Johnny Johnsen5,985#F1Johnny  Circle :I have had some Formula 1 circles this season. Some from them from the one and only +Jens Graikowski  , some from others and some i have made myself. The things that matters for me is that the person in this circle is above average interested in Formula 1. If you do not get many (sometimes to much) post about Formula 1, you are probably in my "Motorsport " circle or or another one :)I want the person in this circle to feel that he or she belong there. If you want to be there but isn`t. Notify me !If you are in there and think this is to much Johnny !!!!! Notify me !  :-)Now Googla is on fire with "Communities" and this is great news for usFormula 1 fans. Now we can move in to the #F1 #Communities and just chat about Formula 1 all winter :-)Here are the links to the one i`m in :  http://bit.ly/VEMMJhhttp://bit.ly/TRWt1PI will also post and share my Formula 1 circle and my Motorsport circle.I hope that Formula 1 2013 season will be THE season for F1 followers on Google Plus. I think communities and the fact that it is so many more members here at the start of the season will make this to a great team.Google Plus will crush FB and be a good addition to Twitter in 2013 season :-)98,5 days left to the start ;)PS: If there is a lot of spelling mistakes, the reason is that Google Translate is not at work today :-)Have a great wintertime, and a fantastic Christmas.Johnny2012-12-08 17:42:33302805
Jens “Google Plus Yoda” Graikowski10,635Last share of the F1 circle (Part two) ...As I have completely changed my circle system and am working exclusively with my "Interaction Ladder" (http://bit.ly/VfSrjs) for incoming and my "Targeted Circles" (http://bit.ly/XSXBoR) for outgoing traffic I have decided to delete even my last themed circle, the #FormulaOne  circle.I believe that creating a #Formula1  community via a circle is impractical and cumbersome. A #GooglePlusPage  is better suited for this endeavour, so if you want to be part of a large #F1 community I recommend you try some of the pages around, like +F1 Circle (the page that belongs to this circle) or +Formula 1 Fans. I will share this circle in two parts (One of the reason that it is cumbersome. You can't share circles larger than 500) so it doesn't get lost for those who are still interested in it. I will delete it from my circles afterwards. This is part two with F1 aficionados from M to Z. You'll find part one further down in my stream.Don't get me wrong! I'll keep on posting about the F1 and I'll do so publicly. You can still all read my Formula 1 posts. If you'd like to be notified of them I'll gladly add you to my Formula 1 targeted circle. Just +1 the first comment underneath this post!I hope we'll all enjoy the last race of the season 2012 and am looking forward to see you all again in 2013.And now go and share this circle all over the place, will ya!Greez,+Jens Graikowski ***************************************************************** #jgformula12012-11-22 23:06:413141047

Max Huijgen27,573Will Red Bull be allowed to race this afternoon? FIA finds fault with their engine mapping suggesting that Red Bull uses illegal torque maps. Technical delegate Jo Bauer put forward his findings after Saturday's qualifying session, claiming that both cars are in breach of the regulations. The effect of the strange looking torque maps is that maximum power is not delivered in the mid RPM ranges suggesting that the exhaust flow is used to influence the aerodynamics. Strictly forbidden after last years 'exhaust-blown diffuser' exploit of the rules. Sanctions could range from grid penalties to exclusion of this race!find below the first F1 circle; I will share the second one in a minute2012-07-22 10:39:5350021215
Martijn van der Meulen4,273Looking for other Nexus owners? Don't fret! Two days ago I started a search for people that love their Nexus device. Hardware that's made in close collaboration with Google, and that provides the Android experience the way it's meant to be experienced. I found quite a few people and curated the Circle, just to make sure you're only adding the best of the best to your personal stream here on Google+.Please add and share this Circle. Enjoy :).2012-07-19 21:00:226514013
Max Huijgen25,284The latest F1 circle: just in time for the Montreal race, don´t miss it!The circle has only 495 members as I hit the limit earlier today. Next round I will add everyone who I missed or who comments here with a request and split over two circles.Let´s share and grow this circle and reach out to all fans on G+ to connect!I will merge with the work of +Brian Titus and +Jens Graikowski like we did before when we all have sufficient room again to grow this in to all-in-one series of #F1  circles.2012-06-10 17:53:3949520518
Jens „Google Plus Yoda“ Graikowski4,830the SUPER F1 CIRCLE (first installment) ...here it finally is! ... the collective effort of hundreds of F1 buffs all over the world ... the SUPER F1 CIRCLE! ...this circle started some time ago with three guys roaming G+ on the search for #formula1 fans ... +Brian Titus +Max Huijgen and my humble self put everybody who posted #F1 posts or commented on them in a circle and this circle has been circulating (you see what i did there, don't you? ... circle? ... circulating? ... no? ... well, never mind!) G+ for weeks and months now ... now we went one step further ... in one of my last posts i asked all members of the circle to send me their's, since it was probable that they had some #foreveralone aficionados in their private F1 circle that weren't yet in ours ... and there were! ... our SUPER F1 CIRCLE has grown to impressive 593 members! ... since i can only share 500 in a circle, this is the first installment ...the next installment will follow in a second, but there might be a problem ... since google in its infinite wisdom decided to make every movement in your circles a circle addition i can't split the circle properly ... i tried to and because i had moved some of the F1 buffs around already, my circle page told me that i had exceeded my limit to add people to my circles ... i had only added about 20 but since i moved hundreds from one circle to another i was told off ... well, that is the subject for another post ...anyway, i'll share the second installment in a sec, but there might be some doubles ... that doesn't matter though if you just add the second circle to the first ... doubles will automatically ignored then ...if you still have your ow F1 circle, send it to me (share it with just me) ... i will add to the next update then ... like this we should be able to collect the majority of the F1 buffs in one all encompassing circle ... thx for your collaboration! ...please don't forget to share this post publicly! ... we want to reach every F1 fan out there and we can only do that with your help! ... and don't forget, we are going to start our formula 1 race hangout at around 6pm GMT! ... you better reserve yourself a spot ... read more here http://bit.ly/Lg58Xj ! ...greez,+Jens Graikowski ...************************************************************************permalink to this post: http://bit.ly/KJbun4 ... #jgformula1  if you'd like to be notified about these kinds of posts, please read http://bit.ly/JPJxor ... if, on the other hand you are already receiving these notifications and would rather not anymore, please let me know in a PM (no questions asked) ...2012-06-10 15:52:2850116412
Max Huijgen23,013The latest #F1 circle of true Formula one fansRemember we are in Barcelona now, hence European hours so we can all watch the race at the same time now. Please share it to see if we can collect more fans.Let´s turn G+ into a place to share our interests: an F1 communityhttps://plus.google.com/u/0/112352920206354603958/posts/fTL61jyECov2012-05-11 20:26:44407241632

