Brian Buckley55,635Sharing My Aug 16 Engagers Showcase CircleHappy Saturday. Here is my latest circle of engaging plussers. I am giving away a special prize with this share. Make sure you read the entire post to see how to qualify for the giveaway! There is a very special person who I follow that doesn't like to be included in a mass circle share. This is because she doesn't think her taste is everyone else's cup of tea. She's  +Pam Adger and she is wicked awesome.  I'm recommending that you add her, but she is not in the circle. You'll have to follow her tag to her profile and add her manually . If her tastes aren't for you, then don't add her.READ ON - GIVEAWAY INFORMATION TO COMEThe Engagers Showcase part means that I would love for you to share a link to one of your own recent posts in the comment stream here. That is a unique feature of this type of circle and it's a lot of fun. It also gives everyone a chance to learn a little bit about why I like to have you in my circles, and if they would like to add you to your circles. You'll need to use a public post or Google plus won't give you a link to it. There are lots of new people in this circle. This is your chance to make some great new connections. It's also your chance to win one of our coveted "Blue Footed Boobies" tee shirts. Everyone in this circle (plus Pam) who shares a link to a post will be added into a new circle. We will give one member of that new circle a tee shirt as pictured in this post: http://goo.gl/2MJGE4If you don't have a public post of your own that you would like to share you can include a link to someone else's awesome post that you like.SHARING COMMENTING PLUSSINGAll the above are welcome and appreciated, but please do any of the above for your own reasons. You are in this circle already because of our interactions or because I admire what you do online and I want to recommend you to others. This is not a snowball circle. You don't get in or out by the same criteria as most circles. Thanks again everyone. Enjoy and thank you for your engagement Good luck with the giveaway :) #circleshare   #engagersshowcasecircle   #engagerscircle  2014-08-16 16:24:3236322469150CC G+

I curate like crazy and make this circle up based on interactions on all of my posts and from my go-to peeps. You can count on this croup to be awesome at engagementThere are some people who I follow that don't like to be included in a mass circle share. This is because they feel that their particular brand of googling is not everyone else's cup of tea. +Pam Adger  is one of those folks. She finds a lot of people add her only to  remove her from their circles later. I would love for you to check out her profile. Moe Tousignant6,227RPG Circle ShareI hadn't done these in some time but decided to start up in the new year. Earlier this week I shared my first circle, my A circle. What you have here is my B - RPG Gamers circle. These are all G+ users who's name they have chosen to use start with the letters B. Everyone in this circle should have something to do with RPGs in some way. They may be a designer, a writer, an editor, an artist, a publisher, a fan, an edition warrior, a blogger, a podcaster, etc. If you do grab some of these people you should take the time to say hi! The best way I've found to do this is put them into a "New People" circle, send a message out to that new circle and then split the people up into whatever circle system you choose to use.2014-01-09 22:25:56205213CC G+

Gabriel Fitzpatrick5,407Time for #followfriday ! This #circleshare represents everyone who has replied to or shared my posts since last #followfriday . Some of you have no doubt noticed, as I just did, that it's quite a lot smaller than usual. Perhaps my content was especially shit this week... or perhaps the fact that I'm getting ready to move has meant I posted less stuff. 193/365 - Thursday July 17, 2014

A little over a week ago Thursday I was thankful that I had good pots and pans. This is one of my set of Flint pans. I got these from my grandparent's attic. My folks had given them this set of five for a wedding anniversary. My depression era grandparents had, true to form, dutifully put them in the attic in their waxed paper wrappings against a day when their already working pots and pans stopped. They never got around to unwrapping them. (Which is a side point to this story, but interesting nonetheless no?)

Anyway, this is the biggest pot (a small vat really). In it I made my mother's spaghetti sauce recipe. Minus the "chunks" aka the diced tomatoes which my family object to. (Note that they will still eat tomatoes diced up for salad. Go figure!) I loved making sauce. In anticipation of the Danish guests coming soon. Rarely does my... more »

Digital fingerprinting and you. Neat stuff, kinda scary how it's used. The White House website is apparently still using it. Hat tip to +Liza Persson for the original article, which led me to the EFF site.

