Wesly Smith3,209Who's interested in exploring and photographing the first U.S. city west of the Rocky Mountains to be incorporated? On Saturday, March 1, we'll meet at the bottom of the Oregon City Municipal Elevator (7th St & Railroad Ave, Oregon City, OR) at 2:30 PM. We'll explore the downtown area along the Willamette River, catch the Municipal Elevator or the stairs to the top of the bluff, and walk the trail overlooking the industrial area and Willamette Falls. We'll top the afternoon off at McMenamins Oregon City (102 9th St) for dinner around 5:30 PM. All are welcome, photographer or not, young or old. There's the potential for getting in a couple miles of walking here, but it's not required. There's a good chance for liquid sunshine to fall, but we know how to deal with that, right? If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to fire away either as a comment on the event or directly to me as a message, email, text or phone call (503-928-6701). Oregon City Photowalk2014-03-01 14:30:0014

Today got off to a bit of a rocky start but ended up being one of the coolest days of my life thus far. We booked a tour back in April to visit one of Iceland's largest glaciers in Iceland today.

We arrived at a local hotel where the pickup was supposed to happen, but after it was 30 minutes late we suspected something might be wrong. Turns out that the tour company had us booked but had totally botched the pickup. They promised they would get us in the next day but that would be tomorrow, the day we leave which just wasn't going to work. However thanks to the amazing skills of the heroic concierge of a hotel we wern't even staying at, we not only got re-booked later in the day, we ended up with a private tour all to ourselves.

It took about 2 hours to get up to the glacier, including a couple of spots along the way to see such sights as a hotspring that came out of theg... more »

One thing you saw practically everywhere in Iceland were their horses, much smaller than your average horse (But don't call them a pony!) they were very friendly and would usually come up to the car if you pulled off the road near them... Except this one who wanted nothing to do with us...

One thing I noticed a lot of in our drives around Iceland were derelict buildings. With how low the population density is houses often become neglected and abandoned. Many of them were far off the road with no way to reach them without resorting to driving across the lava fields. This one still had a driveway heading to it so we went off to explore.
As we passed the house there was a beautifully build little graveyard with only two headstones, a man and his wife who had died in 1991 and 1992 respectively. It appeared that after their death their next of kin had left their house and property as a memorial to them.
It seemed weird and somehow disrespectful to photograph their graves, though I normally don't mind shooting gravesites, so I contented myself with taking photos of their house and moving on.

We found this little hut on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere while wandering around Iceland. There was a sign nearby, but it wasn't in english so we've no idea what it was for or why it was there... After we knew what to look for we noticed there were several others in various places around the island.

Since we didn't know what it was we assumed it must be a Hobbit House.

The Buðir black church is one of 3 black churches in Iceland. They are black because the exterior wood is painted with pitch, just like the hull of a boat. This is to protect it from the harsh Icelandic elements. This works fairly well and buildings treated in this way have survived over 100 years.

Well, after a long flight back, we've arrived safe at home in Portland...

it's now 3:30AM in my head and only 8:30 local time, so I'm on my least favorite part of the trip. Where I reset my internal clock via sledgehammer by staying up until I would sleep local time and then going to bed. Works great, but it sucks when you've been up for about 24 hours.

Best way to stay awake? Edit photos!!!

It took about 2 hours to get up to the glacier, including a couple of spots along the way to see such sights as a hotspring that came out of the ground at 212F and driving on one of Iceland's "F" roads, unpaved rural highways that require 4WD to legally travel on(We did it in a tour bus!) but the sight was perhaps the final thing left in the world truly deserving of the word epic. It stretched from horizon to horizon and touched the sky nearly seamlessly with the clouds.

We transferred onto an 8WD converted NATO rocket wagon to travel up the glacier itself, and proceeded to go 100m underground.

