With +Tesla Motors announcement of their new "ludicrous speed" option which enables the car to go from 0-60mph in 2.8seconds, I'm curious to know how fast that is compared to a modern F1 car?

How about it +Sauber F1 Team. Fancy sharing that little stat here. Or maybe set up a race with +Tesla Motors and share the video ;)

Google+ back tracks. Is it the right move though?

Everything in its right place
When we launched Google+, we set out to help people discover, share and connect across Google like they do in real life. While we got certain things right, we made a few choices that, in hindsight, we’ve needed to rethink. So over the next few months, we’re going to be making some important changes. Here’s more about what you can expect:

When you get hold of the latest +Google Maps for Android update, go checkout the new timeline feature. It's basically a location history of where you have been each day (a similar feature was available previously but its name alludes me). It's awesome. One bit of magic I have found though is it even integrates your photos in to the timeline of where you have visited.

Absolutely love it!

So Google+ Photos isn't being killed entirely? Or is it? I don't know! This just confused me even more.

I wanted to clarify a couple of points regarding yesterday’s announcement (https://goo.gl/TL0l6j) and provide some additional context:

1. The great photo and video sharing service that’s part of Google+ is unaffected. You can continue to post photos and videos, and your followers will be able to comment and +1 as before. No change.

2. All of the photos, videos, and albums you have already shared on Google+, including their posts, comments, and +1s are also unaffected. An easy way to find these is to visit the Photos tab of your Profile page.

3. The private photo management component of Google+, which includes backup, editing, creations, private album management (album management for shared content is still available on Google+), and sharing to other apps, is being replaced by Google Photos.

I sincerely appreciate for many of you #3 is still a hard pill to swallow. And I promise we don’t take decisions like this one lightly. The reality is that maintaining both Google+ Photos (the private photo management component of Google+) and Google Photos poses several challenges. Most notably, it is confusing to users why we have two offerings that virtually do the same thing, and it means our team needs to divide its focus rather than working on building a single, great user experience.

We are working very hard to bring all the best features of Google+ Photos to Google Photos, and this focus will allow us to deliver even more features at a much faster pace.___So Google+ Photos isn't being killed entirely? Or is it? I don't know! This just confused me even more.

Infinite change from +Google strikes again. This time Google+ photos gets shut down, but Google Photo's takes over (Yes there is more difference than just the +).

In the mean time Picasa Web Albums gets resurrected to handle the photos shared in Google Hangouts.

All I have to say about all of this is, what on earth is going on! When will you get photos right and stick with it?

Goodbye Google+ Photos, hello +Google Photos!

In May, we launched Google Photos as the home for all your photos and videos. With Google Photos you can store unlimited high quality photos and videos for free, find photos fast, and see them organized by what matters to you. Plus, you can bring moments to life and share anywhere with anyone.

In an effort to ensure everyone has the best photos experience we can deliver, on August 1st we’ll start to shut down Google+ Photos -- initially on Android, and soon thereafter on the Web and iOS.

If you’re still using Google+ Photos, now is a great time to make the switch. You may have seen a prompt in Google+ Photos on Android with a link to download the new Google Photos. Don’t worry, all your photos and videos will still be saved and available after you switch to the new, stand-alone Google Photos app. With the new app you’ll still be able to backup, edit, and share your photos and videos, with unlimited storage, automatic organization, and more.

Download the new Google Photos today for uninterrupted access to all your photos, videos and albums.  If you don’t update to the new Google Photos, Google+ Photos on Android will soon stop working, but your photos and videos will still remain safely stored and available via http://photos.google.com or for export using Google Takeout.

This piece of news will send shivers down many F1 fans spines. Although Bianchi wasnt at the front of the grid, and probably didn't have the largest of fan bases compared with some, following the accident the whole F1 community warmed to him. For this was a man who was living his dream racing in the pinnacle series of Motorsport. He has now passed away as a result of following his passion.