Jens „Google Plus Yoda“ Graikowski3,652newest version of our #F1 circle ...updated on the saturday, the 14th of april 2012» honey, they're here!+Max Huijgen has finally shared his eagerly anticipated #formulaone circle ... just in time for the race weekend in china ... i added it to our already existing circle and we gained a whopping 96 new members! ... thx to his excellent work our circle is now 344 #formula1 buffs strong! ... that's impressive, though there must be more out there ... please share this circle publicly, so we can find them all! ... if you are reading this and are not yet included in the circle, but would like to be, give me a shout in the comments! ...» who are we?originally this circle was curated by +Brian Titus (with a bit of a helping hand by myself) to bring all the F1 fans at #googleplus together and discuss our favorite subject ... we have our own +page too, called +F1 Circle ... don't forget to add it! ... apart from discussing the news around the formula 1 circus we'd like to do more though ... i for example will invite the whole circle to a hangout at every #race (if i can't or won't watch a race, like bahrain, we'll find somebody else who starts the hangout) ... like this, we can watch the #grandprix together (it's always nicer in good company) ... if you have some other great ideas about activities, that could make our little circle more interesting, let me or +Brian Titus or +Max Huijgen know! ...and now, let's all have a great time together! ...greez,+Jens Graikowski ...****************************************************************************** #jgformula12012-04-14 18:59:363441007
Max Huijgen20,565Will Rob Smedley start driving the Ferrari himself? An F1 circle of fans!A few weeks ago I started collecting people who are real fans of F1. Now crowd sourcing has the disadvantage that there are always people who want to be in a circle no matter the subject. I have taken my time to go through comments and posts all over G+ and came up with the following hard core fans. Now I´m pretty sure there must be much more and I will gladly add you if you have a clue about the post titlle :)Now, there is already a +F1 Circle and +Jens Graikowski and +Brian Titus have been curating this. Last year +Kol Tregaskes and I made the same effort. The goal is of course to get to one circle to rule them all ;)It makes no sense at all to have fragmented circles so I checked mine against the existing ones and found 98 new names compared to the latest shard one, so that´s good news. Before I merge I want to be sure we have as many people who really love #F1 as possible and avoid taking on board too many people who just want to be in. If you already have the latest circle you can just add this one to it to win the 98 new ones. What I hope for however is that we will find even more F1 fans thanks to this post and that I can share an even larger one next time. So if you´re in it and feel others are forgotten please mention them. Oh, and if you don´t want to be notified just say so, and I make sure someone else can be on the selected list for notifications.2012-04-14 14:56:1417056622
Martijn van der Meulen2,841Looking for people that are active on Google+?People that both post great content, but also engage? Then this is the Circle you want to add. Yesterday I managed to get a group of great people together who love interacting with others - so if you post quality content you know that with this Circle you can broadcast it to an audience that's very active here.It has taken me about two hours to get this ready, so I hope people will appreciate it. And please re-share it if you think that your own followers will benefit from it as well.Just two small disclaimers:1) Being an "engager" doesn't mean that these people randomly click on any of the people that have them circled and start interacting. Like I said, it just means that if you post great content than this time you at least know that you're broadcasting it to people that are very active on Google+. (thanks +Annie Yim and +Meirav Berale for pointing this out).2) Most extensions for adding all people in a post are broken, so I had to add everyone by hand. Apologies if I've forgotten a few of you, such as +Missy Hope and +Arvid Bux. Make sure you add them! :)Enjoy!2012-04-13 13:10:34291481132

Jens „Google Plus Yoda“ Graikowski3,553newest version of our #F1 circle ...if you are a #formula1 buff, this might interest you ... a circle of birds-of-a-feather ... these are either people whom i've found all over G+ commenting and posting about the #formulaone , or peeps who specifically asked to be added to the circle ... being in this circle is fun! ... if you are interested in formula one you'll find fellow fans here ... there are always interesting, sometimes even heated, discussions going on ... we organise hangouts at #race weekends, to watch the #grandprix together ... if you'd like to be added, you can either add yourself and share the circle on, or just let me know in a comment at this, the original post, and i'll add you to the next up date (we do them regularly) ... also if you'd like to be taken out of the circle, please let know ...we are 230 strong now, but this can not be every F1 fan on G+, so please help us find the rest! ... add your own F1 followers, but don't share this circle only with your formula 1 peeps ... please share it publicly, so we can reach every living soul here on G+ (and of course all the ghosts too) ... #jgformula12012-04-05 16:40:4423017137
Lawrence Duffy411MotoCircle Maxed OutMotorcycle Circle for all to share. There is a weird rule on +Google+ that you can only share 500 people and pages from your circle so here they are. Sir John Hardy17,427There have been a few circles shared about lately. None, however, is as good as this one. Each person in this circle has been crash tested in a laboratory, simmered in a social incubator and boiled in the crucible of interaction. All have come up with a pH reading of 4 or higher.2012-03-11 14:36:3337538720
Martijn van der Meulen940A few days ago I shared my #Chromies circle, aka a circle full of other Chromebook owners. It consisted of 91 people at the time, but soon after sharing I got bombarded with messages from other Chromebook owners who wanted to be added to it.The list now consists of 150 Chromebook owners(!). I curate the list properly so every one in the list is relatively active on Google+. Feel free to add them if you own a Chromebook as well and if you want to hear updates from Chromebook owners. Feel free to share this circle amongst your friends if you think they are interested in it as well. The list also includes ChromeOS Community Manager +Melissa Daniels who is definitely worth following for all the latest and greatest when it comes to Chromebooks.Enjoy!2012-02-17 12:15:44150311

