Hugo van der Merwe450My Pages circleMy G+ Home stream is pretty overwhelming, it would not be possible to read everything if I hadn't significantly dialled down some circles. I can and do read everything in my "Friends" circle, not too hard as many people aren't very active. ;) (I also limit my "Friends" circle to fewer than 100 people: I have an Acquaintances circle dialled down to the recommended "most posts", rather than "every post").A large portion of my Home stream consists of news-related posts from pages, with a good dose of geek and personal interests mixed in. I have a couple of non-overlapping circles that I use specifically for pages. A "Google Pages" circle contains, you guessed it, a whole bunch of Google pages. I also have a plain "Pages" circle which doesn't contain Google pages. In fact, here I'm sharing my "Pages" circle, for what it's worth. It is not particularly well curated, it's a mixed-value bag, but some of the pages in this circle are highly recommended! ;) What are your favourite pages?(BTW my pages circles are dialled down to one notch above zero, i.e.: "Show some posts from Pages in your Home stream".)2012-11-08 21:45:1932300CC G+

Drew Woods1,371So I've been working on a NEWS Stream. I don't particularly have a fondness for ANY one particular kind of news, though when I'm on my phone and on my way to work, I like to see some heading and pictures, and so far, I like the way +Google+ shows each post. I wish Google Reader did it like that or I would just stick with my reader, but it only shows text. And I'm sorry, I don't always judge a book by it's cover, but dammit, it draws my attention more easily. HOWEVER it's not complete. If you know any online news sources I don't have or just any decent Pages with great articles, please make suggestions in the comments. I will re-share my final Circle when it is complete. 2012-08-15 13:26:1613101CC G+

Second Success Raises Hope for a Way to Rid Babies of H.I.V. http://nyti.ms/1jSqD3j

When scientists made the stunning announcement last year that a baby born with H.I.V. had apparently been cured through aggressive drug treatment just 30 hours after birth, there was immediate skepticism that the child had ever been infected in the first place.

But on Wednesday the existence of a second such baby was revealed at an AIDS conference here, leaving little doubt that the treatment had worked. A leading researcher said there might be five more such cases in Canada and three in South Africa.

Major Changes in SAT Announced by College Board http://nyti.ms/1jS51Ut

Saying its college admission exams do not focus enough on the important academic skills, the College Board announced on Wednesday a fundamental rethinking of the SAT, eliminating obligatory essays, ending the longstanding penalty for guessing wrong and cutting obscure vocabulary words.

David Coleman, president of the College Board, criticized his own test, the SAT and its main rival, the ACT, saying that both “have become disconnected from the work of our high schools.”

In addition, Mr. Coleman announced new programs to help low-income students, who will now be given fee waivers allowing them to apply to four colleges at no charge. And even before the new exam starts, the College Board, in partnership with Khan Academy, will offer free online practice problems from old tests and instructionalvide... more »

Kerry Kennedy Is Found Not Guilty of Driving While Impaired http://nyti.ms/1hZ5J4R

After nearly 20 months of buildup, the misdemeanor trial of Kerry Kennedy ended on Friday in a breakneck blur, as jurors took less than two hours to find her not guilty of driving under the influence of a drug.

The four-day trial, which featured a riveting turn on the witness stand by Ms. Kennedy, 54, was centered on an act that neither she nor prosecutors dispute: On July 13, 2012, she drove her Lexus S.U.V. erratically after swallowing Zolpidem, a generic form of the sleep medication Ambien. She sideswiped a tractor-trailer on a highway in Westchester County before she was found, slumped over her sleeping wheel, her car stalled on a local road. Read more: http://nyti.ms/1hZ5J4R

Texas Judge Strikes Down State Ban on Same-Sex Marriage http://nyti.ms/1hzEGZo

federal judge in Texas struck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage on Wednesday, ruling that the laws restricting marriage to a man and a woman violated the United States Constitution, handing gay rights advocates a major legal victory in one of the biggest and most conservative states in the country.

