Robert Scoble6,651,600@104987932455782713675 and I are talking about how the filters work on Facebook and why they aren't as nice to photographers as Google+ is.  Which got me a ton of questions about my feed, and what I'm seeing/learning about how the filters work and how to "game" them to get things through to more people's feeds on Facebook. PBS MediaShift581,070It’s a scary but exciting world for newspaper owners right now, especially if you’re in a selling mood. Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, bought the Washington Post last week (while our podcast was on vacation — great timing!), and Red Sox owner John Henry bought the Boston Globe before that. As newspapers continue to struggle to raise advertising or subscription revenue, will the journalism industry be aided or hindered when it’s owned by billionaires? Special guests Nick Wingfield from the New York Times and Jack Shafer from Reuters join this week’s episode of the Mediatwits. MediaShift’s +Mark Glaser hosts, along with Mónica Guzmán from the Seattle Times and GeekWire, Ana Marie Cox from the Guardian and Andrew Lih from American University.Mediatwits #90: When Billionaires Buy Newspapers2013-08-16 19:30:0017

They are all early adopters of Google Glass as well as social media and journalism experts, and will talk about their experiences with the device and what they see as its strengths and weaknesses for the future of journalism. Robert Best2,685Google+ Relevance CircleWhat people of "relevance" do we have in common? Care to share? This big shared circle contains my most "relevant" circles according to G+. It also only contains people/profiles who post publicly (Either occasionally or prolifically).Do you recognize others in the list? (I think the probability is high)As far as I know, the visual beside the "Add people" button below shows you the 8 people from this circle who are most "relevant" to you. Also, if you click that add people button, the list inside is ordered by "relevance".Some people in this circle I know very well... others I haven't met at all (Besides interfacing with what they share publicly on G+) I'm curious, what circles do we share of high relevance? Give a few people shout outs! Let's have a random chat. You were likely notified of this post... I normally don't share to any of my specific circles, so as to avoid sending out unwanted notifications... But since I have you and your attention here... HELLO! Have we talked before? Why do you think I have you circled? What's of relevance for you? (Besides people on G+) If we do know each other... Have we been in touch lately? A former friend blocked me: what I learned about myself

First, some of you might know who I'm talking about. Please don't post his name or other identifying information here unless he uncloaks here. I don't want this to be about him. Even though he's been writing about me on his blog (which I learned because lots of people read both of us).

Damn, that hurt. This is a guy I know well, I won't go into it more than that. But I looked at why it hurt for the past few days and thought I would share what I learned about myself.

My son, +Patrick Scoble, told me "you both are difficult," while trying to get us both to calm down. So, this is a learning opportunity.

This guy has his reasons for blocking me, in looking at my behavior, I don't agree with him, but that doesn't really matter in the end analysis. Now that thefr... more »

The new BMW i8 is stunning. This $127,000 supercar came to dinner last night thanks to Anton Wahlman, who is an auto analyst for http://www.thestreet.com

It sure drew a crowd! How many company founders can you spot? Last night we had people who started Activision, Eightly, Macromedia, Crowded Rocket, and a few other companies there.

What a car. Way out of my budget, but if I had the money this is a hell of a way to spend it.

Exclusive first look at a very interesting new video camera technology. OUR STUDIO IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS AGAIN! Thanks Rocky Barbanica!

This new camera, from Altia Systems, joins three cameras into one package for a "super wide" mode. Their first product is aimed at business conferencing rooms, but don't miss where this really is going to be important: on drones and for virtual reality.

See, I'm carrying around a 360-degree camera not for today, but next year when virtual reality headsets become far more commonplace. This camera technology will bring us video for the Oculus Rift.

Why? GoPro cameras simply aren't wide enough for those new uses. This $999 camera (which is cheap for what it does) brings us into the future where we'll use an Oculus Rift headset (or Hololens, or Valve VR, or Samsung's Gear VR, or Meta).

The phone call in the middle of the party.

It was Friday morning. We were in the middle of entertaining guests from around the world. Just about to pick up Matt Mullenweg and Ayelet Noff, both VIP guests of mine. Ayelet flew from Israel and Matt took time to fly back from Egypt just to support me. They were hardly the only ones who put extra effort in being there for me.

