A reasonable series of articles on many of the wineries in south Santa Clara (aka "silicon") Valley. Today I'll be trying Sunlit Oaks for the first time -- my band is playing there this afternoon and we get paid in wine!

Excellent Papers for 2012
Posted by +Corinna Cortes and +Alfred Spector, Google Research
Googlers across the company actively engage with the scientific community by publishing technical papers, contributing open-source packages, working on standards, introducing new APIs and tools, giving talks and presentations, participating in ongoing technical debates, and much more. Our publications offer technical and algorithmic advances, feature aspects we learn as we develop novel products and services, and shed light on some of the technical challenges we face at Google.
In an effort to highlight some of our work, we periodically select a number of publications to be featured. We honor the influential papers authored or co-authored by Googlers covering all of 2012 -- covering roughly 6% of our total publications. It’s tough choosing, so we may have left out some important pap... more »

Today was install bright LEDs in the guitar effects day. Verified that on/off status is now visible in direct sunlight (and yes, this is important in California).

I have a tremendous number of thoughts about the various revelations about the NSA's domestic espionage programs revealed this week. But first and foremost, I wanted to share this message from +Larry Page and our Chief Legal Officer +David Drummond. Google had no involvement in the PRISM program and the first we heard of it was when Greenwald's article hit the press.
I'm not sure what the details of this PRISM program are, but I can tell you that the only way in which Google reveals information about users are when we receive lawful, specific orders about individuals -- things like search warrants. And we continue to stand firm against any attempts to do so broadly or without genuine, individualized suspicion, and publicize the results as much as possible in our Transparency Report. Having seen much of the internals of how we do this, I can tell you that it is a point of pride, both ... more »

The baddest song by the baddest rock group in the world.
Some pointers:
1. Shortly after 0:35, note how Tony Levin's blissful smile turns into shock as Bill Bruford syncopates the rhythm in a particularly fiendish way.
2. When the song really takes off at 2:27, note that Robert Fripp is actually playing a simple repetitive melody... in 5/4 time.
3. At 3:14, almost half-way through, we get the first lyrics.
I like it.

I've been putting Google Play's Listen Now feature through the paces and really enjoying it. You can select a song/artist/album from your library and have it stream songs based on that selection, mixing in songs from your library with those from the entire universe of songs available to Google Play. It does well even with obscure stuff.

Last week, Brazil hosted the 22nd annual World Wide Web Conference (WWW), a yearly international conference on the topic of the future direction of the World Wide Web, in Rio de Janeiro. Over 40 Googlers attended WWW, presenting papers, hosting tutorials and workshops, and providing demos at the Google booth. Read on for a brief summary of the opening ceremony, as well as a few of the talks representing Google’s participation in this year’s WWW:
The opening ceremony included the keynote talk by reCAPTCHA founder and Carnegie Mellon Associate Professor +Luis von Ahn, which focused on the power of human computation and its application for language learning. Using similar concepts developed from the CAPTCHA system (http://goo.gl/xzSi), von Ahn’s new project, Duolingo (http://goo.gl/xAOe6), enables millions of users to translate content... more »

Launching the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab
Posted by +Hartmut Neven, Director of Engineering
We believe quantum computing may help solve some of the most challenging computer science problems, particularly in machine learning. Machine learning is all about building better models of the world to make more accurate predictions. If we want to cure diseases, we need better models of how they develop. If we want to create effective environmental policies, we need better models of what’s happening to our climate. And if we want to build a more useful search engine, we need to better understand spoken questions and what’s on the web so you get the best answer.
So today we’re launching the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab. NASA’s Ames Research Center will host the lab, which will house a quantum computer from D-Wave S... more »

Building A Mystery
Paul Krugman
Jared Bernstein shakes his head at what he calls “weirdness” at the Washington Post, citing an editorial and a commentary by Robert Samuelson. I second his views, but I’d like to point out something else about Samuelson’s piece.
What Samuelson does is to throw up his hands and declare that we just don’t understand what’s going on in the macroeconomy. How does he know this? He talks to several people who declare themselves deeply puzzled by events — notably, Lorenzo Bini Smaghi and Allan Meltzer.
But it’s no mystery why Bini Smaghi and Meltzer would find it all very puzzling — they personally got everything wrong. Bini Smaghi spent years sneering at anyone suggesting that Greece might need to write off some of its debts. Meltzer has been predicting runaway inflation for four years.
Some of us don’t find the macro developments ... more »

The claim that bitcoin is "completely decentralized and independent of any single institution" is somewhat suspect. As far as I've gathered, the entire system is in the hands of a few developers and a tiny number powerful exchanges (MtGox controls 80% of the market). If this small number of individuals decides to change the protocol and (say) mint a number of new coins beyond the existing spec, they can easily do it. And it's likely there will be financial incentives for them to do so. Take for instance the recent instance of two slightly different implementations of the protocol leading to a chain fork. If the system was truly decentralized, this problem would have not been so easily resolved. But since the number of people within the bitcoin inner circle is so small, they were able to quickly agree to abandon one of the versions and eliminate the block chain fork. So, I'm not say... more »
