How to Learn Anything

"The major barrier to skill acquisition isn't intellectual... it's emotional." An excellent reminder of how easy it can be to learn a new skill. Kaufman says it only takes 20 hours!

Update: I'd like to add a counterpoint to balance Kaufman's message. I love his talk and it feels intuitively true to me, but there's also another side to the story.

Sometimes it's more fun to learn inefficiently! I love leisurely learning, like following tangents or indulging in reading too many books. :) Every field of study has its own culture and community, its own legends and weird trivia and rich backstories. Exploring and immersing yourself in those strange new cultures is half the fun!

So on top of those 20 hours focused on efficiency, I think it's just as important to have at least a few hours of... more »

The Floating Temple: How to Lift a Seven Million Pound, 112-year-old Building

For the past several months, Provo, Utah, residents have had a unique sight in their midst: the nearly seven-million-pound exterior of a 112-year-old building standing on 40-foot-high steel stilts. More than just an unusual construction site, this scene is the beginning of an extensive process to preserve the exterior of the Provo Tabernacle, a community landmark gutted by fire in December 2010. As The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced in October 2011, the building is being converted into a Mormon temple.

WOO..Google+ knocks it out of the park

I was stuck in meetings all day, peeking at my phone when I could to get a hint of the changes we were all anticipating from G+. I'm honestly completely thrilled by everything that's happened. I have already forgotten what the old stream layout looked like. I love how easy it is for me to see the amazing content that packs the G+ halls. I also love how my own page looks.  

The one thing I was dying to get home and try out is the Auto Awesome function, showcased earlier by +Brian Matiash. As I don't have any DSLR images to plug into the Motion feature, I decided to test it out with some +GoPro timelapse images from the SF sunset last weekend. Ok, these are GoPro images so the quality isn't great but the functionality in G+ is pretty fast, super user-friendly, and c'mon...it's a little bit of genius. Can't waitt... more »

So the new Google+ Layout Looks Like Facebook? Really?

Yesterday Google+ rolled out 41 new updates to the platform. Among these updates was a somewhat radical shift from what most users were used to. I personally am enjoying the new look, especially since it gives lots of love to photos (including vertical images that were previously cropped in our streams). However with any change there are certain to be people that are left unhappy. 

One of the most common comparisons is that the new Google+ looks like Facebook. Being a photographer and a visual artist, I decided to draft up a simple comparison to show you that they do not in fact look alike.While my monitors have a large enough resolution to showcase three columns, even the two column version has a much different feel and vibe.

Twitter ‘Hate Map’ shows where racist, homophobic, and offensive tweets originate

Students at Humboldt State University in California individually reviewed 150,000 geocoded tweets containing racist, homophobic, or otherwise offensive terms to build a “hate map” indicating where people in the U.S. are most bigoted.
Or, at least, where they’re the most open about displaying their antisocial views.

Square introduces $299 stand aimed at replacing cash registers

Square today unveiled a new piece of hardware designed to replace traditional cash registers in the businesses that use the company to accept payments. Square Stand, which can be pre-ordered for $299 starting today, features an integrated card reader for processing payments.

An iPad connects to the stand, and the payment software runs on iOS. The stand connects to receipt printers, barcode scanners and other peripherals. It will become available in July online and at traditional retailers including Best Buy.

FCC sets the stage to make in-flight Wi-Fi ridiculously fast

In-flight Wi-Fi is one of the best aspects of modern air travel — even though it’s far slower than what you’d get from a 4G LTE smartphone or a  typical home broadband connection. But that could all change in a few years.

Yesterday the Federal Communications Commission approved a plan to open up wireless spectrum to speed up in-flight Wi-Fi, the New York Times reports. While it’s only the first of many steps that need to be taken, it shows that the FCC is aware of the growing importance of getting online during flights. (At this point, it’s practically a requirement for me during any cross-country flight.)

How hackers allegedly stole $45M of cash from ATMs in just hours

Federal authorities have accused eight men of participating in 21st-Century Bank heists that netted a whopping $45 million by hacking into payment systems and eliminating withdrawal limits placed on prepaid debit cards.

