martin shervington739,480You know I spend most of my time on Google+, right?Well, increasingly I've been valuing the role of using Twitter alongside - the cross platform connections make a huge difference to building relationships. So, I thought you all may like to dig a little deeper and there is no one better to ask in than +Mark Schaefer on this one as he is just bringing out a new edition to his book. He has a solid business view of social as well. So, hope to see you on Wednesday; and we will be taking questions so please ask away!About the book:The book was initially created to solve a problem. The most common question am I asked is, "Can you help me understand Twitter?"  That is just not something that can be addressed over a cup of coffee! So I wrote this book, first to help my students, but it caught on has loyal fans all around the world.  The Tao of Twitter teaches you the practical MINDSET for success, not just a bunch of theoretical or technical suggestions. If you follow the strategy in the book, I know it can work for you because I have seen it impact hundreds of lives. The Tao of Twitter is beyond a book. It's a movement. Welcome to a global community that is unleashing the power of this amazing communication platform to connect to the world and drive new business benefits in wonderful and unexpected ways! The Tao of Twitter! SEOWiSE898Framing and Agenda Setting: Defining how we see the worldThis is an episode of The Paradigm Shift you won't want to miss. Why? Because framing defines the way we see our world. It defines the way we further communicate and the way we do business.Note: If you decide to share this or comment in other platforms...Please use the hashtag #Paradigmshiftweb . That way we can track it (paradigm shift alone has been used way too much for us to keep track).Agenda setting and framingI will explain how the two are inextricably intertwined and really why they are so crucial to understanding the rest of communication. Though generally spoken of in terms of political communication and the news, it needs to be understood that we cannot communicate without framing and agenda setting. In terms of businessI'm sure you can already see how this is applicable to doing business today, but +David Amerland will take it one step further and explain how framing and semantics are intertwined, and how that changes the way we do business. If we better understand the frames in which we live and the frames in which others view the world, can we be more successful in the digital age? Further, are we less likely to get stuck in our own agenda or worse, an agenda set by others?Tune in Thursday July 17th for what I think will be an incredible discussion!Warning: I have already been asked to extend this particular episode so David and I agreed that this conversation may go for 45 minutes rather than the originally planned half hour.Start loading in your thoughts and questions now!Thank you +todd l lebeauc for the awesome graphics!Framing: Whose Semantic Frame Are You Living In?2014-07-17 18:00:0060

SEOWiSE898The Paradigm ShiftThe Business of Communicating in a Semantic WebNew: We're trying to track activity so if you share this event anywhere else please add #paradigmshift !I am thrilled to announce my newest show with +David Amerland. Through our interactions on his brilliant +David Amerland's Sunday Read, David and I have developed clear connections between communication concepts I regularly use in Communication Studies and the new Semantic Web that businesses are learning to function in.The show break downIn a half hour David and I will...I will briefly explain a communication concept. For our first show we are starting really basic. I will explain the two-step flow of communication: Its history, the basic model and components within that model, and how we generally study it within communication.David will then take the concept of the two-step flow of communication and apply it to his expertise: Business today. David will explain how the two-step flow of communication functions within the semantic web and why its important for businesses to consider. Finally, we will address any questions that you all raise for us, so bring your thinking caps!A big thank you to +todd l lebeauc for the banner! The Paradigm Shift - The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web2014-06-19 18:00:0089

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,079,446We're live on Google Hangouts! Watch the digital teach-in here: http://youtu.be/yb1sYK8aGGISubmit questions via Twitter using the hashtag #404Day  On April 4th, EFF is partnering with the Center for Civic Media at MIT and the National Coalition Against Censorship to bring attention to the long-standing problem of Internet censorship in public libraries and schools for 404 Day. Join us on Friday, April 4th from 12pm-1pm PST for a digital teach-in with some of the top researchers and librarians working to analyze and push back against the use of Internet filters on library computers. Mark your calendars, and check back soon for more information about how you can tune-in.Speakers:Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Deputy Director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom.Chris Peterson, a research affiliate at the Center for Civic Media at the MIT Media Lab.Sarah Houghton, Director for the San Rafael Public Library in Northern California.Moderator: April Glaser, activist at the Electronic Frontier FoundationWe also invite librarians and concerned bloggers across the country to blog about Internet filtering in libraries on 404 Day to raise awareness and share stories of free speech infringing censorship in schools and libraries. Want to blog about it? Write an email to april@eff.org to let us know.About Children's Internet Protection Act & Censorship in LibrariesOver 10 years ago, Congress passed the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), a bill that brought new levels of Internet censorship to libraries across the country. The law is supposed to encourage public libraries and schools to filter child pornography and obscene or “harmful to minors” images from the library’s Internet connection in exchange for continued federal funding. Unfortunately, aggressive interpretations of this law have resulted in extensive and unnecessary censorship in our cherished public libraries, often because libraries go beyond the legal requirements of CIPA when implementing content filters. As a result, students and library patrons across the country are routinely and unnecessarily blocked from accessing constitutionally protected websites.404 Day: A Day of Action Against Censorship in Libraries2014-04-04 21:00:0067

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,079,446We invite you to join us for a live Google Hangout on Tuesday October 1st at 2 PM Pacific / 5 PM Eastern to learn more about the TPP's copyright provisions and their impact on users, their effect on U.S. copyright law, and how we can work together to protect our access to knowledge, digital rights, and internet freedom. There will also be time for Q & A.Even though we successfully killed SOPA and ACTA, special interests groups continue to pour millions of lobbying dollars to push policies that would further restrict our rights to knowledge. Unable to pass such measures through our legislative process, they’re using secretive, non-democratic tactics to fold harsher copyright restrictions and enforcement measures into a larger trade agreement. The latest and biggest threat on this front is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a multinational trade agreement being negotiated between the United States and 11 other Asia-Pacific countries.Speakers:* Lori Wallach: Director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch* Krista Cox, Staff attorney at Knowledge Ecology International (KEI)* Maira Sutton, Global Policy Analyst at EFF* Parker Higgins, Activist at EFFTPP, Copyright, and Users' Rights: Google Hangout with EFF, KEI, and Public Citizen2013-10-01 23:00:00105

Susanne Ramharter74,504Am Freitag, dem 16.8. kommt +Michael Lee Johnson nach Wien. Michael unternimmt soeben dabei wildes (wahnsinniges?)