I reprinted this from Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/RobertScoble/posts/10153013564394655

But then the phone rang.

"Hello."

"Hi, this is xxxxx from xxxxxxx (my doctor) and we have your test results." (I have a sore on my nose that hasn't gone away and had it looked at).

"Awesome."

"Your biopsy came back and it showed you have skin cancer."

The good news: it is a slow spreading type and should be easy to cut out and solve.

But tonight, while editing this video with Tyson Gravity -- he and I stayed up all night editing -- I reflected on the fact that I now am a cancer victim.

Cancer. I'm now in the club that Drew Olanoff has been a member of for a while. He's a hero to me, and is continuing to live life hard even in the face of this disease.

Anyway, it reminded me of why Saturday's celebration was so special. IT MEANT SOMETHING. We all only have a few days together in this lifetime and we might as well work hard to have fun together.

Other than Maryam Ghaemmaghami Scoble, no one knew about this phone call during my party.

Why?

No way was I going to keep a phone call from having fun with all of you.

It's 6:15 a.m. Monday morning when I write these words (I finished it at about 9:30 a.m.). I've been up all night with my friends Damien D Hustle Bryant and Tyson who came all the way from the East Coast in a van to both teach me how to live and capture and produce this video.

This video means something. It is special to me. Extremely special.

Why?

Because the love of all of you around the world who wished me well is reflected in the joy in this video. But more than that. All of my friends came on their own time and dime.

I am absolutely humbled by how many people came from around the world to see me. As Telstra exec Monty Hamilton told me "I asked you to come to Australia, how would it be fair to not come to see you?"

Many people worked to make this day special. Family style special. See, some things you do "pro style" because some brand is paying, or the audience is paying. But this was done "family style" with just a lot of love and some of my own money and not much at that since everyone shared in some of the expenses. Because there wasn't any business interests on this party, it turned very special, which you will see if you watch this video.

Some other people who made the past three weeks in Vegas and then in Napa very special weeks in my life.

First, my fellow Rackspace employees, customers, and shareholders, who continue asking me to head into the world to find what's new and be helpful to people. Top amongst them my boss Robert D. La Gesse. Then my producer Rocky Barbanica. But most of all my friend and inspiration, Graham Weston. He often tells me of the days when Rackspace was a startup, but it is the Racker culture that leads me to entertain people.

Now onto the people who I can never repay.

Angelica Mabray is at the top of that list. She's the CEO of Sullivan Vineyards. Which hosted 250 people Saturday afternoon in stunning glory. The food was exquisite and I don't say that lightly. My guests will back that up. And of course the wine was even better. I will never be able to repay the gift that she gave to me. It is humbling and I will remember her every day of my life for the gift she and her husband Paul Mabray gave me.

But over the last two weeks only one guy took my life to a whole new level: Damien D Hustle Bryant. He, and his crew: Tyson Gravity, Hakim Hopkins (who captured a lot of the video here), Lori Hamilton (also a cancer survivor), Oscar Ortiz just made my life so much better. They are lifelong friends and, as I told Tyson tonight "life can steal everything from me, but it can't strip these memories from me."

They are cool cats that started from the bottom. Hustling. Selling clothes on the street. Helping people build their dreams. They run a bookstore, Black and Nobel, which sells books in Philadelphia that represent local entrepreneurs and storytellers. It also sends books to prisons. It's a cause I love because there aren't many ways to bring yourself up than educating yourself.

I have always wanted friends like this all my life. People around you that you would die for. My producer Rocky Barbanica. Mandy McClenahan Grignon and Andy Grignon. They both are extraordinary people and every day I pinch myself because they are in my life, Jeff Stevens, who helped us in many ways both in business and in life, and shares my passion for wine and life. My wife Maryam Ghaemmaghami Scoble who sacrifices every day so that I can follow my life's compulsion to see the future. Alex Fielding, who always makes me laugh, not to mention he always arrives with a huge bottle of something and a bunch of Drumstick ice cream boxes. Who doesn't love a friend like that? John Poore and his wife Erin Hussey Poore. Special people who I'll always do anything to help . Philip Nelson (who you see playing here, what a cool dude. We just sang in the lobby until 3 a.m. Sunday morning with 20 people around us in a circle. It is among my favorite memories. Stunning people). Sam Levin. What can I say? He is always generous with his spirit, his wine, and his love of gadgets.