218/365 - Friday August 15, 2014

I was so happy and thankful for a laugh. Friday. If you make it to Friday it's going to be a good weekend. And I made it. And started my work for next week. That's such a good feeling.

So this sign is in the break room. There's a refrigerator.

Everyone stores food in it.

Is it alive?

We interrupt your usual ramblings to bring you a movie*. In which I take part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. (And I am donating. Cake and eat it too.)

Yet I am still grateful. Eternally grateful for modern medicine. Science. The culling of fiction out of fact. The search for answers. Answers that will someday bring a cure. For ALS. For other horrible diseases.

I have already tagged people. However, I can certainly tag some more if need be??

Thanks for putting me up to this Janet.

216/365 - Wednesday August 13, 2014

The day started off so wet. I was thankful for the bright sunlight warming the street after I reached the top of the hill.

I mean, that morning it poured buckets in Hartford and all over central and northern Connecticut. We needed it. It was still a wet hike from the bus stop to work. (This was one of those days where I took the bus instead of driving.) At least I had figured out that I could leave one car at the bus stop for the house to retrieve later so I didn't have to stroll down the hill in the wet.

And that evening I strolled up the hill in glorious, warm sunshine. On the last bus out of Hartford. Which was the nice coach bus. Let me tell you about a bizarre story. The driver was excellent.

Why?

Why?

Someone darted in front of her bus to cross the street - through traffic - as she was starting forward. This is one of the big coach buses. She had marvelous reflexes. That young man was damn lucky. The other passengers and I actually conversed! (Conversation doesn't happen on the Last Bus From Hartford. You sigh and retreat into your private world for a while.) Talked about what a dumbass he was.

Part of me admired the chutzpah. The rest of me hopes he figured out the mistake and didn't do it again.

Good driver. Good ride home. Lovely walk up the hill and home.

215/365 - Tuesday August 12, 2014

This past Tuesday I was grateful for statues, busses and Shakespeare plays. This art on the campus of St. Joseph's in West Hartford CT has some excellent Moorish influences. And yet it looks like a dog about to wag it's tail!

I had taken the bus there - after a serendipitous moment after work - to see my daughter's final local show. Breakdancing Shakespeare! "Love's Labour's Lost".* What a great production. Some amazing dance moves, and it makes Shakespeare approachable for so many who probably wouldn't otherwise want to see it.

Yes, I can confirm that my daughter has a remarkable gift for comedy. It's always a proud moment when you realize that she's audible and has great delivery too. Thank you Greater Hartford Academy of Arts for the training.

*[SPOILERS]This is an odd play for Shakespeare the way it ends. My contention is that he thought he might write a sequel. There's the interesting dovetail of how the various oaths get broken for love which starts it all off. So the whole "we must spend a year apart" thing makes me wonder if the idea is she sends him off in hopes that he'll come right back anyway??___

216/365 - Tuesday August 12, 2014

Yesterday I was grateful for serendipity, sculpture and sound. I can't tell you about the serendipity. I can tell you about the sound. And the sculpture.

Hartford Stage is undergoing renovation. So this year's Breakdancing Shakespeare was performed at St. Joseph's college theater. A really lovely place. Completely overshadowed by a terrific cast with an amazing director, choreographer and costumer and unseen behind the scenes techies and the volunteers.

Yeah, my daughter Justine was in the show. I found this sculpture on the campus wandering before it. It's a lovely piece, inspired by Moorish art I think. And I mean no disrespect to the artist, but it looks like a dog about to sniff and wag its tail!

215/365 - Monday August 11, 2014

Monday I was grateful for cast iron, onions and mushrooms. Yeah, I coulda done a Mystery Monday thing with this. Too busy. Missed that opportunity.

Basically, Monday night I was (again) on my own for dinner. A vision of things to come. The day had not gone well, although it hadn't gone terribly so that was a thing. The solid 8 hours of sleep accomplished had truly helped that morning.

Ignoring a small pile of dishes and mail to sort, I proceeded to make dinner. Onions. Onions and mushrooms. A huge, fresh white onion from the farmer's market. Spray the cast iron down with olive oil. Start it caramelizing. Get the mushrooms and dump those in later. More olive oil. (All throughout the process really.) Flavoring. Heheheh secret spices. As it rendered down almost to the last, I popped in a touch of dry sherry.