The Event time will translate to your local time (unless you are on Mobile) Start time reference is 7pm PT/10pm ET USA.There is a chance we may be using the Questions App {Beta - Field Trial} during the show, if so, we will leave a link to guide you there if you want to see it in action during the show.Plus 1's now are truly recommendations. Many of us used Plus 1's for other things like "Got it" or "I see this" - a form of acknowledgement, or other "social kindness" but with the new normal, some of this is changing.Leave your questions, concerns, etc. in the comments... we'll try to address them in the live show. Reinventors Network789,670Here's a really hard problem that Larry Lessig is not sure how to solve: "Let's assume we've got a fundamentally corrupt government, in the precise sense that the dependence upon "funders" corrupts the intended dependence upon "the people alone," and that too many within that system are too deeply connected to it to push for its change. That means any effective movement for change has got to come from the outside. How would a grassroots movement in the Internet Age create the pressure such a change would require? How would the people who brought the Internet to scale tackle this problem?"Joining Larry in his effort is a veritable who's who of internet know-how, the folks who have built & scaled networks for change: internet pioneer Tim O'Reilly, Change.org Founder Ben Rattray, Moveon.org Executive Director Anna Galland, VC Brad Burnham, Executive Producer of TED Media June Cohen, Bram Cohen, creator of BitTorrent, and Markos Moulitsas, Founder of Daily Kos. Reinvent Money in Politics2013-07-11 20:00:00195

We'll be cooking easy and inexpensive Korean food!                                    **********************On Sunday's show, Michelle will be making Mandu Two Ways - (Mandoo)She’ll be making fried dumplings and dumpling soup.  It’s the perfect Korean comfort food to start off the wintry New Year!  Here is the recipe: http://bit.ly/S7hvOnWatch Michelle LIVE on this Event's page, on +Larry Fournillier's Profile Page or on www.hangoutnetworks.com #hoa   #hangoutsonair   #michellelikoreankitchen   #koreanrecipes  Michelle Li's Korean Kitchen - Mandu : Episode 01 - 6:00PM(EST)2013-01-07 00:30:0059

Samantha Villenave1,065,085+Art+Talk #16, an interview with +Kurt Ankeny, hosted by myself and +Lena Levin .I asked Kurt for a bio. What he gave me are these beautiful words."I like to describe myself as an autodidact, but that's not really true at all. If anything, I'm a bibliodidact. Some of the works most important to my formation were How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema and Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Those two were my lifeline for many critical years of development. In fact, I had given away my copy of Anatomy Lessons,  when I started recognizing images from it in the paintings I was looking at. I hadn't realized how deeply those images penetrated. So I had to buy myself a replacement copy. Here's a problem I have: all writing about art tends to circumvent the art itself. I'm not saying one shouldn't write about art, but it's deceptive to cement into prose a reaction to a piece that depends wholly on the time, circumstances, education, experience, and readiness of the individual viewer looking at it and reacting or responding. So, what you have a is a snapshot of a very, very narrow point where two individuals connected for a moment in time.So those qualms aside, I'm a relatively new painter. I've only been painting for about seven years. Four of them what I would consider "full-time". Painting, as most of us who practice with any determination and ambition know, is a very slow burn. Cy Twombly told Jenny Saville to try and remain ignored for as long as possible. And that is good advice as long as one can manage it. Because painting, especially since the modernist movement, is a vast ocean of possibilities and it takes many canvases to get your bearings.I guess that's my long-winded way of saying that I really don't know what I'm doing yet. I know, I know. One isn't supposed to undercut one's brand and reputation with such nonsense and honesty. "I don't know what I'm doing" does not mean "I don't know where I'm going." I do have plans, I have grand ideas and ambitions. It's just that there's a lot of white space on the map between where I stand now and Mount Accomplishment. I think that the fissure between abstraction and figuration is an obvious point of interest. Today's painters are swarming on that likeArt+Talk interview with painter Kurt Ankeny2012-11-04 20:00:0023

Ғ ΜіснæL Sŧuŧz4,508I rarely do this...In fact, I haven't done a circle share in over a year, and I've never shared this one. But... It's #AmbienTime , and the thing about the folks in this circle: they've all paid their dues with respect to my #AmbienTime  moments. These are the people who, with one or two exceptions, have known me the longest here on G+. They also happen to be the list of people who are either overly medicated, or underly medicated, because they still haven't uncircled me yet, even after all this time. I keep checking, but so far none of these people has gotten tired of my crap enough to go through the effort yet. I don't have the heart to tell them that this suffering won't erase all their past misdeeds and sins, and won't get them into heaven.I spend 99% of my G+ time in this one circle. And one of the people here was insane enough to actually marry me.It's a very diverse group, about as diverse as you can get. Each, though, is wonderfully broken, like magnificent shattered stained-glass murals, each reflects the same sun that alights upon us all, but in uniquely amazing ways that, with the passage of the hours and the seasons, brings a new dazzling display every time I see them online. If these are the only people you ever circle on G+, you will be hooked on G+ for life. And it's proof-positive that quality kicks the crap out of quantity every day of the week. This is my little way of saying, "Thank you" to all of you guys for putting up with me for the last few years. And I take serious pride in knowing that I have the rockin'est circle on G+.+Sque Morgan , up there at the 1:00 spot was my very first friend here. We don't talk much these days, I miss that, but we've both been going through some crap these last few months. I think she's responsible for my meeting about half this circle, people like +Eric Johnson, for example. And I know that after Sque (like a few days) came +Karen Schumacher  and +Debra Dayton , and then +Alvin Stearns and then +Shawn Holster, who I was sure was going to defrock me last month when he announced his annual spring circle cleaning...+Darryl Mouzone I met through an experiment. I decided to add every "suggestion" that G+ made for one week, and he was the only one that made in to this circle, which made the whole exercise a totally worth-while thing to do.2014-09-23 03:17:43431706

A response to +Chris Abraham  's article about Google+
I just read your article on +Social Media Today   and I like your analogy with Ellis Island - I think you've got a good point about Google+ being 'staging area'.  I've been here since day two of the Beta and have watched and applauded as some (now former) newbies like +martin shervington +Denis Labelle , +Jaana Nyström   +David Amerland  , +John Kellden , +Giselle Minoli  , +Meg Tufano   and many, many others, none of whom I knew, have experimented with this platform, and in some cases become 'Superstars'.