Tanya Denise Halepota. She was the one who led to my discovery of Sarah Francis who just humbles me with her bravery. If you haven't seen the video of her sharing what it was like to lose $800,000 worth of her very special wine in the Napa earthquake, you really should. She's a very special entrepreneur who does what she does not to make a whole lot of money, but to make wine that changes lives. It changed mine and Saturday night it changed a lot of my friend's lives too. She, and her wine, touches my soul. Sarah, you are welcome in my home at any time for any reason.

Ayelet Noff and Motti Peer for helping me convince Yo to fund the CES Suite. Brad Rosen, of Drync app that helps you find and buy wine right from your mobile phone. He, and Aimee Cronin, helped my wife serve hundreds of people every night. I can't repay that debt either.

Musicians.
Roem A Baur. Roem beat 100,000 other musicians to get on the Voice and he has grown so much.
Teresa Valdez Klein (AKA Tae Phoenix). Wow.
Anna Post. New talent. Stunning talent.
Pete Stringfellow. Country music star.
Philip Nelson. NewTek TriCaster™ main man. (Newtek makes the video system we use in our studio).
Clint Jackson. Guitarist in One Republic. Find him at https://twitter.com/clintistouring
Jeremiah Owyang, who played piano during the birthday song.

They donated their time and paid their own expenses to get here. I'm so fortunate to count these people as friends. Musicians are special people who create joy. That's a gift and these people all have that gift.

Thank you also to
NewTek, who provided a Tricaster in our Las Vegas suite.
Drobo for providing our storage for editing. Keeps my stuff safe even if a drive fails.

Perkins Coie for providing champagne for our guests in Las Vegas.

Vibrant Eye Clothing for providing my shirt. http://vibranteyeclothing.com/

Kara Keenan Goldin for sending us a bunch of Hint Water to serve at our afterparties.

I know I'm forgetting so many who made my party so special. Every single person in the building is a friend of mine. Or even worse, family. It was so nice to see folks like Michael Arrington, Bebo White (who built the first US-based Website), Fred Davis (who started WIRED),  Dave McClure, and Marc Canter, who went way beyond the call of duty to make my birthday extra special. He's working on a startup that's looking interesting.

Mary Hodder and Ed Falk made one night extra special by making ice cream with liquid nitrogen. That was so great.

Scott Jordan for giving me constant inspiration in how to live life.

Rich Reader for arranging an awesome visit to the Tedeschi Family Winery. Great wine and a great family that's been growing grapes in Napa since before Prohibition.

I know I'm forgetting so many but I haven't had any sleep yet and it's almost 10 a.m.

In the end, I told Tyson that the cancer doesn't matter.

What matters is in this video. What is in it? Love. Pure love. I am watching it for the 10th time and each time is makes me emotional.

Thank you so much and make sure you watch to the end, some incredible performances there.

I can't say thank you enough. I've been given a huge gift that I will try to pay forward.

A ton of videos are coming from CES and other places, but first gotta get some sleep.

I just can't believe what my friends did for me this weekend.

Extra special thanks to my family. Bill Scoble, Sharon Bosley, Alex Scoble, Cassie Scoble, Atime Tomove, Shadi Hayden, Shadi Ghaffarian, Cassie Leigh, Aram Ghaemmaghami, Fariba Rahmatpour, Patrick Scoble and others who traveled distances to celebrate with me.

Oh, and to my son, Patrick, I'm so proud of you (he turned 21 this week too).

Much more over on my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/RobertScoble___

SpaceTag is one of those apps that intrigues me. Very close to genius but is one of those things that requires lots of people using it to really be fun. I also think the UI needs more affordances to figure out what it does, which will limit the number of people who get into it.

Why? Because it lets you put tags down around where you are and share lots of things with other people based on where you are.

This company, when I was in Israel earlier this year, showed me a bunch of indoor mapping tech that's pretty cool.
Try it at http://spacetag.me/

Exclusive sneak peek:

This is the most interesting new thing/company I've seen this year. Wattcost tracks when different electrical appliances are turned on or off (it can tell what brand of refrigerator you have, for instance, just by the electrical signal it shows on your power line/meter). Reduce your carbon footprint.

