Moon and Venus from Spain
Sometimes the sky above can become quite a show. In early September of 2010, for example, the Moon and Venus converged, creating quite a sight by itself for sky enthusiasts around the globe. From some locations, though, the sky was even more picturesque. In the above image taken in Spain, a crescent Moon and the planet Venus, on the far right, were captured during sunset posing against a deep blue sky.
In the foreground, dark storm clouds loom across the image bottom, while a white anvil cloud shape appears above. Black specks dot the frame, caused by a flock of birds taking flight. Very soon after this picture was taken, however, the birds passed by, the storm ended, and Venus and the Moon set. Bright Venus again becomes visible just after sunset this 2013 May and will appear near Jupiter toward the end of the month.

ADVANCED COMMENTING FEATURES
One of the big flaws with Google+'s current implementation is its mediocre commenting system. Threaded discussions and sorting have existed in a number of other social networks from traditional BBS to Reddit, but are lacking from Google+. These features make in-depth discussions a lot easier to follow, thereby increasing high level interaction between users.
An example of how this would look is included in the screenshot below. Two features which would greatly improve the commenting experience are as follows:
#1. Threaded Discussions
The level of threading could be 2 or 3 maximum. The reply button's current Twitter-like functionality makes it hard to interact with multiple people. Youtube's improved commenting system is proof that Google understands how to make this work well, and is a good example of a good comment... more »

Choro Trail
We got back from a 4 day unsupported hike of the Choro Trail a few days ago. From 4,800m to 1,300m, with only a few other people spotted over the entire trail. One of the most beautiful hikes of my life. Hard to say if it was better than the Torres. Definitely more peaceful than crowded campsites and trails with lots of other gringos... but Patagonia's mountains might be slightly more impressive.

This is in no way meaningful because the important part is how awesome people are on here. Follower numbers don't indicate quality of the community in which we surround ourselves. Google+ quite literally changed the way I used the internet from an anonymous forum addict (ten years in the same mind-numbing place) to being completely opened about myself on the Internet.
That is one of Google+'s greatest strengths... opening people to being themselves more on the Internet. FB is our real-life connection to the Internet, but not a place to be online. Twitter is limited. Reddit is great for content and discussion, but impossible to make friends.
Anyways just wanted to say that y'all are cool.

To celebrate its 23rd year in orbit, the NASA/ESA #Hubble Space Telescope has released a stunning new image of one of the most distinctive objects in our skies: the Horsehead Nebula. This image shows the nebula in a whole new light, capturing plumes of gas in the infrared and revealing a beautiful, delicate structure that is normally obscured by dust.

The Oldest Known Melody
The Oldest known musical melody performed by the very talented Michael Levy on the Lyre. This ancient musical fragment dates back to 1400 B.C.E. and was discovered in the 1950's in Ugarit, Syria. It was interpreted by Dr. Richard Dumbrill. He wrote a book entitled "The Archaeomusicology of the Ancient Near East."

First Contact
Sagonia's control deck was crammed with the ship's dozen crew members. Captain Froyd was standing next to the main holographic display, waiting for the room to quiet down before speaking. The projection hovering in the centre of the small room listed a number of statistics and initial local sensor readings that had been collected since the jump eight hours ago.
The reason for the crew's excitement was visible through the large, currently transparent, window near the empty pilot couches. In front of the ship floated a bluish sphere, splattered with large splotches of various shades of red and brown. Above that, fast moving pinkish clouds were making their way across the planet.

The Boston Marathon Bombing: Keep Calm and Carry On
+The Atlantic wrote about the importance of not going crazy over the marathon bombings. It'll be interesting to see if America can keep its collective lid from exploding over the next few weeks and take a sane reaction like the Norwegians did in '11.
To all fellow marathonians, it sucks that our community was targeted. Two of my good friends were at the race yesterday and knowing that some jackass targeted them and thousands of others who just want to enjoy an awesome day of the most basic sport humans can compete, sucks. I hope they find the person who did this and let him rot in jail for the rest of his life.
But I sure as hell hope they won't start checking my kit bag every race.

Study: Listening to Certain Sounds Seems to Improve Sleep
Participants played "pink noise" that was synchronized to their brain rhythms slept more deeply and had increased memory retention.
It's interesting seeing how sleep can be impacted like this. What's even more interesting is: what's the evolutionary pressure that could have led to needing some noise over no-noise or different noises?
Maybe we evolved with a bit of sound from wind, and that's more natural thus it makes us sleep better?

Flamingo Love
It's +Karine Praglowski and I's 9th anniversary today. We're celebrating by going to the #1 rated restaurant in La Paz on Trip Advisor. A big $5-12 per head, which is way above our daily budget... but this seems like a good occasion to spend.
Even managed to find some jeans in a hole-in-the-wall store... and they feel great after 3 months of bike shorts and trekking pants.

A human living and working off our planet grabbed this pic of a structure that formed in the Eastern Sahara about 140 million years earlier when dinosaurs were still Earth's dominant creature. Although the circular shape and shatter cones suggest the Arkenu craters were formed as a result of a shocking impact from space, some scientists suggest they were formed by shocking eruptions from deep within Earth, and then brought into view by 1,400,000 centuries of erosion.