Googlers: I know you're handy with words but how about some simple math?
Solving 12 : 4 × 3 (or 12 ÷ 4 * 3) looks easy, but can you multiply that total with 1 + 2 x 3? Pick your answer below and let's see if G+ can solve the kind of 'math' we expect from current primary school students.

Vote for your answer or disagree with the pre-canned ones and provide your own in the comments

This is a new TV show coming to Channel 4 in the UK called "Humans", which is to be aired on June 4th.

The first time I watched the trailer I wondered what on earth it was I was watching. Was it an advertisement for a product? Was it a joke? Neither, it was a new TV show.

At first I was somewhat disturbed by it, but now I'm really intrigued to watch it. Why? Because this is a future I feel we are actually heading towards. I just hope our robotic helpers don't end up looking like humans as they do in the show. That would freak me out!

The show even has this strange website http://www.personasynthetics.com/

It's good to know that the original LG G Watch R will eventually get Wi-Fi support but I can't help but think that the only reason it isn't getting it straight away is to entice people new to the market to buy the newer LG Urbane watch instead of the now lower cost G Watch R.

It's all about business I'm afraid (imo)

My Sony Smartwatch 3 is so ready for Android Wear 5.1.1

This morning I couldn't find my watch, and I actually missed it. It felt like my left hand had been cut off (OK, it wasn't quite that bad).

In all seriousness, this was only the second day that I haven't worn it to work since buying it, and it was surprising how much I missed it. I couldn't say to you that the watch is useful in any shape or form, because it doesn't really do anything. But without it, I felt lost. Each time I stepped away form my desk, I felt the need to take my phone with me, where as normally I'd happily leave it on my desk knowing I'd get notifications via my wrist.

So the next step is being able to leave my phone anywhere (more than 10 meters away) knowing the watch is still synced via WiFi. That for me is the single reason I chose the Sony version over all other... more »

I can't wait for these to be available for public purchase. Would I buy one. Hell yes, but it wouldn't be for its looks.

For the record, mine would be kitted out with a pillow and a duvet. I assume sleeping at the wheel hasn't be banned in autonomous vehicles???

If you are tempted by the smartwatch market, but aren't quite sure if it is for you yet. Well this here is an absolute steal at this price. £131

A great device and not a bad price if you want to test the waters. But once you have it, I don't think you'll be replacing with any other model anytime soon. I still love mine, and I haven't got the latest 5.1.1 firmware update yet.

Certainly has a lot of +1s (over half a million), just not from anybody I know yet! It actually strikes me as the sort of company Google would go and buy.

France bans wifi at Nursery' and Primary Schools

This isn't the first time I've heard about this sort of thing. In fact I actually carried out an electrical installation for a product testing facility where they provide SAR ratings for devices. The procedure included strapping a device to a mannequins head and taken measurements from within. So even 15 years ago I knew radiation was being leaked in to our brains. It's no secret.

With more and more devices about, and more and more WiFi access points popping up everywhere, are we slowly poisoning ourselves and our children? And if we are, how can you escape it? WiFi is everywhere, Homes, schools, offices, hotels, trains, planes, retailers, restaurants, high streets, and even beaches. Just about anywhere and everywhere you go you could be putting yourself at risk.

The things that Google invest in never ceases to amaze me.

How I'd love to know what other things Google is coming up with behind closed doors. This is why I'm happy to use their services. Sure they make money out of knowing my every movement on the internet, and probably in real life too. But look what they do with it. Just fantastic.

A Wristband that Destroys Cancer Cells

Google has now secured a patent for a potentially cancer cell-destroying wrist-worn device. In combination with the magnetic nanoparticles in Google’s cancer-detecting pill, the device could generate its own magnetic field, allowing it to corral the particles, with targeted cells not far behind. The device will presumably offer a readout of just how cancer cell-saturated your blood is. Think of it like a wearable glucose monitor - only instead of sugar, it’s counting tumor cells.

Sauber Fans, this may be of great interest to you :)

+Sauber F1 Team has decided to create themselves a couple of +Google+ Collections. Head over to their profile now and check them out. Always at the forefront of social media :)

But what this post is really about is something much more exciting, and I'm not sure even Sauber realise this yet. I certainly didn't until just now, but... when you follow a collection, you can also choose to get notified when new content is added.

That's right, if you want instant breaking news from Sauber's "Racing News" collection, head to it now and turn notifications on. This way you can always stay up to date with lap times and other info from all the sessions as soon as it is shared by Sauber, never missing another post again. Just be careful if you are trying to avoid spoilers ever.

Let's hope more teams follow suit!

(Hopefully Sauber don't mind that I used one of their photos as the main image for my own Formula 1 collection)

Today is UK polling day, and tomorrow we will find out who will be running the country (possibly).

But I have this strong intuition that we are going to wake up to a massive surprise. Working in the construction industry I come across many people that find Nigel Farage appealing. In the past I would say these people couldn't care less about voting. But now they have this figure that they agree with in part. If the non voters (that's close to 40% of the country) are swayed to to get up and vote UKIP today, all because this is the first political party that strikes a nerve with them, we could all be waking up to one massive surprise.