Will be coming to United States in mid 2015 for $149.

https://www.wattcost.com/

Why is this important? Google bought Nest for $3.x billion. This would generate even more data about what you do in your house than that. It knows, for instance, when you turn on and off lights, or open your refrigerator door, all by watching your power line.

What a car. Way out of my budget, but if I had the money this is a hell of a way to spend it.

Shel Israel and I were asked to speak to two audiences at Samsung today of its top engineers and executives about our book and findings "Age of Context." Our slides from our presentation are here: http://www.slideshare.net/Scobleizer/age-of-context-september-2014

So, what did I learn?

1. Everyone we met asked us very intelligent and deep questions, some of which I struggled to answer. That tells me they are an inquisitive, smart, culture, which matches the products they've shipped to date.

2. They are proud of their culture of "get it done." They are very hard working and are proud of that culture. Our guide said he had to go back to work on Friday afternoon. This culture felt a lot harder working than some of the other... more »

This culture felt a lot harder working than some of the other big companies I've been involved in, which explains how every year at CES they come out with stunning new screens and devices.

3. They know they have many problems, particularly in PR relations with the rest of the world that they are working on. Language and culture is a barrier that I only observed from the outside before today. Many of their workers and execs don't speak English as their first language, which makes it tough for both of us to understand and share with each other. I think that explains a lot about how Samsung is perceived in America and other Western countries.

They are working on innovation and getting ahead of the rest of the market. They know that the only way to gain more customers is to bring out new products that thrill users. We urged the execs to be far more visible on Facebook and Twitter, but I sense that many struggle with English and see writing in public as a risk.

4. They are working on many sensor programs to do things that will study our health in deep detail (and do other things, as well, we had lengthy discussions about health and fashion). I don't know what they want discussed in public about future product plans, so I'll leave that out, but I'm quite amazed at some of the things they are working on. I bet that Apple and Google are working on many of the same things. The future is going to have an endless supply of innovations in wearable devices here.

5. They are just as freaked about by our talk as all other audiences are. In other words, they are just as scared of privacy intrusions as the rest of the world is (even while admitting that products of the future will need to collect and use a TON of data to serve us). I feel the challenge of product developers at all these companies who are struggling to figure out how to provide new utility without consequences from the collection of a LOT of very personal data.

By the way, I never was derided for pulling out my iPhone and shooting photos. Several execs showed me their iPhones (all were carrying various Samsung models too). This tells me they are very focused on Apple as a formidable competitor. I would expect that if I got the same tour at Apple that execs there would carry around Samsung phones to know what the competitor's strengths and weaknesses are. (My friend Andy Grignon, who worked for Steve Jobs, told me that is indeed the case, at Apple they all carried various competitor's phones to understand what made them good and bad).

In its museum you see a TON of innovations from elsewhere in the world (I loved seeing the old American TVs and radios, washing machines, and other devices that I grew up with). I really like this culture of understanding that much of the world's technological innovation and great product design came from other places. I can just see being a young engineer and walking around the museum and understanding the world's tech history and just how hard it is to build products that break through and thrill users.

It is also interesting how visiting a company's headquarters changes your perspective. I can see that consumers will continue to win as this great company continues to battle not just other giants in Asia, like LG and Sony, but Apple and other companies.

As I unpack my new iPhone 6 Plus on Saturday after I get home, I'll be thinking about the pressure that Samsung puts on Apple to continuously improve too. As I walk around Korea and I see so many large Samsung phones being used in the street I know that Apple is playing catchup in many ways to Samsung.

This competition makes us all winners, no matter which side of the fence we are on.

Thank you to the hundreds of Samsung employees who we met today. You have inspired me in a big way.___

Now that the friendship is over it's a learning opportunity.

1. A block is a nuclear weapon to use on a real-life friend. Doing that made it impossible to use things like Facebook messages or Google Hangouts to back channel and work through a relationship in strain. I can just hear you saying "well call him." Sorry, once a nuke is thrown I'm not calling, the relationship has been damaged beyond repair at that point. A block is akin to saying "I never want to hear from you again." Sorry, I'm not calling someone who signals that.

