I believe in tolerance. I believe in your right to worship as you choose, if you so choose to do; however, I also believe that places of worship should be taxed accordingly. And these are some pretty shocking statistics.

We’ve just closed our first renewable energy investment in Africa: $12 million USD (103 million Rand) investment in the Jasper Power Project, a 96 megawatt solar photovoltaic plant in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Upon completion, Jasper will be one of the largest solar installations on the continent, capable of generating enough electricity to power 30,000 South African homes. We believe this investment not only makes financial sense, but also has potential to help grow the renewable energy industry and move the world closer to a clean energy future. Read more about the investment and why we're excited about it on our blog: http://g.co/tdvb

For those that've read it, what are your thoughts?

What strike me most was the age of this text and it's non-violent extrapolation of the future.

Found this short read quite interesting: Don't stop thinking about tomorrow - Nesta (Independent UK ideation charity).

Maxims for thinking about the future

1.New forms of data–driven forecasting tell us  valuable things about the near future. There is scope for experimenting with these techniques
in order to find out what works.

2. Thinking about plausible future scenarios can help guard against fragility. Governments and businesses need foresight capabilities in order to
address systemic challenges.

3. Innovation starts with a story about the future. Imagining and sharing desires and fears about the futures is a way for all of us to shape it.

Open letter to Department of Communications, South Africa about the ITU:

As a teacher, user and advocate of open source concepts and languages, and digital native I find a meeting behind closed doors about the future of the Internet very disturbing. SOPA and ACTA has already been torn asunder, but it seems that the powers that be, come with bigger plans of control every time.

As a security and privacy concerned citizen I feel very strongly that the Internet should not be segmented, censored or have its use overly monitored. Secure end-to-end communications isn't only the birthright of citizens worldwide but also by and large a way for people to freely express, creatively explore and anonymously voice concerns about corrupt officials.

Corporations trying to cling to their old models of commerce (I'm talking specifically about those trying to enforce copyright above and beyond measurable good for the public domain) stifle innovation, and have no place or say about 'the commons' that has become our means and way of social interaction.

Any governing body that might have control over net neutrality, enforce blanket taxes on usage, try to enforce sender-pay policies or try to enforce strike-per-offence legal policies, deserves to be fought tooth and nail.

As a country with much potential but still on 63/64 on a recent broadband value scale (http://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadband/64890-south-africas-broadband-value-shocker.html ), I'm worried that the public has not heard anything with regards to this particular conference and the country's views on the ITU proposals.

An open and free Internet is crucial to African entrepreneurship, empowerment and growth. Recent fiber lines have given people hope as to the availability of cheap, accessible and unthrottled (read: oversold) access, but very little of this has come to pass as of yet. My web development students learn about technologies and access they will probably only have access to in their respective homes 5-10 years from now.

I know that none, or little or this may apply to South African policy, but I truly hope we do not just follow in the nations' footsteps that recommend increased control or veiled censorship. And as even the Internet giant Google says the ITU is 'the wrong place to make decisions about the future of the internet'. The first WWW proposal was made by Tim Berners-Lee from CERN which is a place of science and discourse. The Internet should stay a place of innovation, science, discourse and freedom of association first, all else is secondary.

If the ITU is well-intentioned (The EU doesn't seem to think so - http://falkvinge.net/2012/11/22/european-parliament-unanimously-passed-resolution-against-itu-asserting-control-over-internet/) and merely causing a shift of 'oversight responsibilities'  from the US to an international body, please take my humble and possibly myopic views to whoever is concerned and feel free to clear up any of my misperceptions.___

My favourite person for the day.

I have an idea.

IBM should modify Watson to give it the ability to interpret laws and contracts. Given a set of facts or fact probabilities about a case it should be able to output a probable verdict along with a list of laws or legal tests that were broken. This computer would be programmed by inputting written laws and contract which it would compile into legal tests and logic models that can be used to generate the verdict.

Even it it was just used as support to help courts untangle cases or for law student as an educational tool, it could be a useful machine.

Here is the kicker: All laws and contracts are software code for this machine.

The existence of this type of computer means all legal documents should now be subject to software patents and copyright.

I say let the lawyers sweat in fear of intellectual property infringement every time they write a new clause in a contract as we developers currently do when we write code.

Maybe I should patent this idea.___My favourite person for the day.
