My daughter, E, and I shot a series of photos last week to go with a song and to also go with a past fb status update of mine. The song was "Santa Monica", by Everclear (and there are already pics on here about that ... or a pic ... or something). The status update said something about the current state of my Sailor language and how I'd have to soon take to drinking cheap Scotch and smoking Pall Malls.

Two important details:

1. I don't smoke.
B. I do not - under any circumstances - drink cheap Scotch.

But somewhere, I picked up this visual of an elderly, kind of badass, woman in Florida, dressing however she wants, cussing a lot, and smoking Pall Malls while drinking cheap Scotch. That visual was too hard to pass up.

So, I dropped the $20 on a pack of Pall Malls (not really... more »

Lessons from the garden (and life)

1. Gardening is addictive. And not cheap. That being said, if you find a good local place (Southern Virginia) with rosemary, please let me know. Thanks!

B. In the last few weeks I have been called cold, snarky, authentic, awesome, a gypsy, cautious, bored, disconnected, intellectual (as an insult, which always confuses me), a hippie, cool, sweet, understanding, compassionate, empathetic, bitchy, a philosopher, buddha, a bullshitter, a rock, and some other things I've forgotten ... both good and bad.

It's all so complex and probably mostly bullshit (the really good and really bad, that is - the average is most likely accurate.) In the garden, it's simple: If it lives, I did good. If it dies, I f'd up.

God, I love simple.

3. For folks, like me, who live mostly in their heads, spending time with plants is pretty wonderful. It forces you to think about right now. They seem to grow in front of your eyes... if you don't appreciate this very moment, you'll totally miss it. Tomorrow morning, they'll be different. Remarkable.

(PS - The spider pic is here for two reasons: 1. It's a really pretty spider. 2. I am no longer terrified of spiders. I probably won't wreck if one descends in front of my face whilst driving. I have actually - calmly - relocated some spiders to more suitable places than my arm or leg or other close vicinity ... without hyperventilating or invoking the name of all known deities.

This is HUGE!)___

psyche

I read this today: "When you are certain that a photograph is not good, throw it in the bin. Tape the best ones higher on the wall, and eventually look at those only (keeping the not-so-good one gets you used to not-so-goodness). Only save the good ones, throw everything else away, because the psyche carries everything one keeps." ~Sergio Lerrain

It's about photography (obviously) but I think it can be applied to much of life. (Not all of life - like people. Remember, sometimes we ARE the bad ones. Yes, even you. Throwing away people is a different topic entirely.)

I tend to get attached to things. Even things that don't work well anymore. (I once had a eulogy for an old hair brush. In its day, it had been a lovely brush. But it began to cut my scalp. Sadness...) More than things, I get attached to ways of thinking. Or, I just get used to... more »

In art, that's deadly. So, I'm working on it. Working on looking at better art. Working on culling through my mediocre images and trashing them. All the while, working on clearing my psyche of the things I've kept that needed to be discarded.

And, hopefully, since my art is an expression of myself, the process will clear out some not-so-good other stuff, too.

Promises

Years ago, I'd made it a goal to someday enter the  BBC VEOLIA Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, but I never have.  I never thought I was good enough.  This year it occurred to me:  if not now, then when?  There might not be another "when."  So, on the last day at the eleventh hour, I quickly submitted 10 images.  Imagine how stunned I was when one of them made it to the final round of judging.  It was not a winner, but I could not have been happier.  My new cover photo is that image.    This is not about the image or me.   This is a reminder that the most important promises are the ones you make to yourself.  Keep them.

If you have not seen the extraordinary winning images from this year, visit http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/whats-on/temporary-exhibitions/wpy/onlineGallery.do___"This is a reminder that the most important promises are the ones you make to yourself.  Keep them." ~Lee Daniels

returning
-------------------------------------------
“Many of us are returning from a long journey during which we were forced to search for things that were of no interest to us. Now we realize that they were false. But this return cannot be made without pain, because we have been away for a long time and feel that we are strangers in our own land. It will take some time to find the friends who also left, and the places where our roots and treasures lie. But this will happen.” ~Paulo Coelho

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inspired by a Facebook post this morning of an Oscar Wilde quote: "Never love anyone who treats you like you're ordinary." Except, my post isn't really about people. Or, at least, it's not all about people.

Also, today = active migraine recovery. If there are glaring grammar errors in the blog post, please - if you love me - tell me. Preferably in a private message. Thank you.

Found some cool lines and light in the brier patch. Then, those dang briers tried to capture my right leg.

There's a life lesson in there somewhere, folks. Probably something about wearing thicker britches.

Wow, G+ ... kinda crazy about long posts, eh?

Just posted a pic with a lengthy write-up and the line count is now beside the "Read more". Because, y'know, we can't see the length of a post when we expand it.

I don't know why I'm kind of creeped out by that. But I am.

filters
-------------------------------------------
My daughter, E, and I shot a series of photos last week to go with a song and to also go with a past fb status update of mine.

So, I dropped the $20 on a pack of Pall Malls (not really... more »

But somewhere, I picked up this visual of an elderly, kind of badass, woman in Florida, dressing however she wants, cussing a lot, and smoking Pall Malls while drinking cheap Scotch. That visual was too hard to pass up.

So, I dropped the $20 on a pack of Pall Malls (not really $20 - but it felt like it. Egads!) and found some cheap bourbon in the pantry. (I couldn't waste money on cheap Scotch. Sorry.) Then, we dragged a footlocker down to a beach and confused the fisherman.

It was a glorious day.

I kept thinking I'd do a blog post. But I haven't yet. And I'm tired of waiting to post this shot just because I'm nervous about the smoking visual. People react strongly to the idea of others smoking. I get it. It's unhealthy. (And the smell permeates every durn thing ... srsly.) But, it's nothing to judge someone on.

And that's why I'm posting this here even though I kept thinking I wouldn't ... thinking I'd bury it in my blog post somewhere only my diehard peeps might scroll.

I don't like the filters we see folks through sometimes. Tattoos, cigarettes, high heels, Birkenstocks, granola, potato chips, hummus, fast food, Bud Light (fine, I'm kinda judge-y about Bud Light), sweet tea, Wranglers, yoga pants, Ford, Chevy (y'all be nice now)...

We size folks up based on the dumbest crap.

You know what I see about this pic? I see that my daughter stole my sunglasses, used them as a filter, and made a very compelling image. (Please note the Nikon reflection. That's cool.) I see that my bottom jaw juts out unattractively when I try to smoke. And I remember a very cool day that made room for all kinds of life convos between mom and daughter that weren't fueled by convincing one another that the filters we use to view the world are, unquestioningly, correct.

If you scroll past this shot and choose not to read the post with it, you might draw some wrong conclusions. That's life-y. Image management is a big deal. (And it was a big deal LONG before social media. Don't even...) Who is deciding what the goal of our personal image management is? How do we know whether or not what we think we portray is actually what others see ... or even care about seeing?

I don't know. I do know I've been totally surprised by the reactions to smoking. And I'm totally stoked about the images E and I were able to make together. Discomfort, nervousness, excitement, creative satisfaction ... all in one experience.

Edit for G+: My Facebook crowd is quite different from my G+ crowd. A lot of the stuff about being judge-y regarding stupid crap relates to my local folks (rural Southern US). BUT ... I'm sure there's stupid crap the rest of us are judge-y about. So, fill in the appropriate blanks with your own shiz. Thanks!