2. It hurt because it was akin to saying "I see absolutely no value in you." I believe I have value, therefor it causes our brain to go into a bad loop: "He says I have no value. I believe I have value. But he says I have no value." Which then causes you to question yourself. Which comes out as stress. Higher heart rate. Restless sleep. All the stuff that you remember from high school when someone bullied you or decided not to invite you to the cool kids' parties or something like that. I tried to break the loop in a few ways. None of which are really satisfying. So I decided to blog and be vulnerable. Hey, it's cheaper than therapy!

3. After the initial shock of "he did WHAT?" wore off it just brought on a form of grief. It reminded me of how my divorce felt. It's a toxic mixture of grief, guilt, self questioning. As with all feelings, time makes it somewhat better, but it is toxic.

4. When I was going through the divorce my friend +Buzz Bruggeman told me "take the high road." My son told me to do the same thing this time. Taking the high road is incredibly difficult when you are feeling grief, guilt, pain, etc. This is why I made it not about him, but about me. But I found a way out of this: do something nice for someone else. I've already started down that path. Transmute all the toxic stuff into focusing on helping someone else. Anytime I feel the toxic feelings I go and try to do something nice for someone else. Even liking or +1'ing someone else's post feels better than letting the toxic loop in your head go unchecked.

5. Take some joy in the fact that by blocking him he's hurt himself beyond just the loss of friendship. I do put a lot of value into my social networking, sharing lots of things from other people who are smart (especially true on my Facebook account: https://www.facebook.com/RobertScoble) and by building lists (he removed himself from those lists, by blocking, which lost him a lot of followers). He also is an entrepreneur, and might want some PR someday (I played a key role in the launch of many companies, including YO http://venturebeat.com/2014/07/18/how-yo-became-one-of-the-most-viral-apps-of-all-time-step-by-step/ which now has had more than 100 million YO's sent).

At one point the argument became about my self-centeredness. Well, yes, I am a selfish butthead sometimes. Always am working on it, with the help of many of my friends and others. But part of doing social media requires being a bit selfish. Hey, isn't it selfish to tell billionaires how to run their companies? Why yes! But my boss +Rob La Gesse reminds me that he wants me to do only one thing: be helpful to other people. So when I'm off that track it requires me to look at myself and fix my thinking. I'm far from perfect. So a whack upside the head is sometimes needed. But a block isn't a whack, it's a nuclear weapon.

6. I did learn about how deeply Facebook block works, though. I can't see anything this guy does anymore. Even our Messages back and forth now only says "Facebook User" instead of his name. I learned he had blocked me because I wanted to message him and Facebook wouldn't let me see his page anymore. I wonder how it differs from how LinkedIn, Twitter, or Google+ works (Twitter, I know, will still let you see that person's public posts). I generally only block spammers, so haven't played with that functionality enough to understand it.

Anyway, I'm on my way to Korea. Travel makes stress worse, because you are tired and you don't have friends to talk with face-to-face and my wife isn't there to give me a hug after a bad day. On the other hand, being alone gives me the whitespace to look at myself.

Onward, welcome to the new, improved, Scoble. :-)___

Mirror Mirror on the Wall, which social network is best to study breaking news on?

Over on Twitter we're having quite a debate. Started with this tweet by Lauren Lockliear: https://twitter.com/LaurenLockliear/status/499997133446328320

Which links to this article: https://medium.com/message/ferguson-is-also-a-net-neutrality-issue-6d2f3db51eb0

Which then drew in Anthony De Rosa, who is editor in chief of Circa (a great news app). https://twitter.com/AntDeRosa

Then the debate went crazy. Which system is better than the other for breaking news.

I say Facebook. He says Twitter. I get where he is coming from.

After all, if you have Twitter scrolling down the screen using either the Twitter app (I use the Mac one) or a good third-party app, like Hootsuite (which is what Anthony uses) then you'll see everything in real time,ri... more »

After all, if you have Twitter scrolling down the screen using either the Twitter app (I use the Mac one) or a good third-party app, like Hootsuite (which is what Anthony uses) then you'll see everything in real time, right?

OK, let me take a deep breath and unpack several of the issues that came up here (see the original article linked to on this post over on Medium).

POINT ONE: Filters suck, they keep people from seeing the news over on Facebook.

