So wait, wait until you can wait, no more - Tobermory, ON
Title from Deerhunter, Neither Of Us, Uncertainly
Another shot that's long due to be posted. This one's a unique one. There were about ~50 people mulling about the water and by the edges, and it would've been impossible to get this shot....if I didn't have my filters and a tripod :) Long Exposures to the rescue.
I think I took about 3 different images with everyone blurred out in different areas in each image (thank god no one kept still to be persisent in each shot!), some layer stacking, some erasing, some cloning, and ta-da! Nature as intended.

Great curves in all the right places - Toronto, ON
This is one of the multiple wavedecks that are lined up along Harbourfront in Toronto downtown. I can't remember exactly which one this was now, but I want to say the Simcoe Wavedeck.
It required a lot of patience to get this shot. It was really hard avoid photobombs, people running up and down the walkway, kids and adults both!

You and I, we're all in this alone - Tobermory, ON
There's quite a few things that struck me about this scene. The dark, and almost geometrically shaped, clouds. The rough, choppy waters. The boat swaying in the wind while the sail is standing firm. This was another example where I felt the 16:9 crop ratio brings out the best in this photo. Oh and btw, I did not do any processing on the tint or temperature. The All-Blue look of this scene is completely natural, monochromatic in its own way.

Balance the serenity by encasing it with ruggedness - Tobermory, ON
Why is this composed the way it is? Because there were numerous people climbing the rocky walls, right below me! To the bottom right is the famous Tobermory Grotto. I wish they would have special "photography time" for it, there were just far too many people to get any nice photos of it. Regardless, I was able to get a nice shot of the lovely water around the coast.

We were but stones, your light made us stars - Long Point, ON
Lyrics from Pearl Jam- Light Years (with lyrics)
As promised earlier, a light show! This was my first real opportunity at capturing the Milky Way. Not the usual kind of long exposure photography I do, but no less stunning! I was blown away by the amount of stars I could see here, and by the fact that the ring of the Milky Way was visible to the naked eye! The light you see on the horizon is from the cities across the lake (Erie, PA, by my estimation). If you look close enough, even a meteorioid was captured! The boat and the inner coast was nicely lit up by a campfire right behind me :)

Just like yesterday, I told you I would stay - Toronto, ON
Title from Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
Apologies for the recent lack of activity. It's been hard finding time to go out and shoot, or sift through the good old backlog of photos. Too bad life has to get in the way of photography!
Speaking of backlog, this one's from waaaay back in May when we had that little event called the #TorontoPhotoWalk /+The Great Canadian Photowalk - Toronto. It culminated on Toronto Island, with a big bunch of us perched on the edge of the island waiting for the sun to go down to capture the city skyline.
I spent a lot of time on this photo. Not on the processing, no. Instead, I had a hard time deciding on the crop. In the end, I went with a 16:9 aspect ratio crop. I'm also working on a B&W version of this that I will try to post soon.

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking - Toronto, ON
Title from Time - Pink Floyd + Lyrics
So a few weeks ago, I posted a shot of one of the most dramatic sunsets I'd ever seen, following an enormous thunderstorm ( http://goo.gl/qGbji ). Of course I wasn't going to miss the opportunity to capture a long exposure of this epic sunset. I knew I was going to have a very small time window to capture those colours quickly, so I hustled and managed to get two shots. One was a happy accident (will post that another time) and the second was this one.
I knew the clouds would mask the blue skies, but I did NOT expect such deep blood reds to emerge due to the long exposure! I think the slight warmth that the B+W filter casts definitely added to the reds. Again, no exaggeration of colours in post, just pulled back the shadows quite a bit to... more »

Time for a song and BBQ - Milton, ON
The Crawford Lake Conservation Area contains a reconstructed 15th century Iroquois Wendat village, built on the original site. It's quite interesting to see the habitat and tools that the natives used here, almost 600 years ago! Quite a lot of work and research by archaeologists went into the recreating this site. This is a shot of one of the structures there.

