Brian Buckley57,256Sharing My Sept 13 Engagers Showcase CircleHappy Saturday. Here is my latest circle of engaging plussers. Again with this post I am giving away a special prize with this share. Make sure you read the entire post to see how to qualify for the giveaway! As is my custom I am also recommending you check out +Pam Adger profile and add her if she's your cup of tea.  Pam is an amazing, articulate, kind person. Some of her posts don't suit everyone's tastes, so she doesn't like to be included in a mass circle share, but I love her and I think you should check her out.READ ON - GIVEAWAY INFORMATION TO COMEThe Engagers Showcase part means that I would love for you to share a link to one of your own recent posts in the comment stream here. That is a unique feature of this type of circle and it's a lot of fun. It also gives everyone a chance to learn a little bit about why I like to have you in my circles, and if they would like to add you to your circles. You'll need to use a public post or Google plus won't give you a link to it. There are lots of new people in this circle. This is your chance to make some great new connections. Here's the second bonus for reading this far. You have a chance to win one of our coveted "Blue Footed Boobies" tee shirts. Everyone in this circle (plus Pam) who shares a link to a post will be added into a new circle.  We will give one member of that new circle a coveted Blue Footed Boobies tee shirt as pictured in this post: http://goo.gl/2MJGE4 - in support of breast cancer research. If you don't have a public post of your own that you would like to share you can include a link to someone else's awesome post that you like.SHARING COMMENTING PLUSSINGAll the above are welcome and appreciated, but please do any of the above for your own reasons. You are in this circle already because of our interactions or because I admire what you do online and I want to recommend you to others. This is not a snowball circle. I curate like crazy and make this circle up based on interactions on all of my posts and from my go-to peeps. You can count on this croup to be awesome at engagementThere are some people who I follow that don't like to be included in a mass circle share. This is because they feel that their particular brand of googling is not everyone else's cup of tea. +Pam Adger  is one of those folks. She has a very wide variety of tastes and so if you put the effort in to read this post I'm rewarding you by recommending that you add her, too. She finds a lot of people add her only to  remove her from their circles later. I would love for you to check out her profile. Moe Tousignant6,227RPG Circle ShareI hadn't done these in some time but decided to start up in the new year. Earlier this week I shared my first circle, my A circle. What you have here is my B - RPG Gamers circle. These are all G+ users who's name they have chosen to use start with the letters B. Everyone in this circle should have something to do with RPGs in some way. They may be a designer, a writer, an editor, an artist, a publisher, a fan, an edition warrior, a blogger, a podcaster, etc. If you do grab some of these people you should take the time to say hi! The best way I've found to do this is put them into a "New People" circle, send a message out to that new circle and then split the people up into whatever circle system you choose to use.2014-01-09 22:25:56205213

Some of you have no doubt noticed, as I just did, that it's quite a lot smaller than usual. Perhaps my content was especially shit this week... or perhaps the fact that I'm getting ready to move has meant I posted less stuff. Who knows?Anyway, those of you who are reading this are probably following me, which means you probably share some interests with me, and therefore with them. So, add the #circle ! Add it now! I think this week in particular has had some great discussions, and I have these people (and, I think we can all agree, my own brilliant topics and shining discourse ^.^) to thank for that. So, thank you all! If you're reading this but aren't in the #circle , there is an easy solution - share this circle, or anything else in the coming week, or better yet contribute to the discussions which form a tiny piece of the amazing G+ experience. If you're being notified, you're in it. I am grateful for finding and fixing things. This bad photo - I could not get a good one - shows a massive crack in my bi-pap hose. (Yes, I have sleep apnea. No, I'm not the usual candidate.) I found this today. I thought I felt a rush of air two nights ago when I was fumbling around with the machine.

This explains so much. The decline in cognitive power. The slowed thinking. The near-complete loss of creativity and willpower over the past two months. Lack of posting. Increased anxieties and sleep issues. Gephyrophobia (well probably not but it's fun to type out and it probably exacerbated it). Reduction of my near-manic energy levels to below the average person's. Other things. Not everything but a lot.