For these people, as well as myself, this truly is a kind of staging area or playground, where we can find our voices (and our feet) and, if we have something of value to share and engage (play nice) with others, get the attention we deserve.

… you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone …

Today’s painting is Young Girl Singing Into a Mirror, by Jean-Etienne Liotard from the 18th Century. Liotard was born in 1702 in Switzerland and was appreciated for his work, mostly portraits and domestic scenes such as this one.

However, the choice of this painting for today’s post is personal rather than ‘artistic’.  With two obvious differences, namely the gilt edging on the mirror and the double string of pearls, this could be me. Oh yes, one more difference: when I open my mouth, almost no sound comes out, which many probably consider a blessing.

A frozen vocal chord has left me whispering, speaking low and very quietly and gasping for breath every few words. But this is not a ‘pity me’ post. I am optimistic that things will get better with training. Maybe someday I’ll even be able to sing - though up till now, I was always asked not to.

My point is made in the title, as Joni Mitchell sang in Big Yellow Taxi: you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone …

But is that really true?

Of course not. On some level, we are always aware of what we’ve got. We are aware of our possessions, position and status, relationships and even our bodies and their functions. But we take most of these things for granted, they are normal, always there, not consciously noticed, …. until we lose them.

In a way, we stumble through life blindly. Blind to our surroundings, oblivious of what matters to the people around us, and unaware even or ourselves, our bodies and minds, their functioning and needs.

We hustle through the days to make that next goal, get the sale, meet the deadline, write the post, or buy the next cool thing. And we ignore the clouds lit by the sun on the commute to/from work, the co-worker who is overwhelmed with a task, the significant other who needs to get something of their chest, the child that wants to play, and our bodies that need rest, or exercise, or to be touched.

We are always focused on the next thing to do, to make, or to get, and so little aware of how and what is now.

The one-word antidote to this is mindfulness. For those who feel that is a bit too woo-woo, replace it with the word awareness.  To be fully aware in and of the moment. To note what we see by actively looking, what we hear by actively listening, noting the taste, smell, and feeling what is right now.

Turning off our busy minds is not easy, to just ‘be’ is a bit like asking someone to be spontaneous.  But I find it useful to, just for a moment, focus on ’wanting nothing’. Really. Don’t try to achieve anything, not even awareness, just focus on not wanting anything and you may just notice how your body feels, as well as your surroundings, and you may just be surprised.

Is this somewhat trite? Of course it is. There is nothing metaphysical or requiring great intelligence about being aware. The message is many thousands of years old and transmitted in many religions as well as in modern psychology. I’m not blazing new trails here.

But the thing is: what seems simplistic to grasp intellectually is often very difficult to put into practice. As the Buddhists say many things are ‘simple but not easy’.

So, when you talk today, be a little bit aware of your voice, how it sounds, how it feels.  Do you speak loudly or softly, are you smiling as you speak, or are your teeth clenched, you get the idea.

It’s your voice, appreciate it, use it wisely, and tread lightly

☆Good Morning Google+ ☆ your daily story about art: 10.17

Today we remember the Venetian painter Bernardo Bellotto, better known as Canaletto, who died on Octoer 17th in 1780.  This painting, his View of Vienna seen from the Belvedere, is typical of his style and work.

We see a ‘wide angle’ view of the city, with a deep horizon, in cool colors and with sharp precision. The use of strong diagonals captures the interest and keeps the scene from becoming boring. Canaletto presents his views as if on a stage, but one where the scenery is of primary, and the actors of secondary importance.

Even most of the buildings shown here can still be seen, because thankfully, Vienna has strict zoning laws about the height of buildings within the city center.

Have a wonderful day, find something to preserve for yourself, and tread lightly

If someone hands you garbage ...
Probably tl/dr
In the last weeks I met a number of wonderful people (patients) in a hospital. They were there for many different reasons. We would meet around the ashtray in the garden (yes, I know!) and share not only the hidden location of the coffee automaton, but also personal stories. It is fascinating how such a context will completely change the rules of intimacy among strangers, but that is a story for another day.

One day another patient was very upset about something another patient had done and I shared this story with her:

A very renowned and respected Buddhist teacher gave a talk about the usual things: compassion, non-violence (even in thoughts and speech), etc.  After the talk, a few people went up to him and said that it was all very well for him to preach compassion, he was a well respected figure and was surrounded by... more »

In the last weeks I met a number of wonderful people (patients) in a hospital. They were there for many different reasons.

After the talk, a few people went up to him and said that it was all very well for him to preach compassion, he was a well respected figure and was surrounded by devoted followers, not slimy co-workers, bullies, nasty bosses, etc. How could they be expected to apply his teachings? His answer was (as so often with Buddhist teachers) incredibly simple: he asked them, If someone tries to hand you a bag of shit garbage, and you don't take it, who has it then?

Now I heard this story almost 10 years ago and loved it ... with my brain. It has taken almost as long to actually live it fairly regularly. It's always one thing to know something cognitively, and actually live it, isn't it ;-)
Edit: thanks to +Bodhipaksa Dharmacari for the link to the original story here: http://goo.gl/Yeexh

Imagine my surprise when the story made the rounds. It seems that the image of someone actually handing over physical garbage while they make nasty, aggressive or hurtful remarks (sometimes unknowingly) helped these people to to realize that they were letting others determine their own reactions and thus the rest of the conversation - if there even was one.

The fact is, everything a person presents has to do primarily with ... themselves, not with their conversational partner.

