How do you convert images to black and white?
I usually use Nik Silver Efex Pro 2. Here's a quick overview of my workflow for an image from Clifton Gorge in Ohio.

Today was a perfect example of how the How We See It books can have an affect on someone. I was a a Family ArtsFest today at a local school, and two of the students were selling a self-published book that they co-wrote with the mother about a mermaid and a pearl necklace and how the necklace did not make her beautiful, as she was already beautiful herself. I bought the book not knowing the story, but wanted to help these two beautiful young ladies raising money for the school. After I took it home I was touched by the story and how much it had in common with the messages the Ladies and I try to convey in the How We See It books (HWSI), as does our charity the NOW Love Your Body Foundation. Because I had to go back to the school before the end of the event to pick up my son who was volunteering there, I decided to take with me a spare copy of the Second How We See It book, and give it to these inc... more »

Goodbye to Winter
I stood by the window this morning, watching new snow fall on the snowdrops by the door. The tiny, white flowers are tightly closed against the chill - waiting for a moment of warmth. They are a quiet promise that Spring will come.
Tips for Photographers:
1. When photographing white objects against a white background, overexpose slightly. All that bright white throws off your camera's meter. Check your histogram to be sure your whites are bright enough - but don't let the details blow out.
2. When photographing water droplets with a macro lens, look closely at the reflections. Change your position if necessary to make sure the reflection isn't distracting. In one shot from this morning, I noticed that the water droplet reflected the pattern of siding on my house. No good. I changed my angle and captured this shot instead.... more »

CONGRATULATIONS to +Dominique Dubied for his winning image from Erg Smer in the Photo Contest: Textures and Patterns in Nature. This photo had the WOW factor I was looking for in a winning photo for this contest. The patterns and textures in the sand in the foreground really drew me into the photo, and the sand dunes in the background with their shadows kept my attention and drew my eye all the way back to the horizon. Technically, it is a very well done and beautiful monochromatic image. It also made me stop in my tracks the moment I saw it. I love everything about this photo. https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c36k2a2g8lp4dlph2ma1nrn6u48/108417120160571178647/5855890885909108562
I would also like to congratulate the three Runner-Ups in this contest. There were so many beautiful images entered into this contest, and it was very hard to decide, but here are the other three images that re... more »

Four of these kiddos are mine - and two belong to +Jay Patel. We are doing the best we can to raise a crop of photographers. :) We did a little photo shoot over the weekend - and they had a great time trying out some of our cameras. Nick has a 1968 Yashica Mat124 twin lens. How cool is that? And Damian has my very first love - the Pentax K1000 that I purchased in college... with every last penny in my savings account.

Through The Woods
When I visit a location, I always try to give myself time to really explore the location. When we visited Rainbow Falls on The Big Island of Hawaii, I took a few shots of the waterfall, and then want to see what else I could find. I climbed the steps to the top of the falls, and then followed the path off into the woods. The path was soaked with water from intermittent downpours, so I sloshed along... letting the mud ooze over my slippers and between my toes. I loved these trees with their echoing curves that created a beautiful tunnel of greenery.
A couple of tips for photographing in the woods:
1. Forests can be full of "clutter", so getting a pleasing composition can be hard. Look for repeating patterns, and eliminate distracting elements if you can.
2. Pay close attention to your histogram. Getting the right exposure in the... more »

Album Theme: Monochromatic Photography
I've arranged my Wilderness Photography album to showcase monochromatic photography (the first 25 shots or so). Is this what comes to mind when you hear the word "monochrome"?
When I think of monochrome, I don't just think black and white. A monochromatic image is one in which I use a single color, usually in a variety of tones. I love the challenge of creating photographs that use just one color - and the finished photo usually feels very clean and peaceful. Here are a few tips for creating your own monochromatic photos.
1. Look for incredibly simple compositions. I like to choose a single object for my point of interest, and build my shot around it.
2. Look for incredibly simple backgrounds. Pay close attention to what's behind and around your subject. Can you eliminating distracting colors by... more »

Ouch! I sure got a nasty comment on this interview! Apparently, I came off as being "annoying and patronising".
That sure wasn't my intention! Ah well. I guess you can't please them all. Anyway - what do you think? Was it all "psycho babble and self promotion"?

Peek-a-Boo
These little ones absolutely loved being in front of the camera. Each time I took a shot, they'd come running over to take a look at the back of my camera. They giggled at every photograph, and they were loving the extra attention. Of course, I was loving it as much as they were. ;)
Smiles are always precious... but maybe more so when you know how hard these kids have it. They live in the slums of Nicaragua. Their families struggle every single day. Nicaragua is the poorest country in Central America, and many families are living on less than a dollar a day.
When it was time for us to leave, the children followed us down the road - waving and calling out to us. And then they headed back home for dinner... food that their families had worked hard for... but probably wouldn't be enough to fill everyone up.

We may not be leaving for Nicaragua this morning after all. We are headed to the airport in one heck of a nasty snow storm. The plows are out in force, but it's a losing battle. Wish us luck. We are going to need it.

Pay attention to ME!
Tips for making a single element stand out in your photographs. ;)
When you shoot, do you take a moment to consider the most important element in your photograph? For this shot, I wanted to get in really close - and show off the beautiful, reflective droplets clinging to the leaf. I also wanted a very clear point of interest. So, I started looking for a single element that would work well for me. This little droplet was perfect. It stands out because it is much larger than the other droplets, and because it breaks the line that runs through the lower third of the image - between the leaf and the background.
Here are a few tips for isolating a single element for impact.
1. You can blur the background to allow sharply focus foreground objects stand out. Blurring the background will also help obscure potentially distracting elements, which... more »
