This past Saturday I had the pleasure of hanging out with +Pat Kight while getting back to doing something I love and miss shooting - sports.
This bout was between Albany's Sick Town Derby Dames' S*M*A*S*H Unit (dark blue) and Eugene's Emerald City Andromedolls (Gray). Here Coperna Cuss gives Blood Stain a little tug as she tries to get by (which I'm pretty sure is not allowed).
I have several more to post, but I feel a grungy composite coming first.

Mystery Ho!
Yes, kids. This is the week where the mystery is on. Hopefully you are not only there but also on - your game that it. This actually is a square image, but G+ may crop it in some displays, so view full size if you want to get the whole picture (literally, though not necessarily figuratively).

The Harvard art museums renovation has made progress since I last walked by. It's not easy to photograph (and I didn't do a great job even considering), but the siding here creates zillions of parallel lines at just the right frequency to have a serious op-art effect from across the street. I don't think every member of my family saw it the same way I did, but the whole thing was visually buzzing while I looked at it.
I'm a sucker for this sort of perceptual manipulation, so I heartily approve.

Einstein's Fatherly Advice
via +Maria Popova 's wonderful Brain Pickings comes this bit of advice from Albert Einstein's letter to his son, Hans Albert Einstein, sent on November 4, 1915, just after the senior Einstein finished his paper describing the theory of relativity. Just as Einstein's passion for physics led to his own great enjoyment and changed our world along the way, Einstein urged his son to find and follow his own passion.
The full letter reads:
My dear Albert,
Yesterday I received your dear letter and was very happy with it. I was already afraid you wouldn’t write to me at all any more. You told me when I was in Zurich, that it is awkward for you when I come to Zurich. Therefore I think it is better if we get together in a different place, where nobody will interfere with our comfort. I will in any case urge that each y... more »

Happy Father's Day: Daddy Dedication, Seahorse Style...
Following on my post on the unsung dad's of the animal kingdom (http://goo.gl/j7sVk), here's a wonderful video from The Deep, in Hull, Yorkshire, showing one of those unsung dad's in action: A male seahorse giving birth - and not just to one or two babies.... this species can have nearly 2000 babies at once.
Two other types of fish related to the Seahorse - the Stickleback and the Pipefish, part of the Syngnathiade family of fish - also have quite dedicated dads. The Stickleback males build nests for females to deposit their eggs for fertilization, and then the males guard the eggs until they hatch. Pipefish carry the eggs with then, like Seahorses, sometimes attached to their underbellies and sometimes in pouches.
there are some great images of male Pipefish giving birth... more »

Don't Blame the Weatherman: The Strange Attraction of the Lorenz Attractor
Back in the early 1960s, meteorologist Edward Lorenz was trying to model weather patterns to give long term forecasts. In the course of running his models with slightly different numbers input, he realized that even very small differences at the outset could develop into radically large differences later - this chaos in our real-world weather makes long-term forecasts unreliable.
As described in a student paper from the University of Waterloo (http://goo.gl/uEA7y), Chaos Theory and the Lorenz Equation: History, Analysis, and Application, Lorenz wrote about his discovery of chaos in weather systems this way:
_I typed in some of the intermediate conditions which the computer had printed out as new initial conditions to start another computation and then went out for a while. Afterwards, I... more »

MysteryMonday Summer Sched
We are moving to "summer hours" for #MysteryMonday given hectic travel schedules etc. We'll try to do one or two a month through the summer, and will notify people via the top secret #MysteryMonday circle. Anyone who circles +MysteryMonday is automatically in the circle, that's how top secret it is...
If you'd like to be put in a less elite "sure I'll circle +MysteryMonday, but I don't want to be notified of when the games begin" circle, just let me know and we'll move you to the second string other circle.
Meanwhile, even when we're not playing the game and giving out awesome prizes, I'll try to share some mysterious photos here for people to see.
And just for those of you who were hoping for a real mystery today, here's a special prize to keep you going through the ... more »

Vision: How the World Gets into the Brain
It's always hard watching public science presentations right in your field, but as a vision scientist/neuroscientist, although I'd quibble with a few things (e.g., the discussion of object perception made me cringe a little), overall this video is pretty darn good!
It covers many of the basics and does so in a really entertaining and engaging way. So much so, that I've now subscribed to ZoggFromBetelguese to learn more about other people's areas in the future. I'm always less likely to cringe if it's about someone else's area of science :)
At a minimum, you'll learn why human vision isn't at all like the sensor systems of levy drones, why the Glubobs have the worst brass bands in the galaxy, and why aliens with only one eye should stay away from 3D movies. It even features ... more »

Rock and Roll Marathon: Dribbling to Victory
A friend of mine, Jim Garfield, ran the San Diego Rock and Roll half-marathon this morning and passed on a few shots from the race. Not the kind of runners you'll see in every race....
I assume the phone checking Mohawk man was looking for a message from his agent. I'd hire him, just not sure for what.
The other fellow I was able to identify more easily. His name is Darren Weissman, aka Dr. Dribble, because, well, he likes to dribble basketballs. And he's pretty good at it too. So good, in fact, that he held the world record time for running a marathon while dribbling two basketballs the whole way (you gotta love the Guinness World Record folks, they've thought of everything): back in February, he ran the A1A Marathon in Ft. Lauderdale in 4 hours and 39 minutes - taking the record away from... more »

Periodic Scrabble
Scrabble and the Periodic Table each just not geeky enough for you on their own?
SCoRe MoRe FUN WITh BOTh
Elemensus combines the best of word play and chemistry to challenge you like never BeFORe.
Only the letters and letter combinations from the periodic table can be used to form words, which ups the ante over Scrabble considerably (according to one calculation, only about 15% of the legal Scrabble words are allowed with the periodic table constraints: http://yanwong.me/?p=316). And while you are challenging the language centers of the brain, you just might soak up a bit more chemistry along the way.

