Hi everyone, I can recommend this highly. It is a very short read, but has become in a very short timespan one of my favourite sci-fi books/shorts. An interesting synopsis, of the concepts being explored here.
For those that've read it, what are your thoughts?
What strike me most was the age of this text and it's non-violent extrapolation of the future.

A friend's short film in tribute to the 1982 film Blade Runner.
It's still in production (effects and sound being completed by July). Still found it interesting.

Found this short read quite interesting: Don't stop thinking about tomorrow - Nesta (Independent UK ideation charity).
Maxims for thinking about the future
1.New forms of data–driven forecasting tell us valuable things about the near future. There is scope for experimenting with these techniques
in order to find out what works.
2. Thinking about plausible future scenarios can help guard against fragility. Governments and businesses need foresight capabilities in order to
address systemic challenges.
3. Innovation starts with a story about the future. Imagining and sharing desires and fears about the futures is a way for all of us to shape it.

" The telco industry charges more, kilobyte by kilobyte, for sending a text message from your phone to next door than what it costs to send the same message from Mars to Earth. This is the apex in this series of the dysfunctional telecom market, giving a background to why the telecom industry wants control of the Internet so badly, and is using every conceivable resource to stall, prevent, and delay its resulting economic development. "
And people wonder why they want to go after the Internet now?

Open letter to Department of Communications, South Africa about the ITU:
As a teacher, user and advocate of open source concepts and languages, and digital native I find a meeting behind closed doors about the future of the Internet very disturbing. SOPA and ACTA has already been torn asunder, but it seems that the powers that be, come with bigger plans of control every time.
As a security and privacy concerned citizen I feel very strongly that the Internet should not be segmented, censored or have its use overly monitored. Secure end-to-end communications isn't only the birthright of citizens worldwide but also by and large a way for people to freely express, creatively explore and anonymously voice concerns about corrupt officials.

I have an idea.
IBM should modify Watson to give it the ability to interpret laws and contracts. Given a set of facts or fact probabilities about a case it should be able to output a probable verdict along with a list of laws or legal tests that were broken. This computer would be programmed by inputting written laws and contract which it would compile into legal tests and logic models that can be used to generate the verdict.
Even it it was just used as support to help courts untangle cases or for law student as an educational tool, it could be a useful machine.
Here is the kicker: All laws and contracts are software code for this machine.
The existence of this type of computer means all legal documents should now be subject to software patents and copyright.
I say let the lawyers sweat in fear of intellectual property infringement every time they ... more »

“Once a threshold-induced planetary state shift occurs, there’s no going back. So, if a system switches to a new state because you’ve added lots of energy, even if you take out the new energy, it won’t revert back to the old system. The planet doesn’t have any memory of the old state.”