Swapped that sucker out in an instant tonight. Revisiting the... more »

So I hate taking selfies. Must be something about growing up on the wrong side of the Digital Divide. Or maybe I'm just shy. Anyway this tickled my photography instincts a lot. So I took it. And I thought I'd share with you guys.

New blood test for depression. Hope for a better treatment IMO.

Identification of new RNA markers is one of the most amazing finds. I have several people in my family who suffer from depression. (Hell it spills over onto me such that sometimes even I feel like it's getting to me so that would be a neat side study.) I think that this is such a great finding, and I really like that it's so cost-effective and more available. It will also help further reduce the stigma. As if Robin Williams going wasn't enough to give us national awareness.

Two more for the doodles. Well the photo here appears to cut off the sea serpent's head. Well no matter. That's a doodle that became more than a doodle. I am no artist, however occasionally I can render something. This one really pleased me that it came out like I intended. (Getting the island in there was a bonus round.)

So thank you for your plusses, your visit and your appreciation. DO please share any of your art, doodles or work with me if you have any! Thanks.

Album continues. I had a huge spate of creativity at the end of June/beginning of July. This led to mixing up months. Both were drawn in July. Maybe it was celebrating my daughter graduating, and looking forward to her going to college, and moving to a new role and office. I dunno. I just know that there was stuff in the notebook almost every day. Thanks for viewing and I hope it entertains or pleases you. :)

Putting The Bod Back Together

Long post about runners and your base to follow. Hope you got out to move today!!

Confession: the last time I ran was Friday 9/12. Before that it was Friday, September 22 when I had to find Lake Erie. And did.

Yes I went 21 days - 3 weeks - without a run. This sucked. Friday was awesome. I hope to rescue a poem from scribbled notes. Someday. Maybe. I ran in new spaces. Then I ran again today.

On to rebuilding.

Your Base: If you are a runner, you have a base. To me this is the amount of distance you feel good about running at race pace if someone threw you out of of bed and said "Let's go!" Tomorrow. (And you didn't try to throttle them even if the cat got scared because dude! Your Base: If you are a runner, you have a base. To me this is the amount of distance you feel good about running at race pace if someone threw you out of of bed and said "Let's go!" Tomorrow. (And you didn't try to throttle them even if the cat got scared because dude! Friends don't throw friends out of bed on Sundays they send polite txt messages from your driveway while passive aggressively cursing you. I hope. If you find others to run with.)

You base is also known as your Weekend Long Run.

Rebuilding Your Base: This is today's subject. You lose adaptations after two weeks. Maybe after one. They set you back.

Not as much as you fear though.

You need to rebuild.

Every runner has a base. And every base you have has an earlier iteration. If you fall off the wagon, kick yourself to the couch, lose motivation, or just can't do it for a while you have to go back to your base. Or an earlier base.

My base this spring was 12 miles every Sunday. Well I lost that about May. So I had to go back to an earlier base today. And I did.

I set out to run 5 miles or so. I just threw on the shoes and ran down the hill after 8+ awesome hours of Sleep of the Dead.*

Thankfully I remembered to bring water.

So I started to cover miles. And more miles. While my lungs yelled. My chest felt tight for the first tenth of a mile or so till my body realized that, yes, we were running and it was not 8th grade gym class.

Somewhere in there I startled two women. Felt so bad. I try to make my feet heavier when I'm approaching. And call out a cheery greeting. And they still startle. Well what can you do? I smile and greet everyone anyway. It's easier if they're approaching you and it's not you passing their shoulder from behind.

Back to bases.

Your base sustains you. If it's been too long, you get to fall back upon an older base. Need to run 12 miles but took 3 months to move to a new city and a new life? Maybe you can run six. Remember when 10Ks were your go to race?

Gotta run 6 miles? And the most you ran is 3? Ever done a gym class for an hour? Then yes, you can do it. Imagine you're halfway through that class - but it's just starting.

