Last week for Squirrel Saturday I posted a shot of a red Squirrel poking his head out of a hole in a tree. This shot was taken a few days later and it is the same tree, the same hole and as far as I know the same squirrel.

This is one really lucky pigeon. This Cooper's Hawk actually had it pinned on the ground for just over a minute. Unfortunately for the hawk - fortunately for the pigeon - a car drove by and (possibly on purpose) scared the hawk away.

I'm guessing it's much MUCH worse on the East Coast, but the wind is really starting to gust here in Toronto. If you haven't done so already everyone, batten down the hatches and stay safe.

As I approach the end of sorting through and processing over 50,000 bird images I have shot in the last year I come across shots like this that I took in the spring. In the process of playing around I do have to wonder if I have gone too far by entirely removing the background from this shot?

I don't have a backyard so I don't get much of an opportunity to do backyard birding. Back at the end of July I visited Presqu'ile Provincial Park which is about 150KM east of Toronto. Just outside of Presqu'ile are some cottages and one on the cottagers is an avid birder that welcomes everyone onto his property to view the birds and butterflies that visit his garden and feeders.

As I update my website I am sorting through previous photos once again and found this shot I didn't realize I had. Although I have seen a lot worse, this is the main reason I am not a big fan of fishing.

If you do fish, don't leave anything behind because it isn't harmless.

On Wednesday I read a report of a rare bird sighted at Presqu'ile Provincial Park. I've been meaning to visit there again, so this was the excuse I needed. Off I went yesterday morning.

Rare bird? This is the first reported sighting of a Thick-billed Kingbird ever in Ontario and the last reported sighting in Canada was Vancouver Island in 1974.

According to Wikipedia, the range of this bird is normally from South-eastern Arizona and South-western New Mexico, through central and western Mexico and south into Guatemala.

It looks like I missed the Bird Poker Theme, but I only got this guy a couple of hours ago. Anyone who knows Belted Kingfishers know how cagey they can be and they are usually laughing at you as they fly away.

Anyway, I saw this guy land in this tree near where I was. I followed a path "pretending" not to notice him until I was close. Then I turned, pointed my camera and fired. This is the third of three shots before he flew away.

This time, though, he wasn't laughing at me because he knew I got him.

On Monday I drove 150KM to Presqu'ile Provincial Park in the hopes of getting some early fall migrants, especially shorebirds. Well the shorebirds were really quiet so I eventually moved on. This shot was taken at the Nature Centre where there is a stump set up for children to feed the Chipmunks. This little guy was wondering why I hadn't provided any.

Today this Ruby-throated Hummingbird had an itch that it needed to scratched.

Everyone knows that Hummingbirds are small, but do you know how small? At full adult size, these birds are less than four inches long, and this little guy probably isn't an adult. To get what you see here, I have cropped almost 85% of the image away; thank goodness for a 36MP camera.

If you are interested in seeing the rest of my Hummingbird shots from today you can, they are posted on my website. Two from my Presqu'ile Provincial Park trip on Monday are there too.

I actually screwed up with this shot... badly.

There was a really neat looking spider where I was shooting the Hummingbirds, so I put the macro lens on and set the camera up for macro shooting. Once that was done I put the telephoto back on the camera but forgot to set the camera back to where it was.

I got very lucky.

Unfortunately it was very quiet bird-wise, but I did get in some Hummer practice.

This is the fourth in a series of five shots taken in about a second. The first and fifth shots the bird's head is normal, the second it is slightly cocked and the third it is about 90°.

On another note, this is my first Boney!

I went out birding today for the first time in a week and discovered that the Caspian Terns have arrived in Tommy Thompson Park. I'm a day late but I am hoping that +Meg Rousher won't mind me posting this to #FlyByFriday .

Although I have gone to Marie Curtis Park a couple of times, this is my first walk along Etobicoke Creek north of Lakeshore Blvd.

I had to meet a client in the west end this morning to deliver a print so I grabbed my camera and tried Marie Curtis Park on the border of Toronto and Mississauga. This little guy decided to stop and pose for me, although he was being very smart and stayed in the deep shade where it was cool.

I haven't been online much lately; I've been really busy doing other things. Here's a Chipping Sparrow from one of my trips to Carden last week.

Here is my third photo for my ABC creative photo project. The goal of this project is to shoot one photo per week (approximately) that is of a subject I normally don't shoot and the final result has to be straight out of the camera with no post-production other that the RAW conversion.

My third photo for this project didn't quite turn out the way I wanted to, especially since I am not allowed to do any post-production work. I should have used an external light meter and not let the camera decide what the exposure would be.

The right-hand side of this shot is slightly over-exposed and there are two ways I could have fixed this while I was shooting. I could have bounced some light into the left by using an off-camera external flash or I could have used a translucent reflector or a flag to block some of the light hitting the right side of the image.

Fortunately this is the digital era and I can use photoshop to fix what I should have done when I was taking the shot.

Please let me know what you think and would love some suggestions for the letter D.

Having fun with Photoshop.

This is a composite of two images taken about a minute apart. There is a nesting box just out of frame to the left of the male and this is a mated pair. They kept flitting from one part of the fence to another but never landed close to each other, so I had to do it in post.

Unfortunately it was pretty overcast most of the day and it caused these birds to be heavily backlit.

My final post for the #GplusAnniversaryToronto  photo walk is my blog post for this week. It is a few of the things that I saw while walking about.

It was a pleasure meeting everyone from the photo walk and I hope we get to do it again soon. A special thank you to +Ron Clifford for organizing the outing.
