Hard Drive Fail - Crashplan/Code42 Success

Usually we only write our experiences on the Internet when we have a crappy experience with a company. I wanted to share a great experience i have had over the last couple of days with Crashplan. They saved my photographs!

What's your personal data back up plan? You have one right? If you don't are you prepared to lose all of your photos if (more like when) your hard drive crashes or you drop your phone in the toilet? A couple of years ago i signed up for Crashplan from Code42. I had tried some other providers but they all had restrictions. The uploads got throttled when you hit a certain amount (even though the plans were "Unlimited") or they would not back up external hard drives etc. Crashplan had no such restrictions and they were $5 a month for unlimited storage. You download some software, set up your backup and... more »

Fall Walk with an Angel

Yesterday Riley and I got out for a walk. I ended up taking a lot of pictures. I think this has to be just about my favorite. I desperately try to hoard little slices of time to be able to take out on a rainy day. Pictures will never do the memories justice but it doesn't stop my from trying.

Jared and Anna

This fall season I have not been doing paid portrait sessions. With my wife back to work and all the kids it has been really difficult to schedule. I have turned down a number of sessions but when my friends Jared and Anna asked me to do their engagement pictures i figuered why not? It was beautiful here in Atlanta on Sunday. We got out and made a bunch of pictures. Here is one of my favorites in B&W.

Thanks +Darcee McCutcheon I have not been on G+ in weeks (maybe months). Finding shooting time has been really difficult as of late so thankfully the challenge is from the Archive.

I'm gonna invite +jerry king  to play along. I know he has some good images in the archive. This picture is a portrait if my son JC taken this summer. All earlier versions were in Color (as it really is nice like that as well) but i just converted it a few weeks ago to do a set of four B&W 16x20's of all four kids. They came out great.

Day 1 Round 1

#fivedayblackandwhitechallenge

The Rules

1.  post a black and white version of an archive image, or a new one, daily for 5 days
2.  tag the person from whom you received the invitation
3.  invite a new victim nominee to join in on each new day

You download some software, set up your backup and away you go. The first back up can take days, weeks, or months depending on how much data you have but once it is up in thier cloud storage, anytime you add new data to your local hard drive it adds it to the cloud archive immediately. Currently I have about 1 Terabyte on Crashplan. This is almost entirely photos and videos.

Well, yesterday I woke up to a dead external drive that housed my primary data set for (Photos and videos) for my Adobe Lightroom catalog. This data represents 14 years worth of pictures which includes all my irreplaceable family pictures and paid work. My back up plan is as follows. I keep all my photos on an external drive under a single directory structure. I then back that up to a second external drive which is a mirror archive of the primary drive. In addition I back all of this up to the Crashplan infrastructure so I have off site copies. While the hard drive failure is a pain, it certainly is not (and should not be) a surpirse. Anything that spins at 5400 RPM for 2-3 years is bound to fail. One day we will all have affordable SSD drives with no moving parts but they will still be subject to errors and electrical spikes etc. Anyhow, I managed the backups using the Crashplan software. It checks for changes every 15 minutes and keeps both the second hard drive and the cloud data set up to date. Of course I was concerned with the failure but had confidence in the plan I had in place.

So now the fun starts. I go out and buy a new primary drive and go to restore the data set from the secondary drive. Uh, Oh! All the data appears to be on the second drive but it is not giving me the option of that drive as a restore point in the Crashplan software. I know I still have all the data in the cloud at Crashplan but it would literally take 14 days to download a TB worth of images. To restore from a local hard drive would take 10-12 hours. Crashplan does have the option to mail you an external hard drive with all your data if you need them to, but it is money I would rather not spend if I don't have to. So....I look up the support page and read through all the help documents. Nothing seems to help. The only option I have left is to call Crashplan support. In the current environment of "offshore" support I was not expecting a good experience. I pick up the phone at 5:15 EST on a Sunday. Within two minutes I am talking to a live human being and they appear to be US based. I explain my problem and she immediately sends me to Tier 2 support. I work in a service provider environment so I was pleased that the rep knew this was above her level of support and immediately sent me to a software expert. Less than 2-3 minutes go by and the phone is picked up by Tim P. He listened to my problem, logged into my account to see how it was set up and then asked to take remote control of my PC. I gave him permission and he went to work. He decided it seemed like an error in the back up data base cache files. He deleted all the old cache files and told me to let it resynchronize. I knew that would take all night so he told me he would send me an email with his contact info and a ticket number. Let it sync and then see if the data was available as a restore point. This morning I woke up to the data being correctly synced and the second external hard drive being available as a restore archive. Estimated time to restore 10 hours. Way better than the two weeks to download (though it is priceless to know that is still an option if i need it!).

The long and short of it is this, if you don't have a back up plan you should. If your data doesn't exist in at least three places (with physical diversity) it doesn't exist. For the $5 a month I pay to Crashplan I honestly was not expecting much in terms of live support. I can say the support I recieved far exceeded my expectations. It's not often we write about good experiences with service providers, but I cant put a price on how valuable this data is to me (14 years of photography), and how well Crashplan and Code42 responded to my needs. If you lost all of your family photos going back to your first digital camera in 2000 how much would you be willing to pay to retrieve them? For me it would be a lot. The good news is it looks like I don't have to worry about that. I now have a fully restored data set on a  new primary hard drive. I am upgrading my back up drive to accomodate more capacity and all the while I know I have an offsite data set if things happen to go really badly. Well done Crashplan. I can't thank you enough for the service you provide. Well worth the small amount it costs for the peace of mind you provide!