Read a much better description of the new Collections feature from +Peter G McDermott below.

I’ve Been Collecting A Few Things…

With the introduction of the new Google+ Collections feature, you can now easily categorize your posts and choose not just who to follow, but what to follow. Let’s face it, just because we’re connected doesn’t mean we share all of the same interests, and that’s what makes Collections so great.

I’ve created collections of many of my recent posts and will continue to post to these various collections. If you’re into Technology, but don’t really care about Food and Drink, you don’t have to worry about seeing any more posts of my culinary adventures. To do so, simply visit my profile and unfollow that particular collection.

Maybe there’s just one thing that someone posts about that interests you, well now, thanks to Collections, you can focus on just those posts. (Hooray, no more cat posts! I hope…)

Allowing users to curate content based on interests should give Google+ an entirely new experience. Sure, it’s a little bit like Pinterest or Flipboard, but it’s not limited in the ways that those platforms are. Now you can share almost anything you’d like and keep it all organized. This new organizational tool will make it super easy to identify topical experts and keep up with the things that you love from the people you love.

I’m hoping this new feature will benefit the great digital curators out there and create an opportunity for people interested in very specific niches to create a wonderful selection of content to share with others also interested in those things. Imagine a digital Smithsonian for every topic you can imagine including blog posts, news articles, photos, videos and more. As I’ve said from the beginning, Google+ is all about discovering new and interesting things, and this new feature makes doing that so much easier.

There is so much rich and amazing content available on the web. Finally, as individuals, we have any easy way to catalog them by topic and share them with the world making them easy to find and discover by others. Sure, there are lots of other platforms that allow you to do this, but none that are so socially connected as this. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and start collecting!

If you’re wondering how to go about starting your Collections and what to include, I invite you to check out my Collections and see what I’ve started.

What will you collect?

So here it is; Collections for Google+ If you are already a Pinterest user, this is Google's own take, but built right here in to G+

You will start to see people posting and sharing posts within Collections (see the blue writing at the top of this post), and this is where you now have a new choice. If you like the topic of the Collection, why not follow it so you see more of it from that person. Or circle the person and you will follow all of there Collections. But this is where the magic is. If you have somebody circled, you can also unfollow individual Collections to remove the posts from your stream. So if you follow me for example, you could unfollow my Formula One collection so that you no longer see F1 posts from me.

Yes family this is for you, and I warn you now, I'll will probably start posting more tech and F1 stuff knowing I won't be spamming you... more »

Introducing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic

Our happiest Google+ users are those who connect with others around shared interests and passions. So we set out to give people a place to express the things they love. Today, we’re announcing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic.

Every collection is a focused set of posts on a particular topic, providing an easy way for you to organize all the things you’re into. Each collection can be shared publicly, privately, or with a custom set of people. Once you create your first collection, your profile will display a new tab where other people can find and follow your collections.

Posts in collections you follow will appear in your Home stream, with a link to easily jump right into the collection so you can get to similar content from that author. Collections give you a great way to find more of the stuff you love from the people you follow.

Collections is available on Android and the web, and iOS is coming later. For Android users, make sure to update your Google+ app to get access to Collections.

For inspiration on interesting topics, check out our Featured Collections page here: g.co/collections

Create your collections today and share what you love.

If you have questions then also be sure to check out our Help Center content http://goo.gl/zyIVMH; if you still can’t find an answer then please post your question in the Collections subcategory.

The future that I predict - Part 1 - Autonomous Cars

Now I'm an ordinary person with an ordinary job and I like to think I keep up with new technologies. With that in mind, I constantly wonder what the future has in store for our generation, and this is what I think will be one of the major changes in the developed world in the near future.

Autonomous Cars

We all know they are coming, but my prediction goes beyond just the technology and instead touches on how autonomous cars will change our outlook on car ownership altogether and the impact they will have on the world around us. Quite simply put, I believe the majority of people will no longer own their own car and instead will pay for a subscription based service. Fewer car parks will be needed.

And petrol stations will become autonomous charging depots. Now this might sound far fetched but let me break it down.

Car Ownership

At the moment we spend thousands of £'s to own and run a private car for it to then spend most of its life sat around waiting to be used. With autonomous cars on the horizon, I believe some very big ambitious players like +Google UK or +Virgin will purchase tens, possibly even hundreds of thousands of autonomous cars which will become part of a subscription based fleet.

We, the end users, will then pay a monthly subscription to have access to every single one of those cars as we require a lift. Much like +Uber, but without drivers and without paying as you go. There will be different tiers of subscription so the more you pay, the better quality vehicle you get and the more travel miles included each month. Those at the bottom of the pecking order get budget vehicles, whilst those at the top get luxurious limousines. It's all about how much you wish/need to pay each month, or can afford.

So how will it work. Imagine you need a lift to work in the morning. You whip out your phone and via an app request your lift for a certain date/time, even if that's the next available slot. Computer algorithms then select the closest and next available vehicle and send it to meet you at your pick up point. You enter the vehicle by entering a code provided in the app in to the vehicle security system so that nobody can hijack your ride, and it then takes you to your preset destination. Once dropped off, the car then goes to it's next pickup and the loop continues.

Fuel/Charging

What about fuel I hear you ask. Well I think it's obvious that autonomous vehicles will be electric, and like everything battery powered, they will require charging at some point. This is where petrol stations come in to play. As electric vehicles become more and more popular, petrol stations will become surplus to requirement. Instead they will become autonomous charging depots still owned by the big fuel companies. The fleet owners will be billed accordingly for their cars to charge up at these depots, keeping the fuel companies in business. As the autonomous vehicles become low in battery or are waiting for their next instructions, the car temporarily removes itself from service and will take itself to the nearest charging depot where it will then park over charging pads in the ground which will recharge the car wirelessly ready for its next set of jobs. Now nearly every petrol station has a flat canopy roof which is perfect for solar panels. Yes that's right, these autonomous vehicles will be charged up by the sun during the days making them environmentally friendly. Whilst this is happening, on site attendants will clean the vehicles inside and out so that they are always in pristine condition. Magic!