Last one from the Hilton Falls series. Technically, this isn't a photo of the falls, but I was standing right on top at the edge of the falls, with a steep drop about 2 feet behind me. The stream itself wasn't too forceful though, so I was able to keep myself and my tripod steady enough ;)

So this is following the photo I posted yesterday ( http://goo.gl/x1DNp ). The storm didn't last more than 2 hours, and the clouds started parting just as the sun was going down. Rawr - Toronto, ON
I honestly could not think of a better title for this photo. There I was, sitting at home in the evening after a very hot day, when out of nowhere it became dark. I looked outside and saw a MASSIVE cloud moving in. A quick grab of the camera and burst to the balcony, this is what I caught. The cloud really looked like it was going to eat everything in its path!
The storm itself that followed was short and sweet, but the aftermath was tremendous! More on that tomorrow :)

Curve by curve, line by line - Pune, India
Some of you may be familiar with Mehndi, which is a form of skin decoration traditionally used for weddings by various cultures in South Asia. This is from one of my best friend's wedding that I attended this past April. I was never able to to close up of the mehndi design during the wedding itself. So a few days later, when my friend and his wife came to see me off as I was leaving for the airport, I took the opportunity to snap this shot.

Oh hazy lazy days, I could dream of you forever - Pune, India
Title from The Walkmen - Blue As Your Blood
An early morning shot of the city I called home for the first 13 years of my life: Pune! Much, much has changed since I left, but it still remains my home away from home :)
This was taken from the top of a very treacherous tower located on top of a hill. There are hills running all throughout the city so there are plenty of great viewpoints. It was very early in the morning and the fog was just retreating. I tried to maintain that hazy, lazy look in the processing with pretty even, neutral tones.

This is the 3rd image from my Hilton Falls series. Still the only falls I've photographed so far but I'm hoping to visit some new ones over the next little while.
I was pretty much in the water at this point. Any further in and I would've risked soaking my borrowed camera, so this was as close in as I could get.

Hello G+! Finally back to posting since I got back from my vacation. Still sorting through all the pics I took in India, that's gonna take a while, especially since a wedding was involved!
I'd been holding on to this image for a while, dunno why, so I finally decided to post it today due guilt from lack of posting anything for so long. It was shot from a window of an airplane as I took off from Toronto to Chicago. I could hardly believe the colours as I scrambled to get a shot off before the plane turned away!

I purposefully chose a very shallow DOF and focused within a plane that did not fall along the center of any of the flowers. I think it looks more...playful ;)
Usually I go for a high contrast B&W with some extreme black and white tones. I decided to change it up a bit and go with some slightly neutral greys, along with reddish highlights and bluish shadows on the split toning. Very much +Alan Shapiro inspired! Hope you guys like it!

Feeding the narrows with streams of silence - Hilton Falls, Milton, ON
My first ever waterfall shot! Went hiking again this past weekend, and I was really excited because I've been itching to try and shoot a waterfall ever since I got my first DSLR this past December. The hiking trail offered up this beautiful one :)
Learned quickly though that it's pretty tricky to come up with interesting and original compositions. Had to get my feet a little wet for some good shots but it was totally worth it! I was even able to shoot a few while standing on top at the edge of the falls. I'll post one from that view another time.
This one was shot keeping the main falls, as well as the mossy side wall, within view. It was a tricky exposure as the wall was much darker, but the small water streams down the wall induced an excellent green glow. Used a circular polarizer to... more »

Oh killer killer eyes, surrender pink steam - Toronto, ON
So there I was, camera in hand, minding my own business (as much as a guy with a camera can), walking around downtown Toronto just before sunset, right after some heavy yet very brief showers, when the Sun peaked through the clouds. It cast this tremendous pink glow on the clouds throughout the sky.
Pointed camera at subject. Snap.
Btw other than some cleanup on highlights, shadows and some minor contrast adjustments, no other modification was made. The colours were really this brilliant!

Title from Troubles Will Be Gone by The Tallest Man On Earth
Finally got around to processing more photos from the recent trip. This one is from one of the most enigmatic areas in all of Mumbai: IIT, Powai. The campus is built on top of a hill, very close to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Outside the campus, it is pure bedlam, with dense construction and insanely heavy traffic.
Cross the gates into the campus and it's as if you've stepped into a completely different world. I could say so many things about this building ...about Walter Gropius ...about Bauhaus.. It would be like talking about how we arrived at the point we are now in modern architecture, in modern art, who were our “fathers” in terms of creators and creations. This building is much more than a building. It's a symbol. Together with the old Bauhaus University in Weimar, designed by Henry van de Velde and the new one in Dessau, designed by Walter Gropius himself, the Bauhaus Museum in Berlin, also designed by Gropius, reminds of one of the most daring and creative periods in modern art and architecture. Fun times! It was well worth it though, the main trail ran along side a cliff and offered plenty of lookout points with excellent views.

