First the US lost manufacturing, now bye bye tech
I don't want to single out Apple in all this; every company actively uses and buys tax loopholes with campaign $'s. This article makes a useful connection between unpaid taxes and nonstop lobbying for cheaper, indentured H1B tech workers. This is the same exact thing that manufacturing companies did in the 80's when they successfully lobbied for rules to ship manufacturing abroad. In the short term, they lowered costs. In the long term, they wiped out domestic jobs and purchasing power - for their own products.
The net effect of getting cheap foreign talent will be the same. It will improve short-term competitiveness, but ultimately lower all tech wages and cause domestic education to languish further without proper investment. Very shortsighted.

Samsung Galaxy S4 ships on Verizon: Shootout of camera
The Samsung Galaxy S4 just arrived in Verizon stores today. I dropped by. One thing I noticed? No lines at the stores. Of course there weren't many S4's there either (I bought it from a smaller store in Pacifica, California). I got the last one, a white one. Yes, I paid my own money for it. Samsung doesn't give me review units.
Here are images from it compared with my HTC DNA. So far I like the Samsung a LOT better than the HTC. First if all it's running the current Android, 4.2.2, while the DNA is running 4.1.1. Too bad HTC, but Samsung beat you there. After that everything else is better too. The screen is better, the speed is better.
Can you see any differences from the images? One thing: Google+ is enhancing all the images now. You can see the original by clicking on the &... more »

New Belgium Lips of Faith Cascara Quad
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/192/89936/
I actually thought this was pretty decent, after being let down by most of my recent LofF endeavors.
It's not overy complex or well integrated like a top-shelf Belgian quad, but easily drinkable and enjoyable. Figs, and cherries are the dominant elements with a lingering raisiny sweetness. The slightest touch of chocolate.
Somwhat thin bodied and I would say a bit under carbonated. But enjoyable.
3.75 / 5.0

This interesting rock formation was in a private secret beach (only accessible via trail through the brush and climbing down a cliff). I loved to capture the waves as they try their damnedest to smooth its rough edges.

This is supposed to be the water profiles of the Trappist brewery's.
Funny note, according to Swedish regulations the Chloride levels for Westvleteren water makes it unsuitable for consumption, here the threshold value is 100. =)

The Rise of Too Big to Fail, In One Chart
This chart shows that #TBTF is a relatively recent phenomenon in the United States—one that only really surfaced over the past 15 years with the slow erosion of Glass-Steagall (among other factors).
It's a chart that shows good news and bad news.
The good news: It's proof that the United States has succeeded—even thrived!—when the biggest banks were less concentrated (think of all the economic growth post-WWII). This means we don't need megabanks on Wall Street in order to have tremendous economic growth as some Wall Street executives tell us.
The bad news: It's proof that these banks have more power than ever and are therefore more resistant to change. After all, ending "too big to fail" will lead to less revenue for megabank executives, so they're fiercely opposed to it and have th... more »

“I am Me. In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me. Everything that comes out of me is authentically mine, because I alone chose it -- I own everything about me: my body, my feelings, my mouth, my voice, all my actions, whether they be to others or myself.
I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears.
I own my triumphs and successes, all my failures and mistakes. Because I own all of me, I can become intimately acquainted with me. By so doing, I can love me and be friendly with all my parts.
I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other aspects that I do not know -- but as long as I am friendly and loving to myself, I can courageously and hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles and ways to find out more about me.
However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time is authentically me. If la... more »

Abel Prize 2013
Report by +Edward Frenkel
The Abel Prize, the mathematical recognition often considered the equivalent of the Nobel Prize was awarded today in Oslo to the Belgian mathematician Pierre Deligne. The Abel Prize is worth NOK 6,000,000 (~ € 800,000 or US$ 1 million).
Deligne’s most spectacular results are on the interface of two areas of mathematics: number theory and geometry. At first glance, the two subjects appear to be light-years apart. As the name suggests, number theory is the study of numbers, such as the familiar natural numbers (1, 2, 3, and so on) and fractions, or more exotic ones, such as the square root of two. Geometry, on the other hand, studies shapes, such as the sphere or the surface of a donut. But French mathematician André Weil had a penetrating insight that the two subjects are in fact closely related.