Car parks

Once this becomes the norm in 50 years time, what will happen to all those car parks outside our offices and at supermarkets/retail shops. Well they won't be needed anymore. There will be less cars on the road, and certainly less cars sitting around idle. Instead, when you look out your window you will see a few drop off points amongst a lovely green sanctuary of fields, lakes and nature trail walks. What could be better? And no longer will you have an idle car parked outside you house every night.

Conclusion

This is the future that I predict, and this is a future I'd be happy to live in. I believe traffic jams and traffic accidents will become a thing of the past. I believe the cost of this service will be far cheaper than the cost of private ownership as the car will be in constant use and the costs covered by many subscribers instead of one single private owner. Why have one car at your disposal when you can have thousands? I also believe whoever builds a business model around this first will become the next billionaire if they aren't already. +Richard Branson, you're an ambitious guy ;)

Thank you

If you got this far, thank you for reading to the very end. I hope you enjoyed it. Please comment and share if you did. Also look out for more installments in the near future of my next big prediction.___

A very interesting and in depth interview from the man behind the +Sauber F1 Team G+ profile (and the other social media platforms.)

A great read thanks Markus.

Interview with Markus Höpperger, Marketing & Digital Media Manager, +Sauber F1 Team – for Almanaque da Fórmula 1, questions by Alexandre Carvalho

Hi, Plussers! Many of you wondered who was behind our social media activities. We reveal this little "secret" in this interview. Alexandre actually approached us via Google+, and it was a pleasure doing this interview for his blog. We hope you find this interesting!

Who is in charge of Sauber F1 Team's social media platforms? What's your name and age?

My name is Markus Höpperger and I am the Sauber F1 Team’s Marketing & Digital Media Manager. I’m 44 years old, from Austria, and have lived in Switzerland since 1979. We started getting active in social media in 2011 and I have always been majorly involved. In fact, I was the team’s Social Media Manager for the last few years, introducing and taking care of Facebook, Google+, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Sportlobster and Vine.

I also tweet every now and then, especially when we have special content to share, like our infographics and videos. During race weekends, Twitter is mostly fed by two of my colleagues who attend all the races. Most race weekends mean home office for me as I usually only attend a handful of races per year myself.

How long have you worked for the Sauber F1 Team?

I started working for the Sauber F1 Team in August 2000; this year will be my 15th anniversary with the team. My first position was as the Merchandise Manager, but my responsibilities soon developed into account/relationship management with team partners.

Is this your first job with an F1 team or in the motorsport industry in general?

Yes and no… I didn’t work in the motorsport industry before I joined the team, but my responsibilities within the team changed quite a lot over time. From Merchandise Manager to Sponsoring Manager and now, Marketing & Digital Media Manager.

Always keep in mind that the team and its structure went through some huge changes especially after BMW bought the team in 2005. During the BMW era, I was the sole marketing contact at the factory in Hinwil for our colleagues in Munich, and for all global team partners. I oversaw the re-branding and introduced BMW’s corporate identity in Hinwil.

When Peter Sauber bought back the team from BMW at the end of 2009, we basically had to start from scratch (and with very limited funding).

Is social media communication your sole duty or do you have other responsibilities within the team?

We have just gone through a minor restructuring of our Marketing Department and, always remember, we’re a rather small team compared to the big players. The same goes for our Marketing Department. We were able to shift some of my previous responsibilities to some of my colleagues, like the account management for a few of the team partners, as well as the management of our show-car fleet. This allows me to focus even more on the digital and social media side of things.

I’m still responsible for the team wear management which I do in close cooperation with our suppliers like Wikland, Nabholz, On and OMP. Furthermore, I organise all the sponsor branding, be it on the race cars, the equipment or the team wear…

Another task I recently took over is the team’s website. There’s a lot of work to be done and we have many ideas.

How do the team’s chief executives perceive social media? Do they really care about social media, is it a strategic part of the business?

We perceive social media as the most important tool to connect with our fan base! Imagine a few years back… We employed a Fan Club Manager and spent a lot of money to produce and distribute fan club packages to a few thousand fans.

Today we can reach hundreds of thousands of fans via our social media platforms on a daily basis and at no cost. And the best part: we immediately get our fans’ feedback – their enthusiastic joy after a good race as well as their sometimes brutal criticism when something goes wrong.

As much as we, as a team, appreciate social media and as much as our senior management values social media as a means for our team to communicate with our fans, most members of our senior management are not really active on any of the platforms, at least not publicly.

When did the Sauber F1 Team start to use social media?

We started rather slowly and “carefully” in 2011. Just the must-haves at the time, a few tweets and posts on Facebook and some videos on our YouTube channel. At first, we didn’t even allow comments on Facebook. I am proud to say that we are now one of the most engaged Formula One teams on all social media channels! Which is probably a benchmark when it comes to fan engagement and branded content.

We added Google+ in April 2013 and started getting active on Instagram, Pinterest, Vine and Sportlobster in 2014. In fact, we were approached by a fan who had started the @sauberf1team profile on Instagram and asked us whether we’d like to take over his account and continue it as the official profile. Well, we did…

On which platform do you have the highest number of fans and the most interactions on a daily basis?