Forget about your house of cards - Toronto, ON
I'm having a hard time nailing the photo I want to submit for the Plus One Magazine. I decided to step away from it for a while and come back to it later. Fresh eyes and all that. In the meantime, I worked on this one.
Edit - Please excuse all the noise that was introduced into this image. I have no idea why that's there. Looks fine in Lightroom and even the exported image had no issues. Only after uploading it here do I see all this terrible noise creeping into the corners. Anyone else ever have this issue? Any fix?

All out of escapes - Toronto, ON
I still cannot believe I could not be in Berlin for the +GPlus Euro Photowalk. The amount of talent, all the masters of LE and Architectural photography...sigh...but there's word of a North American one happening sometime next year, so here's hoping :)
This one goes for #ArchitecturalVisions curated by the awesome twosome of +Joel Tjintjelaar and +Julia Anna Gospodarou, who inspired me to attempt this kind of photography in the first place!
Also goes for #MonochromeMonday by +Charles Lupica, +Hans Berendsen, +Jerry Johnson, +Steve Barge, and +Manuel Votta

See what you dream - Toronto, ON
After I took this shot, I was highly tempted to do a B&W conversion, but the colours presented were far too vivid to pass up. We've been getting such consistently colourful sunsets here! I still might do it a B&W version...what do you guys think?
This photo is a combination of 2 long exposures using a B+W 10 stop ND Filter, 30 seconds for the background and 90 seconds for the foreground, blended manually in PS, with some contrast/brightness adjustments in LR.
P.S: Yes I know, the asymmetry of the bench is a little distracting...

Lonely and thirsty, always wanting more - Toronto, ON
Good Monday morning everyone! I was finally able to go out for a shoot since coming back from my trip. Which means a chance to do more LE work :)
This one is a 60 sec exposure, using a 10 stop B+W ND Filter.

Bullets guiding in the light - Pune, India
I'd been wanting to try the "zoom while exposing" trick for a while now but never found a decent enough use for it until this. Early morning, sun barely up, light streaming in through the trees...perfect! 2.5 seconds exposure, just enough to not blow out the photo.
I think this is my first ever contribution to #TreeTuesday by +Christina Lawrie and +Shannon S. Myers!

You know what the sun's all about when the lights go out - Toronto, ON

+Peter Carroll, would this qualify for #WayWednesday ?

Company's OK, Solitude is Bliss - Crystal Lake, IL
Good Thursday morning! This might be my last post for the next 2-3 weeks, I'm off to India for one of my best friend's wedding! Hopefully I'll come back with lots of photos to post :)
I spent some time doing a B&W version of this photo but somehow simply could not make it work. Plus I feel the the rocks at the edge of the water offer some interesting colour variations. So eventually went with this version.

Into the jaws of sky wide - Toronto, ON
Good morning, hope everyone's enjoying the long weekend! This photo was one of those "fortunate" shots I was able to get off. Early morning, sun not completely up yet, extremely foggy, and I was gearing up to do a long exposure to the right of frame. Just as I was about to screw on the ND filter, this boat cut right through the fog in front of me and sped ahead. Filter in one hand, I fumbled with the camera on the tripod with the other hand and managed to aim it at the boat and shoot...just as the sun came up over the fog! Worked out better than I thought...what do you think?

Forever fades black and comes up cold - Toronto, ON
Good Monday morning everyone! This is another one from an early foggy morning session I did a while back. It had not rained at all but the fog added moisture to the pier floor boards giving them a gorgeous glistening, reflective look.
It was very early in the morning and I thought I was alone at the harbour (save some joggers). I had my earphones on and was lost in my own world. Since I was doing long exposures, there was a lot of waiting time between shots. During the exposure of this shot, I felt a movement behind me. I turned around to see another photographer sneaking crouching and taking shots of me! We ended up having a chat (he said he was trying to capture my concentration while shooting). It was good to see someone else with the passion and dedication to come out so early to hone their craft :)