The tunnels were amazing and fantastic, room after room deep under the ice. Finally we reached a point where we walked across a small bridge across a glacial water pool. Gavin however was not paying any attention at all and proceeded to walk right off the bridge and into the glacial pool. The look on his face was one of pure shock as what he THOUGHT Was solid floor swallowed him nearly to the waist. I was a few steps behind him and on my way to diving in after him(I had no idea how deep the pool was) when the guide hauled him out and made sure he was OK. Luckily we had dry clothes in the truck, and he was more shocked by the cold than anything.

After completing the tour we headed back down the mountain to the long drive back to Reykjavik.

April had been wanting to visit the "Blue Lagoon", a touristy hotspring you could soak in. I wasn't super stoked on this idea, as it seemed like a gimmick, but she wanted to go so I was happy to go along. I'm certainly glad I did, as other than the frigid run to the water, it was absolutely relaxing and amazing.

By the time we left there, it was nearly 11PM, and still very light out, so we took the time to make a few stops on the way home to capture the "Midnight sun". Its now 12:30 in the morning, and still light out.... I'm going to bed. ___

On our world travels we had a day in Hawaii we jokingly call "The Best Worst Day Ever". It was a day where everything that could go wrong did. Today was one of those days.

We were booked today for a horseback riding tour in the wilds outside the city, followed by a whale watching tour.

We woke up to rain, but had packed rain gear, expecting this to happen and felt we'd be ok since it was still 40F out. What we didn't expect was the blisteringly cold winds that would assault us immediately as we walked outdoors. We were given a quick rundown of how to ride the horses, outfitted and off we went. We did ok for the first half of the ride, but on the second Gavin(Who was riding a horse on his own in front of me) accidentally got his horse moving a bit too fast and got tossed off the horse.

He scared himself pretty badly, and probably took 10 years off my life, but ultimately he was totally ok. He opted to take the rescue car back to the horse ranch with April, but they could only take two horses back so I finished the ride with the rest of the group.

I arrived back at the ranch after another half and hour frozen, but having seen some amazing scenery. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to stop and take photos of any of it as we were running behind due to another person also falling off a horse.

After that we stuffed our frozen selves on a short bus ride to the harbor to catch the whale watching ship, where we were informed that weather was too severe to go out, and that they would be bussing us an hour away to another harbor where we would depart from instead.

We got on a small boat with about 10,000 of our tourist compatriots where it was quickly evident that there wasn't going to be enough room for everyone to stay in the warm cabin. Luckily quite a few people wanted railside seats and headed out. When Gavin and I finally warmed up enough to go outside, we got one foot out the door before a wave came over the side and soaked us both again...

About that time the sea began to get very rough, and we'd yet to see more than a few Terns as far as wildlife goes. We didn't care too much at that point though, as we were trying wildly to hold onto anything that was bolted down in an attempt to keep from being tossed about the cabin in a reenactment of the movie "A Perfect Storm". Sadly, April gets seasick easily, and even having already taken a seasickness pill she and her lunch had a parting of ways. Even Gavin, who is normally game for anything was just as happy staying inside.

After that was over, we hopped back on the bus to ride back to town. As people chatted I noticed that the driver was having more and more trouble getting the full size tour bus to shift into gear, to the point that by the time we got back into Reykjavik he was stalling and grinding gears and we were crawling through traffic. He did finally make it back, but the bus was not a happy camper.

We had been looking forward all day to eating at a famous burger shop on the harborfront for dinner, so we took our cold and tired selves over there for dinner where we were promptly told that Iceland's butchers were on strike, so until that was sorted out all burgers would be made from Lamb. This didn't bother me so much, as I was more than willing to try a new meat, April was a bit more hesitant but gave it but we both agreed that this was likely one thing too many for captain adventure to try, so we didn't tell him what it was. They turned out to be fantastic, if a bit spendy, and were very much the highlight of the day.

All in all we made it back to the apartment in one piece and had we now have a new "Best Worst Day Ever", as at the end of the day we're still having a great adventure!

