About 14 years ago, I got a bad cold, and my voice became hoarse. At the time I didn’t think much about it. But my voice never fully recovered. So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis. This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly. Despite extensive examination, the doctors never identified a cause — though there was speculation of virus-based damage from my cold. It is quite common in cases like these that a definitive cause is not found.
While this condition never really affected me — other than having a slightly weaker voice than normal which some people think sounded a little funny — it naturally raised questions in my mind about my second vocal cord. But I was told that sequential paralysis of one vocal cord following another is extremely rare.
Fast forward to last summer, when the same pattern repeated itself... more »

We are in the middle of our Q1 earnings call right now. Here are the remarks I just gave.
--------------------
Hi everyone. Thank you for joining us. It’s great to be on the call this afternoon.
If you are listening online, I hope you liked our warm-up video, I hear they had a great time making it.
OK … We had a really strong start to 2013 -- with Q1 revenue up 31 per cent year-on-year to $14 billion. I want to give a big shout out to the sales teams that made this all possible. We tend to focus on product and engineering -- but our business organization is tremendously strong. They are Google’s unsung heroes.
Over the last two years, we’ve worked hard to increase our velocity, improve our execution and focus on the big bets that will make a difference in the world.
Take Google Now. Our goal is to get you the right information, at... more »

Today the country of Malaysia announced that they are adopting Google Apps (our suite of cloud-based tools that includes Gmail, Docs and Calendar) for 10 million students, teachers and parents. They’ll also be deploying Chromebooks to primary and secondary schools nationwide. These efforts are part of Malaysia’s national education reform, which includes making the web central to its education system (you can read the full plan here: http://goo.gl/dMxdG).

Just posted this on the official google blog:
Sergey and I first heard about Android back in 2004, when Andy Rubin came to visit us at Google. He believed that aligning standards around an open-source operating system would drive innovation across the mobile industry. Most people thought he was nuts. But his insight immediately struck a chord because at the time it was extremely painful developing services for mobile devices. We had a closet full of more than 100 phones and were building our software pretty much device by device. It was nearly impossible for us to make truly great mobile experiences.
Fast forward to today. The pace of innovation has never been greater, and Android is the most used mobile operating system in the world: we have a global partnership of over 60 manufacturers; more than 750 million devices have been activated globally; and 25 billion apps have now been ... more »

I loved meeting Charles Chase from Lockheed Skunk Works because he wants to change the world and he has a plan. His dream is about building a compact fusion reactor (that would fit it on the back of a truck) which is capable of generating 100MW of electricity - enough to power a small city. Charles thinks he could have a prototype in 5 years and a fully engineered plant in 10 years. This would be capable of meeting all electricity demands globally by 2050. All with virtually zero emissions. An exciting example of how 10X thinking could make the world a better place.

Here is the speech I just gave on our earnings call:
Happy New Year everyone and welcome to our earnings call. Thank you for joining us this afternoon.
We ended 2012 with a strong quarter. Revenue was up 36% year-on-year, and 8% quarter-on-quarter. And we hit $50 billion in revenue for the first time last year – not a bad achievement in just a decade and a half.
We’ve talked a lot about excellence and velocity over the last year. While many claim it’s my nature never to be satisfied, we’ve actually made real progress creating more beautiful and more intuitive products.
Take Search. The perfect search engine would understand exactly what you mean, and give you exactly what you want. Our Knowledge Graph brings that much closer.

Lady Ada Lovelace, born nearly two centuries ago on December 10, 1815, is considered by some to be the world’s first computer programmer. In 1843, she published the first algorithm intended for use on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine. Nearly a century before the first computers were built, Ada envisaged a day when a single machine would be capable of a myriad of tasks, limited only by the creativity of its programmer.
Today we're celebrating Ada's prophetic vision for computing with a doodle on homepages worldwide. We hope today's doodle inspires people to find out more about Ada, and about the contributions made by women in general to science and technology. Read more: http://goo.gl/zL9Ar

Personally providing free flu shots to all San Francisco bay area kids at Target -- just walk in. Research shows giving kids flu shots can have a big effect in preventing flu in the whole region and protecting elderly. (Don't worry, I'm not actually administering the shots :)
The CDC has designated December 2–8 as National Influenza Vaccination Week to highlight the importance of continuing flu vaccination throughout the flu season. So happy National Influenza Vaccination Week.

Hello everyone -- thanks for joining us. It’s great to be on the call today and to share our progress since we last spoke six months ago. As you can hear my voice is still hoarse so I will keep my remarks reasonably short.
I am sorry for the scramble earlier today. As our printers have said, they hit send on the release just a bit early.
We had a strong quarter -- I am really happy with our business.
Revenue was up 45 per cent year-on-year, and, at just fourteen years old, we cleared our first $14 billion revenue quarter. Not bad for a teenager!

Really excited about what happened yesterday. California Governor Jerry Brown came to Google to sign a new law about self driving cars. Hopefully more states will follow soon. It’s great to see politicians standing up for legislative reforms that allow greater innovation -- especially Alex Padilla, the author of this bill.
Sergey and I founded Google because we’re super optimisitc about the potential for technology to make the world a better place. Think about how many people are underserved by transportation today, like those with disabilities, and how self driving cars will transform their lives. Or the wasted time you sit in your car every day commuting to and from work. Or the deaths and injuries that could be avoided. It’s great to think that when young kids start driving the cars they're in will be guiding them safely on their journey.