It was interesting to hear various stories and (attempt to) help analyze how they often instinctively accepted and dealt with the garbage bags that were tossed to them in various situations. Ironically, and without intending to, I actually provided an example one day:

We were sitting in the lovely garden under glorious sunshine (would that August had been so) and a woman who had been strolling with her friend almost stormed up to me and said "you're wearing a neck-brace!" I said "yes". Quite unnecessarily, she said "I have one too. And mine is much better" (mine is the standard you get in the hospital). I was somewhat amused and responded that she was fortunate to which she replied that it had been custom made for her by some man named Siggi.  By now I was hard put not to laugh, could not suppress a grin and asked her if it was her aim to make me jealous. She just repeated that hers was better and not the simple standard.

To be fair, later on she came back when I was alone and volunteered her room number, and told me she would be taking it off and I was welcome to try it on so that maybe I could convince Siggi to make one for me as well.

Now, yes, this was a tiny little baggy of garbage, not a big sack. But, nevertheless, initially it was garbage. My friends were very irritated at her rudeness and amazed that I did not "get into it" with her. But really, why bother? I'm OK with my brace and am happy that she is fine with hers. If she needed to point out that hers was custom made then that was her thing, and had nothing to do with me whatsoever.

In the following days the story of the garbage bags was often a topic of discussion and I believe that it may have been of some use to the people I met. If it is of use to you as well, that would make me happy, if not, then maybe you've already "gotten it" and that is fine as well.

So do tread lightly around the garbage, even if it's your own.

Today is the birthday of the great Roman Poet Virgil, born on October 15th in 70BC. Virgil is best known for his Aeneid, the epic poem which, using the figure of Aeneas, a prototype of Roman manhood to describe the foundation of the first Roman settlement.

At the end of the sixth book of the epic, Aeneas travels through the underworld and meets many of the future Roman heroes, waiting to be born.  This may be the reason that  the figure of Virgil is used to accompany Dante through the circles of Hell in the Divine Comedy. Here is one scene from Canto X of the Divine Comedy by William Blake, showing Dante conversing with Farinata and Calvalcante, with Virgil watching at the left.

Being the irreverent, postmodern person I am, and not infused with the proper medieval spirituality to appreciate this as it was surely meant, I was struck with the absurdity of the situation. Here is the dead Farinata, the Florentine leader of the Ghibellines, who had dealt defeat to the Guelph ancestors or Dante, insulting Dante .... and Dante lets himself get involved in trading furious insults and arguments!

I mean really! Who cares if a ghost insults my ancestors? If there is an issue, let the fight it out among themselves in the otherworld. But it can never affect me.

Farinata was obviously still completely caught up in his very worldly beliefs and hatreds and made a gift of his own issues to Dante, who gladly accepted and then all hell broke loose. What if Dante had just ignored it? But that story comes later today, until then,

Eureka! After way too many weeks of cold, fog, and rain, a day spent in Piran, Slowenia on the Adriatic coast in wonderful, warm and sunny weather was just what the doctor ordered. This is one of a number of impromptu sculptures on the rocks that protect the walk around town.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 08.25
Today we remember Thomas Moran, the American landscape painter of the Hudson River School, who died on August 25th in 1926. Born in England in 1837, his family emigrated to the US in 1844. His training began as an engraver, but he soon left to train informally with artists both in the US and Europe.

He was greatly impressed with, and influenced by, J.M.W. Turner, whose influence can be seen in Moran's work. This is his painting of the Green River, Wyoming showing the stunning light and coloring of the area.

Your "what a surprise" post for the day
There are people who simply do not participate in any kind of activity without the proper gear and costume. I am at the other end of the spectrum, old t-shirts, jeans or an old pair of shorts are my standard for everything from yard work, bicycle or motorcycle riding, yoga, cross-country skiing, etc. I've even been caught chasing balls on our tennis court in the linen sun dress I happened to be wearing at the time.

So I'm always very impressed and slightly embarrassed by all those people with the (semi-)professional outfits - but obviously not enough to actually do anything about it. How nice to know that not all of the expensive clothing and gear is used to actually practice: ;-)

Haring is probably more similar to Rizzi than Warhol is, which comes as no surprise since, as Rizzi said, Haring was one of his idols - as was Warhol, Paul Klee and Bugs Bunny. But while Haring's work has an element of aggression - all those clearly outlined, active figures in stark surrounings, Rizzi's work shows the lighter, fun influence of Bugs Bunny as well.

His work is full of light, humor and, yes, "good will". He spent most of his life in NYC, and his work shows different aspects of the city, but always the positive sides. The spirit of multiculturalism, art, chaos and the fascination with the many, many inhabitants. If nothing else, his work is a wonderful testament to what a city can be.

It is no wonder that one of his favorite maxims was “The past is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift.“ and that is the perfect summation of a Sunday.

Make the most of your gift today, and tread lightly.

As balance to yesterday's doom and gloom, today's painting is the Drama of Light, by the American artist Hanson Puthuff, who was born on August 21st in 1875.

Like many American artists, Puthoff began his career as a commercial artist, producing signs, posters and even illustrations for billboards, before resigning to concentrate on his own work in 1926. He is best known for his landscapes, mostly of California and the western US.

There is something soothing about pleasant images that evoke memories and associations, and he captured both the light and the ambiance of the landscapes he portrayed.

That was the opening paragraph of my post from last year (here: http://goo.gl/hAaksF ) and it fits perfectly again today. The weather is once again grey, cool and rather gloomy, with the added element of fog. Just as my brain has been full of fog for the last weeks (or, as Denny Crane would call it 'mad-cow' ;-)

Kubin's painting Ahnung is a perfect way to re-animate this series of posts. Not only does it capture the mood of the day, but also the atmosphere of the last weeks.  'Ahnung' is one of those German words with many meanings, it can mean an idea, suspicion, feeling, or sense about something else, but, as with the painting, there is no certain knowledge, nothing is clear, only a fuzzy sensing of what could, maybe be present.

Make sure your day has some light and clarity, and tread lightly

Amor, a rather chubby child, sits on a rock, a floating red shawl coyly covering his vital parts and holds an arrow. I chose this painting not only because it's lovely, but also because it shows just the kind of weather we've been having for the last few weeks, short bursts of sunshine, lots of clouds and rain - this could be from where I live, both the clouds and the scernery.  But a succession of house-guests is keeping me busy, and I apologize for my lapses in posting.

