Georges Pauly14,521Thomas HawkShared publicly  -  30 Aug 2013 2500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 2 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Yesterday I shared last name A-Da.  This one , part 2 of 5, today, represents Da-Ho.  I'll share the remaining three next week.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 3, 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpn*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of domain errors.  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-01 19:56:06482204CC G+

Gailen Mapes39,899Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera D-F - 2 of 14Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 500 members.I am now sharing one circle per day, for the reason see:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/posts/RrPNTzHhQuHAs before these circles are photographers that I admire. They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to August 15th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting JAugust 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday  #sharedcircles  #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle  #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle  #handpickedcircles Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles creat2013-08-16 10:17:341624610CC G+

Horizons: Over on Tumblr

Google+ has always (imho) sucked at presenting sets of photographs, though its possible the recently announced 'story' features will help in this regard.

Tumblr on the other hand handles photo-sets very elegantly.  I put together a set of five of my favourite photographs from my Horizons series which I've posted on Tumblr.

Those with long memories and long participation on Google+ might recognize this set as the one I used as my banner back when the banner was designed to show multiple photographs.

Wide View, Iona Beach, 2013

In a recent conversation +Stephen Cairns asked if I ever cropped to wider formats like 16:9 or 2:1.  The short answer is that I rarely do.  I tend to see things in squares and verticals - more up and down than left to right.  But I also make a lot of photographs with an emphasis on the horizon line, which often lends itself to a more panoramic presentation.  Here's one I found while trawling the archives that I had indeed cropped to 16:9.

EDIT: Well, I suppose I can also tag this one for #minimalmonday  and +Olivier Du Tré - though it doesn't quite feel in the spirit of things given that I took the photo a decade ago and I've shared it on Google+ before.  But folks who like minimal may appreciate it.

Resting at the Seawall, Vancouver, 2014

I like street photography.  At its best it feels like visual music to me.

I rarely include people in my photographs.  I think of myself as photographing urban landscapes.  But sometimes if things present themselves I will include people - though I always feel a bit intrusive doing so.  Which of course, explains why I would never make a good street photographer myself.

Mutual Admiration Societies

Some folks have been discussing a feeling of ennui towards their photography in general and their experience on Google+ and possibly other social networks.  In my experience this seems to be almost inevitable.  And it usually passes.

I've been involved off and on in photographic communities since about 2002.  One pattern that always emerges is mutual admiration societies.  Groups of people naturally coalesce around common interests and aesthetic tastes.  They support each others photographs through the mechanisms the site provides (likes, comments, ratings).  Sometimes these societies evolve into cliques and sometimes the appearance of collusion manifests into people gaming or at least exploiting the system.  This in turn often leads to some hand-wringing and heated discussions.

But mostly, its just human nature.  Some of the people you meet become friends.  And its natural that you seek out their photographs.  When people comment on your photographs it is normal and perhaps even good manners to feel some obligation to reciprocate.  Google+ even encourages the formation of societies in how it prioritizes the placement of content in the streams: the people you interact with most appear first.

Eventually, the societies seem to burn out.  The social obligations of participation can start to feel overwhelming.  It seems like you are spending more time meeting these obligations than you are taking photographs.  And you find yourself wondering how much of the 'response' you are getting is simply due to mutual back-slapping?  The societies also have norms which can start to feel constraining if you start to venture into new territory.  For example, when I started to venture away from nature photography into other things, I naturally drifted away from some communities I participated in - though not without a little pain and angst.  At the same time, some of the friendships I made transcended these communities.

I'm not sure I have any real advice other than to just do something different when it stops being enjoyable.   Its one of those first world problems that people seem to weather just fine.  I always seem to be participating in a few communities/mutual admiration societies - though I like to think my participation has become more measured and I'm less emotionally invested.  I try to stay true to myself.

About the photograph.  It was selected as a Photograph of the Week on photo.net in 2004.  It seemed like quite a big deal at the time.  And the internet still remembers it: http://photo.net/photo-of-the-week-discussion-forum/009g5C

It was interesting to read through the discussion again.