The judge wrote that the amendment to the state Constitution that Texas voters approved in 2005 defining marriage as between a man and a woman — and two similar laws passed in 1997 and 2003 — denied gay couples the right to marry and demeaned their dignity “for no legitimate reason.” Read more: http://nyti.ms/1hzEGZo

Harold Ramis, Who Helped Redefine What Makes Us Laugh on Screen, Dies at 69 http://nyti.ms/1fyVkth

Harold Ramis, a writer, director and actor whose sly but boisterous silliness helped catapult comedies like “Groundhog Day,” “Ghostbusters,” “Animal House” and “Caddyshack” to commercial and critical success, died on Monday in his Chicago-area home. He was 69.

Mr. Ramis was a master at creating hilarious scenes and plotlines peopled by indelible characters, among them a groundskeeper obsessed with a gopher, fraternity brothers at war with a college dean and a jaded weatherman condemned to repeating Groundhog Day over and over. Accord Is Signed in Ukraine but Doubts Are Strong http://nyti.ms/1cybXUL

The embattled president of Ukraine and leaders of the opposition signed a political deal on Friday aimed at ending a spiral of lethal violence with early elections and a reduction in presidential powers, but Russia declined to endorse the accord, and many protesters said nothing short of the president’s resignation would get them off the street.

In a further sign of President Viktor F. Yanukovych’s diminished influence, the Ukrainian Parliament voted to allow the release of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who has been imprisoned for more than two years. In a 310-to-54 vote, lawmakers decriminalized the actions for which she was incarcerated. Read more: http://nyti.ms/1cybXUL

The Loyal Users of Google Plus Say It Is No Ghost Town http://nyti.ms/1hvH5IM

A front-page article last weekend called Google Plus a ghost town. Since then, dozens of the very passionate ghosts who hang out there have let me know that, in fact, it is a lively, conversation-filled place that is unlike any other Internet social network.

My article said that even though Google Plus had just a fraction of the active users that Facebook had, it served another important purpose for Google — providing a single log-in for all Google products and a broader view of users’ digital lives, even if people who signed up never returned to the social network.

But for some users, it also provides a rich social networking experience, especially for people interested in photography, video chats, in-depth online conversations and meeting people they don’t know who have similarinter... more »

Russia Men’s Hockey Team Eliminated in Quarterfinals http://nyti.ms/1e7hez8

The Russian men’s hockey players were put forward as the host country’s most important entry in the Sochi Olympics, the only team that really mattered to many here. No one will ever know for sure the pressure they faced, only the humiliating ending they encountered.

Russia was holding its collective breath with this team, and was prepared to keep holding it through the gold medal game on Sunday, the grand finale before the closing ceremony. Instead, all the air was let out in the most dispiriting way on Wednesday, in a 3-1 loss to Finland in the quarterfinals. They did not get close. Read more: http://nyti.ms/1e7hez8

The Plus in Google Plus? It’s Mostly for Google http://nyti.ms/1dwpoFs

Google Plus may not be much of a competitor to Facebook as a social network, but it is central to Google’s future — a lens that allows the company to peer more broadly into people’s digital life, and to gather an ever-richer trove of the personal information that advertisers covet. Some analysts even say that Google understands more about people’s social activity than Facebook does.

The reason is that once you sign up for Plus, it becomes your account for all Google products, from Gmail to YouTube to maps, so Google sees who you are and what you do across its services, even if you never once return to the social network itself.

Before Google released Plus, the company might not have known that you were the same person when you searched, watched videos and used maps. With a single Plusaccount, ... more »

Economics can tell us how to make Valentine’s Day special for our significant others. We economists may have taken all the fun out of Christmas, but I think we can make Valentine’s Day more successful. Here’s how. First, figure out how to signal to your mate that you really care about him or her. Second, if you want to give your mate a great Valentine’s present, spend money on yourself. Finally, one great gift is to stop hoping for perfection in your mate and, in the words of Stephen Stills, “love the one you’re with.”