Here we have his painting of the Immaculate Conception. At first glance, one has to ask, what does this have to do with the story as we know it. Fact is, during Vasari's lifetime in the 16th century, there was not yet a codex or rules of iconography as to how this 'event' was to be portrayed. It was left up to the artist to display his own ideas (or those of his patron) about the Immaculate Conception.

Vasari chose not to try and show the event itself, but rather it's meaning. We see the Virgin, floating in the sky, surrounded by Cherubim (yes, these are Cherubim, not Putti), everything is sweet and light. But oh, down below. There are Adam and Eve, along with other evil-doers, in the murky, dark and writhing shadows, chained to the tree, from which rises the serpent. A serpent with a human torso, dark wings, and horns. Incidentally, the Virgin's foot is on his forehead, showing her dominance. The two angels on either side of her hold an inscription, the translation of which reads: Those condemned by the sin of Eve are saved by the grace of Mary.

And there you have it, Woman as cause of both the Fall and the Redemption of Man. A theme of polarization that shows up again and again in Art. <sigh>

Have a day with less drama than this painting does, and tread lightly

Today is the birthday of one of my favorite artists, Vincent van Gogh, who was born on March 30th in 1853.

There are over 7 million entries under his name to be found on Google, and over one million with the word "biography" added.  There is nothing that I could conceivably add to the mountains of information available about Van Gogh, whose untimely death at the age of only 37 deprived the world of such a magnificent artist.

What can one even try to say about an artist who created psychological masterpieces like the Potato Eaters, grandiose visions of the cosmos such as Starry Night, and could make views of  Tree Roots or a Patch of Grass so fascinating?

I won't even try.

Just one tip, as you go through these paintings, you may want to pay attention to what this man can do with yellow, the different shades, energies and meanings that he elicits from what we just call yellow.

Enjoy the pictures, have a lovely Sunday and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.28
We begin the week by celebrating the birthday of one of Art's premier Bad Boys, Marcel Duchamp, the French artist who was born on July 28th in 1887.

Duchamp cared nothing for established forms or theories of art. He is probably the artist who helped to develop the idea of conceptual art, and thus moving far, far away from accepted academic practices. One could say that, with Duchamp, art took a major step away from the primarily visual and narrative context, an moved into a much more intellectual one. (Whether we like it, or not)

But here is one of his more 'conservative' pieces, from his time and experiments with cubism, called King and Queen Surrounded by Swift Nudes.

Yesterday's weather was perfect for taking a field trip. We drove to the small village of Metnitz in Carinthia and had a look at their Dance of Death Museum

The concept of the Danse Macabre, came from Catholicism. The earliest known example is from the Cemetary of the Church of the Holy Innocents in Paris, completed around 1424-25. The Dance of Death became a popular theme in religious art, in part because of the very real existential threats to life such as repeated famines, the Hundred Years War, and the Black Plague, which ravaged Europe  in the 14th Century, causing between 75 and 200 Million deaths.

The theme of the Dance of Death was communicated via plays (like the early mystery plays), poetry and paintings.  The point of these works was in part to combat vanity, by showing that death ultimately comes to everyone, whether they are rich or poor, strong or weak.

That is why these panels show Death coming to claim all kinds of different people, the Pope, the Emperor, Knights, Ladies, Farmers, Craftsmen etc. Below the scenes are texts, in which Death has a short dialogue with each person, who resignedly accept their fates.

Our fate was to get caught in an absolute downpour on our way home, but at least we were in the car and not on the motorcycle.

Hope both your weather and your day is friendly, and tread lightly

I've Been Waiting To Share This With You ALL For a LONG Time! It is THE Single Most Important Thing I've Ever Undertaken, and I Hope You Will LOVE It!

What you are about too see is a culmination of my entire life. Not simply my life's work, but its purpose.
Much is explained in the video you are about to see, which is a +TEDx Talk I was #blessed   to be invited to give in #Manhattan at +TEDxFultonStreet  on the very same stage that Inside The Actors Studio is filmed. ( A pretty rad experience to hang in the same green room that everyone from Martin Scorsese to Julia Roberts spent time in at one point or another. (I may or may not have sorta turned that room into my own private Green-room, as it wasn't actually being used... But hey.. I was about to step on the world stage of TEDx ...and I needed a lil meditation time.. a lil me time. :p

But the place isn't important, the only thing of importance is that this video and the work you are about to see is the culmination of a life long dream

I mean that in no small way.. literally a lifelong dream, for when I was a little kid we..my friends and I would sit around after being blown away by Elvis, KISS, and other things and people... scientists...inventors, all of which made us say WOW! We would fantasize about how we too could make other people feel something amazing when we grew up!

I've always wanted to move people at their core, to illicit change, foster understanding and compassion, and to do so through something I've been in love with since I can remember! Photography. But it had to be something unique.. something undeniably 'WOW" Something worthy of paying 'homage' to all those who'd gone before me and made things that made me say that one magical word..."wow!"

I finally figured out a way to do so....and to do so by taking the things I love most in life: sharing, expression, and music and by combining them with my greatest love of all: photography, I'd finally create something that has never been done before.. something that would celebrate not only music and photography but would celebrate the amazing feelings, the incredible possibilities, the joy, the sheer evaporation of feelings of loneliness or being misunderstood that can only be realized through the art of sharing.

The Video Explains it Mostly... But There is More Id Like YOU to Know:

The premise is simple... photograph people who've achieved great things, celebrities from all walks of life, musicians, actors, inventors, scientists, athletes... and ask them to share ONE song they are absolutely passionate about, perhaps it got them through cancer ( Id like to stop right here to simply say #FUC %CANCER ) or perhaps its the song that pressed them on through the toughest of times, or the song they finally launched their career to.. maybe this song was playing in the background.. maybe its a song that reminds them of a simple time..
We sit down, and talk about it for a few moments.. then.. the magic happens. We both strap on headphones, and we listen to it together, as I photograph them.

As I'm photographing them, I have a second camera in sync with the first one, that is pointed at the CD player... it is recording each time I make an image of the subject. The times-tamp from the song ( photographed with that second camera) then becomes the title of the image, along with the subjects name, and title of the song.  This will allow the viewer to connect to the exact moment that the image was made.. the exact instance the emotion struck home. And to connect in a way never before done, and hopefully in a manner that feels special.. magical.. and .. truly makes the person feel a part of whats being shared.

