Georges Pauly14,521Thomas HawkShared publicly  -  30 Aug 2013 2500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 2 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Yesterday I shared last name A-Da.  This one , part 2 of 5, today, represents Da-Ho.  I'll share the remaining three next week.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 3, 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpn*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of domain errors.  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-01 19:56:06482204

Alister Macintyre7,782Here is my circle of Gamers on G+.  See comments which I will be adding to this post.  I have many interests, but not all (yet) overlap with my G+ usage.  Game Simulations, is one of those interests, not yet merged into my G+ usage.2012-07-02 04:13:1445703
Alister Macintyre7,220My copy, of this circle of people interested in our Economy and how come it is in a mess, is over 600 people, but I can only share 500.  Some day, I will split the people here into smaller circles of secondary interests, or maybe installments.2012-06-15 03:15:52501314
Thomas Hawk2,473,6682,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 2 of 4 (Ev-La)Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev) here:  http://goo.gl/Z333gThis is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the second circle and includes photographers with the last name's Ev-La. A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably block you too.  I want to surround myself with positive uplifting people. 5.  I like people who directly post their work here on 2012-06-05 16:20:03500152107307

Robert Scoble1,236,665500 Hand Picked Photographers. Unfortunately only 500 people can be shared (I have 617 in this circle). I also am near my maximum of 5,000 circled (Google keeps me from circling more) so it's tough to add more, but I'm always looking to see more great photography, so if you aren't in this circle, leave your URL below so we can all check you out.By the way, I need to go through all my circles and look for inactive people again. It's been a while since I did that. If I were you I'd throw these 500 into a temporary circle, watch it for a while and move the ones you like into a circle of your own.Thank you to those of you who bring beauty into our lives. Everytime I need some inspiration I look to this circle.2012-04-22 18:03:4850014653148
Alik Griffin5,462PhotographersSo I think I've finally got a pretty solid circle of photographers ready to share. I've been refining this for the last month, adding photographers who have a good eye and aesthetic that I think are good. I like photography that takes you places and allows you to see people and things from all parts of the world from perspectives you've never seen before. I think many of the photographers in this circle do that very well. These are all very active G+ users and should provide your stream with some really nice content. If you are new to G+ you can start growing your network and enhancing your stream with with some of googles greatest. Please share.#photography #photographers #sharedcircles #artists2012-04-13 00:13:54485383034