The eight men formed the New York-based cell of an international crime ring that organized and executed the hacks and then used fraudulent payment cards in dozens of countries to withdraw the loot from automated teller machines, federal prosecutors alleged in court papers unsealed Thursday. In a matter of hours on two separate occasions, the eight defendants and their confederates withdrew about $2.8 million from New York City ATMs alone. At the same times, "cashing crews" in cities in at least 26 countries withdrew more than $40 million in a similar fashion.

Amazon Is Developing Smartphone With 3-D Screen According to WSJ.

Amazon is expanding beyond its range of Kindle devices as it aims to compete more directly with Google and Apple. 

The Seattle e-commerce giant has recently been developing a wide-ranging lineup of gadgets—including two smartphones and an audio-only streaming device—to expand its reach beyond its Kindle Fire line of tablet computers, said people familiar with the company's plans.

One of the devices is a high-end smartphone featuring a screen that allows for three-dimensional images without glasses, these people said. Using retina-tracking technology, images on the smartphone would seem to float above the screen like a hologram and appear three-dimensional at all angles, they said. Users may be able to navigate through content using just their eyes, two of the people said.

New Executive Order on Open Data Enables Government as a Platform

I've made the case that the history of technology adoption is really the history of platforms, which then enable big developer ecosystems. This was the story of the PC, of the web, and now of the smartphone era.  

Government too can act as a platform provider - but for society as a whole. Think the Interstate Highway System in the US, weather satellites, or the way the opening up of the GPS system for private use enabled everything from in-car navigation to Foursquare.

Open data is to the 21st century as the highway system was to the 20th. Today, President Obama issued an executive order that will put more fuel on the open data fire.

This is something I'm very happy to hear. My own feeling is that patents (and similar intellectual property rights) serve the purpose of encouraging innovation when they're in a field that's already mature, development is expensive, and people need time to recoup these costs. They hinder innovation when the field is in rapid flux, and any invention is likely to be independently produced by many people: at that point, it becomes a way for companies (and other IP holders) to draw arbitrary fences about what other people can and can't do, and demand fees for work that other people did on their own. Software is one such field. (Whereas refrigerators probably aren't)

My own preferred reform would be to establish a 20-year moratorium on the granting of new patents for software, as well as a moratorium on causes of action emerging from such patents. We can look again in a few decades... more »

I love that Andy Grove has taken such an interest in healthcare, and has such an intelligent, principled point of view.  I hope that lawmakers take notice. The things he's looking for are eminently reasonable (healthcare cost transparency and comparative effectiveness of treatments), yet they are resisted tooth and nail by profiteers who have long gouged patients.

It's time for a change.

The Ban On Google Glass

Though Glass is only just starting to roll out to 2,000 developers, with more on the way, the resistance from privacy advocates and legislators is already underfoot, closely followed by inevitable, knee-jerk rulings.

The New York Times reports today the augmented reality headset has been preemptively banned by a Seattle dive bar. West Virginia legislators have attempted to make it illegal for drivers to sport Glass behind the wheel. Las Vegas casinos such as Caesars, which prohibits computers and recording devices, won't be welcoming Glass. And a White House petition requests the federal government ban Glass from the entire United States until we enforce stricter limitations on public surveillance.

Microsoft announce Windows 8 rework in 'biggest product U-turn since New Coke'
Updated version of operating system will take into account complaints made by users

Microsoft is set to bow to pressure from customers and change “key aspects” of its much-maligned Windows 8 operating system.

In a move described by some analysts as the biggest product U-turn since Coca Cola dropped “New Coke” 30 years ago, an updated version of Microsoft 8 released later this year will be significantly different.

Microsoft's head of marketing and finance, Tammy Reller, confirmed the plan in an interview with the Financial Times, admitting that many users had struggled to master the new operating system. “The learning curve is definitely real,” she said.

After nearly 10 years, Adobe abandons its Creative Suite entirely to focus on Creative Cloud

Adobe first launched Creative Suite 1 back in 2003, and now, ten years and six versions later, the company is taking a left turn: Adobe is abandoning its Creative Suite entirely to focus efforts on Creative Cloud.

Adobe is pointing all of its energy towards Creative Cloud, eliminating the familiar retail box in the process. Like last year, the company is releasing an updated suite of applications this June, newly branded as “CC” apps. This includes: Photoshop CC, InDesign CC, Illustrator CC, Dreamweaver CC and Premiere Pro CC.
