BIG FUN Education606READING WITHOUT BORDERS is a new Community that matches volunteers with students for 1-on-1 reading Hangouts On Air. We believe in giving more students 1-on-1 attention and sharing our love of a topic through reading.  A lot of teachers have signed up on behalf of their students. This summer, we are actively recruiting Plussers with 20 minutes a week to spare. We haven't sorted out all the details, but come and hear our thoughts. Help us leverage the power of Hangouts for good. Space Fan News!5,864,907Hello Space Fans! If there's one question that +Tony Darnell and +Scott Lewis have been asked more than any, it's "what telescope should I buy?". With the holidays in full swing, many are eager to either go buy the biggest, most expensive telescope they can or just find a local Super Duper Mart, buying what they have there. With so many things to consider along with some potentially confusing terminology being used, it's extremely easy to be overwhelmed as to what you should do when first buying a telescope.  Well have no fear, your favorite dynamic duo will be hosting a Hangout On Air to help answer any questions and give some helpful tips, tricks and teasers into the best way to get started in observing the Universe! As a special treat, +Gary Gonnella, +Stuart Forman and +Peter Lake will also be joining the hangout to share their experience in getting into the amazing world of citizen astronomy and astrophotography. These three are powerhouses when it comes to observing from home, on the road or even remotely, and they will undoubtedly be able to bring a lot of information to the show! So how do ask your questions? You can always leave your questions and comments here in the Event page, as well as on YouTube when the show goes live. Also, the Q&A app will be in use while live, so you can interact directly with the crew! (Just like downtown)Beginner's guide to buying a telescope2013-12-19 03:00:00181

Can false memories for both pleasurable and aversive events be artificially created? What about false memories for more than just contexts — false memories for objects, food or other mice? These are the once seemingly sci-fi questions that can now be experimentally tackled in the lab.” Check out our second Geek Week Hangout on Thursday, Aug 8 at 2 PM: http://goo.gl/EqHLtX Faking It: Neuroscience of Memory at MIT2013-08-06 20:00:0050

Hubble Space Telescope6,320,436The #Hubble Space Telecope is poised to provide us with new images of Comet #ISON as it approaches the inner solar system.  In the coming months, we'll get views of the comet from a perspective only #Hubble can provide. Here's the url to the #ISON  blog: http://hubblesite.org/go/ison The approach of this comet has generated a lot of excitement, it is going to pass extremely close to the sun and when it does, astronomers tell us this may be among the brightest comets we've ever seen hanging in our night sky. Or will it be a dud? Well, we're going to talk about that and a whole lot more: Is it going to hit us? Where did it come from? How big is it? What's it made of? What's so great about comets anyway? What if it breaks up?  Will the pieces hit us? How can I get a comet named after me? Is Scott's head a comet nucleus? Please join +Tony Darnell, +Alberto Conti and +Scott Lewis as they discuss these and any other questions you can think to ask to some of the planetary scientists working at the Space Telescope Science Institute. We'll have +Max Mutchler , Dr. +Bonnie Meinke and Dr. Jian-Yang Li on hand to tell us what Hubble is expected to see, how it will see it and we'll also go into the topic of comets in general. +Zolt Levay Will also be onhand to discuss recent Hubble images of ISON. 30 Days of Web Dev >> Day 1: GitHub Pages
I'm at the start of a career change: I want to try doing freelance web development. I think. :) In any case, I need to get myself to actually make stuff so I figured I'd learn by creating a website or web app every day this month.

Here's day 1: http://learningnerd.github.io/30DaysOfWebDev/day1/

All the code:

Eh, it's better than nothing. I have to start somewhere. :) I was very much inspired by this similar project: http://jenniferdewalt.com/

To anyone who knows anything about web development: I'm all ears for any advice, inspiration, horror stories, cool links, anything you've got! :)

I participated in my first hackathon this weekend for the National Day of Civic Hacking, and somehow our team won 2 of the prizes! It was really fun, and I'm sad that it's over. The sense of community and camaraderie developed within our team was really something special. :)

The Octobass: 12-foot instrument of awesomeness!