This is an important project for me, because in trying to make it come together... and here I feel its the perfect time to give a hardy heart felt show of appreciation for Guns N Rose*s very own... the venerable incredible.. sheer virtuoso of a musical genius.. and I say that with no small amount of exaggeration.. +Ron Thal A.K.A *"Bumblefoot" , without whose understanding and sheer tireless devotion to the day of shooting.. and his belief in me.. this would never have happened.. and I may have easily given up. Much love brother. Much love!

It is an important project for me.. because I want kids to understand.. someone out there gets it.. they may have been there too.. or hey.. they may just share the same goofy passion for an odd song. I want people to feel connected.. to one another.. to art.. to music..

We are after-all, all juts vibrations of energy. And music.. is a vibration of sound, photography a vibration of light. SO is it ANY surprise how powerful a change we can experience.. when we share these vibrations? It's through this sharing.. through this #SixBeatsOfSeparation   ... that I hope to bring people together to vibrate at a frequency that makes us all realize, how truly in harmony..we.. as human beings can, should and were absolutely BORN.. TO be.

Three is much more to come...and Ill need your help and support!!!
If I've moved you...intrigued you...or entertained you...I ask you to please...spread the word.

Coming this summer will be a website where stories of these shoots will be fully documented, videos and photographs will live.. people will write in their own stories about music and how its moved them.. and MOST importantly..
Prints and posters will be available for purchase. Which I'm very proud to say will be provided through the amazingly skilled people at NYC's own +Fine Print NYC! Who have partnered up with me as they believe in the project, and being the awesome New Yorkers they are have helped me bring this to fruition!
Each one sold.. will have its proceeded donated to the charity of each celebrity subjects choice...and that is the greatest gift of all!

I can NOT wait to share this journey with you all and am SO SO happy to have the opportunity to have you here TO share with!

Namaste

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.25
Today we celebrate the birthday of the American artist Maxfield Parrish, who was born on July 25th in 1870.  This is his Dream Castle in the Sky, painted in 1908, about 10 years after Mucha painted his Seasons. While the style is different, we can still recognize the influence of Art Nouveau, in the romanticized treatment.

Sorry for being so short, a bout with the dentist this morning has left me a bit woozy, but, for Information about Parrish, see the post from last year here: http://goo.gl/ri1xxQ

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.24
So much landscape, and with grizzly stories at that, cries out for something completely different. By a wonderful coincidence, today is the birthday of the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, who was born on July 24th in 1860.

Mucha worked in Vienna, Paris and many of the Slavic countries, and was a major factor in the development of Art Nouveau. He worked both as a painter and in all kinds of decorative arts, creating a poster for one of Sarah Bernhard's plays that she liked so much she gave Mucha a six year contract for more.

This is his The Seasons from 1897. Like most of his works, we see lovely young women, in somewhat neo-classical robes, surrounded by flowers and plants of the seasons. They look like they would be fun to know, even Winter to have a certain sense of humor and happiness.

Rubens, before and after
once in a while, I'll get a question about the colors (or lack of them) in a post about an art work. As these before and after pictures of Rubens' Don Calderón on Horseback  show, the original paintings were often quite different.

I've chosen this work, not only because of it's similarities and differences to yesterday's work by Hopper, but also because of the background story.  If you ever watched the series I, Claudius you will understand and remember that Tiberius was the adopted son of Augustus, who succeeded him to the throne, but then moved from Rome to Capri.  The reasons for his move were complex, and depending on whom you believe, quite scandalous.

It was said that Tiberius had a taste for children and sexual excesses. Supposedly the 'Rock of Tiberius' was one from which either uncooperative or no longer pleasing catamites were thrown to their deaths.  It was also thought that Tiberius was poisoned by his own successor, the mad Caligula.  But, although 'documented' by the Roman writers Suetonius and Tacitus, most scholars believe that the stories which proved Tiberius' (evil) character were exaggerated after his death, a practice that is still carried on today.

Would that we had some sun as in the painting, I hope you do, and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.20
This Sunday we remember the Italian Mannerist painter Federico Zuccaro, who died on July 20th in 1609.  Interestingly, during his own life time, Zuccaro was probably the most famous living artist throughout Europe, while today he is often considered to be a minor player.

This is his Pan and Cupid, which was painted around 1600. Before you sigh and think 'just another old painting', think about what the painting is (or could be) telling us. This is clearly a reference to the rather earthy Pan, known as the God of the wild, whether that is landscapes, woods, animals, shepherds, and anything earthy and rustic. He was known as a kind of nasty joker, who would accost travelers and cause them great fear. In fact, the word Panic comes from his name. Pan had the lower body of a goat, and, in accordance with his companions the satyrs and earthy aspects, was often associated with sexuality - as a lustful, purely physical act.

And then we have Cupid, also called Amor, or Eros, representing both the aspect of Love vs. raw sexuality, and the aspect of the 'civilization' of the Greek Gods vs. the rustic, primitive and urge-driven pagan spirit Pan.  The Getty, where the painting is today, even sees a triumph of the supernatural (religion) over the pagan and primitive beliefs.

Just please don't ask me what the flying figure with the horn is, I have no idea.

Enjoy your Sunday and tread lightly

There can never be too much Beethoven
and the Egmont Overture is one of my favorites. Here is another version, directed by the wonderful Hanroncourt ( +mydogskips2 how do you like this one?)

There is a story to this piece, as Harnoncourt says in his introduction, Beethoven did not have any kind of commission or contract for this work, he wrote it because of his admiration for Goethe, and is a musical summary of Goethe's play of the same name.

from wikipedia:
In Egmont, Goethe relates the fight of Count Egmont (1522-1568) against the despotic Duke of Alba. Egmont is a famous Dutch warrior and the Duke of Alba represents the Spanish invader. Though under threat of arrest, Egmont refuses to run away and give up his ideal of liberty. Imprisoned and abandoned because of the cowardice of his people, and despite the desperate efforts of his mistress Klärchen, he is sentenced to death.

