Mass killings are part of our culture, and we are apparently fine with that. If the killing of 27 people in an elementary school couldn't get us to make a single change in our society, nothing will. We have simply accepted this as our American way of life (and death).

Have to say, it's a huge disappointment. It just doesn't seem to work. I looked at the Pressy app reviews and it seems like there are big problems.

Has anyone received one, and does it work for you?

Our concept of "privacy" combines three things: first is secrecy, or our ability to keep the content of our messages known only to those we intend to receive them. Second is anonymity, or secrecy about who is sending and receiving messages, where the content of the messages may not be secret at all. It is very important that anonymity is an interest we can have both in our publishing and in our reading. Third is autonomy, or our ability to make our own life decisions free from any force that has violated our secrecy or our anonymity. These three – secrecy, anonymity and autonomy – are the principal components of a mixture we call "privacy".

Without secrecy, democratic self-government is impossible. Without secrecy, people may not discuss public affairs with those they choose, excluding those with whom they do not wish to converse.

Anonymity is necessary for the conduct of democratic politics. Not only must we be able to choose with whom we discuss politics, we must also be able to protect ourselves against retaliation for our expressions of political ideas. Autonomy is vitiated by the wholesale invasion of secrecy and privacy. Free decision-making is impossible in a society where every move is monitored, as a moment's consideration of the state of North Korea will show, as would any conversation with those who lived through 20th-century totalitarianisms, or any historical study of the daily realities of American chattel slavery before our civil war.

In other words, privacy is a requirement of democratic self-government. The effort to fasten the procedures of pervasive surveillance on human society is the antithesis of liberty. This is the conversation that all the "don't listen to my mobile phone!" misdirection has not been about. If it were up to national governments, the conversation would remain at this phoney level forever.

I think this is a great read, from Eben Moglen. (via Bruce Schneier's twitter feed)___

SPOILERS
So Star Trek: Into Darkness is now on Netflix streaming. I watched it the other night. I hate to say it but I came away with a really bad feeling. It wasn't Star Trek, it was a super-hero-monster-explosion-porn movie.

A giant starship plowing into San Francisco, leveling skyscrapers and presumably killing 10s of thousands of people on screen is not what Star Trek means to me. Yes, I know there have been other cataclysmic events depicted in Star Trek over the years, but never with the loving buildings-crashing-down detail that seems to be de rigueur post-9/11.

Wrath of Khan was so much better than this remake.</rant>

The only Google software I'm really wishing I had was Hangouts, because I use it for free family texting. I have a workaround that's fine, but it's frustrating that Google makes software for Apple and not Microsoft.

Outlook via outlook.com is 100x better than Gmail IMHO, and OneDrive, Office, and IE11 work great. Calendar is beautifully done, and the Bing apps (News, Weather, Finance, etc) carry over from Windows8.1 in a very pleasing-to-use... more »

Using WP with Exchange (work email) is so easy -- hooray for usability. Integration with Windows does not feel intrusive or forced; the things that persist across the devices just make sense.

I know I won't convert anyone, but I am not regretting the move from Android at all. Looking forward to the MS/Nokia collaboration -- I think they could do some really interesting things, esp. with Nokia's GPS/mapping expertise.

Happy to answer any questions...___

Coming Soon: Coke for the K-Cup Crowd
http://news.yahoo.com/coming-soon-coke-k-cup-004300180.html

I'm sure it will be a huge hit. You'd think after 10 years of war in the middle east, Americans would be looking for ways to reduce the use of plastics and energy. Instead, we can't seem to consume enough. Gross.

cc +M Sinclair Stevens

Let's see, what other completely unnecessary and insipid "innovations" can we propose? How about this:

Anheuser-Busch set to begin offering beer 'by the glass.' Special packaging is being developed and custom refrigeration units will be of course required for every establishment that wishes to compete in this market.

A "glass" of beer will cost slightly more than a bottle or draft, but A-B feels that customers demanding a "quick and ready" brew will happily pay a premium.  Beer served 'by the glass' will be made with recipes in line with the bland beer already favored by many Americans.___Wow, you can't make this stuff up. "Hey, women, by mandating that the insurance you buy provides reproductive health coverage, the government is calling you a slut. Just say no to insurance, because proper women pay out of pocket for their birth control!"

Wow, that is totally inspiring.

This is an intensely personal question I've often thought about asking you.

You are going to be immortal, man. Long after all of us are dead, the image of you as Luke Skywalker will be like Superman, or Harry Potter, or Gandalf, or Jesus. Even if the films are remade, your depiction of Luke will always be a spectre over whomever is playing him.

Are you humbled by this? Terrified? Typecast? Would you rather be known as a fictional character or the person portraying him?

Great question. Well, I'm all those things. I'm certainly humbled. But's hard to really wrap one's head around. I didn't get into this business to be famous, I got in because I really like communicating. I wasn't even sure I was going to be an actor. So I look at that as Luke, not really as me. Luke is immortal and I'm just an actor who got the honor to play him.

You just have to just stay focused on what challenges you and what inspires you. And that's why I went to Broadway because I thought I'd get to explore new things. I'm not really somehow who goes back and re-watches old stuff I've done. I haven't seen any of the films since they were in the theater - originals or prequels. I thought the prequels are amazing by the way. If we were a garage band, they were a philharmonic. As George said, Star Wars is the most expensive small low movie ever made. Sorry, I think I got off on a tangent on this question.___