While that last bit cooked up, I raided the leftovers for the umpteenth time and found chicken! Cold chicken. Cold chicken, onions and mushrooms.

Chilled down the martini glass and made a really good one with the ice chips floating in it and the vermouth soaked olives. Reflected that all things considered, the following night I would get to see another play. Robin Williams' death announcement in the middle of it seemed almost like a passing of the torch. Not a good one, but still.

And that I really, really like my cast iron cookware. And I'm really glad I like food and can provide it.

214/365 - Sunday August 10, 2014

Yesterday I was really grateful for technology. On so many levels. Technology in the phone to provide information, connect me to family and friends, and to function as a better rooster*. Technology protecting the phone so it won't break. Since, it's fragile. Made of glass.

And yet a marvel. Look at what your phone can do when you touch it. Have you ever wondered? It is truly amazing. In so short a time so many have become dependent upon it. A phone is like a personalized, digital attendant of great skill.

Mine also takes photos. That may be what I like. I have to post a few from yesterday!

*I use the phone as an alarm.

And yet I have two more for this one! :)

Hm. Well notice that there are lines missing in the one labeled "bridges". "Muzzle" was also intended to resemble something totally different but sometimes things work out for a reason.

Yesterday I was grateful for an ettin screaming "Pony!" while trapped in a hole. Yes, this can only happen in a fantasy game - a two headed giant gets tricked by a paladin into thinking lunch awaits. And they avoid sure-fire disaster. Only to awaken the ghost of the Laird of the Cruach (castle)!

It was a short series of games. Took place over three weeks. I was asked to step in when a friend of my daughter's couldn't finish DMing since he was going to South Africa. What an awesome chance. There were so many moments like that. It is not possible to visit the past again. It is possible to see a moment that has passed in your life arrive to be new to someone in yours though. That's a new kind of magic that I never knew that I would experience as an adult.

Except now I do. I look forward to more. And thanks for the opportunity young people.

212/365 - Friday August 8, 2014

Two days ago I was thankful for time and nostalgia.*

This past Friday I got through the week. Got things moved ahead closer to where I want to be (always working a week in advance). Headed home. Mmm. Leftovers.

Puttering began. I gathered minis and poked into boxes in search of props for the D&D finale to follow the next morning. There in the Gaming Cabinet of Curiosities, I happened across something from the past. This map. Made around 1999 or so. This was a sequel to a campaign map I made around 1983. Indeed, in this world, it was a 1000 years after that campaign. When the world was really, really different. And the same.

As a kid, I loved maps. They sung songs of adventure. I bought fantasy novels because of the maps. Then became quizzical when the novel didn't get to all of the amazing sounding places shown. Or sometimes... more »

As a kid, I loved maps. They sung songs of adventure. I bought fantasy novels because of the maps. Then became quizzical when the novel didn't get to all of the amazing sounding places shown. Or sometimes did - in a sequel. Real world maps, both new and old, could be things of beauty or marvelous tools. Sometimes a trap - as an adjuster using an atlas to get around before smart phones I once tried to take a short cut that ended in a cul-de-sac. The map was right - for 20 years before.

As an adult, I love maps even more. I recommend Ken Jennings _ Maphead_ by the way. Terrific book. So running across this gave me pause. I stole a lot of Sindarin words and made new ones for this. I am not a medieval cartographer. But I am glad I have this. It reminds me of where I was and where I'm going.

211/365 - Thursday August 7, 2014

A walk up the hill home after work. Under blue skies. What more can a man be thankful for than to have a place to go? Sure the kids are mostly out and the ones happy to see me are the cat and dog. That's not a bad thing at all. It's a good thing. I belong somewhere.

You can't make it out in this photo - I wish my phone had a higher zoom - however there's a tiny little rock cairn out in the middle of this river. Yep. A river rock stands tall in the midst of the stream. Five smaller rocks stand high on top of it. Just a wonderful little stack of stones there in the stream near the island.