Celebrated fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg tried on Glass for the first time a few months ago at a conference that she attended with Sergey Brin. She immediately loved it and they agreed to bring Glass to New York Fashion Week. Diane is a champion for innovation and effortless design, so it’s unsurprising that Glass fit seamlessly into her production. In the week leading up to her Spring 2013 show in New York, and during the show itself, everyone from stylists and models to Diane herself used Glass to capture never-before-seen footage of the creative process. This is the first time any video has been shot entirely through Glass and we’re so excited to be able to share it with you. #DVFthroughGlass

Always good to see your shadow, especially when it is on MARS! Congrats NASA. Just watched part of the press conference and the excitement is contagious. I can't imagine the feeling of relief after years and years of hard work and a lot of inherent risk. I hope we see a lot more missions like this. It would be amazing to see the other planets and moons up close and we would learn a lot, I'm sure.

We are always pushing the limits of our technology, and Project Glass is no exception. It is designed to help you live in the moment -- even when you’re falling from the sky.
We’re still in early development days, but at Google I/O this morning we wanted to do a product demo in a way we’d never tried before. We worked with some of the world’s top athletes, combined skydiving and mountain biking, and shared the experience -- through their eyes -- with the world.
If you missed it, we’d love you to be able to see how we put this together, so tune in live tomorrow (weather permitting!) at roughly 11am at https://developers.google.com/events/io/ to check it out.
And you may just catch another Hangout in Air.

Today we're marking the birth of a someone who is a hero to many of us at Google. Alan Turing was born 100 years ago into a world very different from our own—but he’s a founding father of every computer and Internet company today. In 1936, his paper “On Computable Numbers” introduced two key concepts, “algorithms” and “computing machines," which now rank among the most important intellectual breakthroughs of the 20th century.
In the evolution of computing, all paths trace back to Turing—so we're proud to help commemorate and preserve his legacy. In 2010 we helped raise funds to preserve Turing's papers at Bletchley Park, and recently we’ve worked with curators at London’s Science Museum on their new exhibition “Codebreaker - Alan Turing’s Life and Legacy.” And of course, we couldn't let this occasion pass without a doodle. There’s been a lot of buzz...so I’m excited to officially introduce Google Drive. We have really focused here on letting users create & share with others and this is a natural evolution of Google Docs. It’s not just storage, it’s about helping you live and work in the cloud and making sure your data is seamlessly available everywhere. You can use it across platforms -- Mac, PC, Android, iOS (coming soon) -- and you can use it with many third party applications - we’re working with many developers to expand the Drive ecosystem.
So, between the Loch Ness Monster and Google Drive, looks like you’ll have to keep looking for Nessie.

FOUNDERS’ LETTER 2012
Introduction
Throughout our evolution, from privately held start-up to large, publicly listed company, we have managed Google for the long term — enjoying tremendous success as a result, especially since our IPO in 2004. Sergey and I hoped, though we did not expect, that Google would have such significant impact, and this progress has made us even more impatient to do important things that matter in the world. Our enduring love for Google comes from a strong desire to create technology products that enrich millions of people’s lives in deep and meaningful ways. To fulfill these dreams, we need to ensure that Google remains a successful, growing business that can generate significant returns for everyone involved.

Top of my priority list has been creating a simpler, more intuitive experience across all our products so users get exactly what they need, right when they want it. While we will always have improvements to make, I am excited about our progress and the opportunities in front of Google today. You can read my CEO update below.

We think technology should work for you—to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t.
A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment. We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do.
Please follow along as we share some of our ideas and stories. We’d love to hear yours, too. What would you like to see from Project Glass?

We announced our self-driving car project in 2010 (http://goo.gl/dI6qA) with a clear goal: make driving safer, more enjoyable and more efficient.
There’s much left to design and test, but we’ve now safely completed more than 200,000 miles of computer-led driving, gathering great experiences and an overwhelming number of enthusiastic supporters.
We wanted to share one of our favorite moments from some special research we conducted. Watch this video of Steve, who joined us for a drive on a carefully programmed route to experience being behind the wheel in a whole new way. We organized this test as a technical experiment outside of our core research efforts, but we think it’s also a promising look at what this kind of technology may one day deliver for society if rigorous technical and safety standards can be met.

Taylor Wilson
At 10, he built his first bomb.
At 11, he started mining for uranium and buying vials of plutonium on the Internet.
At 14, he made a nuclear reactor.
Wilson got his start on Fusor.net, a website where nuclear hobbyists who call themselves “fusioneers” fill message boards on topics that would enthrall only the geekiest subset of society, like “So where can I get a deal on deuterium gas?” The goal of every fusioneer is to build a reactor that can fuse atoms together, a feat first achieved by scientists in 1934.
“I’m obsessed with radioactivity. I don’t know why,” says Wilson in his laid-back drawl. “Possibly because there’s power in atoms that you can’t see, an unlocked power.”
Taylor Wilson (born 1994) is an American nuclear scientist who was noted in 2008 for being the youngest person in the world (at age 14) to build a working ... more »

I've been following what's going on in Homs with horror--it's a tragedy unfolding before our eyes. My heart goes out to all the victims and I just hope the international community can at least get medical supplies to all those who are suffering.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/syria/9101211/Syria-Edith-Bouvier-and-Paul-Conroys-YouTube-pleas-for-help-from-Homs-after-Marie-Colvin-attack.html
From YouTube:
Two journalists who were wounded in the same blast that killed Sunday Times war correspondent Marie Colvin have made a haunting YouTube appeal for help from Homs.