For many fans, like myself, this is the first death of an F1 driver that they would have seen. We all know about Senna, but for us younger fans, we actually knew Bianchi.

His head struck the recovery vehicle which put Biachi in a coma for the past 9 months and has now led to his passing. In my opinion nobody could have predicted this. This was a case of serious bad luck imo. Not one single factor played an important role in this. Having said that, now that this has occurred it should never happen again. A flaw has been found in the safety of F1 and it is for the higher powers that be to put in place more bullet proof procedures.

Yes +Hammonds Furniture, so far your kitchen design and installation service has fallen far short of acceptable let alone impressive. At the moment it is near laughable, yet sadly we are at the point of no return as my kitchen is half removed yet only now are the installers figuring out what work is required.

From the outset, the design was incorrect with wall cupboards shown at different heights, cupboards with dead spaces instead of proper corner units, and a sink that doesn't fit inside it's carcass. These are just a select few mistakes, but I let them pass as we still had the survey stage to iron things out, so I paid the deposit and agreed that ALL works are to be carried out by them, even the tiling.

So the project manager attended site and surveyed the design. Yep it didn't fit in to the kitchen it was designed for. Excellent. So I redesigned parts of the kitchen myself and told them what solutions were required. Happy days I thought, so I paid the final payment for the materials. But now I wish I hadn't. Even though I signed paperwork with the agreed amendments, I've never received a copy of the final drawings.

Next the installers carry out a pre visit. He's all happy so the works commences the following week. That brings us to Wednesday of this week. Half my kitchen gets removed, and the walls and ceilings scheduled to be plastered the following day. When I query who is taking care of the electrics before plastering is done I get blank stares. This is when I knew things were going to become a disaster. And I was right.

It has taken 3 days for the penny to drop that my appliances need electricity to work in their new locations among other issues such as plumbing. And now the installer wants to discuss additional costs.

So this is where I'm at. It has taken three professionals three visits to not work out what is required to install a kitchen. Yet it took one man (me) to realise that all three haven't got a clue.

Sadly though, due to how +Hammonds Furniture get paid, the only people at risk are the customer and the installers who sub contract to Hammonds but get paid directly by the customer.

And where is the project manager whilst all this is going on? Do let me know if you find him as I currently he is missing in action on this project!

Who knows how this could end. Probably with me carrying out the installation myself.___

Yet another amazing product under research from Google X

Our hands are fast and precise instruments, but so far, we haven’t been able to capture their sensitivity and accuracy in user interfaces. However, there’s a natural vocabulary of hand movements we’ve learned from using familiar tools like smartphones, and Project Soli aims to use these motions to control other devices. For example, your hand could become a virtual dial to control volume on a speaker, or a virtual touchpad to browse a map on a smartwatch screen.

To make our hands self-contained interface controls, the team needed a sensor that could capture submillimeter motions of overlapping fingers in 3D space. Radar fits all these requirements, but the necessary equipment was just a little…big.

So the Project Soli team created a gesture radar small enough to fit in a wearable device. It’s a new category of interaction sensor, running at 60GHz; one that can capture motions of your fingers at resolutions and speeds that haven’t been possible before—up to 10,000 frames per second. To get there, the team had to reinterpret traditional radar, which bounces a signal from an object and provides a single return ping. From a hardware and computation perspective, this would have been challenging to recreate on a small scale. So to capture the complexity of hand movements at close range, Soli illuminates the whole hand with a broad radar beam, and estimates the hand configuration by analyzing changes in the returned signal over time.

The team built the first prototype, a 5x5mm piece of silicon, in just 10 months. They’re working on finalizing the development board (prototype) and software API for release to developers later this year. Watch Ivan Poupyrev, Technical Project Lead, talk about the project at I/O here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpbWQbkl8_g&feature=youtu.be&t=10m15s

You can reach out to the team at projectsoli@google.com if you’d like to get involved. Watch the video to meet the team and learn more.  #ATAP #ProjectSoli ___Yet another amazing product under research from Google X

For those that may have seen my previous post re auto backup of photos (an io2015 request), see below clarification on how the Google Photos backup feature effects your images and storage quota.