Fishing Emerald Isle NC

I have a few different versions of this picture over the years. My son is really good with a casting net. I think i bought this net six or seven years ago for $30. I can't even imagine how many times it has been thrown. JC can throw it for days on end, always with anticipation of treasures pulled from the sea. He never gets tired of it. I never really get tired of taking this picture.

Summertime

When my life gets crazy sometimes it is important to just stop and enjoy the moment. My daughter never seems to have a problem with that. She finds the magic and wonder in just about everything. Where did that go? I think it was "taught" out of me at some point along the way. Once in a while i find it. Mostly through my kids.

Riley and Me

This year on our annual beach trip to Emerald Island Riley was 3 1/2. She has more courage then sense. She is learning to swim on the pool but we still make her wear the swimmy when in the ocean. What i found was that if i get behind the body board and hook my thumbs into the arm rings on her swimmy i can lock her onto the Boogie Board. Well i did this and took her out past the breakers and we started riding waves all the way into the shore. She LOVED it. My last three days there we spent the entire time body surfing. My sister Debbie was good enough to use my camera to take some shots of us. Its rare that i am in many pictures. This one will be a family treasure for the ages.

The Scarab

Yesterday I took my kids to the High Museum in Atlanta to see the Dream Car show. It's a show that's on exhibit until September I believe. There 16 or 17 of the coolest Prototype cars I have ever seen. Most of them were older but a few new ones. This one is the Scarab. It looks to be the first Mini Van. I think it was just about 30 years ahead of it's time. I will post more pictures over the next few days. I went armed with my newest toy a Sony #rx100m3   I am simply stunned but what this camera can do not just for a compact, but for a camera in general.

Topsail Beach NC - I went to do some sunrise shots. It was probably 40 degrees out. The sunrise was a bit lame but then the surfers came out. It was fun to watch them enjoy themselves but you couldn't have paid me to go in that water in February.

Having been so busy lately i have not been surfing pictures on G+ as much as I have done in the past. One photographer that always stands out to me with his wonderful portraits is +Doug Brewer They are rarely what i would call "fancy" but always real and with lots of context to tell you more about the subject. If you like good portraiture go check out Doug's stream. You wont be dissapointed. Please comment on the original thread.

Blood Mountain In Ice

Yesterday i had to go see a customer in Blairsville Georgia. We drive up over Blood Mountain which is very close to the Southern head end of the Appalachain Trail. As we came to the top of the mountain it was fogged in and the fog had frozen to everything. It was an incredible scene. We were in a hurry and i struggled to grab a few quick pictures with my phone. Unfortunately it is a week attempt to portray how cool it was.

Nothing Lasts

Walking through  Old Roswell Cemetary in Roswell GA, it dawned on me (seeing this headless and handless monument) that not even the monuments to ourselves last. The best we can hope for is to be remembered for a couple of generations. Maybe our likeness has been captured in a print somewhere. As we move into the digital age that becomes less and less likely. I try to print a family book each year so in future generations there will actually be a physical record of the people in my life. I go through great pains to back up all the pictures i take but wonder what will happen to them when i am gone. I imagine the pictures that are not printed somewhere will vanish at the flick of a switch at some point in time. I guess it leads me to believe that my best bet is to make a positive impact on somebody around me today. It is not physically tangible but probably the most enduring... more »

Otto and Mike of Chap's Chow Rescue - Last night after work I met Otto and Mike at Lenox park for a few pictures. Otto came from Miami Dade dog pound before Christmas. He had a badly mangled front leg and some issues with his coat. Mike went and got him (Mike has been doing this for 35 years and Chap's placed 56 dogs last year) Otto had to have his front leg removed and got shaved to help clear up his coat. He is a very sweet dog in need of a home. I took a lot of pictures but only got a few as he was perpetual motion. He doesnt seem to be bothered much that by his injury. He also didnt care that I wanted him to sit in front of some nice backgrounds. He was sweet as could be. If you are interested in adopting or fostering please check out Chap's Chow Rescue on FB or Petfinder. Chap's is located in Atlanta but will place pets out of state.

Stranger Portrait #8 - Andy

I met Andy while doing some landscape pictures out at the beach this past weekend on Topsail Island NC. It was a cold february morning and the beach was empty. As the sun came up the surfer's came out. We talked about surfing and surf photography and Any's 10 year old sun who was already in the freezing water. I asked to do a quick portrait and Andy obliged.

Urban Nature - Blue Heron Lenox Park Atlanta

I work right on the edge of this park and often walk through. This guy is a resident but he usually never lets me get close and I dont usually shoot with a telephoto so usually the pictures I get are never shared. The other day however he let me walk up nice and close and even walked back and forth a few times in front of my framing object, the underside of the bridge. I could have done without the trees in the frame but i was just happy to be close.