The first question is easy to answer: We currently (7th April 2015) have more than 480,000 followers on Facebook, almost 304,000 on Twitter, close to 80,000 on Google+, more than 34,000 on Instagram, some 33,000 on Sportlobster, nearly 32,000 on Pinterest and over 5,000 on Vine (vine.co is Twitter’s 6-second looping video platform). On YouTube, we hope to crack the 40,000 subscriber milestone soon and we’re closing in on 6 million views on our channel.

The second question is harder to answer… Facebook recently changed their algorithms, which means that Facebook pages’ organic reach was dramatically reduced. Reach obviously induces interaction which means that interactions on Facebook went down, too. We haven’t paid for reach yet on any of our social platforms and solely rely on organic growth…

It also depends on what people are saying. We usually don’t answer comments whose sole intention is to dis the team or our drivers. We’d rather make use of our time and efforts to reply to genuine questions and to connect with fans who want to be connected to our team. Luckily, we have many loyal fans who will tell “trolls” when they have had enough of their useless comments. Don’t get me wrong – we don’t delete negative comments, we respect the freedom of speech on social media. We simply don’t engage with such people.

Coming back to the question… We try to value every interaction with our team, be it by simply “liking” a comment or, whenever possible, by replying. From my personal experience people on Instagram are very engaged. Most of the “trolls” may be found on Facebook. Which is logical as it’s still the biggest of all social platforms. My personal favourite is Google+. While Facebook is a network based on contacts with family and friends, G+ is actually interest-based and allows people to connect with a community of shared interests. It’s also the most “demanding” of social platforms: G+ users expect brands to interact with them, whereas the general Facebook user is still rather surprised when a brand answers their comments or messages. As you may know, YouTube is owned by Google and closely connected to Google+, so the same goes for comments to our videos.

Engagement on Pinterest, Sportlobster and Vine is less intense, at least for now. We could do a lot more on Twitter but our limited resources simply have not allowed for a seamless Twitter strategy thus far. Up till now we mainly used Twitter as the short-message news service it is, in particular for timely updates from the racetrack. We are working on being able to engage on Twitter in a more intense way in the near future.

All F1 teams manage social media channels. Unfortunately, most of them don't focus on the conversation with their fans, even knowing it's something so essential in digital communication. This so particular detail seems to be very important for the Sauber F1 Team. Has it been this way since the beginning? Why?

As I said before, we started our social media campaigns very “carefully” in the beginning. I was personally extremely fascinated by these new means of communication when social media started to take off, and it didn’t take long for us to realise that it was an amazing opportunity to not only connect with our fans and grow our fan base from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands or even millions of engaged fans, but also to broaden the visibility for our team partners in ways never before possible.

Our partners’ brand exposure on TV very much depends on our team’s performance and success on the racetrack. Having a loyal fan base on social media we are able to expand our team partners’ exposure dramatically. Just to give one example: Despite the reduced reach of Facebook pages, we still reach millions of people with our posts over the course of a year, most of which include a picture of our racecar and, thus, our partners’ branding. Furthermore, most of our official posts and all of our infographics include a banner with the logos of our Principal and Premium Partners.

Now… Social media has its name for a reason: It’s meant to be social, sociable and bi-directional. That’s what social media is all about. We’ve always appreciated our fans but it took a lot more effort and resources to answer a fan’s letter by regular mail than it does to connect with fans through social media channels. Social media is like paradise for a sporting brand like ours. It allows us to engage with every single person who is interested in what we’re doing, on a global basis. I believe we are a brand who understands and appreciates that aspect of social media. We genuinely invite people to engage with us. I’d rather have 100 fewer followers (who only clicked “Like” or “Follow” or “+Add” and never engage with us) versus one truly committed and loyal fan who sticks with the team through good and bad times…

Our team, our sport would be nothing without the millions of fans who regularly watch the races, who suffer with their beloved teams or cry for joy together with their favourite drivers. The closer this connection with our fan base, the more loyal our fans, the better for us as a team and so too for our team partners. Every person who takes the time to engage with us on social media deserves our appreciation.

Which is the most challenging platform to update when you're at the office and when you're at the racetrack?

None of the platforms are necessarily more or less challenging to update. The biggest issue is actually to regularly produce compelling and interesting content and to find a suitable format for each individual platform. Each platform has a way of showing content and usually, this even differs between desktop and mobile versions. A picture optimised for desktop will be cropped on mobile, a video link may show the full video thumbnail on mobile but only a rather “unsexy” text on desktop…

The challenge of tweets is usually to fit our message into the character limit while still making it understandable and interesting. G+ users are very interested and open to reading longer text and the platform allows us to format the text (highlight parts as bold/italic text). We try to keep Facebook posts shorter and we try to post bi-lingual (English for our worldwide fans, German for our Swiss fans) as often as possible.

At the moment, square pictures work best for Facebook and G+ posts, rectangular ones for Twitter and a vertical format provides the highest impact on Pinterest. So one of the biggest challenges overall is to keep up to date with the constant changes of the various platforms. We have templates for all social media channels but it still takes quite some time to optimise each post for every single platform.

At the racetrack, my colleagues (and me, when I’m on site) are first of all responsible for taking care of the media and our team partners’ guests. It may be quite stressful to fit in a tweet every now and then while at the same time entertaining guests or making sure the drivers find some time for interviews. Keep in mind that every single tweet must be thought through as a spontaneous tweet may quickly lead to a political nightmare for the team’s management or even to a “shit-storm”…

For me personally, race weekends always come with a trade-off between posting and engaging with our fan community versus spending time with my family. My wife will tell you… I spend a lot of time – from early in the morning until late at night, weekdays and weekends, race or not – on my tablet or smartphone, constantly checking comments and feedback on all social media platforms. Or on my laptop, downloading, formatting, texting, uploading pictures and posts…

During a Grand Prix, how difficult is it to update Twitter or Facebook while at the same time keeping the focus on what's happening on the track?

