set anything up. The opportunities are endless. I'm packing up my RV right now, getting ready to go to this year's Burn. I like to arrive a little late after the chaos of entry has subsided somewhat :-)

A scene from Burning Man 2012. This was an awesome moment that is both combination sandstorm (blowing down below) and some very unusual clouds (up above, obviously hehe).  I've been working on getting my stuff together to go on Tuesday.. I'm planning to arrive a day late and avoid the wait on the way in. Are you going?

Have you heard about the boy in China who was born with blue eyes and can see in the dark? "Nong's night vision has sparked interest around the world by vision scientists, evolutionary biologists, and genetic engineers. And this is good news for science as we may eventually be able to use genetic technologies to deliberately create such a condition ourselves."

If they'll be offering night-vision as a for-purchase genetic mutation, I'll sign up :-)

On the top of the Empire State Building, New York, New York. Last Night I watched the movie Oblivion, and thought to myself "I've been up there!" (the Empire State lookout / observatory plays an important part in the movie). Here's a photo I took from that location on Thanksgiving last year. :-)

Was in Vegas a few nights ago and there were several fires on the horizon, courtesy of lightning during extreme heat (118 degrees!). The smoke from one of the fires covered the sun, turned it red and made this beautiful sky.

The "SuperMoon" in Hawaii. I got some shots without clouds, but this one I liked more... It really seems much brighter than it does larger. Makes a big difference in night shots.

Here's another shot from my recent Beijing/China trip. This one was taken atop the Beijing TV tower and facing some brilliantly lit buildings.   On the right bottom corner here, the dark area is a construction zone. I can't wait to see how this area changes as new buildings are completed. The last shot I shared here was taken from the same location, but looking in the opposite direction.  Note: I uploaded this one in full resolution, try zooming in and looking at the detail. Pretty nifty :)

Here's a shot from Beijing, China, taken a few weeks ago during my visit. I wasn't able to post much there because G+ was blocked. As many of you who have been to Beijing may attest, the skies are quite muggy and polluted there. I only saw a blue colored sky once in 10 days. Though I'm not completely certain, this appears to be a nuclear power plant, so what's coming out of those towers would be steam. Maybe that's one step to cleaning up the air in Beijing.

Does anyone know how to access other photo albums besides the camera roll when using the IPad on Google+? This is about the fifth time I've thought "I'm going to post a photo to google+" and then find I can't, because the photo I want to post is in an album I created. Then after about 5 weeks I'll forget you can't do it, and I try again and doh! Im stuck again. I also can't find a way to choose photos from my Android phone, I can only select photos I've already uploaded to G+ or take a photo. This omission makes me think I'm really missing something / just being brain dead :-)

Android Experts?  Hey Folks - I'm looking into a new phone here soon. I don't mind waiting if something else is coming out in the next 1-3 months. Right now I have a Galaxy SIII, which I'm not super happy with because of the changes to the OS made by Samsung. Before that, I had a Nexus phone whichI loved, and, as I understood it, was the OS the way Google intended it. What I'm looking for is the fastest phone, with the largest screen that has a straight Android OS (by straight I mean, no modifications by the phone manufacturer). What phone is that? Or is a new one coming out? (On a side issue, the camera does matter to me as well... But I'd probably give up the best camera quality for the first 3 requirements.)

I'm enjoying this new G+ layout. Here's another Tall Photo I hadn't shared before. Taken in Sydney, Australia in January.  This dramatic sunset was going off and I was scrambling trying to find the best spot to take a photo. Fun times!

Tomorrow I'm headed to South Korea for two nights. Does anyone have any suggestions on cool buildings or landscapes to photograph for my two quick nights there in Seoul?

Trying out the new Tall Photos in G+!  I took this one in France, at Mt. St Michel. +Trey Ratcliff and I spent some time in this wonderful place, and this was one of my favorite photos from the adventure. I never shared it here on G+ because the old format favored landscape-wide photos. What do yo think? :)

A lot of people ask me about my workflow - how I process photos and that sort of thing. Lightroom 4 is a big part of it, and the new Lightroom 5 (currently in Beta) will be as well. I find Lightroom to be so much easier than Photoshop (though I use that too!) On Wednesday, the Lightroom product team will be hosting a hangout where we can all ask questions and hear what's going on with the new product. My photographer friends
+Dallas Nagata White and +Ed White are going to be acting as the Google+ community representatives and help field the questions from the user base.  Don't miss it, it's Wednesday at 11:00am PST. Here's the event link:

The London Tower Bridge. I shot this on a cold day in November last year. It's really an amazing site and fascinating when you consider construction started in 1886. I've never seen the drawbidge portion go up and down. Apparently it's a rare event these days :-)

I wonder where the closest place to see stars like this is outside of LA? Joshua Tree? Not really sure.  I've not been shooting for a few days and am itching to shoot something epic :-)

It feels nice to be back in Los Angeles using my desktop computer with a large screen and updated versions of my photo software. One of the joys of geekdom, I suppose. As I was backing up my files from the trip and updating everything, I pulled up this photo of the Manhattan Beach pier I took over a year ago when I was just getting started with photography. It was really fun to process an old shot on my big screen, and using an actual mouse. Such  a nice zen morning, and I vivdly remember the feeling of being at this pier back on this special day. I'm happy :-)

I'm back in Los Angeles... looking forward to a night of rest in my own bed. Here's another shot from Japan. I spent a few days in Kyoto on this trip and was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a real-life Geisha slipping inside a traditional inn on the streets of Gion. Not my typical kind of shot, but it's probably still one of my favorites from the trip.