Long and short of it is:

High Qualify always compresses your photos but doesn't use your storage quota

Original Quality doesn't touch your photos but will always use your storage quota

So if you want your photos preserved in their original format forever, do not use the high quality setting, but then be prepared to have to buy extra storage capacity at some point.

For me, I'm happy to have photos taken on my phone compressed because they aren't that great quality in the first place. But for the serious stuff taken on a DSLR, I don't want them to be irreversibly touched in any way shape or form. Hopefully it is possible to do... more »

+Mike Crumpler asked about difference between backing up high quality photos and original quality photos in the new Google Photos app.

Here's some insights straight from the team!

If you choose High Quality, photos >16MP will be resized to 16MP, and we also do some compression to save space. If your photo is smaller than 16MP, we won't reduce the size but yes the photo may be compressed as well.

If you choose Original, your photo is not touched in any way, and will consume quota regardless of size.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

One of the cool new Chrome OS feature is auto correction for physical keyboards.

This feature is rolling out now with Chrome OS version 43. The gist is that it will automatically correct misspellings as you type, without the need to go back and right-click to use traditional spell check. It appears to be disabled by default, however. If you're the type of person that wants to opt in and give it a spin, I have the full instructions up on Medium.

Please feel free to send feedback to the developers using Alt+Shift+I after you have had a chance to use it.

My plan now is to start over. As collections appear in my stream I will follow the ones that interest me. Hopefully doing all this will keep my entire stream on topic and relevant to my interests, making +Google+ an even more engaging place for me to hang out from time to time.

Wish me luck.

For those that don't know, during Google IO the Google Community Managers get together to carry out requests made by us endearing users. But these requests don't have to be sensible, in fact most of the ones I have seen this year involved a lot of dancing.

To prove my point, as it's day two and I'm sure the requests are dying down, I'm going to dish out one last #io15request for the fun of it. And that is for the community managers to record themselves saying the android slogan of the moment "be together, not the same" but with an English accent. Better still why don't we say that no two community managers can use the same accents :)

Looking forward to seeing whose game for this one. Good luck CMs

Would somebody with some in depth knowledge please explain to me the difference between backing up high quality photos and original quality photos in the new Google Photos app.

I understand the high quality option will compress/convert any photos above 16M pixels to include them in the unlimited free storage quota, but what happens to 10M pixel photos? Are they uploaded in the original quality without compression/conversion because they aren't over 10M pixels or are all photos compressed/converted regardless?

Equally if I select original quality backup and all my photos are uploaded at 10M pixel quality do they still count as free quota or do they not because they aren't compressed/converted in any shape or form?

Could somebody point us (ie me) in the right direction of being able to get hold of cardboard version io15 so that I can try this vr malarkey please.

And if we can't order it, my #io15request is for somebody to pinch one, put it on a plane to Heathrow London and I will then collect it at the airport in the morning :)

Thanks in advance

If you have never seen this before because you don't have a Moto device, you are going to love it.

The first time I watched/played it, I was amazed.

New Google app: Google Spotlight Stories!

Like Motorola Spotlight Player, but with more content, more device compatibility, and IAP support to allow for paid content in the future. Remember, the ATAP team responsible for the Motorola Spotlight player stayed with Google.

OK, I can confirm 100% that this is real! You can crash the messaging app on any iPhone (and the phone itself) by sending it a simple text message.

But please realise that the only way you can then fix your mates phone is to send them a new message. Oops, I didn't know that useful bit of information +Armando Ferreira when I sent it to my manager.

The question is, how long will you make them wait, now that you know 😇😈

This is a new TV show coming to Channel 4 in the UK called "Humans", which is to be aired on June 4th.

The first time I watched the trailer I wondered what on earth it was I was watching. Was it an advertisement for a product? Was it a joke? Neither, it was a new TV show.