Like running 3.1 miles/5Ks, and think that's pretty much grand? It is. That's more miles than your average Joe or Jane runs. Maybe you're working up to it or you only did it once? Do you remember when you ran a mile without stopping to breathe hard? I do. It's pretty fricking excellent. Do that again. By now you might be close to the 2 mile marker. Do it One More Time. And you're home free.

My legs hurt. But not as much as I would have thought. They brought me up the hill! Later I found out it was a) 7 miles not 6, b) the route was shaped like a gun and c) I had more of my base than I thought.

Hopefully your movements were easier and grander today!

*V. 1
May I refer you to a prior blog post wherein I mention sleep apnea? And finally repairing a leaking hose? To put a fine point upon it, I was not my self for a good month if not two.

*V. 2
Sleep of the Dead = fully functioning bi-pap for the first time in two months, a bit of a head cold, and heading home early from a couple social obligations (dang I am a lousy friend) into 3 hours of rain-soaked roads. Then just having the brains to sleep instead of going on the internet. For like 10 hours.

Swapped that sucker out in an instant tonight. Revisiting the idea that maybe I should get the tonsil/uvula surgery in the future. Dammit I would like to be able to sleep on my stomach again. It's been 18 years or so.

Moral of this story?

Check your durable medical equipment. Make it a habit. Don't just expect it to work.

And be grateful for it. It lets me function. I know I wrote about it before. Just think though of indispensable things in your life. (My phone ain't it.) And how much they are built on modern science and technology and learning. We live in a grand age in many ways.

Now if we can just fix the planet and our species...

15/58 50 Days of 50 Pushups

How are yours going?

Activation rounds. Let's talk about that. Did 10 pushups quick. Walked away, came back under a minute later. Hammered out another 55. Net 65 for the day.

Except the last 10 were hard. Memo to self. The damn pushups would be easier at 6 PM not 9:54 PM and before not after dinner and a martini.

14/50 Fifty Days of Fifty Push-ups

Day 14. Changed the hand position. Slightly inside the shoulders. Did the activation round. A gift from my trainer Mike that I finally figured out. How's it go?

15 pushups: fast, hard; down to elbows
rest 1 minute
change your hand position - we're two weeks in aren't we?
54 as hard and fast as you can

It might start to suck around 36. You can do it.

I read 18 out of 20 stories in my advanced copy so far. And this is really, really good. If you have +Uri Kurlianchik circled, he's the author. It all feels real, except it's not. It's edgy different desert modern fantasy. "The Toys Read the Torah at Night' creeped me the heck out. I believed I was there so many times - even though it is fantasy. As a Biblical scholar - yes, I was tutored by Jesuits and wrote a paper on different translations of the Bible* - "The Scroll of Noah" gave me several chuckles. There is a dry wit, a studied sarcasm and a faint weariness of life in a fast-paced land that infuses all these tales with sharpness. I do recommend it. Hardcover edition coming soon. I believe it's available through iTunes also.

*Technically this should be "recovering Biblical scholar" since I am agnostic these days.

228/365 Monday August 25, 2014

Two days ago I was so thankful that the worst was over. Simplicity was there before me in this tiny, beautiful acorn. It signaled what I knew already - that fall is about to begin.

See beginning at 12:30 AM Monday morning, there was a series of issues in the house that you can't make up. (I am glad that they happened now though and not in the middle of the winter.)

Septic clogged, putting an inch of water in the basement.
Furnace stopped working. Needed a cleaning.
Water softener sprang a leak.
Bill spent a lot of the day with his arms wrapped around a wet vac or hanging onto its hose attachment.

Really, when it ended and I could walk the dog knowing that everything was (mostly) dealt with I was ready for happening across this small green seed.

227/365 Sunday August 24, 2014*

I was thankful for sleeping with no alarm clock, and a cat to greet me. She crawled up onto the couch to sit on top of my chest when I beckoned. (First time. Yay.) I know she was missing my daughter. Wondering more what happened to the girl that gave her all that love and affection for the past two years.

So I did my best. She's still looking a tad startled isn't she? Well it was nice to spend some lazy moments with the cat.

