There are so many things we overlook each day. I love discovering nature and how it's mere existence or lack thereof is linked back to the human race. Ten years ago this was just a bug to me, five years ago an 'orange bug' three years ago a 'skipper', and now I think it's a Delaware Skipper which feeds on specific grass and flowers growing on our property.
Life is a delicate balancing act. If we destroy habitat specific to insects and animals, we are destroying them. They play a vital role in our existence. When we destroy them, we're slowly destroying ourselves.

A female Wood Thrush tends to her nest in the forest. Their nest is constructed in deep woods in a tree or shrub that provides concealment and shelter. It's made of dead grass, stems, leaves, and lined with mud, usually placed in the fork of a horizontal branch.

NOT WEEDS! Ragged Robin is a herbaceous perennial plant that blooms from May to August and is an important food source for butterflies and long-tongued bees that feed on the flowers nectar. Beautiful delicate pink flowers with five narrow petals deeply divided into four lobes give this flower it's ragged appearance.

For those of you who don't know me, I'm a Binghamton, New York based fine art photographer. I have been photographing wildlife and landscapes in central New York for several years now. My photographic journey began in 2006 when someone challenged me to photograph a hummingbird in flight. I've always had a strong connection to nature and animals as well as a natural ability for photography, art, and design. My skills have developed from within my heart and reflect my true passion to protect wildlife and preserve nature.

A male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird defends his territory on a rainy day from this branch near a hummingbird feeder.

Believe it or not a rainy day is one of the best days to photograph hummingbirds! Since most flowers are closed and bugs are scarce during a rain shower, hummingbirds will visit feeders more frequently. Ours visit about once every 10-15 minutes.
This feeder hangs in front of our kitchen window from a gutter. Because we have a large soffit I'm able to keep the window open without getting wet. All I have to do is sit inside and wait patiently for a hummingbird to show up.
On an overcast day lighting conditions won't be perfect so you will need to increase ISO, and if you photograph them while their sitting on a feeder there's no need to worry about shutter speed.