Thus, faced with her failure and despair, Klärchen puts an end to her life. The play ends on the hero's last call to fight for independence. His death as a martyr appears as a victory against oppression.

Egmont is a political manifesto in which Egmont's craving for justice and national liberty is opposed to the despotic authority of the Duke of Alba. It is also a drama of destiny in which the Flemish nobleman, with fatalism, accepts the dire consequences of his straightforwardness and honesty.

... and that comes across so well.

"Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt was born 152 years ago.
This is ‘Hope II’ painted in 1907-8, from MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art: http://goo.gl/1d5pXM
“In this painting, a pregnant woman bows her head and closes her eyes, as if praying for the safety of her child. Peeping out from behind her stomach is a death's head, sign of the danger she faces. At her feet, three women with bowed heads raise their hands, presumably also in prayer—although their solemnity might also imply mourning, as if they foresaw the child's fate. (...) Here, birth, death, and the sensuality of the living exist side by side suspended in equilibrium.”

Very likely, these early works, full of symbolism and allegories, were a major influence on Klimt, who would change his style, but remain true to the symbolic content of his work throughout his career.

Most of his work centered on the subject of women and was more or less blatantly erotic. In the late 19th century, full of hypocrisy about sexuality, this was a definite break with taboos and his work was heavily criticized. Not only were the women he portrayed overtly sexual, but he took the symbolist 'genre' or 'type' of female as seductress to new extremes, which did not sit well with the inhibited and prude bourgeoisie.

Klimt was given a commission to paint works for the University of Vienna and produced 3 paintings, Philosophy, Jurisprudence and Medicine, which were all rejected as being unacceptable. They were considered too arousing, different and pornographic for display. As a response to the antagonism that much of his work encountered, he painted this, his To My Critics, which later became known as the Goldfish.

We see four nymphs, and the head of a huge Goldfish, just behind the nymph at the bottom, whose back is turned to the viewer and whose facial expression is a wonderful mixture of amusement and provocation.

My all your provocations be just as fun, and tread lightly

Today's story breaks my heart: it's about a site of World Heritage importance in Afghanistan, which is set to be destroyed as of the beginning of next year.
Note: this is a long one, it starts as a story and ends as a rant.

This is Mes Aynak, an ancient Buddhist city about 130 miles from Kabul. The site was left pretty undisturbed for over 2000 years, until it's discovery in 1963. Even then, while there was the inevitable looting and even use by Taliban and Al-Qaeda, there remain untold treasures and discoveries.

But unfortunately, it seems that the site is also very rich in Copper, and the Chinese have a contract with the Afghan government to mine the location, which will destroy all remains of this truly unique piece of human history.  A campaign in 2012 brought about a delay, while a rescue dig was organized, which still continues today, under immense time constraints.  To properly do the job, archaeologists would need about another 20 years, but they only have until the end of 2014. Thereafter, the Chinese will move in and that will be that.

So, goodbye to another irreplaceable site, that could bring understanding about all our history, the site is along the Silk Road and could continue to provide many insights to the civilization at the time not only in Afghanistan.

As a child, I was amazed and fascinated by a visit to the Buddhas in Bamiyan, and will never forget the experience of climbing up and onto the head of the large Buddha there. I cried when the Taliban destroyed them. And I am afraid that I will cry again and often about the destruction of #MesAynak.

For a while, in 2012 and 2013 we heard quite a bit about the going's on. But things have become very quiet about Mes Aynak. Even a few hours searching on Google did not bring up more than a handful of articles from this year. Why is that?

Why is Mes Aynak not a #worldheritagesite  ?
Why does the +UNESCO do absolutely nothing to save this amazing piece of human history?
Why is the #media  not reporting on the destruction to come?
Why are there no organizations/governments or movements taking action?
Why the absolute hell does no one even try?!?

Is it because it's so far away? Because it's 'only the Afghans'? Because it's 'only Buddhist art'? Or because we're all afraid of offending the Chinese? Or because it seems hopeless, so why bother?

+Brent Huffman , a documentary film maker, is finishing (or has finished) a film about Mes Aynak. Check out his youtube channel for more.

I'm going to ping some of the people in my "People who give a damn" circle below, maybe you have some ideas of how we could put this wonderful platform to good use, to at least raise our voices in protest.

Thanks for reading to the end, and, even if, like this case, difficult, do try to tread lightly

8 Hugs a Day
lest you believe that I am a pessimistic old drone, here is a wonderful TED Talk by Paul Zak, in which he talks about Empathy, Trust, Morality and ... oxycotin.

8 Hugs a Day
lest you believe that I am a pessimistic old drone, here is a wonderful TED Talk by Paul Zak, in which he talks about Empathy, Trust, Morality and ... oxycotin.

This may go some way to explaining some of the effects that were at the center of the FB fiasco a few weeks or so. As Zak points out, increased levels of Oxytocin can be determined from the use of social media.

But best of all, Zak says that "8 Hugs a Day" will have a noticeable positive effect as well.

So, consider yourself hugged and tread lightly ;-)

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.10
Today we remember the Dutch painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag, who died on July 10th in 1915. Mesdag came to painting fairly late, having worked in his father's banking business until the age of 35. He specialized in maritime scenes and particularly the area around Scheveningen, such as here, in his Sunset at Scheveningen - Fisher Boats at Anchor.

He also created what is probably one of the largest panoramas ever, see post here: http://goo.gl/VoNDcM

Huxley, who wrote the Brave New World, seems to have foreseen many of the possibilities that not only chemical substances, but our technology is now making this a reality.

+Gideon Rosenblatt has an article about some of these issues as related to the FB actions here: http://www.the-vital-edge.com/facebook-experiment/ and a very good followup post here: http://goo.gl/vYhVBh, in which he talks about the ethical aspects, as mentioned by +danah boyd in a great piece here: http://goo.gl/vrufU7.

My personal concerns center on the sense of a false reality that FB (as well as other platforms) can create. FB is presenting happy posts, cutting edge search algorithms offer users results based on past choices, even Google+ will let people in your circles fade away if you don't communicate with them regularly enough. And that's not even considering the less than benign manipulations being done with twitter as reports about the ISIS campaigns show.

