3 sisters in the mist

The mist was very insense last weekend while trying to capture winter scenes not far from home.

When I noticed these trees lying tight against each other, I had the feeling that, in their way, they were just here trying to warm up together in this cold and silent winter.
If only these trees could speak...

This is another view of the "micro storm" photo I shared a few months ago. I have never posted this view before, but I think it may show even better how unique this event really was. The Gulf of Mexico was like glass. Most of the sky was saturated blue.  The dark clouds above us suddenly opened up releasing this waterfall rain shower from the sky.

Seen at Kiev Landscape Park. Since these tulips are not for sale, only display, they are planted so that not all bloom at the same time. So it could have been better!

Lost but not forgotten This morning I headed out to Sachuest Point National in Middletown, Rhode Island. This is the first time I have been back in awhile since the roads and nature preserve have been closed due to storm damage from hurricane Sandy. It was a late night last night but somehow I still managed to get up at 4:30am and capture this 186 second exposure along the shore.

I also happen to run into +Bryan Bzdula  in the parking lot as we were both leaving, funny we both were shooting not to far from each other yet we both didn't know each other were heading out there.

3 raw files processed in lightroom and exported to photomatix. tonmapped image re worked on in lightroom . tonemapped and the 3 main images loaded into photoshop to blend together 0 ev image sky  masked back in, 
fog layers made up in photoshop  ,selective sharpening  also in photoshop, back to lightroon for vignette

My first #equinetuesday w/ +Jillian Chilson.

It was very surreal to be hiking through this field in the middle of a National Forest and come across a group of horses with no sign of owners, especially in the thick fog. It was actually a good bit darker than I've portrayed with my processing so you can tack that onto the surreal feeling.

"Tecumseh"

I post this picture today for a few reasons.  This is Tecumseh and his parents were Matoaka (Pocahontas) and Chautauqua.  When I named him and his sister, I kept the tradition going and gave them strong native names.  By the way, Tecumseh means a few things: Shooting Star, Crouching Panther or Panther Passing Across.  What could be better.

Yesterday, I was told at work that Tecumseh was to be honoured on a Canadian coin.  I must have looked puzzled but it soon clicked that it was who my Tecumseh was named after.  Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief, died in the War of 1812 fighting with the British.  He tried to create a federation of tribes and traveled from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico promoting this.  His story is really one all Canadians and Americans should know.  It is amazing what he accomplished for the Native People.

Magnolia Bloom

They last such a short time, these large waxy blooms edged with pink and they fill the air with an intoxicating fragrance which is almost overwhelming. The petals close protectively over the precious centres in the night and they take the punishment inflicted by frost and wind, preventing damage to the future seeds. On a warm sunny day they open generously to allow us to see these fronds, like anemone tentacles.

As soon as we get a good rain and a wind, the beauty of the flowers is blemished and we have to wait until next year to see the magnificence of these blooms again. 

Posting something I was inspired to photograph is more important to me than posting something to a theme that I don't feel. I couldn't fit this into symmetry and see no reason to, so apologies to the  #weeklyphotoproject2013  followers.

Salmon Hunters

This is an early autumn sunrise at Algoma, Wisconsin. Fisherman line the piers in hopes of catching the salmon that make their way from Lake Michigan into the harbor and up the Ahnapee River to spawn.

This particular morning, low level fog covered the lake just beyond the piers. You can’t see them, but there were fishing boats trolling just outside of the harbor opening.

There is nothing like springtime and young love.  I was lucky enough to shoot pictures yesterday with my daughter and her fiance.  They were looking for some engagement photos.  As my friend +Tawni Henlin always says - "I don't shoot people."
