I'm planning to build a CoreXY printer, and I'm having problems finding the 'perfect' low cost printable extruder. Can you find me help me find the one that matches the following criteria?
-Bowden: to keep the weight of the print head low
-Geared: to apply enough pressure for smaller nozzles even with small or TMC2100 powered steppers
-Ergonomic: quick filament release is a big wish
-Economical: 3d printable if possible, not too exotic parts, vanilla NEMA 17, ideally Open Source

It's supposed to feed a E3D v6 1.75mm 24V hotend (which comes with 4mm PTFE tubing).
What would be your take?

Do you know this situation?
You almost finished a rather long reply in the Google notification bar, and then you click somewhere next to it -
Aaaaaaaand ... it's gone!

Will +Google+ fix this anytime soon? Please share this if you hope so!

Whole europe is under the greatest Ingress field i've ever seen, and it's up for several hours now, which is rare.
I don't know details yet, but I think this is possibly the greatest coup in #Ingress history.
Surely, dozens of resistance agents have mobilized, taken a spontaneous holiday, and are rushing towards some really remote locations. :-D #enlightened #win
Edit: It's Op #GreenMarble, an interstellar beacon :)

The linear bearings for my next pet project have arrived.
This will become a low-cost CoreXY 3D printer.
If my reasoning proves correct, it should be easy to scale, simple to build (no extrusion profiles), and quite quick.

Finally got around to redesigning my froggy doll - this the test print. He now has movable eyes and jointed fingers. He can also stand by himself.
Now to print him in better filament and write up assembly documentation. Then I'll publish him.

Is your 3D printer too loud?
I've replaced the stepper drivers of my Ultimaker Original 3D printer with TMC2100 SilentStepSticks, making it much more silent.
It's clearly one of the greatest upgrades you can give your printer, and they are not even expensive (at €10 per piece).

What's the difference? Hear for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhvDPsydoXWijsYrxydBrp5Uyhir-_4n4

Installing them took some time, but they've been working flawlessly  ever since (about two months now). I totally recommend them, check them out: https://github.com/watterott/SilentStepStick

First I thought #batteriser  would be a great thing.
But it turns out that the claims tied to it (800% battery capacity increase) are vastly exagerated.
Dave from +EEVblog explains: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iEshd6izgk
Basically it seems you could use it to get a bit usable power out of used up batteries on some devices, but with full batteries you might actually lose power on most devices.
Now, from my viewpoint it seems there's little point in not just using rechargeable batteries instead in the first place..

3d hubs extended their university student giveaway offer.
If you're a university student (and don't already have), head over to
http://www.3dhubs.com/students and claim your free $25 3d printing voucher.
As fas as I can see, universities of all countries are supported, and there are no strings attached.
I think that's pretty generous of +3D Hubs so don't miss it.
And of course you're invited to spend your credit with my Hub :)

Printing #Fairphone cases is not exactly #3dprinting for profit (at €12.50 per print), but there seems to be a demand for these.
It's less than 24h since I passed the certification of +3D Hubs and +Fairphone, and I've already got 2 orders.

Sadly, the advanced (experimental) Cura profile provided doesn't work with my Cura (14.09 and 14.07). Instead of fixing  I resorted to the faster Simplify3d, with the added benefit of economical manually defined supports for the inevitable overhangs.

My current print settings - 0.125mm layer height, 0.6mm extrusion (with original 0.4mm nozzle) at 40mm/s - seem to give nice results with a printing time of 3h.

For more infos on Fairphone cases, head over to http://www.3dhubs.com/fairphone for more info.

Probably the first  powerbank that's chargeable in 5 minutes.
Would be absolutely perfect for #Ingress.
Early-bird rewards  ($149 for a set of two) are still available.
That's a probably good deal, even in regard that the product won't be ready until late 2015.

I just signed up with +Threeding, as they seem to be a nice market place for 3d models. They pissed me off at the very first moment.

Right in my welcome mail, they included my password.
And as if unsolicitedly sending of sensitive information over insecure channels isn't worse enough, testing the forgot password-function, I also received my password per mail.
So they  not only send you your password after sign-up, they obviously also store user passwords unencrypted!

Need I explain how this affects the security of unsuspecting users that probably use the same password at several places?

This is absolutely the worst handling of user data on a 'quality' website I've seen in years, totally unresponsible and unacceptable! Shame on you +Threeding, and shame on your web developers!