Someone took the time to balance and build it. Art can be grand or primal, sublime or simple. And just a little pile of stones out where no natural force could place them? Brought a huge smile to my face.

210/365 - Wednesday August 6, 2014

That day I was thankful for recovery from illness and for Chinese food. The stomach bug had passed. I started to feel ravenous. The college-bound youth were all "Can you run D&D??" I said OK, but we'd have to order out. I wasn't up for cooking a meal and DMing.

They showed up! It amazes me how much each one of them has let some little excited utterance slip at times about how they enjoy the game. I feel like I have a window onto the past when I was a youth, looking at my friends and we were all gaming. The difference? As an adult, a man who is at least seeking wisdom these days, and as a parent, I am in charge of the game not struggling to be in control of the game. The pleasure of seeing them discover these moments for the first time can be stolen from the observations as they head into these fantastic worlds.

Not to mention when they encounter the unexplained. Here the session ended: The two in the kitchen had thrown a rock down a hole next to the hearth. And something threw it back! In the other room, the wizard was just about to run up and with all her might throw the bard off the Iron Throne to sit on it. It went crashing down! There was a deep inarticulate noise.

The question my brilliant daughter asked, which turned into a worry (in character) was "Do we hear the throne crash?" "Yes." "Oh crap, it means these areas are connected."

Nearing the last. I penned the triangular-ish one at a volunteer session for the Travelers Championship. Technically, I did most of it before the young lady started talking and then finished the rest after. I wanted to be polite and take notes on what new items she had. The bottle one? I still suck at real life object rendering. But I can get a cartoony sense of it. That happened at a fine graduation party. In between chess games.

Am I just channeling The New Yorker?* One of these doodles really resembles something you might see in their pages. Should I get a subscription at this advance age? Nahh. I can just go borrow my Dad's. I digress. The "Charlie Brown" doodle turned into faces at the very, very last moment. And yet, I think it takes it from crap to craptastic! Or at least, worth sharing with many dear friends and kind viewers. Thank you!

*Around two years ago when I still went to a personal therapist, she chuckled outright when she asked about one of my Moleskines and I said "Oh. That's just my personal New Yorker."

It was hard to find gratitude for much of anything. Stomach viruses can do that to you. Yet, if you look, you'll realize it's there. So yesterday I was really grateful for long naps after a good book. (Rarely do I have or make time for a good book.)

The day began at 1 AM or so with the "call to arms". Afterward I emailed work. It was easy enough to tell I wasn't coming in. Then slept. Did some work anyway late morning. (If one wants to keep one's job it's best to keep matters moving eh?) Went back to bed. Woke up a while later on and read the book.

It was a good novel. An excellent alternate history book. I was able to stay awake and focused throughout it which surprised me greatly. Perhaps because I was engaged and I didn't have to move? Well no matter. I love a good book. And so rarely do I nap that when I... more »

Here's hoping there's more time for good books in my future.

208/365 - Monday August 4, 2014

I was thankful for stepping outside my comfort zone, exploring a little, and considering options. Sometimes we have no choice and other times we have choices. I'd like to think I have some choices.

Either way I stepped out of work Monday, turned left instead of right, and strode to the end of the road where no one went. It wasn't far. I went just over the end. Up across the railroad tracks. And stopped.

There were railroad tracks. Buildings. Signs. Containers. Trucks. Things I did not know where there. Mind you, it's not a world that I find interesting right now. Not a place where I could likely exist for long. I still wanted to walk the tracks. I know where they go - north and south and what is both north and south since I've seen both sets of tracks - and yet I truly wanted to go.

It's not the right set of railroad tracks. However, it was neat to find this little hidden spot. Also check out the light on the sign. That was a neat thing.

207/365 - Sunday August 3, 2014

These are so not my life but I couldn't stop laughing. It's like a sitcom plot isn't it?

Sunday I was most thankful for an alternative to a game. Some of the young people could not show for the D&D game. (Yes, this summer, I have had the distinct pleasure of assisting a game for my daughter and her friends.) So board games were proposed for those who could. It rapidly - expectedly? - turned into Cards Against Humanity when a bonus round of four more young folks arrived.