"The 12-foot tall Octobass plays so low, it's lowest string when played fully open is barely in the human hearing registry. To play it, a musician must stand on a stool and use leavers to fret the notes. It resides at the new Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, and is the only one in North America."

What do you all think of the new feature so far? I've been testing it out over the last month and so far I've found it really useful! See my first collection here: https://plus.google.com/u/1/collection/4SSsR :)

Introducing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic

Our happiest Google+ users are those who connect with others around shared interests and passions. So we set out to give people a place to express the things they love. Today, we’re announcing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic.

Every collection is a focused set of posts on a particular topic, providing an easy way for you to organize all the things you’re into. Each collection can be shared publicly, privately, or with a custom set of people. Once you create your first collection, your profile will display a new tab where other people can find and follow your collections.

Posts in collections you follow will appear in your Home stream, with a link to easily jump right into the collection so you can get to similar content from that author. Collections give you a great way to find more of the stuff you love from the people you follow.

Collections is available on Android and the web, and iOS is coming later. For Android users, make sure to update your Google+ app to get access to Collections.

For inspiration on interesting topics, check out our Featured Collections page here: g.co/collections

Create your collections today and share what you love.___What do you all think of the new feature so far? I've been testing it out over the last month and so far I've found it really useful! See my first collection here: https://plus.google.com/u/1/collection/4SSsR :)

30 Days of Web Dev >> Day 28: Local Web Storage
http://learningnerd.github.io/30DaysOfWebDev/day28/

Today I learned how to use local web storage with HTML5 and JavaScript's beforeunload event to make my timer work even if you close and reopen your web browser! Unfortunately, it's still buggy because I didn't have much free time outside of work today. :(

I can't seem to stay away from JavaScript! Today I made a little timer inspired by the pomodoro technique. Hurrah! I also learned that I'm terrible with time-related programming logic. It was strangely difficult to wrap my mind around the simple math I needed to do with elapsed time and remaining time. Durrrr. But I figured it out. :)

I didn't have time to make a GIF today and the algorithm isn't done yet, but hey at least I learned some stuff and had fun! There's a lot more I could add next, but all the basic features are done! When I look back to last week, I realize just how much I've been learning! And I'm not even bored of it yet! ;) Maybe my plan to switch careers from communications/writing/PR to web or software development isn't so crazy after all. It's far from done, but it basically works now! One of the next things I want to try to figure out is how to determine with certainty whether another ship can fit on the board or not. Just seems like an interesting problem. :)

30 Days of Web Dev >> Day 14: Recursive Randomness
http://learningnerd.github.io/30DaysOfWebDev/day14/

Watching a set of rules take on a life of its own is a strange and beautiful thing. Randomly placing ships of different sizes on my battleship board was hard! I ended up writing a recursive function, and the strangest thing about it is that recursion seemed to be the most intuitive solution, even though I'm not sure I've ever done it before.

I put a lot more time into today's project, more than the last couple days combined. Despite the increased frustration, the extra momentum makes me want to put even more time into it. Because it's also a lot of fun!

Stephen Hawking Sings Monty Python Galaxy Song

"The song, which is the title track to “Monty Python – The Meaning of Live”, was originally written for the 1983 film, “Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life”. It has been re-recorded with the lyrics sung by Professor Stephen Hawking."

"Written by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, the song is an intricate and informative lecture on the enormity of the Universe fashioned into a bewitching and, above all, highly amusing pop song."

Yeah, yeah, I missed day 10. Oops. But perfectionism isn't the goal, here. As long as I'm learning and doing more than I was doing before I started this project, then I'm happy enough!

Today I didn't even finish what I started, but that's partly because I spent the afternoon running a JavaScript workshop and playing play.elevatorsaga.com with about 20 people. Now that was fun! One day I hope to make my own version of that game. :) In the meantime, baby steps. Baby steps. Baby steps...

I'm exhausted. I keep having days where I really don't feel like working on this project after I get through everything else. But so far so good! This way I'm still learning a tiny bit even on my worst days. :) That's a lesson I'm continually relearning: the power of consistent, small steps.