It's been a while since +Michael Kukat invited me to the #5dayquest, but I think this is the right opportunity to step in.

What I'm currently doing is taking photographs of my 3d printed projector system.

On the picture is the currently largest variant, featuring a 600mm Novoflex follow-focus SLR lens from the 80s, together with a triple Cree XM-L LED flashlight, allowing for a projection distance of around 150m.
While it's technically portable, its weight of 3kg, and 0.8m lenght make it a bit unwieldy. Also, it's appearance might get you in trouble - but power always comes at a price, doesn't it? ;)

So that's about it, thanks again to +Michael Kukat for the invitation. Todays nomination to join in goes to +Thomas Meschke.

Maybe they're overrun due to their recently renewed price model?
At this pace, I would make my christmas orders with them right now.

Since saturday I'm trying to get a digital certificate from StartSSL.com. It's quite a chore, and I think I give it up now.
From weekend maintenance downtime to server overload to registration not working. I think I'd rather throw my snakeoil money somewhere else.

Soooo... Any suggestions where I should get my simple no-browser-warning HTTPS certificate for a reasonable price?

I'm looking for a good quality affordable 3d printer for a friend. This one just popped up in my G+ stream and caught my eye.
What do you think about this device? Do you have a better recommendation, possibly in Europe?
Thanks!

Cruel and cost efficient auxillary flash to tripod mount.

1/4" to hot shoe adapter, the cheapest option

Yesterday, i found out that 1/4" to hot shoe adapters cost between 5-10€ and often are more than i need. A bit expensive IMHO. I could live with a 3-pack of them for 10€ or so, but i want the simplest construction, no fancy mechanisms, it's simply not necessary, i have enough ways to lock the flash and/or radio trigger in place.

So i just had a very simple idea. Hard, but true - just get a bunch of old SLR bodies or any other camera with a 1/4" tripod mount and a hot shoe from eBay, they are totally okay for the purpose and sometimes you can get a set of worthless, maybe even broken cameras for less than 5€.

So finally i have a use for those cameras that come with sets i buy for very cheap for completely different stuff.___Cruel and cost efficient auxillary flash to tripod mount.

Some practical inspiration from my best friend:
Given a 5l Samla box (or a similar plastic box), it's just 5 minutes of work to get a cheap universal spool holder. And there's also the option of adding a dust cover.

Ich freue mich auf die Wiederholung am 1. August.

Please say hello to the guerillaBeam mascot "Batowl". :)

The layout is circular, as this makes it a lot easier to project.
The image is actually designed as a guerillaBeam slide.

It's Open Source (the way I aim to publish all of my guerillaBeam slides), so if you like to, please go ahead and play with it: http://guerillabeam.net/img/batowl_25_15.svg___Field tests have shown that, for some unknow reason, viewers respond quite strongly to bat-like projected shapes.

An adapter rail for rifle scopes and such
I've made this adapter to fit my red dot scope to the portable projectors I produce.  It think it's able to support almost any other Stanag/Nato accessories with acceptable accuracy.
I'd be glad if you find a reason to print it, check it out, and tell me about your results. Drawings for the corresponding dovetail joints are attached for your convenience.
As all GuerillaBeam parts, it's free under CC BY-NC-SA

Print ABS without warping, using Divide & Conquer redesign
I just made a redesign of a flashlight adapter for printing it in ABS -without heated build plate or ABS glue.

The original form, when printed in ABS would always resulting in a completely unusable part. The large base alone would produce enough tension to lift the part from the plate, and split layers sooner or later.

Therefore, in the hope of reducing internal stress, the current form features small 'cells' that are connected in a flexible way.

It's currently still printing (51%). What's your guess: Will it turn out well?

PS: If you like, you can study the part in 3D at https://clara.io/user/universalist.

German Montagsmahnwachen

Danke!

However it's still expensive, and probably not becoming anything like a standard feature anywhere, in the next years. Too bad.

I'd say everyone, but the streets will be crowded heavily, so it's not advisable to carry too much with me.

I am currently conducting tests with +GuerillaBeam , using 12V DC power supplies.
With an 1.5 Ampere power supply and at ambient temperature, my 3 Cree XM-L T6 bike light draws about 14W.
After about 10 minutes the thermal protection of the light kicks in (which is nice) and reduces the power consumption to about 10W, stabilizing the lights (outside) temperature at about 60°C (which is also nice for not melting the PLA).
Seems useable! :)