Once again I'm pleased to get a certain accolade. The ones that knew me were all like "Mr. Collins you're going to play right?" The others were looking like "Huh?". Out comes "It's okay, he's chill." You really can't ask for more than that sometimes.

206/365 - Saturday August 2, 2014

This past Saturday, I was grateful for this curlicue of red vine and green leaf because it meant I had walked most of the way around the loop I live on - with the dog - and a discovery.

Roscoe of the 19 Toes is getting older but he still needs his exercise. So much has been going on that I know that I have neglected him at times the past few years. He's all too happy when I can haul him out for a nice long stroll. There was this living doodle dangling in the midst of the street. It hung there as he blithely walked under it to sniff something. Dogs, naturally, have an olfactory agenda that is different to that of humans. It put me in mind of a week before when I was anticipating the arrival of friends from overseas that night - and then how amazingly nice and helpful they were.

Dogs, naturally, have an olfactory agenda that is different to that of humans. It put me in mind of a week before when I was anticipating the arrival of friends from overseas that night - and then how amazingly nice and helpful they were.

Now, what about the discovery if you've been entertained enough to read this far? Ah well I was so excited I shot an email off to my Dad about elms on the street.

Elms?

Yes. A little backstory now. Dad had spotted a living American Elm in my front yard. A sapling. We had talked about whether it would be immune to the Dutch Elm Disease. Neither of us knew. But I figured I'd try to give it a go. I loved the elms on our street as a kid in Sandwich, Mass. This was a couple weeks ago. Then I found more elm saplings all over my front yard! About a week after the initial find. Which was enough of a discovery.

However, my eyes truly opened wide walking Roscoe as I started to look and peer everywhere in the foliage on the loop. Elms everywhere. Hiding in the shadows of maples, curled under the protective embrace of oaks like a lover or a child, and slowly fighting upward against the thick canopy of green everywhere.

Had I not noticed all these years? Where were my thoughts? (Clearly elsewhere.) Elms. All over the street.

I have hope that someday tall trees will grace the streets of American towns again, here and there.

A couple more to add to this album. The word play doodle I found fun to try to render. Forgetting, of course, to try to space it clearly across the page. Well that's why these are doodles and not artist's roughs right? The other one took some time. It was an exercise in visual geometry.

Thank you for viewing. I appreciate taking the time to do so.

Friday we made homemade pizza, played Chez Cthulhu, and socialized. I was really happy at the end of it all that I got another evening with my children. Most of them!

I was so thankful for a group of young folks coming to play a game. I could feed people. They rejoiced! Laughed. Mocked each other a bit. Some of them. Quieted down when the hoary voices and six fingered ancient druids appeared out of the swamp.

Oh at the end of the day to be able to plunk down a book in front of the wizard and say "You earned it. Use any spells in here. By the way I wrote 10% of this."

I am pretty sure I was thankful for seeing faces in clouds. And being in a job that meant that I could leave work, stress-free. With a plan for the next two days. That included two really experienced peers helping me go over a huge new presentation for work.

Justine was in the car with me. I was on the way home. Spencer had been home most of the day. Liam, technically, is old enough to be without a minder but we still worry. So I had one of them home.

Sure enough, all was well at home.

I wonder WTF I made for dinner.

Damn I was happy and thankful for a chance to witness young people laughing. Maybe even facilitate one or two guffaws.

Here's the D&D board from the summer quest that I am privileged - almost feel like I should be paying the guy who started this but I won't cause - nay honored to fill in for. A young man, Thomas by name, got together a group of guys and gals to play D&D. My daughter and her boyfriend among them.

Along the way he realized - or found or fell into - a chance to go to South Africa. My daughter asked "Dad could you fill in?" Of course.

You cannot imagine what tis like to bring D&D to the table with all new bright and shining faces.

One witnesses magic. And gets a tiny chance to add a little to it.

This past Friday I was thankful for a friend, my phone, and my Dad (and Mom).

It turned out to be the last day that I could accompany the Danes around New England. The plan had changed again, due to a slight miscalculation on my part in verifying the "ten minutes from Boston" part of helping the Greatest Dane return his rented camper. It became an epic, 4 hour road trip, during which we just talked and talked and talked and talked and caught up a bit more. Never enough, but enough. When you see friends once every five years or so, it's imperative to get in all that talking.