30 Days of Web Dev >> Day 7: Loop de Loop

Nested loops are fun! I got a little stuck on the math for determining which squares are even or odd, but then it clicked and everything worked like magic! I love that feeling, when everything just clicks. That feeling is worth the endless hours of frustration that often lead up to it, and it's probably the reason I like programming in the first place. :)

30 Days of Web Dev >> Day 4: Strings
http://learningnerd.github.io/30DaysOfWebDev/day4/

I was busy having fun today and teaching a workshop on exactly what I learned on day 1 of this project (GitHub Pages), so I just barely made my deadline by doing this between 11pm and midnight! Turns out, it doesn't take much time at all to learn something completely new, and even if it is pretty basic stuff, it feels like an accomplishment. :)

Today I learned how to use a couple new JavaScript functions for manipulating strings of text -- in my case, text about cupcakes and cowbells! It's pretty fun seeing "added more cowbell" as my latest commit message.

Today I just reviewed how to use CSS floats to move around boxes. Oh, and I got an excuse to use BaconIpsum.com! :) I didn't do much today because I was too busy having fun, but at least I did learn something! (The part I learned: putting floats inside of other floats. Like whoa, dude!)

30 Days of Web Dev >> Day 2: Fizz Buzz!
http://learningnerd.github.io/30DaysOfWebDev/day2/

Today I made sure I still understand how to solve fizz buzz, a common interview problem. Read more about it:

http://blog.codinghorror.com/why-cant-programmers-program/
http://dave.fayr.am/posts/2012-10-4-finding-fizzbuzz.html
http://rosettacode.org/wiki/FizzBuzz

Getting the fizz buzz to work took me a few minutes, but then I spent a bunch of time reviewing how to use JavaScript functions to add and edit HTML elements. And then I reviewed some CSS to turn my list into a grid. And then I wasted a bunch of time resizing my browser to see how the fizz/buzz patterns change! :)

All the code:
https://github.com/LearningNerd/30DaysOfWebDev

Eh, it's better than nothing. I have to start somewhere. :) I was very much inspired by this similar project: http://jenniferdewalt.com/

To anyone who knows anything about web development: I'm all ears for any advice, inspiration, horror stories, cool links, anything you've got! :)

My coworkers and I might get to do this new project!

Please vote for us! And share your thoughts -- we have a crazy, ambitious idea and we want to figure out how to make it a real thing. :)

Pretending to be a teacher is FUN!
I can't say this enough: don't wait until you're an expert to start teaching others!

You see, I started a meetup group (meetup.com/LearnToCodeLA/) and ran our first workshop this weekend! What a rush! I've never taught a class or anything remotely close to it before, and because I'm completely crazy, I decided to organize and run a computer programming workshop for 35 people! I thought it would be a disaster, but it far exceeded everyone's (admittedly low) expectations, including my own. :)

Except for a couple example links and the overall idea (building a Battleship game with JavaScript), I made everything up on the fly. This was totally unplanned. Organized chaos. I had everyone group-Googling the answers to their own questions as we went along, and I learned right along with them. Win-win! (I'm... more »

I had everyone group-Googling the answers to their own questions as we went along, and I learned right along with them. Win-win! (I'm getting the most out of it, though; I'm learning about programming, public speaking, socializing, teaching, and event planning all at once!)

That said, even though some people thrived on the open-ended nature of this learning experiment, others were definitely a bit lost. I have a lot to learn about learning -- and especially about teaching.

So, to all my genius Google+ friends: got any advice for a newbie? :)___

Google Voice just got native MMS support!

I've been waiting for this for five years! Finally!

Good news, GV users! You can now stay in touch via MMS with Verizon Wireless users. Google Voice now supports MMS messaging with of all major carriers in the US and Canada.

Along with this announcement, we are also adding native MMS support for photo messaging to Google Voice. If you opt in to Google Voice in Hangouts, you can now attach photos to any SMS message and it will be delivered as a native MMS (instead of SMS with a link). Support for group messaging via MMS will be enabled in a future update.