College Football Star Michael Sam Says He Is Gay; May Become First Publicly Gay Player in N.F.L. http://nyti.ms/1da3k3r

Coaches at the University of Missouri divided players into small groups at a preseason football practice last year for a team-building exercise. One by one, players were asked to talk about themselves — where they grew up, why they chose Missouri and what others might not know about them.

As Michael Sam, a defensive lineman, began to speak, he balled up a piece of paper in his hands. “I’m gay,” he said. With that, Mr. Sam set himself on a path to become the first publicly gay player in the National Football League.

“I looked in their eyes, and they just started shaking their heads — like, finally, he came out,” Mr. Sam said Sunday in an interview with The New York Times, the first time he spoke publicly about his sexual orientation.Read more: ht... more »

Senator Pat Roberts Races to Renew Ties, if Not Make a Home, in Kansas http://nyti.ms/1d3dK4X

In an interview, the three-term senator acknowledged that he did not have a home of his own in Kansas. The house on a country club golf course that Pat Roberts lists as his voting address belongs to two longtime supporters and donors — C. Duane and Phyllis Ross — and he says he stays with them when he is in the area. He established his voting address there the day before his challenger, Milton Wolf, announced his candidacy last fall, arguing that Mr. Roberts was out of touch with his High Plains roots.

“I have full access to the recliner,” the senator joked. Turning serious, he added, “Nobody knows the state better than I do.”

That assertion would be disputed by Tea Party activists energized by Mr. Wolf’s candidacy. Read more: http://nyti.ms/1d3dK4X

Farm Bill Compromise Will Reduce Spending and Change Programs http://nyti.ms/1jYGyfZ

House and Senate negotiators agreed on Monday on a new five-year farm bill that will eliminate or consolidate dozens of agriculture subsidy programs, expand government-subsidized crop insurance and cut about $9 billion from the food stamp program over the next decade.

The bipartisan agreement, two years after lawmakers began work on the nearly $1 trillion bill, is a major step forward in reauthorizing hundreds of farm and nutrition programs that must be renewed every five years. And, at least for now, it brings to an end to the partisan fighting that stalled two previous attempts to pass the legislation. The bill would reduce spending by about $23 billion over the next 10 years. Read more: http://nyti.ms/1jYGyfZ

Government to Allow Technology Companies to Disclose More Data on Surveillance Requests http://nyti.ms/1cmXlIf

The Obama administration will allow Internet companies to talk more specifically about when they’re forced to turn over customer data to government agents, the Justice Department said Monday.

The new rules resolve legal fights with Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Facebook before the nation’s secret surveillance court. But while under the terms of the new arrangement, customers will have a somewhat better idea of how often the government demands information, they still won’t know what’s being collected, or how much.

The dispute began last year after a former government contractor, Edward J. Snowden, revealed that F.B.I. and National Security Agency surveillance programs rely heavily on data from U.S. email providers, video-chat services andsocial-... more »

Spy Agencies Scour Phone Apps for Personal Data http://nyti.ms/1jXrAXM

Jamie Dimon’s Pay Jumps to $20 Million in a Year of Legal Woes for JPMorgan Chase http://nyti.ms/1jK15F3

Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan’s chief executive, has been awarded total pay of $20 million for 2013, nearly double the amount he received for 2012, according to a regulatory filing released on Friday.

The bank’s board of directors approved the increase even though a steady stream of scandals and a raft of regulatory actions have in recent months cast doubt on Mr. Dimon’s leadership at the nation’s largest bank. The big increase for 2013 came in the face of opposition from a vocal minority of board members, who wanted Mr. Dimon’s compensation for 2013 to be roughly equal to his pay for 2012, which totaled $11.5 million. Sarah vows that she does not want to follow in those footsteps. But how will her life be different? She became pregnant at 15. Her son will be born in February.

There is a myth in America: if you have a strong moral compass, work hard and make good choices, you will have equal opportunity. But after two years of listening to and documenting low-income families in rural America (for our forthcoming feature-length documentary “Rich Hill”), we have witnessed a starkly unequal playing field.