Well there was also a trip to Dunkin Donuts, traffic between the Cape of Cod, New Hampshire, a trip to Boston, The Global*, and a Dane in Harvard Square shouting "Maria!" acrost it in a beautiful British-accented bass.

Why was I thankful for a friend? My good friend JT lives a mile away from the camper return. (Nota bene: the camper pictured is not the one my friend Soren rented. Or returned. I just thought the possible D&D tie-in to be wonderful.) JT had graciously agreed to not only meet us, but instead of dropping us at the commuter rail, he volunteered to take us all the way into Cambridge! We had a grand conversation touching on so many geeky subjects. The Dane subsequently bought two Hockensmith books on our recommendations.

Why was I grateful for a phone? Well before we got to New Hampshire, there was traffic. Bad traffic. My buddy +Colin Staron had pointed out the wonders of map apps to me a year or so back. I used mine! It showed the traffic. So Soren and I got off the highway, found gas, acquired glazed chocolate donuts, and made a Zorro mark around the backup on Massachusetts roads. This was providential. We got to NH just in time to avoid a surcharge for late drop off and the gas meter was almost exactly where it was supposed to be. Avoiding another surcharge.

Why was I grateful for my Dad? (And Mom?) The phone comes in here. The night before at dinner Dad had pointed out the flaws at sending Soren's bride Marie into Boston in my Vibe crammed with luggage and three tired teenagers. He volunteered to bring them all up in the Jeep. Mom graciously surrendered at least 6 minutes on her TracPhone (out of thousands of stored but she doesn't really know how much) and smiled as her husband of 49 years ran off - Toonerville Trolley style - to help his son's friends on an adventure. And get new running shoes at a discount. I love Mom because she always indulges him. And supports him. As she does all sorts of other good things in her quiet way.

So, to continue.

Once en route to Cambridge Square, I called Dad on the phone. Repeatedly. You see, the plan was to get picked up and return to the Cape to get the Vibe. There were silly little awesome complications around the actual meet up to get Soren back to Marie. Dad kept getting updates from me and driving hither and thither. It ended when an amazing Danish baritone bellowed across traffic by what may be one of the last news kiosks in America.

He found Maria. We ran over and said farewell.

Then Dad drove me home.

To the Cape you know.

Since I had to give all the great overseas cousins a hug and rush off. Men don't cry. They might want to though.

*suitable for another post - it's a drink

With friends from overseas who advised that Plimoth was a) like historical sites in Denmark (Cool!! We learned from a woman in a winter hut - this is an example - how the tribe would live and learn and exist together. Most interesting, matriarchal and thoughtful. We saw examples of toys - more complex than a European child of the time might have - and yet using materials that might otherwise go to waste. A young man described a Wampanoag goalpost as belonging to a game (the name translates: "Let's play ball!") where they played it over a mile on the beach. Tribe against tribe. Sometimes for days. The women and children made food and cheered on the men. (One suspects that the Wampanoags being themselves that if a woman wanted to play that she could.) It was not violent at all, merely skill and prowess. It lasted until someone scored. Once.

Wow.

I could almost get behind this level of living close to the land, in tune with the seasons, and few responsibilities other than feeding ones family.

Now if I may diverge, I remember a young man who came to work with me at Burger King a long, long time ago. His name was Claude. He was 17. I recall at one point him blurting something out - attendance was a problem - to the effect of "How will I feed my family?" He was 17. Never knew what happened to him. Hope he succeeded. I was too young and stupid to realized the help that he needed.

Perhaps in the Wampanoag world he would succeed. Perhaps not. I feel as if he would have been better cared for and not in a position where he had to be the head of household so young.

*This feels like another milestone. Something about round numbers and double digits.

**Nowhere did we really do anything according to the original plan. Which was kinda awesome. We followed the outlines not the specifics.

Last Wednesday I was grateful for blue skies. They followed us down to Cape Cod as the Danes invaded Massachusetts. (In a 35 foot camper no less.) They smiled over the beaches of East Sandwich, where we went to dip our toes into freezing water, skip rocks and beach comb a bit. It was a lovely day of transition.