Thomas Hawk846,3871,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (A-G, Part 1 of 3)1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (A-G, Part 1 of 3) http://goo.gl/WGdFw1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (G-O, Part 2 of 3) http://goo.gl/1yiS61,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (P-Z, Part 3 of 3) http://goo.gl/6nLZEI've shared my photographers circle on Google+ two times now. Once when it got to 500 and then again when it got to 1,000. Today my circle hit 1,500 so I'm sharing them again.I have to break them up into 500 person circles because this is the limit on Google+. Also Google limits the number of people you can add to circles per day so I'm going to publish my kick ass photographers circle over 3 days. Today I'm publishing A-G. Tomorrow I'll publish G-O. Friday I'll publish P-Z. By last name.In addition to the kick ass photographers in these circles I've also added three other accounts. Our new photography hangout show which will be on live tonight at 8PM PST +Photo Talk Plus as well as our show's sponsors +Drobo and +SmugMug as a way of saying thanks to them.A few notes about these circles. not to be long-winded, but…Every time I've shared my circles I've gotten haters from it. People who are upset that they are not in them. I absolutely detest that. It makes me not even want to share them because of that. These circles are not meant to be the definitive list of what photographers you should be following on Google+. These circles are simply who I have chosen to follow for photography on Google+ for my own personal consumption. I want to share them because I think YOU may also benefit from having these rich, talented, kick ass photographers in your streams. This is the circle that I browse every single day looking for great stuff to +1 and comment on Google+ and as such it reflects my own personal biases. For example. I hate looking at watermarks. This is a personal preference thing. If you use them, more power to you. It's absolutely your right. But as a consumer of photography I find them ugly and distracting and so I tend not to follow people who use them. This is not a big deal. This is not a personal attack against you if you watermark. This isn't even a universal rule of mine. I do have a few friends who use them that I still follow. But by and large, what you get with my circles is a watermark/signature free circle. I also prefer people who are active on Google+ both in terms of posting and in terms of contributing to the community. If the last photo you posted was in November, I probably won't have you in this list.If you were in my photographers circle before but removed, it could be for a lot of these sorts of reasons. Watermarks/sigs, not posting enough, posting too much non photography stuff that I'm not interested in, or all kinds of other things. Who knows. But it's most definitely not personal. Thomas Hawk277,019So the last few days I've been redoing my circles with the goal of resharing my Kick Ass Photographers Circle when it hit 1,000 photographers. Today it hit 1,000 for the first time and so I thought I'd share them. Because a circle can only have 500 people in it, I've broken this circle up into 2 circles by last name, A-K http://goo.gl/7HVMN and L-Z http://goo.gl/EO0O2.The people in these circles are some of the highest quality photographers on G+ today. Many of them are also my personal friends and people that I've known in some cases for years. Some of them are people that I don't know at all, but I just really admire their work. Anytime one attempts to share a list like this, there is inevitably a bit of negative backlash. It would be impossible to put every great photographer on Google+ on this list. Please keep in mind that if we are friends and I missed you on this list, it is not personal. Staying on top of tons of contacts isn't easy and I'm only human. If you were on this list before and are not now, also please do not take offense. I spent a great deal of time scrubbing this list this time around and was much more strict with the criteria for inclusion. I basically was looking for high quality active G+ photographers who post mostly their own work, who post without watermarks or signatures, and who interact in the community. Not everyone in this list meets this criteria, but 98% of you do.Also, if you're not on this list it may be that I simply don't know you. We haven't met in real life. We haven't interacted online. You may be an amazing photographer but our paths just have not had a good chance to cross in a meaningful way yet. Here's to meeting many more of you kick ass photographers in the future. This is the list that I browse most often on G+. It's where I go to find my daily dose of great photography. I'm sharing it because I think that you too might like some of the photography that is being published by these photographers. Thank you to every photographer not just on this list, but on G+ as a whole for making our daily lives a little more interesting and beautiful with the great images that you generously share.Thomas Hawk shared a circle with you.2011-10-26 20:13:44500187146165

Look, I'm as happy as anyone else that Apple Pay is here. But when being compared to Google Wallet in security, I see two things that are constantly repeated in comments that I'd like to address.

1. Google Wallet store your actual card information on your device

No, your card information is not stored on the device. It goes into the servers. Which is as equally secure as putting your card information into iTunes. The only thing that is shown on your device is the last four digits.

2. Google Wallet transmits your card information when you tap

Again, completely false. What is sent over is a token, exactly like Apple Pay. All it does is authorize payment and Google's servers pick a virtual MasterCard number to use at the server end to charge. The virtual card that is used is changed regularly and completely random. Even if someone managed to get that... more »

Now with these out of the way, can we all just get along and pay happily with NFC? ___

I saw someone doing this in Sisters recently- a minivan covered completely in local ads.

Huge vinyl logos and special offers covered the back and sides of the car. It even had a triangular sign with three more companies on its top. I think overall the car was advertising for about 20 companies. I didn't think it was very effective. This is mainly because some of the companies were in competition and others had tiny logos dwarfed by huge descriptions and photos. The space was so crowded I didn't know what to look at. I wouldn't mind a logo or two, perhaps a small slogan, but the extreme of this idea is a headache for everyone watching.

That said, many companies do this on a smaller scale. One that I frequent offers a 15% discount for using their plate frame. Another I know has magnetic promotional material that can be applied to cars. I've always thought it was rather... more »

That said, many companies do this on a smaller scale. One that I frequent offers a 15% discount for using their plate frame. Another I know has magnetic promotional material that can be applied to cars. I've always thought it was rather silly when any company tried to sell its promotional material. Bumper stickers that promote a company or product should usually be free at the very least.

I have, however, often fantasized about having an electronic display on my car. Not only to customize my own bumper sticker, but to communicate with others on the road.___

I find +Google Maps's location history feature quite useful and fun to play with, but it's annoying how many glitchy data points it keeps which are obviously incorrect.
Here's what I mean: there may be dozens of samples in one particular location within a small time window having positional error less than 100 feet. It may also record several points in that same time frame, located miles away from the others with an enormous error margin of error. Obviously, I do not teleport myself  every time I turn on GPS.

The simple ability to hide or delete all points with high margin of error would be a big improvement to usability and aesthetics of the map.