Four days ago I was awestruck, humbled and delighted to have gone off the beaten path. To find windmills. I had not lance in the car. No donkey or manservant. No soundtrack to Man of La Mancha (though perhaps I should have).

Serendipity. Majesty. Presence. Those were a few adjectives that came to mind when I wandered into a high valley full of these windmills. I counted 25. Turning silently and deftly above barns and farmhouses that no doubt had origins in buildings put up 200 years ago or more.

There was another ridge beyond this one. And yet a third beyond that. I lost count. I am pretty sure there are 75 because this is the High Sheldon Wind Farm. Or so I believe if the Internet is correct on this point.

225/365 Friday August 22, 2014

Five days ago I was incredibly grateful that my daughter chose a beautiful campus at a good school in a town that feels like it was 30 years ago. People are nice. Friendly. So very polite. It was a treat. I made a vow to behave like the drivers do there back in Connecticut, even though everyone here will think I'm addled.

The staff impressed me at orientation. The President, all the department heads, and everyone else who seemed important turned out. They had good information. They answered questions. They also were just down to earth and real.

Late that afternoon after I gave her a hug - and thought that was goodbye but it wasn't - I even got a run in. Found Lake Erie. What a beautiful area. See for yourself. Here's a photo.

Six days ago I was thankful to reach Fredonia New York with my daughter intact, no troubles. We left at 6:11 AM. Arrived around 1:40 PM. (I love the fact that Justine is efficient at rest stops by the way.)

Here she is setting up her dorm room. Sometimes when she moves it's almost like she's dancing. Well she is a triple threat after all - singer, dancer and actor.

To let her set it up we had to haul her stuff up to the third floor. I swear that girl packs rocks in her suitcase. Except I didn't hear any rattle. Well I digress. The mini fridge was the most fun since it's a big, modestly heavy cube with no handles.

It was a good workout getting her stuff up. And we were in ahead of the big move in day. And she had pretty much everything. Except for half a dozen or so items that we would acquire the next day.... more »

And I am not sure that I still quite comprehend that my little girl is all grown up. Three months shy of 18 years after she first arrived, she's off at college. Wow. I am so proud of her.

One week ago I was so thankful that the mini-fridge defrosted. See I was loading up the car. For seven and a half hours westbound into New York State to deliver the One and Only Daughter to college. We had gone back and forth all week on taking the van (which suck gas like an alcoholic at a keg of free beer) or my Vibe, which is smaller, more gas efficient, and standard.

(Justine can't drive standard by the way. I didn't mind doing all the driving. You don't get too many of these chances once they grow up.)

But I wanted clear sight lines. And I had agreed to give loan her my beloved mini fridge. After all, without her piles of vegetarian stuff in the usual fridge there might be room. It all had to go in. And went in it did after a thorough cleaning. I was so pleased that it all packed up nicely and completely and I could... more »

Leaving for vacation with everything wrapped up and under control?? Priceless. Thank you for those opportunities new role*.

May I tell you how amazing it is to wrap up one's work, close up shop, get all the necessaries together, and walk out the door basically on time??

I did.

To my own amazement.

A glass of wine and some sushi later, looking out own traffic seeing all that I had not seen before in Hartford?? Added to it. I must also thank happy hour pricing and friends who do not show up who give me time to finish doodles. Yes, it was honestly a pleasant hour.

Had a pile of purple-skinned peppers on hand. Thankful for acquiring them the day before. Enlisted J's help cutting them. How many more of those Dad & Daughter meals would there be?

Who knows?

They were part of the whole plan. Which turned into quesadillas. Cheese, tortillas, coconut oil and other fillings.

They came out okay. We had a little argument. These things happen. That's when I knew it was real. Going off to college. Leaving. Yep. :)

Thankful for a final Farmer's Market. Read on?

I was so pleased that the farmers were there at the local Farmer's Market. I mean, 10 AM Justine and I roll out the house - okay maybe 10:11 or so - and blast the five miles down the hill to park. And come away with all sorts of amazing stuff for the house. Beans, peaches, potatoes, tomatoes, cheese, and so much more.

