Friday, more specifically, #FirstFridayArtWalk and #FigurativeArtFriday, crept up on me before I had this painting completed. I needed just 24 additional hours. I corrected the shadow, narrowed her jaw (it was too wide before), corrected her anatomy from waist up, and glazed her flesh to give it more depth. As this is an awkward painting to shoot with a camera (tall and narrow), I included a detail photo also.

The 24th Annual Rio Grande Arts & Crafts Festival is a juried show coinciding with the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. With over 1,000 balloons, the Balloon Fiesta is the largest hot-air balloon event in the world. Mass ascensions on weekend mornings fill the skies with colorful balloons of all shapes and sizes. Nearly 2 million people from all over the world visited the Balloon Fiesta last year. But balloons aren't the only sight to see during the Balloon Fiesta. On the first two weekends of October, Albuquerque also plays host to the state's largest juried arts and crafts show - The Rio Grande Arts & Crafts Festival.

Please, guys, if you share an image, include credit to the artist who created it. It's one of the best ways of supporting an artist when you can't afford to buy anything from them. It doesn't matter the kind of art - include credit.
I know it's not standard behavior on the internet now-a-days, but publicity, sharing, having our name with our work - that is how an artist's name becomes known, and how an artist goes from being starving to possibly making a living wage from their work. Reputation and renown is so important in reaching a wide enough audience to make a living, and when you share an image with no credit, that's a chance to support the artists that fuel the arts that you just missed.

Hey so I have been noticeably absent of late, not much time for painting as I have been preparing for the art in the park show tomorrow, have my own booth for the first time ever, weather my be an issue but at least I will inside a barn out of the rain. So exciting, lined up all my work yesterday and I am really pleased how all my piece look together.
The image in this post are 4" x 6" Art cards I have made up for the show, really turned out great, for those budget minded individuals, who is interested in my work but can't afford an original, if you interested let me know, I had a small number produced for the show but can have more made up.
So if you are in Mississauga tomorrow come by and visit me and my booth would love to see you and chat for a bit. Hopefully the weather holds, like I said I am in a barn so my booth should be nice and dry.

For #stilllifeartmonday here is a study of two peaches & a nectarine I did using three different techniques. The left hand one is stippled, the nectarine I did using smooth contour following strokes and the right hand peach I did in graisalle. As is typical of me I can't just do a quick study I need to have a completed painting hence the detail of the wooden block lol.

+FigurativeArtFriday for September 14, 2012 has produced an eclectic and stimulating selection of artworks in several media. I found merit in every submission, and I hope to see more of the work of each artist represented in this group.
Some standouts are:
Maude McDonald's Homage to Frida (oil) captures the look of Frida Kahlo– her environment and dress especially - that make this iconic artist instantly recognizable. Frida’s self-portraits are noteworthy for the direct gaze at the viewer. Frida stares at us defiantly, daring us to deny her physical and emotion pain, her communism, her bisexuality, her “mexicanidad.” But Maude’s Frida is different. This is my personal opinion. As an artist, I had a compelling desire to express my feelings.

I just can't seem to stay away from color. I did a small 5" x 7" copy of this painting but always felt it would look better on a big canvas so here it is 2 years later in it's beginning stages on a 36" x 30" canvas. I've kept the background colors low intensity so that the foreground will stand out with high intensity colors.

This painting was first done as a landscape which I was sitting on the fence with it. I felt it needed something extra, I tried putting in a figure but it wasn't working, I am not a figurative artist especially if I am coming at it with no reference. When I showed the landscape to +Maude McDonald she quickly drew me a nude figure of a woman walking up a hill with instructions to make it about 5 inches tall and clothing her was optional lol It worked! and was the perfect addition to this painting. THANK YOU +Maude McDonald
