This week on the FTC Blog, read about Parker Owen, The FTC and FRC student who created a prosthetic leg out of a $20 bicycle and won the 2013 FFIA Award for his work!

My small group communication team is putting on a walking event to support Boston bombing victims. We are considering selling a tee shirt as part of our project. If we offered a tee shirt that looked something like this, would you be interested in buying it? Feedback is welcome.

I had the pleasure of seeing this team live at the Silicon Valley Regional.
This is why I love FIRST!

I had a lot of fun in +FIRST Tech Challenge over the last four years with my two teams! I've moved on to mentoring now (and finishing out my time in FRC) and preparing for my first term at +Oregon Institute of Technology, but my teams (4666 and 6742) are still having lots of fun with technology and FTC robots! They've started a Google+ community open to anyone interested, especially other FTC teams who want to join in the discussion and share their work.

It does not matter if you work or you don't work. It does not matter if you work in a office or work at home. It does not matter if you are an introvert or an extrovert. Almost all of the time, in small and big ways, you are trying to persuade another human being.
Hence if there is one skill you should get good at, it is probably getting better at the art of persuasion.
And in helping you get better at that, there are few people as engaging and, ahem, persuasive, as Dr. Robert Cialdini. It was so amazing to see him live.
Here's is a great 11 min video that does a great job of providing you with a hyper fast and valuable education on getting better at the science of persuasion.

Doing my high school at COCC is especially great when I can get indoor rock climbing as a PE class. Having lots of fun at BRG! What a cool playground!

I really like the new Google+ iOS UI! It feels very upbeat and all-around Googly!
The new feature-set as well as minor improvements are noticeably great, too. When I click the photo icon I immediately have access to instant upload photos. It doesn't re-define the already great Google+, but it certainly will keep me coming back. Very pleasant app experience!

Hello there, I'm Nate. I work at PixelWorks Studios as a photographer and studio assistant. I shoot with a Canon EOS 7D primarily using a 24-105 f/4L, a 70-200 f/2.8L, and a 14 prime f/2.8L. I really enjoy my work and being part of this community!

Cool robots! Thanks 5200 for uploading all of this. Some of these innovative designs are motivating improvements for the Loco-Motives (4666) and sister team Electronical Engineers (6742). There's a lot to be learned from watching these strategies and robots.
FIRST rocks.

The Electronical Engineers, sister team to the Loco-Motives, is developing an arm prototype for this year's FIRST Tech Challenge game. The team of mostly middle school students is implementing statics and dynamics concepts to make sure the arm can raise and lower easily without tipping the robot. They're also programming preset positions so their arm can raise to the height of each goal with the press of a button then be fine tuned from there.
Challenges so far have been using bearing surfaces on the joints for smooth movement and determining the right length of moment arm on the reverse side to provide enough reactive moment without breaking the string planned to drive the arm or moving the center of mass too far back so gravity still creates enough moment to drop the arm.

The Fliz bike... No pedals, gears, or seat. Not that I'd take this up a hill, but it certainly looks more fun than a skateboard for doing effectively the same thing.

Events would be really interesting if a list of local, public events was easily viewable, especially on mobile, then refined for the things Google thinks you'll like best, a feature hopefully also with an opt-out for different result orders.

Check out this beautiful collection of photos revealing how transport and communication systems work in the US, even the routes taken by pizza delivery drivers in New York City.
Has anyone come across a more global series? Would be interesting to compare different countries.

This is a Plea
My 40D seems to have died this afternoon. As far as I can tell, it's a sensor issue. My images all turn up blank (black). I need to send it in for repair, or replace it, but I honestly can't afford it right now. Even a couple hundred bucks would break the budget, and if you know me, photography is the one thing I live for.
This really hurts me to ask, because I'd rather give to the community here than receive from it, but if there's something I've shot that you would like on your wall, now would be a really good time to consider it. I'll sign it, mat it, and send it to you. If it's not in my galleries already, let me know, and I'll add it.
I need to keep shooting, and am not sure I can without your help.
I know this is very forward, and asking a lot. I apologize for that. I'm not sure what else to... more »

Researcher builds Internet Protocol network using xylophones. Yeah, that's right -- xylophones.
R. Stuart Geiger, a graduate student at the Berkeley's School of Information, led the project.
Geiger's network protocol, Internet Protocol over Xylophone Players (IPoXP), provides a fully compliant IP connection between two computers. His setup uses a pair of Arduino microcontrollers, some sensors, a pair of xylophones and two people to play the xylophones.
The Arduino is connected to a series of LEDs. When the Arduino lights up an LED, the human player strikes the corresponding key on the xylophone.
The transmission rate is about one character per second, or one baud. That's still faster than hotel room Wi-Fi.

Per Jayden Newstead (who is on G+ but I can't +mention for some reason) arxiv.org/pdf/1205.1568v1.pdf says the odds of supersymmetry with respect the the Standard Model alternative have been reduced by a factor of 5,000 by LEP, LHC and the 125GeV Higgs observations.

This new technology is amazing. This is how mobile devices and computers fade into the background and we can just focus on living and being human
Touché: Enhancing Touch Interaction on Humans, Screens, Liquids, and Everyday Objects
Let's discuss the applications:
1) No more keyboards
2) Yet we may still need output devices or digital displays
3) No more keys
4) More efficient energy use (notice at end of video how lights dim as persons state changes to sleep)
At Altimeter, we call this business theme part of the "Sentient World" where everything around us becomes self aware and intelligent. Hat tip to +Jon Cifuentes who sent this link to me.

In my last physics lab, my group was given the task of designing a vessel that could cool a boiling liquid to equilibrium temperature in fewer than 30 minutes. We determined that having high surface area would be our primary strategy to do this. My group proceeded to rotate y = 1/x around the x-axis and adjust the domain until we had the appropriate volume. Problem solved! Next?
