But, get this: Hoinsky’s book, Above the Game: A Guide to Getting Awesome with Women has raised $15,929 on Kickstarter, the world's largest funding platform for creative projects.

Here's something interesting: some people are making maps of the world, with the place names replaced by the best possible rendering into English of what the names actually mean. (I'm writing this from just north of St. Addgod, in the Land of the Successor, which is actually one of the less poetic names you end up with)

The translations aren't perfectly even; I don't know why their world map leaves the capital of Cuba as "Havana," rather than "Haven," for example. But I have to say that this is pretty awesome, and would love to see it in the form of a printed atlas, not just a map...

Sealants are used to coat tarmac after placing it. This reduces wear on the actual tarmac and makes it look prettier. Two types are commonly uses: coal tar and asphalt sealant. The former is a waste product from burning coal and contains many carcinogens. The latter doesn't, and also smells far less.

Throughout the US coal tar sealant is being banned as the research on carcinogenic PAHs progresses. Everyone should benefit from this, including the workers who apply the coal tar sealant. They regularly suffer burns from this chemical.

PAHs also happen to occur in a lot of other places. The black stuff on your hamburger and other baked/deep-fried food is likely full of them as well and are linked to a significantly increased cancer risk.

I have to say one thing... Cheney is right.

Now before you go off  on me think about that statement for a minute. This is  a democratic republic. Namely we vote for individuals to represent us.  We don't get to directly vote on every action the government takes.

What this means is that we need to field more candidates that give us better choices of who represents us. It also means that we will never be 100% in agreement with every choice that our representative makes.  It's this simple fact of our country that the Republican party is playing us against. The GOP hopes that by stiring up a bunch of BS about wire taps and Gitmo etc that we'll turn on Obama and Democrats over all and vote in more Republicans that have done far worse.

The real answer is a wave of grass roots candidates. Not in the vein of naive tea party types that leap straight to the federaloff... more »