Thanks +Natalie Villalobos for the invite - great initiative.
I'm a vision scientist/cognitive neuroscientist with a long-standing interest in tech and mind/machine interactions. My lab does behavioural and EEG research on face and object recognition, pattern vision, motion perception, perceptual learning and neural plasticity, visual attention, multimodal integration, and aging (among other things - e.g., collaborative work in autism and schizophrenia).
My lab is increasingly interested in serious games and learning, and we are keen to bring an aging research perspective to the tech dev world (including age-related usability and more). The Braces: Two Years
For any folks into pop-punk, check out The Braces' new album, Two Years.
Disclaimer, the lead singer, Zack, is my cousin-ish, but I'm not biased, they're just really great.
If you don't believe me, check out the review from thepunksite.com
From the review: "At this point, there’s little more to say than if you like pop-punk of any variety, it’s high time you checked out The Braces. Much like what’s been said about The Wonder Years, Two Years is an invigorating slap to the face that is sure to wake up anyone discontent with the current state of pop-punk. The Braces are officially on my radar, and if they’re not on yours, then that needs to change."
For my G+ friends lucky enough to live in the LA area, keep an eye out for them as they play more often near you than near me.

Motoring for the Masses: Tin Lizzie
A few people asked if I could post a pic of the full Model T I found, rather than just the sumptuous curves I shared earlier for +Project 52 B&W , so here she is in all her glory.
And, since it's still #ScienceSunday here, thought I'd share a little background information about this technological wonder of its time.
Most folks know it was the world's first mass produced car, or as Henry Ford said, the car that "democratized" the automobile industry. More than 15 million were built, and Ford held up to 40% of the market share through the Model T at one point. But you might not know some of the details abut what went on inside the car.
From history.com: The engine was simple and efficient, with all four cylinders cast in a single block and the cylinder head detachable for easy access and... more »

MysteryMonday Brownies
Today is Victoria Day aka the end of the May 2-4 weekend, so named because it occurs around May 24, and because here in Canada we call a case of beer a 2-4 (24 cans or bottles in a case).
We won't have a #MysteryMonday tonight because we're celebrating with family and friends, but I didn't forget all the MM g+niuses - I made you all some brownies!! Much more tasty than a rusty pole or dried mud (although perhaps that depends on your gustatory preferences and whether you have an iron deficiency....).
If enough people are interested, I'm happy to add in the recipe - but only if you like extremely rich, delicious, slightly gooey brownies. If you like the super dry, cakey ones, these are not for you.
Happy May 2-4 everyone!

Maman
The B&W photo was my entry for the category Ant's Eye View in +Chrysta Rae 's Photography Scavenger Hunt. A few keen observers correctly identified it as one of Louise Bourgeois' sculptures - this one is located in Ottawa, but there are others in the UK, US, Russia, Spain, Japan, South Korea, and Qatar.
A notable feature of the spider is that it is carrying an egg sac, filled with 26 marble eggs. Hence the name, Maman, which is a French word for mother.
The fact that the egg sac is attached to the spider helps us narrow down the species (assuming the sac is there for the long haul), since most spider species separate themselves from their sacs: some guard them, others hide them, and others carry them around in their mouths.
Two species that keep the egg sac attached to their spinnerets include the Water Spider ... more »

Warp Drive: Science Fiction to Science Fact? Maybe!
In 1994, physicist Miguel Alcubierre proposed a concept for a real-life warp drive, but calculations found it required prohibitive amounts of energy. Now +NASA physicists say that adjustments can be made to Alcubierre's drive to use significantly less energy, maybe bringing warp drive back from sci-fi to science.
To begin, NASA hopes experiments with a "White-Juday Warp Field Interferometer" will generate and detect microscopic instances of little warp bubbles.

Pine Tree
We usually think of pine cones as having the shape of the sculpture in my photo - with the scales open. But the shape of the cone depends on the weather: when the cone gets wet, it closes up, and when it dries it opens up again.
This strategy helps ensure that the seeds contained within the cone can travel further through the air to grow in a wider range of locations. Even after all the seeds are gone, however, the moisture mediated opening and closing can continue, leading to all sorts of fun party tricks if you have a small pine cone at home...
One of the best tricks is to put a wet pine cone inside a bottle. When it dries, the scales will open and (if you picked the right shaped bottle) it won't fit out again. You can, of course, get it out again by adding water.
Recently, engineers were inspired by the pine cone's... more »

Gaming for Science
Did you ever wonder how the x-ray checkers at the airports can tell who has what in their bags? The Airport Scanner game lets you try your own skills at searching for illicit luggage, and my vision science colleague, +Stephen Mitroff , has partnered with the game company to try to figure out what's happening in our brains when we do these sorts of tasks.
Mitroff and his colleagues are interested in understanding how well people can pick complex shaped objects out of cluttered scenes, how performance varies with the rarity of occurrence (more than you might expect or hope, at least in university students who don't do this sort of thing for a living), and how people's performance changes with practice (which might be more relevant to the folks who do this sort of thing for a living).
