Stormy Sky

"The gods are out there having a party"!

At least they were according to my relatives over here on the big island of Hawaii. I think I need to take a quick trip over to check out the current crop of beans :)

Stormy skies were the norm during my last trip over to the "farm". I think it rained about 4 inches a day for several days in a row. It really doesn't matter though - because it's a warm rain ;)

Sunset on the Rocks

I had the opportunity to go out and watch the sunset last night here in San Francisco. Low tide here at Sutro Baths, even with monster surf, can be both calming and demanding. Not very easy shooting conditions, but +Amy Heiden and I (where were you +Michael Bonocore?) tried to make it work.

I do love the ocean - and I always try to remember to give her the respect that she commands.

I Am Not Alone

The ocean and I have a long long history. I have lived many many days of my life upon her surface, and I do not think that I will ever be able to stay away from her for very long. Nor will I ever lose respect for her. Her power can be strong for anybody who allows themselves to get close to her.

You are in my thoughts today Jim Peterson. It was such a pleasure to know you. My friend +Jonathan Goody said it as well as anybody (https://plus.google.com/111557988109638065224/posts/EiZ9B24o9XC)

waiting for poseidon

it was crazy, windy, rainy weather this evening. we drove over to cape sounion and the waves on the beach under poseidon's temple were crashing all the way up to the umbrellas. i spotted a chair in front of the fish tavern, which looked interesting...

... but i could barely see what i was doing, let alone have a clear lens to shoot with.

edit: i forgot to say i got my shoes wet.-

the northwest corner of the forbidden city

this is a panorama of three HDR captures.

i'd spent the golden hour up on jingshan park, the hill directly north of the forbidden city, to get a few overview photos. it fairly dark as i descended and walked towards the metro. i approached the corner of the moat and sat down a while on the ledge to take in this popular view... and i thought, why not and set up my tripod.

this is one of my first HDRs.

edit: +Vinod Krishnamoorthy asked that i describe my process for this image.

briefly, i bracketed three exposures for three positions, as is normal. i batch processed each HDR image in photomatix to ensure consistent tonemapping and then i stitched the images. a bit more processing in photoshop, and i was done.

the lunar eclipse over athens

i didn't expect to be able to see it... but +Anthony Ayiomamitis proved me wrong!
i should've changed location -- a bit over to the left and i'd've had a better composition, but i wasn't familiar with the area and it was getting dark.

still, i'm pleased that i saw it, and that i had the chance to capture it.

i have another, without the acropolis, that i'll upload later.

∞ ablaze

i wasn't going to post this, because it's blurry and not very good -- but i still like it, so there it is.

i was minding my own business, fast asleep in my tent on the beach, when i heard a whoosh and opened my eyes to see bright light flying around. i looked outside my little window to see a guy playing with these (+Tanya Plonka says they're called poi -- thank you!) on the beach. i grabbed my camera, set what i could and held my breath as i handheld for the duration from inside the tent.

more editing brought out some light.

he left these these thingies (_poi_) on the beach overnight, so when i got up in the morning, i played a bit with them after my swim. i'm quite coordinated, you know.

Farewell San Francisco - and a Live Hangout Tonight! ...see how I made this photo!

So I just heard from Apple, and we have been allowed to do a Live Google+ Hangout from the event tonight. So, Google+Apple -- it will be sort of like a special Buffy+Angel crossover episode.

Time: Tonight, Saturday, 5-7 PM PT (Your World Time: http://bit.ly/nUNHRU )
Where: watch live at http://keithbarrett.tv

For the Apple event here in Austin tonight, here is what I will be discussing:

- My Workflow. I will even process photos from the PhotoWalk last night with Thomas. Maybe even a photo of Thomas!
- Yes, I'll be screen-sharing so you can see where I am clicking and all the details
- Photography topics… my approach and more…
- Tools I use
- How I use Lightroom
- And an extensive Q&A from people in theaud... more »

If you are in Austin (remember, 7-9 PM CST!), you can come to the Barton Creek location and be there in person. But, perhaps for overcrowding concerns, you can watch online at the link above. The event is free, either way.

Photo Below: I took this a few nights ago thanks to Stuck on Earth. I've been to San Francisco over seven times to take photos, and not until this time did I finally find special locations and shots I've always wanted. I just processed this on the flight from SFO to AUS, and I can talk more about the processing tonight in the hangout. Okay, I gotta take a shower to get ready and stuff… see you soon! :)___

A Pileus Iridescent Cloud Over Ethiopia

Pictured, behind this darker cloud, is a pileus iridescent cloud, a group of water droplets that have a uniformly similar size and so together diffract different colors of sunlight by different amounts. This image was taken just after the picturesque sight was noticed by chance by a photographer in Ethiopia.