Spent the final night in Japan at the Robot Restaurant (see +Trey Ratcliff's post) and wandering around Kabukicho shooting street scenes. It's pretty wild there, but I caught this more peaceful moment as things were shutting down very late. This shop owner was putting away his lanterns for the night.
The Japan adventure is over for now. Jumping on a flight to Los Angeles in a few hours, but I'll definitely return to Japan soon. I love it here.

I've been in Japan for almost a month now, and my BFF +Trey Ratcliff joined me 3 days ago. Last night we went out shooting with +Takahiro Yamamoto and encountered this GIANT GUNDAM, an amazing 7-story tall robot, which even has its own themed cafe here in Tokyo. The cafe was closed, so we didn't get to eat GUNDAM-shaped cookies or anything cool like that. This morning we are about up to head towards Mt. Fuji with some friends we made at Google+. I'm excited to get out of the city and see a little bit of the countryside today. :-) We should have no trouble since our new Google+ friend +Negoro Kaori also works on Google Maps here in Japan. (Btw, if you are using an iPad with Apple's map app, be sure to download the Google Maps app. Apple Maps is horrible in Japan, and almost everywhere else outside of the US!) Update: Can anyone tell us about the origin of the GUNDAM?

I always find country-by-country health care comparisons to be intriguing. I've been in Japan for 3 weeks and got sick a few days ago. Today I went to a hospital and was delighted with the experience and service.

First, I found a place within a few miles of my hotel that advertised English speaking physicians (quick Google search got me that),

Second, when I entered the hospital it felt more like a nice hotel or lounge than a place for sick people. There was even a live piano player in the main lobby / waiting area.

Third, I easily found the receptionist, told them my symptoms and was assigned a department and doctor within minutes. The forms/info were minimal. They required a 30,000 Yen Deposit (about $300 US).

Fourth, the doctor called me in within seconds of walking across the main lobby to his area. He had completely finished with me in minutes and I was guided back to reception where I paid my total bill of $11,740 Yen (the $30,000 deposit was credited back to my card). That's $118 for seing a doctor in a hospital and getting 3 kinds of medicine (antiobiotics for a bronchitis-like symptoms).

Finally and fifth, I walked another 20 feet to sit and wait for my prescription which took about 30 minutes. The whole experience was about 90 minutes, I never had to leave the main lobby, climb stairs, or walk around a maze-like facility. Overall, I was totally impressed completely satisfied with the service and price. Keep in mind I had no insurance card, and didn't even show a passport.

How does this compare to your experience in your own country or other countries you've visited? ___

The Meiji Shrine in Tokyo's Yoyogi Park is a wonderful place to visit. If you go there just at sunrise, there's almost no one there. Just a few temple attendants sweeping the leaves. I've been in Japan 3 weeks now, I gotta say I love this place. Here's a photo from my first morning, when my sleep schedule was messed up and I actually got up before sunrise. :-) The shrine itself is a large, impressive structure. This is just a little building outside where you can scoop up water with a ladle to clean your hands and mouth before entering the main shrine.

Washington DC at Sunrise About two weeks ago I was in Washington DC laying on the ground, shooting this sunrise over the reflecting pool and the Washington Monument. When I was there I'd heard talk about the blooming of the Cherry Blossom trees, but I was there too early for that. Well, now I'm in Japan and the Blossoms are in full bloom... I haven't gotten a great photo of them yet. Still trying :-)

Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo The Shibuya crossing is famous for the tidal wave of pedestrians that flood across the street in every direction. It's really awesome to be down there in the mix.

This photo was taken around midnite when I arrived in Japan last night.  I was super tired, but I got this shot just before I went to sleep.  I plan to be here for a month, maybe longer. I've been to Japan a few times, but that was back in 2007 when I was working and not taking photos, so I've actually seen very little of the city.

Can anyone recommend photo spots around the Tokyo area? Or other photographers who are living here/shoot here a lot. I'd like to see what the locals have captured. What's the best place to go up in a building and get a skyline shots of the city? In a week or so I'll probably venture out to Osaka, Kyoto and other more scenic areas. Soany... more »

Just spent a week road-trippin in the American South - mostly in Georgia and North Carolina. Before I arrived I'd Googled locations and was hoping to  get a cool photo of a swamp. I never quite did find what I imagined in my head, but I found this dried up and drained swamp on my last day in Augusta, GA. I woke up with a few hours before my flight and the sky looked intense. The clouds were ominous and strange and I thought to myself, "Dang, no photos today." Normally I look for happy blue skies and I won't even shoot in these conditions, but it turns out the muted and somber tones were perfect for this location.

Here's one I took about a month ago in Sydney, Australia. It's shot from underneath the Sydney Harbor Bridge, which was built in 1932. For a time, it was the world's widest long span bridge. And until 1967 it was Sydney's tallest structure. :-)

Shot this one in Oahu, Hawaii too. The moon cast an unusual color light because of the volcanic fog coming from the Big Island. That's my friend +John Hook holding still for 30 seconds while I captured this long exposure. We were camping on the beach at Bellows ... Awesome time :-)