We don’t see Facebook as a tool for down-to-the-second news. That’s what we have Twitter for. On Facebook and the other platforms we concentrate on one to two posts (e.g. pre- and post-session) and uploading pictures as soon as they are available.

At home, I usually follow the races on TV and in parallel on the F1 app. Which is, in fact, similar to being at the track where we also follow the race on the TV screens in the garage and look at the timing screen all the time. The only difference is being able to listen to the team radio, which I can’t do from home. It’s quite possible to miss something of importance while preparing the next tweet. Plus: by the time it takes to type the next tweet, the information contained may already be old news… Luckily, I don’t usually have to deal with these challenges and am able to fully enjoy the races – before getting busy on my laptop as soon as the race is finished.

Your drivers, Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson, manage their own social media channels. Do you give them some kind of orientation considering the fact that they are Sauber F1 Team employees and must be careful with the team's image in terms of PR, or are they free to use it in their own way?

Yes, of course. Besides some behavioural rules being part of our driver contracts, we also provide our drivers with guidelines regarding social media. We encourage them to be active. But we can’t force them to be someone they are not. First of all, they have to be good race drivers and quick on the track but if they are interested in being active on social media, even better. Our current drivers are more or less active on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Which is good. Although they use their channels mostly to put out information and not so much to engage with the audience. It is simply impossible for a driver to engage with fans on various social media platforms the way I do for the team. They don’t have the time for that.

Which is the biggest challenge in social media after the season ends, when there are no races to watch and the fans don’t focus on F1 100%?

That very much depends on the circumstances, e.g. if there are big sponsor or driver changes or not, how “political” things currently are, etc. Usually, the community is craving anything to do with F1 during the off season. So any information you put out there is usually well received. During the season many very interesting posts may get lost in the clutter.

We are lucky in that content basically lies at our feet. We just have to pick it up and use it… There is a lot of information during race weekends and posting becomes about sharing what we have. Also, we’re constantly developing the car; drivers visit our factory and so many technical aspects of racing that our fans may find interesting...

What would you like to do on social media to raise even more interaction with fans and that wasn't possible to do so far (considering technological aspects or not)?

I’d love to do Google+ hangouts. We just haven’t gotten there yet… It’s merely a problem of time and resources, but I’m sure it would be an awesome asset. And imagine what we could do if the teams and drivers were allowed to take short videos at the racetrack! This is currently a huge limitation and would open up endless possibilities.

Looking at the bigger picture, we’re in the process of reviewing our website and our newsletter. Those are bigger projects that will take some time, but I’m very excited to tackle them soon.

What was the biggest success of your digital communication so far?

Undoubtedly, our biggest success was our Cutaway F1 Car. Viewing numbers of the respective video(s) and shares of the infographics went through the roof! In general, we’re very successful with any insights that we provide our fans, especially the technical ones. Steering wheel infographics and similar content explaining the technology and complexity of our sport are highly appreciated.

And, despite our disappointing performance in 2014, we were able to outgrow the World Champion team on G+ - it’s currently our 80’000 followers versus their 24,000. That says something, especially on a platform as demanding and craving for engagement as Google+.

How do you describe the Sauber F1 Team’s approach to social media compared to how other F1 teams handle it?

I’d say that most teams pretty much do the same thing. We all have similar content to share and I think that many teams do a great job in content generation. What sets us apart is probably the engagement with our fans. We take our fans seriously, listen to what they say. And we interact with them; answer their questions and generally make them feel appreciated.

We genuinely value the “social” in social media.

Please comment! How are we doing on social media? Would you like more or less posts? What do you like or dislike in particular about our social media approach?

Just wanted to let the community here know also, that +David Coulthard is on G+. Might be worth a follow.

By chance (thanks to a +1 of somebody I follow) I just came across the +Google+ profile of +David Coulthard

Thats right, +David Coulthard is on G+ and apparently has been for a while. I've always been a bit of a fan of his and love what he is doing with the BBC right now. So glad he didn't move over to Sky Sports. Sadly though, his following count is miniscule here on G+ (less than 300 followers) so I thought I would let you all know of his presence here so that you can add him to your circles in the hope he will start to use the G+ platform even more. Lets all show him some welcoming arms.

I've also included a whole copy of my F1 circle which includes official profiles of Teams, Drivers and other brands closely associated with Formula 1. Feel free to add these to you own circles as well, and do let me know if I should be adding any more that I have missed.

Back in January 2014 I purchased this (trilogy) book. Finally this week, nearly 16 months later, I have completed it.

I absolutely enjoyed every page and highly recommend it. I believe it is classed as a thriller, but what it did for me is mix fiction with a possibly reality. Certain aspects of the story could certainty be contrived as what may actually happen in this world where some events take place to distract the world from others.

I would spoil the story anymore than that, in case you wish to read it for yourself.

The question is, what do I read next? If you have read this book and know if any others like it, please send me your suggestions. Right now I'm considering Lee Child - Killing Floor as my next book???

I now have the option to add the photo to a folder in Google Drive Copy 7

If I later decide to delete one copy of the photo from any of the instances above, does it also delete it from somewhere else, all of the above, or does it depend on which copy you delete?

Please help me understand this chaos, my head is spinning. And don't even suggest i share it more times in different posts or hangout messages___

Some people buy gold because it appreciates in value. Some people buy Rolex watches because they appreciate in value...And some people will buy a Gold Apple Smartwatch because they have way to much money.

One thing I'm sure of, this version will only loose you money because it'll loose functionality within years. The gold won't be worth anywhere near the original price tag of £8000 that Apple has slapped on its top end version of the watch. And most people won't think much of you for touting one either.

So if you have £8000 to spend, please please buy a real time piece in the name of a Rolex or Hublot to name a few. Support the real art of watch making, and not yet another printed circuit board. And if you still want an Apple watch, buy the other version that does the exact same thing for a 5th of the cost.