We've been going down that hill to that market since the year it opened. Which I think was 2009. The local Patch contradicts me - says it was 2006 - however I'm pretty sure that the year she and her friend Ali wore blue makeup to the market was 2009. Could be wrong. No worries. The same folks are there all the time. Produce is so good.

Will have to go next summer. Wonder if I can drag either of the boys with me?

219/365* August 16, 2014

A week ago last Saturday I got the rear tires on the Vibe replaced. Thankfully. When you are less than 5 days from (potentially) driving your daughter to college on a set of wheels, you worry about these things. Needlessly.

By no coincidence at all, I had breakfast with a friend. And shot the fecal matter for a good couple hours. Got the car back. Went home. Did lotsa stuff.

Rounded out the day by checking a drink recipe a friend sent. See +Søren Thustrup ! (Or did I already send this?)

The only way one can sit back and enjoy complexity like The Global is when you think you've taken care of necessities.

This approximates the mental state of 48 year old men after the septic blows at 12:30 AM, you wet vac 12 loads up from your basement, the furnace goes right when the septic gets fixed, you find more water seeping (load 13) and the furnace guy points out that your water softener is leaking.

I did, at least, get a shower and that is one very right thing with the world.

Everyone stores food in it.

216/365 - Wednesday August 13, 2014

The day started off so wet. I was thankful for the bright sunlight warming the street after I reached the top of the hill.

I mean, that morning it poured buckets in Hartford and all over central and northern Connecticut. We needed it. It was still a wet hike from the bus stop to work. (This was one of those days where I took the bus instead of driving.) At least I had figured out that I could leave one car at the bus stop for the house to retrieve later so I didn't have to stroll down the hill in the wet.

And that evening I strolled up the hill in glorious, warm sunshine. On the last bus out of Hartford. Which was the nice coach bus. Let me tell you about a bizarre story. The driver was excellent.

Someone darted in front of her bus to cross the street - through traffic - as she was starting forward. This is one of the big coach buses. She had marvelous reflexes. That young man was damn lucky. The other passengers and I actually conversed! (Conversation doesn't happen on the Last Bus From Hartford. You sigh and retreat into your private world for a while.) Talked about what a dumbass he was.

Part of me admired the chutzpah. The rest of me hopes he figured out the mistake and didn't do it again.

Good driver. Good ride home. Lovely walk up the hill and home.

Yes, I can confirm that my daughter has a remarkable gift for comedy. It's always a proud moment when you realize that she's audible and has great delivery too. Thank you Greater Hartford Academy of Arts for the training.

*[SPOILERS]This is an odd play for Shakespeare the way it ends. My contention is that he thought he might write a sequel. There's the interesting dovetail of how the various oaths get broken for love which starts it all off. So the whole "we must spend a year apart" thing makes me wonder if the idea is she sends him off in hopes that he'll come right back anyway??___

Yesterday I was grateful for serendipity, sculpture and sound. I can't tell you about the serendipity. I can tell you about the sound. And the sculpture.

Hartford Stage is undergoing renovation. So this year's Breakdancing Shakespeare was performed at St. Joseph's college theater. A really lovely place. Completely overshadowed by a terrific cast with an amazing director, choreographer and costumer and unseen behind the scenes techies and the volunteers.

Yeah, my daughter Justine was in the show. I found this sculpture on the campus wandering before it. It's a lovely piece, inspired by Moorish art I think. And I mean no disrespect to the artist, but it looks like a dog about to sniff and wag its tail!

Basically, Monday night I was (again) on my own for dinner. A vision of things to come. The day had not gone well, although it hadn't gone terribly so that was a thing. The solid 8 hours of sleep accomplished had truly helped that morning.

Ignoring a small pile of dishes and mail to sort, I proceeded to make dinner. Onions. Onions and mushrooms. A huge, fresh white onion from the farmer's market. Spray the cast iron down with olive oil. Start it caramelizing. Get the mushrooms and dump those in later. More olive oil. (All throughout the process really.) Flavoring. Heheheh secret spices. While that last bit cooked up, I raided the leftovers for the umpteenth time and found chicken! Cold chicken. Cold chicken, onions and mushrooms.