P4, Vancouver, 2014

A few days ago I posted a square crop of this image taken from the top part of the frame: http://goo.gl/02C42I.  This is the original frame and the way I originally envisioned it.  I was quite pleased when I first took it, but in reviewing it afterwards I find myself going back and forth on it.

Its obviously more complex than the original frame, which is ok because I'm sort of in a 'complex' mind set these days.  Compositionally, I think the elements hang together quite well and the depth illusion of the top part is still present.  The square crop places more focus on the illusion but I'm not completely sold on it either.  It feels awkwardly cropped on the bottom and it feels like it is 'free floating' which I tend to dislike somewhat.

When I try to winnow a collection of images down to the Truly Worthy I try to be ruthless.  Lately, I've adopted the refrain when in doubt, leave it out.

I've noticed that when push comes to shove I prefer the images that are - for lack of a better description - three dimensional.  That is, the ones where the foreground, mid-ground and background are all visible and integral to the structure of the photograph.  This as compared to something like items on a wall - where the subject matter primarily lies in a single, two dimensional plane.

Such a preference also tends to re-enforce itself.  Once most of the images in a collection have a particular style, anything that doesn't conform to that style tends to feel out of place.  And it also starts to guide my preferences while I'm out photographing - I find myself spending most of my timeseeki... more »

An intense sunset reflected in the mud and water.  This was taken during the summer when there was still a reasonable amount of water in Bittern Lake.

Stained, Bittern Lake, Alberta, 2004

I'm going to share a few photographs from Bittern Lake over the next couple of days - a little min-series.  Astute observers with long memories may have seen all of them before, but I've never grouped them as a series.  This one taken around the same time as the previous one in October.

Prairie Waters: Bittern Lake

2004 was the most intense period of photography for my Prairie Waters series of photographs.  While Cooking Lake was the most frequent destination (primarily due to proximity), Bittern Lake was another lake I visited frequently.

In the fall of 2004, the shallow lake was dry and covered with interesting patterns.  Some days I was fortunate to time my visits with dramatic clouds drifting through the big Alberta sky.

Cooking Lake, Alberta, 2004

Sort of a companion photograph to the beach scene I posted yesterday.  I thought of this photograph when I was framing the Iona beach one.  Though its a decade ago I still remember wading through the water to make this photograph.

Like the photograph of the beach scene this one is also unusual in that it is looking a back at the shore and the beautiful fall foliage.  I have taken many photographs from this shore but most of them looking back towards the lake.

Along the Beach, Iona Beach, 2014

One of the advantages of arriving early in the morning to a falling tide is that you get a nice, clean, foot-print free beach to work with!

I rarely make photographs looking down the beach.  In part, I don't like the way it tends to lead your eye out of the frame.  But also, the dunes are a messy collection of drift wood and grasses - interesting to photograph in their own right but not as part of a wide angle view.

In this perspective, there is a nice hook in the beach to keep the user from falling out of the frame and the dune chaos is small in the frame.  In fact, the clump of bushes provides a nice punctuation point where the lines int he sky and sand converge.

The low framing of the scene accentuates the lines formed by the clouds which are (mostly) fading con-trails.  Iona Beach is located right besidethe V... more »

The low framing of the scene accentuates the lines formed by the clouds which are (mostly) fading con-trails.  Iona Beach is located right beside the Vancouver airport.  So, one of the other features of photographing there in the morning is that there are a lot of planes flying in and out of Vancouver filling what would otherwise have been a mostly clear blue sky with con-trails.___

Sun, Seaweed and Sand

Wait - what?  Yes, that's right I'm posting to #minimalmonday  +Olivier Du Tré two weeks in a row!

I'd question whether this qualifies as truly minimal - there are a lot of lines and forms and a variety of vibrant colours.  At the same time, it feels like its a photograph of 'nothing much' other than patterns writ large.