That's all.

So here is something I just found out, thanks to +Sauber F1 Team

On +Google+, when you share a photo you can allow your viewers to download a full resolution copy of the photo to keep for themselves. Now I knew this was a feature, but what I didn't realise is that +Sauber F1 Team (and maybe others) allow their followers to download all the photos they share intentionally.

Basically, if you like any of those amazing photos of that gorgeous blue and yellow car, feel free to help yourself and download a copy (for personal use only I'd assume).

Thanks +Sauber F1 Team!

I hate Bluetooth. It is the worst technology that man has ever invented. It is so unreliable no matter what equipment you are using.

I can't wait for the day a hands free kit in a vehicle works more than 50% of the time. Its about time somebody invented NFC technology for hands free systems where you can put your phone in a holder and it connects to the hands free system without the need for wires or Bluetooth whilst charging at the same time.

If +Android Auto is going to rely on Bluetooth I think its going to be a royal pain in the arse with constant dropping of connectivity.

What's your experience with Bluetooth. Is it just me that hates it?

Oh America (followed by other parts of the world), you are on such a slippery slope.

Yesteryear you decided to mass medicate the population by adding fluoride to public water supplies because some people don't brush their teeth regularly.

Today you wish to mass vaccinate the population because a few people got measles, ebola, or some other horrible illness.

And tomorrow who knows what chemicals your governments will decide they wish to put inside every one of you because of a few minorities. This could be in your water, your food or by injection.

Maybe it'll be to save smokers from lung cancer.

Maybe it'll be to save alcoholics from liver disease

Maybe it'll be the flu vaccine that the UK just decided was only effective in 3% of people, and quite possibly hospitalised more people than it saved.

Or maybe it'll all be one big experiment that goes catastrophically wrong.

Either way, it won't be your choice so I hope everyone enjoys the ride set out by a few individuals.

Me, I'll be getting off on the next stop with quite a few others, hoping good old hygiene and healthy living protects us. And where it doesn't, then I will rely on good old medicine which I choose (including vaccines once researched and decided necessary).

All I ask is that everybody is respectful to others, and not share your germs. And if that means wearing a mask (I applaud you China), or locking yourself away for a few days, so be it.

Here's my problem with Google, Android, and in particular, Nexus devices.

I think anybody that knows a little something about me will know by now that I'm a fan of all those things mentioned above. But I still have an issue with them.

Back on the 25th June 2014 Google told the world about android L and the new material design. How excited was I along with many others, especially as I already owned two Nexus devices.

But then we had the long wait for the official Android Lollipop release which got announced back on the 15th October 2014. You would think that would mean the wait was over and soon after we would get our upgrades. Well guess what, it has taken until today for my final device to get Android Lollipop; a 2013 nexus 7 with 4G

So for a fan with a nexus device to have to wait over 7 months to get upgraded to something that was teased all that time ago, it is an absolute killer. And quite frankly I hate it. I hate the way the technology industry announces products that aren't yet available, or even have a planned release date. The next time I hear about a new product, I want it available within a week if not sooner!

Isn't that what the Nexus range was meant to be? Cutting edge, with fast updates. Com'on, 7 months, seriously???

So guess what, in 4 and a bit months time, I'll probably be learning about what I'll have in 2016.___

For those of you that like all this home automation stuff, here is another toy to add to your inventory (although it has nothing to do with home automation).

This Power Ethernet 2  gang socket (well 1 gang really), can replace a standard 2 gang socket, and enable you to run a network over your existing power cables. It uses the Powerline technology so it is compatible with other manufacturers products. The advantage with this is its appearance because it isn't a plug in module, but fits flush like a standard socket. The downside, you lose a socket outlet.

All you need to do is plug an ethernet cable from your hub, and then plug any ethernet enabled device in to another powerline device, ie your smart TV, and presto you have a hard wired network throughout your house without having installing any fixed wiring. Bingo.

Why would you want a HTPC when you can have one of these paired with a Chromecast device. Stream your locally stored content from the hard drive direct to the Chromecast via WiFi. That's sounds perfect to me. If only had some content to put on the thing, but I know many will.

This here is the single most reason why I am yet to invest in a +Nest thermostat. If I purchased the device complete with installation at £249, it would need to reduce my energy consumption by 68% to pay itself off in the first year. But that's a unrealistic expectation I know. As you can see from the photo, my gas usage is already pretty low and under control at £367 per year, way less than the UK average.

A 10% saving is what I would really expect. But even at that figure, it would take 6 years 10 months to make my money back. Now this doesn't take in to account any electricity used by the device, although probably very low.

Now let's be really honest here. Is anybody expecting their nest thermostat to still be working like new in 7 years time? Some how I think this is going to be just a very expensive toy.

So sorry, but I'm out.

This is a very interesting post regarding simple math. Put yourself to the test and vote for your correct answer on the original post. Thanks to +Max Huijgen for yet another post that gets the brain thinking.

What I found to be most interesting from this is that the Calculator App on Android Lollipop actually follows the basic laws of mathematics. I put it to the test with the simple sum of 1+5x5= ? Now dependant on your own mathematical knowledge the answer is either 30 or 26.

A little hint. so long as you don't press = until the end, the Calculator App will get it right :) Impressive, but also highlights the need to make sure you enter your sums correctly when using the App.

Now that I have lollipop installed on my Sony Smartwatch 3, I have disabled the tilt to wake screen feature. This makes me a very happy man because with the transflective display, it just makes complete sense.

The only thing that remains is for Google to remove the long press to change the watch face feature. Now that you can change the watch face from the settings menu on the watch, and from within the android wear app on your phone, the long press feature is unnecessary. In fact, having the feature enabled is just a pain in the @#£% because every time I cross my bare arms, the watch thinks I'm trying to change its face.