All of this is a kind of manipulation of reality. It's hard not to envision a future where even newer developments such as windows on German trains whispering advertisements to people who rest their heads against them, (see here: http://goo.gl/LmiFQz) or ever more technological gadgets turn us into Borg-like zombies.

I realize that, to many here, I will sound like some kind of a Luddite, or conspiracy nut. But, as FB and others show, to a certain degree this is already happening. Personally, I have no idea how the advances of applied technology can be 'limited' to uses that will be benign, do you?

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.09
Wishing a very Happy Birthday to David Hockney, who was born on July 9th in 1937. I have always loved the originality and clarity of Hockney's work, whether it is in his Pop-Art paintings or his later collages.

Since it is summer, I think the Bigger Splash is appropriate for today, even if I'm sitting here in a long-sleeved sweater.

May at least your day have sunshine and warmth, and tread lightly

Irreplaceable pieces of history and human heritage at risk

Apart from the unimaginable human suffering taking place in Syria and Iraq, there is evidence that ISIS will destroy or steal some of the most important historical and artistic artifacts of human civilization.

It doesn't matter whether the destruction comes due to the antediluvian beliefs of the religious fanatics as it did with the destruction of the Buddhas in Afghanistan, or the cynical looting and selling to finance the delusions of grandeur and the Caliphate.  Either way, Civilization is about to lose some of it's most valuable treasures.

"Painter Marc Chagall was born on July 6th, 1887: a good day to enjoy his monumental work on the ceiling of Paris's Palais Garnier, available in ultra-high resolution at http://goo.gl/Nf9gKI
Over three days and nights, five technicians worked in rotation to transcribe the minutest detail of the 240m2 pictorial composition. It is the largest work available on the site in #Gigapixel resolution, a technical challenge given the height at which it is located (18 metres), the lighting conditions in the theatre, and the curved, circular nature of the ceiling!

Don’t forget to zoom in and to click on the Details to see different views of the ceiling http://goo.gl/Nf9gKI #artstech "___More Chagall

Every Manager/Leader should keep this in mind:
"Inside Every Cynical Person, there is a Disappointed Idealist"
George Carlin

One of the biggest gripes of many managers or self styled leaders is the apathy and disengagement of employees. Countless are the number of times that I heard that either I, or a peer or staff member who did not completely drink the corporate cool-aid at work was being cynical,  non-supportive, or not taking one for the team.

What most of these managers don't (want to?) realize, is that the vast majority of employees would love to be truly engaged. One of the greatest sources of stress and thus the increasing wave of burn-out cases is frustration at work. Frustration, from lack of meaningful work, a lack of perceived purpose, and repeated evidence of futility in trying to bring about effective change is one of the main sources of this... more »

Frustration, from lack of meaningful work, a lack of perceived purpose, and repeated evidence of futility in trying to bring about effective change is one of the main sources of this stress.

So dear managers, before you gripe about the disengagement and cynicism of employees again, think about the many projects that were started under the title of 'change', 'innovation', 'empowerment' etc., or any of those other, cool sounding buzz words. And think about how many of those programs were then aborted, or left to die a quiet death, because another downsizing program made them obsolete.

Employees are smart, and quick to see whether the talk is being walked. When the difference between the talk and the walk is too obvious, or occurs too often, the disappointed idealists become cynical.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.07
I'm still full of the 'Wedding Spirit', so it is a double pleasure that today is the birthday of the great Marc Chagall, who was born on July 7th in 1887.

As a Jew from Belarusse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chagall's life was both full of danger, threats to his survival and great inspiration and wonderful works during his time in Paris as well as later on. His work is sometimes called surreal, full of symbolism and above all, remembered for his brilliant use of colors, all of which are obvious here, in his Bridal Pair with the Eiffel Tower.

Happy Birthday +martin shervington !
Meeting you and watching you develop here on Google+ has been one of the highlights and a joy. I wish you a wonderful day full of celebration and much success in the future.

This is the entrance to the Gaudi Park in Barcelona. It reminded me a bit of the atmosphere we often find here, bursting with people who come to look around, enjoy the surroundings and offerings. There was a sense of companionship, even among all the strangers, many smiles and good cheer.

For anyone reading this post who sometimes feels a bit overwhelmed by the multitudes and and looking for a few tips and hints about using Google+, whether for your own pleasure or for business: +martin shervington is someone you definitely want to circle!

Dear Googleverse!
Today I am a Mother of the Bride!
While our dress is a bit more modern, the preparations and the wedding itself will almost be as elaborate as shown here, in Konstantine Makovsky's Preparing for the Wedding.

May your day be as full of joy as mine is sure to be, and tread lightly

For these people, as well as myself, this truly is a kind of staging area or playground, where we can find our voices (and our feet) and, if we have something of value to share and engage (play nice) with others, get the attention we deserve.

Some of your criticism of the abilities of the platform are certainly valid, but looking at your stream, I wonder whether you truly 'get' the difference between Google+ and other platforms. Facebook is for contacting people you know, or for getting and keeping fans. Google+ is different. Here, the glue that binds us is made up of topics and issues and true exchanges, or, as my friend +John Kellden  says: 'conversations'.

Unless you are a well-known celebrity, gaining and keeping 'followers' on Google+ takes time and dedication. Throwing out a post or two and waiting to see what happens, especially if you don't bother with hashtags, just isn't going to cut it.

The way that most of us who are regulars here have built up followings and gotten to know others is, by interacting with others first. Commenting, plussing and sharing others' content is what this place is all about.

That may make Google+ a bit daunting for some users, but those who have understood it and know how to leverage the platform are justifiably happy with it.

I have no idea how often you interact with others here, I see from your stream that not many interact with you, which is too bad, you've got some interesting things up. But somehow, I can't believe that with your background, you would not have more interaction if you really tried. My guess is that you're not ready to make the effort. If not, I apologize for the assumption.

So, in keeping with my motto, please tread lightly with your judgments and criticism ;-)

cc: +Vic Gundotra

Note: apologies for posting this twice, especially for those notified, but one of you suggested I repost this as my own post and not a share ;-)