Chilled down the martini glass and made a really good one with the ice chips floating in it and the vermouth soaked olives. Reflected that all things considered, the following night I would get to see another play. Robin Williams' death announcement in the middle of it seemed almost like a passing of the torch. Not a good one, but still.

And that I really, really like my cast iron cookware. And I'm really glad I like food and can provide it.

Farmer's Market Haul!

Yesterday's. Hope you enjoy. Lots of color. Flavors were fantastic and I wish you could have all dropped round to share.

214/365 - Sunday August 10, 2014

Yesterday I was really grateful for technology. On so many levels. Technology in the phone to provide information, connect me to family and friends, and to function as a better rooster*. Technology protecting the phone so it won't break. Since, it's fragile. Made of glass.

And yet a marvel. Look at what your phone can do when you touch it. Have you ever wondered? It is truly amazing. In so short a time so many have become dependent upon it. A phone is like a personalized, digital attendant of great skill.

Mine also takes photos. That may be what I like. I have to post a few from yesterday!

*I use the phone as an alarm.

And yet I have two more for this one! :)

Hm. Well notice that there are lines missing in the one labeled "bridges". "Muzzle" was also intended to resemble something totally different but sometimes things work out for a reason.

Yesterday I was grateful for an ettin screaming "Pony!" while trapped in a hole. Yes, this can only happen in a fantasy game - a two headed giant gets tricked by a paladin into thinking lunch awaits. And they avoid sure-fire disaster. Only to awaken the ghost of the Laird of the Cruach (castle)!

It was a short series of games. Took place over three weeks. I was asked to step in when a friend of my daughter's couldn't finish DMing since he was going to South Africa. What an awesome chance. Justine and four of her friends? Playing D&D? You can't make up what seeing wonder awakening on people's faces is like:

 "I can do that?"
"Yes."
"Cool!"

There were so many moments like that. It is not possible to visit the past again. It is possible to see a moment that has passed in your life arrive to be new to someone in yours though. That's a new kind of magic that I never knew that I would experience as an adult.

Except now I do. I look forward to more. And thanks for the opportunity young people.

212/365 - Friday August 8, 2014

Two days ago I was thankful for time and nostalgia.*

This past Friday I got through the week. Got things moved ahead closer to where I want to be (always working a week in advance). Headed home. Mmm. Leftovers.

Puttering began. I gathered minis and poked into boxes in search of props for the D&D finale to follow the next morning. There in the Gaming Cabinet of Curiosities, I happened across something from the past. This map. Made around 1999 or so. This was a sequel to a campaign map I made around 1983. Indeed, in this world, it was a 1000 years after that campaign. When the world was really, really different. And the same.

As a kid, I loved maps. They sung songs of adventure. I bought fantasy novels because of the maps. Then became quizzical when the novel didn't get to all of the amazing sounding places shown. Or sometimes... more »

As a kid, I loved maps. They sung songs of adventure. I bought fantasy novels because of the maps. Then became quizzical when the novel didn't get to all of the amazing sounding places shown. Or sometimes did - in a sequel. Real world maps, both new and old, could be things of beauty or marvelous tools. Sometimes a trap - as an adjuster using an atlas to get around before smart phones I once tried to take a short cut that ended in a cul-de-sac. The map was right - for 20 years before.

As an adult, I love maps even more. I recommend Ken Jennings _ Maphead_ by the way. Terrific book. So running across this gave me pause. I stole a lot of Sindarin words and made new ones for this. I am not a medieval cartographer. But I am glad I have this. It reminds me of where I was and where I'm going.

211/365 - Thursday August 7, 2014

A walk up the hill home after work. Under blue skies. What more can a man be thankful for than to have a place to go? Sure the kids are mostly out and the ones happy to see me are the cat and dog. That's not a bad thing at all. It's a good thing. I belong somewhere.