Because I only had film cameras today, I can't show you anything from today's adventures. Instead here's one from Gullfloss, the biggest falls in Europe.___

Today we set out to explore the "Golden Circle" a roughly 200 mile loop of wilderness that takes you from Reykjavik out into central Iceland and shows you a lot of really spectacular sights.

We started out the day trying to find coffee, but it appears that Iceland is just really not a coffee drinking country, as even the local roaster was just not our cup of tea(har har). So we got muffins at a bakery up the road and set out.

We went to see the largest waterfall in Europe, and ran from the ominous rain clouds that intermittently drenched us throughout the day. Every time we saw them April exclaimed at the HORSES!!! So we finally got a chance to stop and meet them in person. They're much smaller than your average horse, but even the wild ones are very friendly and will come over and say hi if you get nearby.

April couldn't keep awake this morning so while she napped, Gavin and I took a walk and found ourselves down at the pier just as the fishing boats were putting out their catch for the morning.

There were a lot of sharks, and many fish I couldn't identify. Gavin was a fantastic mix of excited and grossed out to see all the dead fish, especially when they'd been pre-gutted.

After that we finally got April to get up we went out and started what we typically do on the first day in a new country, get our bearings in the city. Reykjavik isn't a large city, we explored every section of the city throughout the day, culminating in a tour by Tuk-Tuk(A Tuk-Tuk is a Vespa front end grafted to a rickshaw) which was quite crazy!

Its been a few days since I've had time to post anything as I've been busy with last minute things on the way to going to Iceland for a week of shooting.

So I'll fix that by sharing one from a recent shoot with the awesome Jes Atomic!

On rolling with the punches...

I think its healthy to talk about mistakes. You often learn more from mistakes than any other experience.

Yesterday I made a mistake on a shoot, one that could have potentially tanked the whole session.

I quite often shoot portrait sessions, and this one was slated to be just like any other. Basic outdoor portraits in an outdoor setting. I'd done countless other sessions like this, no big deal.

I packed my camera bag the night before as usual, checking that my cameras, lenses, bodies, flash triggers, and all the other flotsam that goes along with a session of this type.

I recently got myself a new camera bag, so I was being extra careful(or so I thought) to think through everything I needed. Then I did something I never do until the next day. I shut the top of my bag.

Yesterday I made a mistake on a shoot, one that could have potentially tanked the whole session.

Now this might not seem like it was the biggest of infractions, after all you want to close the bag before you head out right? The problem was that closing the bag means its checked, and double checked, totally ready to go.

The reason I don't close the bag until the next day is that I always put batteries on the charger the night before, and grab them before I leave as my very last step. But I had closed the bag. That meant that the batteries were in there, right??

Wrong.

I arrived at the chosen location for the shoot early as usual and began to go through my bag and get my gear ready to shoot when I discovered that NONE of my digital gear had batteries. None for my Canon DSLR, none for my Mamiya digital back. It was 20 minutes before the session started, and past the time when the closest pro shop had closed. No time to run home, and nobody close enough to borrow batteries from.

I then began to take stock in what my options were. I had three bodies with me, the previously mentioned Canon DSLR, a Mamiya AFDII, and a Contax AX. The Canon was out... No power. The Mamiya couldn't shoot digital, no battery for the back. But I DID have a film back for it. The Contax had batteries too.

Ok, I shoot a lot of film, so we'll just shoot this whole session on film... And look, I had 3 rolls of film. 1 in 35mm (A 50 exposure long roll) and two 120 rolls.

And then I realized I had also left my light meter behind. Sure the cameras had meters, but they wouldn't meter for my flashes. So I went back to the old standby of photographers from the past. MATH!

A quick phone search revealed the guide number of my flashes, a beefy GN54. So I calculated guide numbers and designed all my lighting in my head.

Was it stressful? Sure. I was used to relying on the digicams to show me that my lighting was correct, and I was running without a net.

But you know what? We got it done. I rolled with the punches, and we got the session in the bag. And next time I'm going to sleep with batteries in my pockets....