That is both true and not true. On MY screen I'm seeing almost nothing BUT Ferguson discussed. Why? Because I have friended people who bring me great news. I have those people in lists. For instance, I have 534 tech journalists in this list on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lists/10150896044944655 I have a similar list over on Twitter, with 657 tech news folks: https://twitter.com/Scobleizer/lists/tech-news-people So I can compare both all day long.

I also have a list of Major News outlets on Twitter ( https://twitter.com/Scobleizer/lists/world-news-brands ) and I follow a similar news list on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lists/2363411216469

You will see news break just as fast on both.

But the argument is that most news doesn't get through to the main feed. THAT is true, again, sort of. Most posts suck on Facebook (and on Twitter and on Google+ too).

But lists show all, and in almost real time. Provably so, because I watch how fast things get posted all the time (it's my job to watch, especially in tech industry).

This is why I did the video last week about why Facebook is running away with the game: https://plus.google.com/events/c54hhsqnoe29kvmbt6s64jbkl7c

But, let's dig in, because there are advantages to lots of different social networks for different reasons.

TWITTER ADVANTAGES (clear wins):
1. You can search for news content. In real time. THIS IS A HUGE win for Twitter, and is one of the reasons I still keep it on my screen all day long.
2. You see all stuff that you follow (on Facebook you have to use lists to see all).
3. No news bias, because no filtering. (Facebook's filters are affected by a wide variety of things, including user behavior, which CAN induce bias).
4. Bias toward being public. On Twitter, the default is public. Yes, you can be private with your account, but most people aren't.

TWITTER/FACEBOOK TIES (not clear wins)
1. Scrolling content. Twitter scrolls, but not on mobile phone. In reality, I just keep a browser window open to Facebook (and another to Google+) and it auto refreshes. Yeah, you could say Twitter is seconds faster, but in reality that doesn't matter unless you are a news hound. Even there, Facebook, on my browsers, has a window over to the right where my friends' content scrolls in real time and that is NOT filtered.
2.

FACEBOOK ADVANTAGES (clear wins)
1. Far less noise than Twitter, which makes it more likely to see news that will affect you.
2. Contextual news (I see news about where I live, because Facebook knows where I am. Twitter doesn't try to show me news about where I am.
3. More news for average users. Facebook will bring you news your friends are commenting on, sharing, or liking. So, even if you have five friends (who are active) chances are you'll see the big story of the day (when Robin Williams died I saw the news within seconds on both services, my wife actually saw it on Facebook before I even saw it on Twitter).
4. Better photos and easier to see what articles really have a lot of engagement. Facebook shows numbers of comments. I don't see numbers of replies on Twitter. (Compare how both lists look, that I gave above).

Anyway, let this kick off the great debate. I wrote this post very quickly, so probably missed a whole lot. I'll link to this from both Twitter and Facebook.

Let the debate begin!

UPDATE: you all know where I stand. I like Facebook better.___

I've kept this off of Google+, because I tried to deal with +United Airlines over on Twitter. But damn, having 700,000 lifetime miles, along with two VIP travelers who run a PR firm, and a social media loudmouth with millions of followers still isn't enough to get United to take care of a customer and a friend. https://www.facebook.com/RobertScoble/posts/10152617677939655 Sorry, you gotta be on Facebook to see the sordid tale.

I won't fly United if I have a choice. What did that cost them? Well, let's see, my son flies from NYC to SFO every few months. Ayelet and Motti fly from Israel to US every few weeks. I fly around the world.

All pissed off because of rules. For a flight that won't happen until January.

Turns out that pissing off customers is bad for business. Which is why I try not to do it in my job. Sometimes I fail, but I remember that everytime I do fail it hurts everyone involved.___

+Thomas Hawk and I are talking about how the filters work on Facebook and why they aren't as nice to photographers as Google+ is.

Which got me a ton of questions about my feed, and what I'm seeing/learning about how the filters work and how to "game" them to get things through to more people's feeds on Facebook.

I'm linking to here from Facebook, so there.

Product Hunt is my favorite new site (it's a place to learn about new products and then rate them).

Today I was on its radio show. Yeah, I get a bit racy with my language but when you get me candid that's what happens. We talk about lots of things product related, like how products get launched, etc etc.

Hope you find it interesting and visit http://www.producthunt.com to find new products!