You can't make it out in this photo - I wish my phone had a higher zoom - however there's a tiny little rock cairn out in the middle of this river. Yep. A river rock stands tall in the midst of the stream. Five smaller rocks stand high on top of it. Just a wonderful little stack of stones there in the stream near the island.

Someone took the time to balance and build it. Art can be grand or primal, sublime or simple. And just a little pile of stones out where no natural force could place them? Brought a huge smile to my face.

210/365 - Wednesday August 6, 2014

That day I was thankful for recovery from illness and for Chinese food. The stomach bug had passed. I started to feel ravenous. The college-bound youth were all "Can you run D&D??" I said OK, but we'd have to order out. I wasn't up for cooking a meal and DMing.

They showed up! It amazes me how much each one of them has let some little excited utterance slip at times about how they enjoy the game. I feel like I have a window onto the past when I was a youth, looking at my friends and we were all gaming. The difference? As an adult, a man who is at least seeking wisdom these days, and as a parent, I am in charge of the game not struggling to be in control of the game. The pleasure of seeing them discover these moments for the first time can be stolen from the observations as they head into these fantastic worlds.

Not to mention when they encounter the unexplained. Here the session ended: The two in the kitchen had thrown a rock down a hole next to the hearth. And something threw it back! In the other room, the wizard was just about to run up and with all her might throw the bard off the Iron Throne to sit on it. It went crashing down! There was a deep inarticulate noise.

The question my brilliant daughter asked, which turned into a worry (in character) was "Do we hear the throne crash?" "Yes." "Oh crap, it means these areas are connected."

Nearing the last. I penned the triangular-ish one at a volunteer session for the Travelers Championship. Technically, I did most of it before the young lady started talking and then finished the rest after. I wanted to be polite and take notes on what new items she had. The bottle one? I still suck at real life object rendering. But I can get a cartoony sense of it. That happened at a fine graduation party. In between chess games.

Am I just channeling The New Yorker?* One of these doodles really resembles something you might see in their pages. Should I get a subscription at this advance age? Nahh. I can just go borrow my Dad's. I digress. The "Charlie Brown" doodle turned into faces at the very, very last moment. And yet, I think it takes it from crap to craptastic! Or at least, worth sharing with many dear friends and kind viewers. Thank you!

*Around two years ago when I still went to a personal therapist, she chuckled outright when she asked about one of my Moleskines and I said "Oh. That's just my personal New Yorker."

209/365 Tuesday August 5, 2014

It was hard to find gratitude for much of anything. Stomach viruses can do that to you. Yet, if you look, you'll realize it's there. So yesterday I was really grateful for long naps after a good book. (Rarely do I have or make time for a good book.)

The day began at 1 AM or so with the "call to arms". Afterward I emailed work. It was easy enough to tell I wasn't coming in. Then slept. Did some work anyway late morning. (If one wants to keep one's job it's best to keep matters moving eh?) Went back to bed. Woke up a while later on and read the book.

It was a good novel. An excellent alternate history book. I was able to stay awake and focused throughout it which surprised me greatly. Perhaps because I was engaged and I didn't have to move? Well no matter. I love a good book. And so rarely do I nap that when I... more »

Here's hoping there's more time for good books in my future.

208/365 - Monday August 4, 2014

I was thankful for stepping outside my comfort zone, exploring a little, and considering options. Sometimes we have no choice and other times we have choices. I'd like to think I have some choices.

Either way I stepped out of work Monday, turned left instead of right, and strode to the end of the road where no one went. It wasn't far. I went just over the end. Up across the railroad tracks. And stopped.

There were railroad tracks. Buildings. Signs. Containers. Trucks. Things I did not know where there. Mind you, it's not a world that I find interesting right now. Not a place where I could likely exist for long. I still wanted to walk the tracks. I know where they go - north and south and what is both north and south since I've seen both sets of tracks - and yet I truly wanted to go.

It's not the right set of railroad tracks. However, it was neat to find this little hidden spot. Also check out the light on the sign. That was a neat thing.