My friends were most generous and offered to buy me dinner, which I graciously accepted. The meal was excellent. What can I say? I don't serve cod at home due to people's allergies. The real point was actually the company. When you see friends roughly 6 years apart, three hours driving and talking and catching up is a gift.

It makes you think that life itself really is a gift. Or so it seems to me.

You see what I gave thanks for was something unbelievable to me - help with dinner. Willing, happy, chattering folks who were delighted to help* cook, set up and do things? Oh my word it makes putting on the second dinner party for 12 (with many more new curious folks) not just a possibility but a delight. Please note this was the third dinner party of the week, but Sunday's took place over a D&D game, so it was interestingly conjoined. Thanks again for all the help!

The guests sighed contentedly, we got some of the washings up done, and we played Ticket to Ride: Europe. Another treat! A new game, and Bill coming in second to - or being roundly trounced by - a 12 year old Danish teen girl.

Life is kinda awesome.

*Okay Colin always offers and he's awesome, and I really appreciate that. When it's 5-6 I got this dinner thang down cold.___

197/365 - Monday July 21, 2014

That day I was grateful for vacations, curiosity and dinner parties. Oh wow, to actually take time off?? Have people over? That's just never done around Country Lane. But for once the downstairs was clean, we had space, and people kept showing up.

I know it was because we had Danes. You know. The really, really tall lanky kind - no not dogs - with awesome accents. So many people kept turning up just to see them and meet them.

12 for dinner - after a lazy afternoon floating down the Farmington River in inner tubes - was a feat. It was grand. It even led to a Cards Against Humanity match. Since I normally never get to play, that was another treat.

Thank you vacation. Thank you curiosity (and tall Danes). Thank you dinner parties!

The house rang with laughter.

196/365 - Sunday July 20, 2014

The Danish Invasion of Canton began. I was beyond happy to see a great friend from overseas, and his whole family with them, show up on my doorstep at 10 PM Saturday, so that we could all have breakfast and go for a hike on Sunday!

So I am grateful for Talcott Mountain Tower. (And inadvertently alcohol, since Heublein, who built it, imported liquor.) It gave us a spot to walk to, and great views of the Pioneer Valley, and it got the stay moving. On the way back we got to show friends who'd seen redwoods the Pynchot Sycamore and pretend that it was big.

That walking around just led to an awesome D&D game with foreign and domestic friends and relations, so it was a very good day.

195/365 - Saturday July 19, 2014

A week ago this Saturday I was grateful for history. History and industry. This museum - the Sandwich Glass Museum - has a look like the old factory might have had. Sandwich, Mass, is "the town that glass built". Without Deming Jarves and the pine forests of the Cape, Sandwich might have gone deep into an obscure future.

Instead, outside Town Hall, I watched re-enactors take the oath of service for the Civil War. Sandwich was the first town on the Cape to muster a company, and they sent the most of any - 100 men. My daughter strode into the pages of living history as Mary Gregory, a young glass painter working for Jarves. Her style was so widely imitated that it was known as Mary Gregory Glass in the 1800s.

Most importantly and personally, Sandwich was a small, quiet community that let me grow up at my own pace: with a book in hand, walking home from the library; as a young docent at the glass museum (before it looked this nice); as a cyclist hacking about for miles on a Raleigh 3-speed; and as a beachcomber wandering the shores looking for treasure.

Sometimes the simple gifts of upbringing are the greatest.

There and Back Again - Or crud I thought I posted this last night. Well, let's try again.

Last Friday I was grateful for these lighted signs outside Sandwich Town Hall. As in Sandwich Massachusetts, my home town. My daughter having busted her arm a little, it was up to Dad to get her down there - for the town's 375th anniversary celebration. (It's going on all summer.) She was due to be a role-player on Saturday.

The traffic there was non-existent, I had a nightcap with my Dad and Justine, Mom, Dad and I chatted for a good hour. Then I took a wander about the paths of my youth. The place hasn't changed much. Though there's a lovely house overlooking the pond that would be amazing to have to share with friends. Survey says I'm unlikely to have half a million anytime soon.

That day I was thankful for the lights on Sandwich Town Hall - the lights of home.

