Twenty Seven Days after Z-Day
Fracking zombies. Not literally. They say that can lead to sexually transmitted death. But yeah, they're really annoying. We found a place a few weeks ago, a few dozen kilometers away from Metropolis. It's got good walls and a concrete foundation, but we're running out of food fast. There are zombs all around the compound, so farming is a no-go until we can clear out the area. Basically, the zombies are slowly fracking us to death. A bit like how chemical fracking is bad for the environment, zombie fracking can kill people.

Where to go? Mila had gone out with Rob on a few scouting missions trying to find somewhere, anywhere, to setup a bit more permanently. For a crowd of 'most a hundred, it ain't easy to find proper accommodations. They'd now raided every scrap leftover within a reasonable area, but, well,... more »

Immortality is an Engineering Problem
And sadly, it's a big engineering problem.
I mean, ok, you fix the cell replication process so we can do it relatively indefinitely and without error and you've still got the whole problem that the brain isn't growing new cells in there and is slowly dying from environmental damage.
So you fix that, somehow keeping the brain alive indefinitely and without decline, and the guy in question goes out and gets hit by a car.

So you decide maybe trancendental is the way to go and you figure out a way to pull the human out of the body and slap it into a cloud of electricity, which is fine until the server it's housed in gets turned off, hit by lightning, flooded, smacked by a comet, or just generally falls apart from entropy without anyone bothering to keep it going.

The Internet has improved the world tremendously. We live in a golden age of information and the future's potential should not be downplayed because of people like +william gordon who just posted this gem in the +The White House's latest Google+ post.

But it's hard to not be a cynic towards humanity when filth like this pollutes our access to a better world. 

I really, really hope he was trolling... but judging by his profile it really doesn't look that way. 

May God save Us All... and by God I mean that energy that exists between our neurons, giving some of us the capacity to think critically.

Anyone want to take bets on how much this guy loves to take it up the arse?

The substance is the inky black colour of oil, and the treetops are brown. Across a broad expanse of northern Alberta muskeg, the landscape is dead. It has been poisoned by a huge spill of 9.5 million litres of toxic waste from an oil and gas operation in northern Alberta, the third major leak in a region whose residents are now questioning whether enough is being done to maintain aging energy infrastructure.

Mount Huynapicchu vs Mount Machupicchu

Turns out Machu Picchu tickets expire after 6 hours... so our reservation for Huynapicchu didn't make it. Instead we climbed the much harder Mount Machupicchu and to be honest, the sights are somehow even better. FYI, the park doesn't put a person limit on Machupicchu because it's too hard... so if you can't make it to Huynapicchu, don't worry and just do this instead. Just make sure you have a moderate fitness level.

Confession Time: Self-Improvement Never Stops
One of the big things I've been working on during the trip is learning to smile properly. Growing up, I had extremely crooked teeth (1cm front/back gap) with my 2 big teeth, so I always kept my mouth closed. This made it so I never developed important open-mouthed smiling skills. After lots of looking at mirrors and photos, and having my gf guide me, it's now improved considerably. I hope.

NASA Working Towards FTL Travel

What is the Alcubierre Drive? It’s actually based on Einsteins field equations, it suggests that a spacecraft could achieve faster-than-light travel. Rather than exceed the speed of light alone in a craft. A spacecraft would leap long distances by contracting space in front of it and expanding space behind it, which would result in faster than light travel (1). Physicist Miguel Alcubierre was the first that we know to identify this possibility. He described it as remaining still on a flat piece of space-time inside a warp bubble that was made to move at “superluminal” (faster than light) velocity. We must not forget that space-time can be warped and distorted, it can be moved. This might be a far one, but I just reheard an awesome song I had forgotten about (while getting a massage), unfortunately, I didn't pick up any lyrics and it's not very hummable.
-Female vocalist that sounds a bit like Loreena Mckennitt, but searching through her tunes I didn't find anything. Doesn't mean it's not her though.
-Beautiful Afro-beats, sort of mixed with Celtic music
-Switches to a boy's choir (I think?) at one point

It's got, and I hate to use this word, a rather epic feel to it, and could possibly be from a movie soundtrack.

The Global Youth Jobless Crisis: A Tragic Mess That Is Not Getting Any Better

Growing up is getting tougher in a lot of the world. Not only is it much more expensive to start life, we've got less jobs available now.

Are boomers responsible for this? What's one's responsibility in ensuring a good future for the incoming generations?

As Ritchie King from Quartz shows in the graph to the left, it's now "harder for a teenager or young adult to find a job in developed economies than in Sub-Saharan Africa."

Interestingly, the USA is one of the few places with decreasing youth unemployment. This is a great sign for the future, as often the USA signals what's to come for the rest of the world.

Walking around Isla del Sol in Bolivia, you eventually reach this pre-Inca spiritual site. This table is where they used to sacrifice people to their Gods. 

Sometimes, society seems like it's hopeless... but then all it takes is one reminder of how far we've moved forward in just a few centuries to bring us back to the wonderful world in which we are lucky enough to live today.

Out of the billions of people who have lived, we are fortunate enough to be conscious during the Internet age, where humans are now nearly fully interconnected. Any westerner has access to the world's food in excess, and the capacity to travel and discover Earth if they choose to. We can entertain ourselves with games that bring us to other worlds.