At first I was somewhat disturbed by it, but now I'm really intrigued to watch it. Why? Because this is a future I feel we are actually heading towards. I just hope our robotic helpers don't end up looking like humans as they do in the show. That would freak me out!

The show even has this strange website http://www.personasynthetics.com/

It's good to know that the original LG G Watch R will eventually get Wi-Fi support but I can't help but think that the only reason it isn't getting it straight away is to entice people new to the market to buy the newer LG Urbane watch instead of the now lower cost G Watch R.

My Sony Smartwatch 3 is so ready for Android Wear 5.1.1

This morning I couldn't find my watch, and I actually missed it. It felt like my left hand had been cut off (OK, it wasn't quite that bad).

In all seriousness, this was only the second day that I haven't worn it to work since buying it, and it was surprising how much I missed it. I couldn't say to you that the watch is useful in any shape or form, because it doesn't really do anything. But without it, I felt lost. Each time I stepped away form my desk, I felt the need to take my phone with me, where as normally I'd happily leave it on my desk knowing I'd get notifications via my wrist.

So the next step is being able to leave my phone anywhere (more than 10 meters away) knowing the watch is still synced via WiFi. That for me is the single reason I chose the Sony version over all other... more »

If you are tempted by the smartwatch market, but aren't quite sure if it is for you yet. Well this here is an absolute steal at this price. £131

A great device and not a bad price if you want to test the waters. But once you have it, I don't think you'll be replacing with any other model anytime soon. I still love mine, and I haven't got the latest 5.1.1 firmware update yet.

Certainly has a lot of +1s (over half a million), just not from anybody I know yet! It actually strikes me as the sort of company Google would go and buy.

France bans wifi at Nursery' and Primary Schools

This isn't the first time I've heard about this sort of thing. In fact I actually carried out an electrical installation for a product testing facility where they provide SAR ratings for devices. The procedure included strapping a device to a mannequins head and taken measurements from within. So even 15 years ago I knew radiation was being leaked in to our brains. It's no secret.

With more and more devices about, and more and more WiFi access points popping up everywhere, are we slowly poisoning ourselves and our children? And if we are, how can you escape it? WiFi is everywhere, Homes, schools, offices, hotels, trains, planes, retailers, restaurants, high streets, and even beaches. Just about anywhere and everywhere you go you could be putting yourself at risk.

Any now we have wearables so things can only get worse. We are voluntarily strapping emf emitting devices to our bodies. Are we crazy? Are we naive? Does this bother you? Or do you think France is just overreacting? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

The things that Google invest in never ceases to amaze me.

How I'd love to know what other things Google is coming up with behind closed doors. This is why I'm happy to use their services. Sure they make money out of knowing my every movement on the internet, and probably in real life too. But look what they do with it. Just fantastic.

A Wristband that Destroys Cancer Cells

Google has now secured a patent for a potentially cancer cell-destroying wrist-worn device. In combination with the magnetic nanoparticles in Google’s cancer-detecting pill, the device could generate its own magnetic field, allowing it to corral the particles, with targeted cells not far behind. The device will presumably offer a readout of just how cancer cell-saturated your blood is. Think of it like a wearable glucose monitor - only instead of sugar, it’s counting tumor cells.

Sauber Fans, this may be of great interest to you :)

+Sauber F1 Team has decided to create themselves a couple of +Google+ Collections. Head over to their profile now and check them out. Always at the forefront of social media :)

But what this post is really about is something much more exciting, and I'm not sure even Sauber realise this yet. I certainly didn't until just now, but... when you follow a collection, you can also choose to get notified when new content is added.

That's right, if you want instant breaking news from Sauber's "Racing News" collection, head to it now and turn notifications on. This way you can always stay up to date with lap times and other info from all the sessions as soon as it is shared by Sauber, never missing another post again. Just be careful if you are trying to avoid spoilers ever.

Let's hope more teams follow suit!