Eldest daughter having injured her arm a few weeks back meant rejiggering plans so that I could get back for at least one of the 375th anniversary celebrations in my home town of Sandwich, Massachusetts. Along with her, since she was scheduled as a re-enactor, playing Mary Gregory, a young factory worker at Sandwich Glass who painted the glass in the 1860s. (And created a whole style, which is another story.)

Well the 375 lights meant that I was up late, out wandering, taking a stroll after a nightcap with my Dad and conversation with my Mom and my daughter. I went all over the village. It was a good wander.

Rarely does my... more »

That day I was grateful for a laugh. A joyful little kid's toy dancing on the fridge. To me it looked like a happy woman, a delighted lady, Rosie the Robot from Jetson's flattened, cooler, modern and hip. She was pointing away from the fridge. As in "Don't eat any more." It seemed like good advice at that late, late hour.

*Yeah, I know. I fell off the wagon. I kept taking photos though. Gonna try to get up to speed!

190/365 - Monday July 14, 2014

Yesterday I was grateful for experimenting. And umbrellas and iPhones.  Of course, it all has to begin with picking up the boy (Liam) from a group session.

While waiting to get him, I noticed a drop of water on my phone. It had this neat electronic rainbow effect. I thought "I could take a photo with this and it would be so cool." Well I walked back out to the car with him after handing him the umbrella. Rain splashed and sashayed down upon my phone. Big blops lay down on the surface.

He got in the car. Surrendered the bumbershoot. I held it up. Activated the phone. Reversed the flow. Shot photos.

You would never know there were big water droplets on the surface of the phone. I did get this neat image out of it though.

Today I slept for 8 hours. Found the Room of Rest, returned, and dozed another 27 minutes. It gave me great peace. Thank you sleep. Thanks.

So I give thanks for sleep, SD chips that gave up, and serendipitous finds. The sleep I can't picture to you. Save words. A clever artist might, indeed, render it.

The chip? Ahhh. It's been with me since 2008. The Year of the Camera. She Who Lives Upstairs put great thought in that year and I have reveled in the use since. The chip, I confess, I bought rapidly after filling the tiny 32 MB starter that came in the Canon.

That chip has taken well over 10,000 photos. Possibly over 20,000. It served it's time. I called upon it for another 200 or so this past Saturday. A mere fraction. Yet the download time was severe. So to retirement it goes. I limp along with my phone. (How do you... more »

Serendipitous finds? Well that there is the feather of the red-tailed hawk. RTH lives in our yard it seems. Swooping through a lot. The chipmunks scamper looking up - not sideways. After all it's an aging overly compassionate human and a 12 year old mutt lacking a toe! No those munks fear the hawk. Yet here I found it's tail feather on the back patio.

I wonder how it lost it?

Serendipity. So many associations with that word. And here's a tiny gingery reminder. I give thanks that this fell into the yard onto the back "deck" today. The hawk did not catch the munk.

Two days ago I was grateful for being in the moment, cooperative play, and shared experiences.

First, I got to head off to friends to play games on a Friday night. A rare treat for me. Tried out Seven Wonders, which is actually a pretty darned good, fast and fun card game. Like Puerto Rico, the winning strategy stares at me to mock my failure to grasp it. Still, I'd play it again.

Second, we played Pandemic with four players and six Epidemics. This is a cooperative game. The first cooperative board game we really played was the original Arkham Horror. This is the second. (There are a few more out nowadays.) As the epidemics appeared rapidly, and the options declined, we scrabbled for ways to maximize our efforts. They did not pan out. It was only just a game. That day I was grateful for paint and projects and people. My friend Colin came over to work on his minis and I hauled out this. It's not done, but I made progress! Plus who doesn't love spraying chrome paint all over stuff??

But seriously Colin and I have been friends for a decade now, we're pretty sure. He's one of a handful of folks (like my buddy Kevin) who just came into my life one day and I'm damn grateful that he's still around. He brought his girlfriend Lucia over. I'm pretty damn happy that he's got a girlfriend, and a good one. It's also great that he comes by himself sometimes and with her on others.

Friends - good friends - are family that you get to choose.
